This month…some wandering musings….

Membership ThingsSo far, close to 30 members have changed their newsletter preference; opting for the online version. With the electronic version in mind, we are planning to add some functionality to the newsletter with links to emails, advertisers and sponsors, as well as interest-ing sites. I hope more folks will take advantage of this – the e-version will have some solid advantages.

Speaking of the newsletter…we are always looking for interesting content. Feel free to drop me or Mike O’Rear, the Bahnstormer Editor, an email with your thoughts. You’ll find my email address later in this article and Mike’s is [email protected].

Our club has an interesting geographical distribution of members; something on the order of seven coun-ties in Michigan. Currently, some Board Members drive serious miles to attend the meetings located in southwestern Ann Arbor. To ease that pain we have decided to alternate locations. Odd numbered months, the Board meeting will be held at the Carlyle Grill. Even numbered months, the meeting will be held at Karl’s Cabin in Plymouth. The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2nd. To better accommodate those attending the meeting as well as the hosting restaurant an RSVP would be helpful. Send your note to club Secretary, Mary Ann Kantrow at [email protected].

EventsI’ve lived in the Detroit area all of my life, frequently hearing about the character of a Detroit area land-mark, the Cadieux Cafe. Interestingly and despite all of my meanderings throughout metropolitan Detroit; I’ve never been there…. Mike and Kathy O’Rear have taken the initiative to host an afternoon outing at the Cadieux Cafe reserving two hours of feather bowling. Check out the Cadieux Cafe website – you’ll find a video about feather bowling as well. The date is Sun-day, February 7th. Yes, it’s Superbowl Sunday. My thought is I can check out the game at the Café with friends from the club; if I miss any of the commercials, I can watch them the next day on the internet…. The group size is limited; if you’re interested, please RSVP to Mike as soon as possible. (See Ad on Page 7)

Drivers’ education dates: our annual Grattan weekend is scheduled for June 11 –13, 2010. We should have dates for Waterford Hills posted in the next newsletter.

This year the Porsche Parade will be held in St. Charles, Illinois; July 3 – 9; west of Chicago. I under-stand it is a really great experience and plan to attend. I’m sure many folks from each of the four PCA regions in Michigan plan to attend. The Board is exploring caravans to the event as well as group lodging. I invite you to check out the PCA , national website as well as this link http://parade2010.pca.org/default.htm for an overview. I’ll keep in touch through the newslet-ter or blanket emails as I learn more.

Help WantedAfter a stellar performance our webmistress, Valerie Roedenbeck is retiring her position. From what I’ve been told it’s not as complicated as most would think and the position comes with a willing to learn assis-tant – Lynda Mammel! Val reconstructed the website when she accepted the position – now, most of the work is uploading and modifying content. This is a vital component of our club. Please consider con-tributing; perhaps teaching Lynda the subtleties and

remaining available for questions….

Last month I wrote we had some new volunteers for the events committee. But, please, don’t consider this group the final say in what the club may undertake. If you have any ideas as to something that might be a good fit for the club, drop us an email – even if you don’t want to get involved with the event the idea may be novel and something worthy of investigation. Readers SurveyEvery so often this topic surfaces and it makes for some good fun – especially in the dead of winter – what is your favorite driving song. Not a song about a car…but, rather, a song that makes you feel alive, full of energy and begs you to bang some gears. For me, I’m thinking We’re not going to take! by The Who. I know the ladies enjoy the same experience. When Liz got her TT convertible the only modification was “the mother of all car stereo systems.” It’s not atypical to hear her coming home a quarter mile away with a trail-ing cloud of dust…. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I’ll tabulate the results; printing them in the next newsletter. Let me know if you want me to publish your name too….

Have you noticed Boxster owners just don’t waive to you…sorry, but I’ve reached this conclusion after years of empirical study. I once thought it was because I was waiving from my 914 – the inference that many Boxster owners are younger, most likely non-Porschephiles and/or Yuppies in training who simply don’t know, don’t care or both what just passed them…. Yes, this applies to “S” owners too. Certainly, it would have nothing to do with the fact I was driving a 914….

Late November, I noticed an absolutely gorgeous, sil-ver 997-based turbo heading toward me – north from the Sashabaw and I-75 intersection. I was driving a virtually identical 996-based car, in metallic green. I’m a friendly sort; so, of course, I waived. Yup, nothing back – so after shouting “Clarkston snob, gray-haired, pony-tailed, hippie bastard” through the sunroof, I real-ized it was club member Wayne Ellis! This matter was far from over….

