There are a number of sermon topics that, in days gone by, were broached regularly from the pulpit. Some of those subjects, for a variety of reasons, don‟t make it to the sermon stage very often, any more. One of those subjects is that of “gossip.” I suppose I don‟t think much about gossip because I assume most of us are “grown-up” enough to have learned not to talk about folks behind their back. Alas, not so! I‟m usually aware when I am the subject of someone‟s gossip (surprisingly, that kind of thing reaches me rather quickly). I have become accustomed to ignoring it because I think the more attention you pay to that kind of “hogwash” the worse it gets. I have to admit that when I hear some things, I am truly hurt. I think to myself, “That person ought to know me better than to think that I would…” Such is not the case. Probably the worst thing about gos-sip is that the person who is the subject has no recourse. You don‟t have the opportunity to refute, deny, explain, clarify, or even plead guilty. The story has gone around through so many people you could never catch up to it. Not only is gossip hurtful; it‟s just not fair. I think that‟s why Jesus only spoke about other people if they were present. He didn‟t com-plain about the Pharisees behind their back. He spoke to them face to face. When he con-demned an activity he did so to the people who were doing it. In Matthew 18 verses 15 and following, Jesus laid out a process for dealing with someone who has wronged you:
“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that „every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax col-lector.”
There is nothing in here about spreading your complaint around before you talk to the one you think has wronged you. There is nothing in there about sharing with folks things that are none of your business. In fact, this entire passage is about restoring relationships through the grace of forgiveness. You can‟t do that with gossip. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount that if one calls his/her brother a fool, it is tantamount to murder. I think gossip is even worse. There have been times when someone has come straight to me and asked if something they heard was true. I appreciate that so much. Most of the time what they have heard is a tidbit of truth polluted with a goodly portion of untruth. Gossip is simply unfixable once it‟s out. It is an assault on the character of another person who has no way to defend them-selves. If you want a good definition of gossip: If the words coming out of your mouth (or fingers for Facebook-ers or Tweeters) aren‟t building someone up or sharing a legitimate prayer con-cern, IT IS GOSSIP. That also means if you are engaged in criticizing anyone behind their back (legitimate or not) that‟s gossip, too. I don‟t expect everyone who engages in gossip is going to stop because you‟ve read some article in a church newsletter. My hope is that at least once in a while you‟ll walk away from someone who is about to share something they shouldn‟t, with you; you at least may stop and consider if what you are about to say will bring Glory to God or build up a brother or sister; you might even venture to think about whether it would be okay to say it to God. We all fight the temptation of some kind of sin; may God lend His strength to helping us limit our words to those truly worth sharing with everyone. Can‟t wait to see you Sunday!
