The Life & Philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev ji

Our weekly meeting on November 03, 2017 was presided

by Vice President Rtn. Salil Bali as our President Dr. Rita

Kalra was out of station. Secretary Rtn. Jeeten Bhambri was

not well so Joint Secretary Rtn. Prof. Rana Nayar officiated

in his place. VP Salil Bali wished all present, “Sat Siri Akal.

Jee Ayan Nu. Gurpurab diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan.”

Dr. S.S.Bhatti

Salil welcomed the chief guest Dr.

S.S. Bhatti, Founder-Teacher and

Former Principal, Chandigarh

College of Architecture, who was

formally introduced by Rtn. Prof.

Rana Nayar.

Fellow of the Indian Institute of

Architects, Dr. S.S. Bhatti, who

holds three PhDs, is a founder-

teacher of Chandigarh College of

Architecture (CCA) from which he

retired as Principal in 1996. He is

one of India‟s most versatile professionals. The American

Biographical Institute has conferred one of its Twentieth

Century Achievement Awards on him and described him

“as most admirable and whose career achievements and

social contributions have been selected for permanent

documentation in Five Hundred Leaders of Influence

designed for biographical reference and inspiration for

present-day citizens of the Twentieth Century as well as

future generations.” His most outstanding contribution is in

elevating to an international standing Chandigarh College

of Architecture which was established by the Government

of Punjab on 07 August 1961 as the Academic Wing of the

Great Chandigarh Experiment at the behest of Le

Corbusier, the Master Architect of Chandigarh. Even as a

student (1955-1960) at Sir JJ College of Architecture,

Bombay (now Mumbai), Dr. Bhatti showed exceptional

knack for teaching, and thus made up his mind then to be a

career teacher. He has authored books on art, architecture,

theology, poetry, criticism, etc. He is member of many

professional bodies. From fathoming architecture of

buildings to mastering architectonics of poetry, Dr. Bhatti

is a man of many mediums and many disciplines. A painter

and a poet, his latest book illustrates his paintings as well

is a compilation of poems.

In his presentation Dr. Bhatti had described the philosophy

of Guru Nanak Dev ji as Guru Nanak‟s Revelation In

Architectural Perspective, and based on his book "Guru

Nanak Bani: Revelation, Mysticism, Creativity". Dr.

Bhatti‟s talk bears a decidedly unique Sikh mystical tone

and content that reflects not only his great learning, but

also his personal experience of Sikh life of action and its

mystical longings and strivings. Giving cogent reasons for

his preference, Dr. Bhatti explained his concept of

"Creative Mysticism" in preference to the traditional

notions of religion. He fully utilizes his expertise as an

Architect to forcefully deplore the neglect of

mystical/spiritual theology.

Guru Nanak's Revelation, being a verbal direct Revelation,

implies that the Guru is not using any of his own faculties

in conjuring up the make-believe world of Mythology or

indulging in ratiocinative cerebration of Science or

imagining romanticism as one comes across.

In his concept of Creative Mysticism, Dr. Bhatti treats

Mysticism as Experience, and Creativity as its Expression.

According to him, Mysticism, at its profoundest, is creative,

and Creativity, at its highest, is mystical. Dr. Bhatti's

perspective is delineated in very precise and crisp terms:

"Guru Nanak's Creative Mysticism lays foundation for a

non-denominational, non-communal, non-sectarian, non-

ethnic system of Holistic Humanism whereby anyone and

everyone is urged to an optimistic View and a fulfilling

Way of Life", emphasizing the essential requirements of

being a true Sikh in accordance with the Guru's teachings.

Dr. Bhatti explained the unique significance of Guru Nanak

Bani in the context of world religions. He revealed Japuji to

be the „Architecture of the Soul‟. Man, as microcosm, has

been architectured in the same way as the macrocosm—

with the three basic elements of Space, Structure, and

Form. Space is his Soul, Structure is his Mind, and Form is

his Body. By analogy, Japu (or Simran) is an exercise

aimed at integration of the Temporal Architecture of

Microcosm (soul, mind, body) vis-à-vis that of the

Macrocosm (space, structure, form).

Coming as it does from an architect, Dr. Bhatti‟s talk on Guru Nanak is certainly very inspiring. Guru Nanak's Revelation is

mystically-creative and creatively-mystical insofar as it exhorts man as a privileged human person to take initiative and

aspire for an inner life through God-orientation (gurmukh) by transcending Mind-orientation (manmukh). The term

„orientation‟ used by Dr. Bhatti is typically architectural.

Shutterscapes - World, Travel, Camera, Me By: Rtn. Dr. Sanjay Kalra

The world is a book and those who do not travel, read only one page.

- Saint Augustine

I have always longed for something beyond the monotonous, beyond the mundane! My journey through the lens started with

“Expressions beyond Impressions” which quenched my artistic thirst. Next came “lens and patterns-poetic expressions”

which contained some peculiar clicks from nature which motivated me to pen down some poetic descriptions. “Shutterscapes

- World, Travel, Camera, Me” is a travelogue which has documented with vividity; the architecture, nature, imprints of

history and life, that I captured on my camera during my extensive travels.

I travel a lot and take pictures as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone. I believe in living life to the fullest: photography

has been my way of bearing witness to the joy I find in these extraordinary travels. Each photograph has been described such

that it has little to do with what you see and everything to do with the way you see them thus delving deep into the philosophy

of life. I hope you enjoy flipping through the shutterscapes around the world and get engrossed in the story each picture tells.

Dr. Bhatti also talked about his home having the right ambience in which such a divine

influence would directly and immediately be exerted upon his mind. His grandfather read

Sukhmani Sahib all his life, and his self-taught versatile father Sardar Balwant Singh, with

unshakable faith in Guru Nanak Dev‟s Shabad, designed two of Sikh Faith‟s historic

monuments: Gurdwara Panja Sahib, Hassan Abdal, and Takhat Sri Keshgarh, Anandpur

Sahib. Above all, he successfully put his son Dr. Bhatti on the God-lit Path of Gurbani on

which his mortal journey has gained stronger and stronger foothold every passing day.
