President’s Note

Vice President’s Comments

I hope these comments find everyone in good health and cheer. We here at the Clan Douglas Society

have been preparing for the games season and we hope as many of our members as possible will

attend the various Scottish Games held in your communities. Please help support our Regents who

put in a lot of time and effort into planning these games.

Plans have been progressing nicely for the 2013 Annual General Meeting which will be held this year

at the Longs Peak Scottish Games held in Estes Park, CO. There will be more to come in the newsletter

and the information for the AGM is now posted on the Clan Douglas website. Let’s make this the best

AGM ever and have as many of you as possible attend this year’s meeting.

Also, we are still in need of Regents in states where there are vacancies, If any of our members would

be interested in becoming a Regent, please contact me so we can discuss this matter. In closing, I

would like to thank all of our members for their continued support and special thanks to all our

hardworking Regents and Assistant Vice Presidents who do so much for our society.

Best Regards,

Mark A. Peterson, Vice President

Clan Douglas Society of North America

Hello to all of you wonderful Clan Douglas members. Spring will soon be here and we will begin the

2013 Festivals and Games. This issue should have your 2013 Festival and Games List, to inform you

of the dates and places at which you can expect to find a Douglas Tent set up and hosted by a Clan

Douglas Regent. When you find a listing of an event near you, make your plans to attend. You will

certainly enjoy this celebration of your/our rich and wonderful heritage in the company of your

fellow clan members. If at all possible, contact the Clan Douglas Regent for your area, let them know

of your intentions to attend and if at all possible, offer to assist them. I am sure your offer will be

greatly appreciated. Hosting and setting up (not to mention tearing down and packing up ) is a very

difficult endeavor.

This year's festivals should be especially exciting, as 27 new names have been added to the list of

allied families within the Douglas Clan. (This gives us the opportunity for great growth in our

gathering in of the scattered progeny of our people.)

I hope to see many of you at events across the US and Canada, especially at our Annual General

Meeting and Gathering Banquet in Colorado in September.

Once again, thank you for the privilege and honor of serving as your president.

A Letter From Scotland Dear Friends,

In my previous letter, I mentioned that the 2014 Clan Gathering and Games to be held at Stirling were in doubt and at present the situation is no clearer. It would appear that there will only be a small event at Stirling Castle and a re-enactment of the 2014 Battle of Bannockburn although a definite decision has not yet been made which is making life difficult for those who wish to come but are wary of making final arrangements. It would be good to have a re-run of the 2009 events taking place albeit, with some improvements especially on the financial side, taking place but this seems to be very doubtful. We just have to await further information and developments.

Some time ago, I did a fairly uncomplimentary report on the exploits of Archibald, 15t and only Duke of Douglas regarding his enraged attacks against the farming community of Covington near Biggar when he set out to shoot them and destroy their farms. I thought afterwards I had perhaps been a bit unfair towards him but could not condone his evil ways. However, I came across reports from two historians regarding the Duke which I feel completely vindicates me of my dislike of him.

The first report relates to a very close friend of the Duke, Captain John Ker, who was living as a guest at Douglas Castle in 1725. Captain Ker died in mysterious circumstances and Sir William Fraser merely stated that while he died by the hand of the Duke, it may have been a fencing accident.

However, the historian, Wodrow, had much more to add and states that Captain Ker, who was concerned about the relationship between the Duke and a gentleman called White, endeavoured to convince the Duke to break off his connection with White. Wodrow states that "the poor Duke had been crazed in his brain for many years" and when White heard what Ker had been saying, White persuaded the Duke that this was insulting and convinced the feeble minded Duke to enter the bedroom of the sleeping Ker where he shot him and stabbed him twice.

Another version of the death of Captain Ker is given by C.K.Sharpe who states that : "Archibald, first and last Duke of Douglas, was a person of the most wretched intellect, proud, ignorant, silly, spiteful and unforgiving." The Duke's sister, Lady Jane Douglas, had a flirtation with Captain Ker of which the Duke did not approve. The night before Captain Ker was due to leave Douglas Castle, the Duke observed him entering the bedroom of Lady Jane to bid her farewell. As soon as Ker returned to his own bedroom, the Duke, in a diabolical rage, entered the room and shot Captain Ker, leaving him with a deep and mortal wound.

The Duke immediately disappeared to Holland for a considerable time and returned when things had quietened down and no action was taken against him. In the vault in the Ancient Church of St Bride, there is a lead coffin, the only one without an inscription, and it is said to contain the remains of Captain John Ker.

