WHEN A TRAGEDY strikes any college athletic program, ithas an impact on the sports teams at all schools.

There is somewhat of a bond between all college athletes, regardless of the location or classification of the institution.

This was displayed last weekend with the tragic mini-busaccident that claimed the lives of four North Central Texas Collegesoftball players.

The team had been to Oklahoma City to meet SouthernNazarene in a fall scrimmage.

The bus was hit broadside by a truck. The Javelina athletic department not only has an association

with NCTC as a collegiate sports program but also as a schoolwhere the Javelinas have recruited athletes.

There are currently four players on the Javelina baseball teamwho played at the Gainesville school.

Pitcher Ryan Scott and outfielder Dustin Luna were on theroster last season and pitchers Dean Fleitman and Miguel Pontiffsare newcomers this year.

The TAMUK athletic staff and athletes join others fromthroughout the country in extending deepest sympathy to thefamilies of the young women who were killed in the accident andthe other athletes and coaches at the North Texas college.

The panel also approved expanding the experimental videoreplay rule to include “catch” and “no catch” plays.

Conferences will be able to request through the rules committeeto use the experimental video replay rule in regular season as well asconference tournament games.

The panel approved a new rule regarding batters hit bypitchers.

Starting next spring, a batter must make an attempt to avoidbeing hit by the ball. If the umpire rules the batter did not make anattempt to get out of the way, or that he leaned into the patch of theball, a pitch inside the strike zone that touches the batter will becalled a strike.

If the pitch is outside the strike zone, it will be a ball but ineither case, the batter will not be awarded first base.