I telephoned Wayne, who very eloquently explained the rules of the road to me… The highlights of the conversation are summarized as:

o Only wave and/or acknowledge cars within class or one class below – but with due sympathy to those lower down the scale

o When crossing the path of a car in a class above your own, wait till the other driver initiates the wave

o Never initiate a wave to a car in a class above your own, unless you know the driver

o Never wave to a car two or more classes below your own

o No matter what, wave should only consist of raising the palm from around the steering wheel. Anything more is ostentatious or over-enthusiastic

o Never allow a passenger to wave. They are not in the club or likely your girlfriend and have no right

o When alongside another Porsche at traffic light, always look directly ahead, avoid eye contact and never, ever engage in eye contact. This especially true with models of a lower class

o Never admire another Porsche when driving. If on foot, and come across another Porsche, brief glances over your shoulder are permitted.

As a general rule, excluding the Carrera GT and GT3RS series of cars, the caste system is as fol-lows….

A: 997; turbo, GT3 -- the turbo having precedent B: 996; turbo, GT3 -- the turbo having precedentC: 993; turbo GT3 -- the turbo having precedentD: Boxster; all models -- the “S” gives you more stand-

ingE: 911; all models, the “S” gives you more standingF: 914; all models, the 914-6 gives you significantly

increased standing as a highly discriminating Porsche owner and moves you above the 911.

G: 928; all models; manual transmission increases your standing

H: 968; all modelsI: 944; all models – the turbo having precedentJ: 924; all models – the turbo having precedent

Email me your thoughts.

The Grand Sport of Engine Tear-DownBy Bahn Stormer Editor Mike O’Rear

Those members who have an up-to-date email address on file with Porsche Club of America received an invitation to watch a 911 engine tear-down. Premier Porsche technician David Laing invited all to spend a day, at Grand Sport in Southfield, as he disassembled a 911 SC motor. In doing so David took the time to explain many do and don’ts of the process. He also provided many insights into some of a 911 motors minor foibles and proper maintenance of the engine.

Attendees ranged from those who were considering rebuilding their own motors to many of us who just wanted to better un-derstand what’s inside that flat-six engine. Speaking personally, it was fun to sit on a stool, or in a chair, and watch someone who knows what they are doing dive into the internals of my favorite engine.

On January 16th David scheduled another session (following this issue going to press) during which he began reassembly of the motor. He expects this process to take a few days. Future sessions are yet to be scheduled.

For those of you who would like to attend make sure your up-to-date email address is on file with PCA and watch for future invitations.

Update Your E-mail AddressIncreasingly the Rally Sport Region uses e-mail to remind members of upcoming events and, on occasion, announce last minute changes or additions to the social calendar. We need your accurate address.

To add or update you e-mail address go to pca.org and click on “Members” then click on “Member Record” and follow the simple instructions.

The annual Porsche Parade is coming up and we are beginning to plan for it. Those who are interested in at-tending should review the Parade website and decide the days and events in which they’d like to take part. Most members will choose several dates and events, rather than attend the entire Parade event.

Based upon member interest we can try to arrange for the club to have designated tables at banquets. Watch the Bahn Stormer for updates or contact Nancy Schulz ([email protected]) or Dianne Kimber ([email protected]) if you have a group travelling to St. Charles. There may be other members that would like to caravan.

Location: St. Charles, Illinois (a Chicago suburb)

Dates: July 1 – July 9

Registration: Opens Tuesday, March 9 online (www.parade2010.pca.org)

Cost: $149 for an entrant and co-entrant (must be PCA members); each additional family member is $29. Vari-ous fees for banquets, autocross, TSD rally, etc. Check website for details.

Sponsor Hotel: Pheasant Run Resort, rooms begin at $122/night for registrants only. Hilton Garden Inn offer-ing rooms as well. Both are located in St. Charles.

$$$$ I would like to share with you the difference between ATE Super Blue Racing (ATE Blue) and ATE TYP 200 (ATE Clear) and why I prefer ATE Clear.

They both have the same Wet Boiling Point (200°C) and Dry Boiling Point (280°C), which is the important part. The ATE Blue is not DOT approved because it is blue. It also seems to have a long-term affect on the plastic reservoirs, staining them blue from the inside. This makes it become difficult to see the fluid level when it should be easy.

It appears to me that the reason why they make the fluid blue was to separate the clear from the blue during brake fluid changes. If you run enough fluid through the system and do it often, the ATE Clear is what I would recommend.

Try to avoid keeping open cans of brake fluid on the shelf because it has a tendency to collect moisture, which will lower the boiling point of the fluid under extreme conditions. Until next issue- Jeff

The Rally Sport Region invites you to the

May Day Lunch and Tour of The Gilmore

Museum

When? May 1, 2010 – Begins with lunch at 11:30 am in the Blue Moon Diner.

Where? The Gilmore Car Museum is located midway between Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids,

Lansing and Battle Creek, Michigan. Just twenty minutes from either I-94 or US-131.

The address is 6865 Hickory Road, Hickory Corners, MI 49060. Plan on a 2 – 21/2

hour drive.