In August this year, we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Douglas Heritage Museum in St. Sophia's Chapel. The very first connection I had with Clan Douglas was a letter, still in my possession, dated 24th November 1992 which was written by the Late Dr Gilbert Douglas, founding member of Clan Douglas. This arrived to me via the National Trust for Scotland. In the letter, Dr. Gilbert stated that he had visited Douglas in 1992 and had been told that the St. Sophia's Chapel had been turned over to the National Trust and perhaps it could be developed into some type of Museum building. I immediately replied to him saying that I was the Administrator for the Douglas and Angus Estate and in the process of acquiring it from the Estate. After a great deal of paperwork, etc. with Constitution, Trust Deeds etc., the Museum became a reality and with very little knowledge and experience we eventually opened in September the following year. We have had many happy times with Clan Douglas members visiting the Museum and Flower Show in September each year and throughout the

20 years and hope that this relationship will continue for many more years to come. I am preparing I little project for the Museum this year on the 500th Anniversary of the Battle of Flodden which took place on 9th September 1513 between the Scottish Army of King James IV and the English Army of King Henry VIII when the Scots suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of

the English.

This took place just over the Scottish Border near Braxton Village in England, the result of which led to some implications for our own village of Douglas and the Douglas Family. Perhaps most of us would prefer to forget about this since the Scottish army was totally destroyed but we should remember all those who met their deaths at Flodden.

Despite Wallace and Bruce of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn fame, Scotland never experienced a peaceful independence from England with so many battles following on and the Scots suffering continual losses at Falkirk, Duplin Moor, Halidon Hill etc., although they did enjoy some successes.

Very best wishes, Yours Aye, Jim

The Battle of Flodden King James Fourth, Scotland

V King Edward Eighth, England The Douglas Connections

The Battle of Flodden took place in1513 between the Scottish Army of King James IV and the English Army of King HenryVIII when the Scots suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the English.

This took place just over the Scottish border near Braxton Village in England, the result of which lead to some implications for our own village of Douglas and the Douglas Family.

Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus (called "Bell the Cat")

Prior to Flodden, Archibald 5th Earl of Angus owned vast estates in Abernethy, Selkirk and Tantallon, also the castles of Douglas, Tantallon and Hermitage.

Archibald, together with other Scottish Nobles had a disagreement with King James III since they were angry that the King's courtiers were writers, artists, sculptors, etc. and that he took no heed of any advice from the Nobles. At a meeting of the Nobles, one of them mentioned the story of the mice hanging a bell around the cat's neck. Archibald stated that he would bell the cat which resulted in him becoming known as "Bell the Cat."

He then led his noblemen friends into the King's chamber and took all the King's favourites prisoner except for one and later hanged them over Lauder Bridge.

King James III continued in his old ways and led his army to defeat against insurgents at Sauchie Bum and was later assassinated.

The Earl of Angus, together with other knights, declared the son of King James III as King James IV of Scotland.

Despite further disagreements with the King regarding lands, etc., Archibald and his noblemen friends joined-the King's army to do battle with the English at Flodden. The King refused to accept the advice of the Earl and

other knights to make an immediate attack before the English army was properly organised. This 'delay resulted in the English army recovering to totally destroy the army of the Scots. Archibald did not take part in the battle and left the battlefield angry and disgusted and returned home. Both his sons, most of his noblemen friends, and King James IV were killed' in battle.

The broken hearted 5th of Angus died between November 1513 and 1514 at St. Ninian's Monastery, Whithom, Galloway where he was buried. His heart was interred at the Ancient Church of St. Bride, Douglas where it still remains on display in a sealed casket.

His Coat of Arms is displayed in a stained glass window in the Douglas Heritage Museum in Douglas and also in the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle

The widow of King James IV was Queen Margaret Tudor of Scotland who was a sister of King Henry VIII.

Sequence of Events

1503 King James IV married Margaret Tudor.

1514 Queen Margaret married Archibald, 6th Earl of Angus and resided at Douglas Castle

The marriage proved difficult, but they had a daughter, Lady Margaret Douglas, who married the Earl of Lennox and had a son, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. Lord Darnley married Mary Queen of Scots and they had a son who became King James VI.

1515 Their daughter, Lady Margaret Douglas, was born.

1544 Lady Margaret married Matthew, 12th Earl of Lennox. Their son Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley was born.

1565 Lord Darnley married Mary Queen of It is believed that Mary presented a clock to Douglas Village which is thought to be the oldest working clock in Scotland and is in the care of Historic Scotland at St Bride's Church, Douglas.

1567 Their Son, James, was born and became King James 6th of Scotland, 1st of England.

1603 Union of the crowns.

Sandilands / Sandlin A separate clan recognized by The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs and a sept of Clan Douglas. Sandilands and Sandlin were accepted as septs of Douglas by CDSNA at its organization in 1975 based on the original list from the book Scots Kith and Kin.