Cost? $15.50 p/p and must be paid by April 15, 2010. This fee includes lunch at the

Blue Moon Authentic 1941 diner and admission to the Museum.

Is this a “run”? No, feel free to caravan with other members and explore your very

own route to the Museum.

Will my Porsche be safe? We have secured parking for the club, separate from public

parking.

How do I sign up? Tickets must be purchased by April 15 (TAX DAY) through Dianne

Kimber. Contact her at 248 538-7711 or via email at [email protected].

What makes this place so special? The Gilmore Car Museum began in 1963 as the hobby

of Donald S. Gilmore when his wife, Genevieve, gave him an antique car for his birthday

—a 1920 Pierce-Arrow “project car.” With the help of some friends, the auto was placed

under a tent and a full restoration followed. The hobby soon grew into a collection of

over 30 automobiles. Mr. Gilmore purchased 90 acres of farm property and had several

historic barns dismantled piece by piece and moved to the site.

Today, the site includes eight historic barns, a re-created 1930s service station, a small

town train station, and nearly three miles of paved roads. You will find yourself reliving

memories and viewing the nearly 75 vintage pedal cars on exhibit. One of North America

’s largest displays of automotive hood ornaments and name badges can also be found in

the combined collections of The Gilmore and CCCA museums.

For those of you unfamiliar with this type of event, a TSD ral-ly is a Time-Speed-Distance contest where two participants — a pilot and co-pilot — draw a pre-determined start time. Using this time, cars report to a check-in location where they are given a packet containing ultra-secret route instructions. Cars then drive to the secret start location, where they wait 30 minutes after their start-time to begin the actual event. Participants must follow the route and prescribed speed limits closely. The event includes several checkpoints which cars must clear, having completed the segments as closely to the “perfect” time as possible, with penalties doled out for going too slow/fast.

Before the event, partici-pants had the opportunity to attend a “Rally School” to familiarize themselves with the event rules and lan-guage of the route instruc-tions. It’s a good thing, too, because the instructions generally read like this:Right at STOP — CAST 18 – SL40 CAST 39 – Left after “Red Cliff,” CAST 14 – etc.

We reported at check-in, a parking structure in Lionshead, and were glad to meet Lee Sammons, who is a “rallymaster” and was in charge of developing the route. Using our favorite line, “we’re journalists with PorschePurist.com,” we secured a few route details from Lee, who pointed out scenic areas and places where we might get lost. Good thing, too, because even after the rally school we were not exactly sure we would know how to follow the route directions.

We hopped back in the GT3 (disguised as a Ford Focus), reset the odometer, and were off on the route. Aside from the gorgeous Colorado scenery, following a variety of Porsches was a definite highlight for us. Perhaps tipped off by the camera dangerously held out the passenger’s window as our fearless Motorsport Editor drove as if on a race track, drivers soon realized that we were there to photograph their cars. They played to the camera: some smiled, some waved, we got thumbs-up signs, and even a peek at a Ferdy Bear who was riding with a couple in a Guards Red C4S.

Aside from those who were there to enjoy, there were a few participants who were clearly taking the TSD Rally very seriously. Cathy and Mike Martin, driving a yellow ‘03 996

with black racing stripes, told us they had participated in the Targa Newfoundland Rally and that we could interview them later because they “were here to win on Mobil 1”! While most drivers and copilots smiled whilst driving, there were a few whose focus was palpable. I met a woman at the Mt Massive Golf Course (site of our second checkpoint) who exhaled, wiped sweat off her brow, and said, “this is stressful!”

At every checkpoint, friendly PCA volunteers worked seamlessly to enhance the participants’ experience. The first volunteer would call out the arriving car’s number, and the car would be registered. The remaining volunteers would hand the car a slip and send it on its way to the next segment. At the first checkpoint, volunteer Sean Cridland approached us and said, “are you from Porsche Purist? I want a case of Mobil Oil!” We were happy to take his contact information and continue on our way (congratulations Sean for finding Valerie and Christian and winning a case of Mobil1).

More scenic roads lead us to Leadville, CO, which reportedly has one of the coldest, snowiest winters in the country, often 9 months of snow! That was not the case today, where sun-shine and perfect temps in the 70s greeted us. After taking a brief break there and enjoying several cars which we’d been following waving as they came by, we resumed our adventure through the mountains.

The Mobil 1 Rally finished at the epicenter of the Porsche Parade, the Keystone Confer-ence Center. As cars came by, smiles were the norm, and Porsche owners fresh off their 3 ½ hour adven-tures through the Colorado roads crowded the parking lot. As we were ready to call it a day, Tim Drummer approached us and asked for a case of Mobil 1 oil for his Cayman S, becoming our second and final winner. The perfect end to an adventurous day!

Even though we didn’t have our Porsches with us, we truly enjoyed being a part of this event, a visual feast of nature and cars shared with friendly people. We’re already looking forward to next year!