The current recognized tartan of Clan Sandilands is the Douglas tartan. All searches for the surname Sandlin point to its be-ing a variation of Sandilands.

According to the March 2007 Newsletter from CDAA,

“The surname SANDILANDS is derived from the lands of Sandilands in the upper ward of Clydesdale and with the lands of Reidmyre were given to James of Sandilands by William, Lord Douglas, 18/Dec/1348 for services rendered. Sir James of Sandilands was first recorded obtaining a charter of lands in the county of Peebles from King David 11 in October 1345 as well as grants of the barony and castlewards of Wiston in Lanarkshire. Sir James of Sandilands was one of the attendants chosen by Lord William Douglas to accompany him to London in 1347 in the train of David II. They obtained a ‘safe conduct’ to England from King Edward III to bring necessaries to Sir William Douglas of Liddesdale who was a pris-oner in the Tower of London at that time. It seems that Sir James of Sandilands spent a great deal of his time traveling to and from London on business on behalf of William Douglas. When James Sandilands married Eleanor of Bruce, the sister of Douglas, James was granted the barony of Bengowre (Bangour) Co. Edinburgh as a marriage settlement. In 1350, this was confirmed by Duncan, Earl of Fife who had given it to Douglas formerly. In consequence of the marriage of Sandilands to Eleanor Douglas, King David rati-fied that the Douglas arms be quartered by the Lords of Calder and it has indeed been pointed out that on the failure of the older legitimate line, the Sandilands became in law heirs-general of the house of Doug-las.”See also http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/Septs/sandilands.htm where the following is given: “During the Wars of Scottish Independence Sir James de Sandilands distinguished himself in the wars against the English. For his services he was rewarded with a royal charter to his lands by King David II of Scotland. He married Eleanor, the only daughter of Sir Archibald Douglas, Regent of Scotland. James Sandilands received from his brother in law, William IV, Lord of Douglas the lands of Calder in Lothian.” Also, “The current chief of Clan Sandilands is The Rt. Hon. the Lord Torphichen.”

Fraser, in The Douglas Book (v.3, p 1109-1111), presents the text of the charters granted to James Sandilands by William, Lord Douglas.

316. Charter by William of Douglas, lord of that ilk, by which he grants to James of Sandilandis, his well beloved esquire, for homage and service, all his lands of Sandilandys and the Redmire, with the pertinents, within his lordship of Douglasdale, with the east part of the land of Pollynfeygh as the water of Douglas runs, ascending as far as the two trees of Byrkis on the west side of the Halleford opposite the Haynyngschaw, which is within the barony of Lesmahagow, and so upward extending to the Wythyn Buskis on the east side of Langtaille, and so up as far as the messuage, sometime of Adam Peterson, and so upward extending to the wood of Pollynfeyghschaw, and so ascending near the side of the wood as far as the highway, and so upward as the stream flows to the end of Thomas Rouche's croft as far as the Lonyng dyke : To be held of the granter and his heirs to the said James and his heirs, in fee and heritage ; with a provision that all grain growing upon the said lands which came to the granter's mill, should pay no more than his dominical lands were anciently wont to pay, and that if the grain of the foresaid lands were brought to sale at market or elsewhere within the barony or outside, multure should not be exacted therefor by the farmers of the mills ; the said James and his heirs to be free from all payment of contribution, though incurred generally throughout the country, unless the granter's dominical land, being in his own hands, or the hands of his successors, be specially obliged to the payment of the foresaid contributions : Rendering yearly at the feast of the Nativity in the parish church of Douglas a pair of white spurs, if asked, in name of blench farm. [Original Charter in Torphichen Charter-chest.]

During the Wars of Scottish Independence Sir James de Sandilands distinguished himself in the wars against the English. For his services he was rewarded with a royal charter to his lands by King David II of Scotland. He married Eleanor, the only daughter of Sir Archibald Douglas, Regent of Scotland. James Sandilands received from his brother in law, William IV, Lord of Douglas the lands of Calder in Lothian. James Sandiland’s son also called James was one of the hostages sent to England for King James I of Scotland. James Sandi-lands was only returned to Scotland two years before his death. He was the Sandilands presumptive heir to the Douglas es-tates and should have inherited them on the death of the James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas. However the estates went in-stead to Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas, who was Sir James Douglas’s bastard son.

James Sandilands was succeeded by his own son John. The Sandilands found themselves in opposition to their Douglas rela-tives as they were unshakeable in their support to King James II of Scotland. Chief John Sandilands and his uncle James were both assassinated by Patrick Thornton on the orders of the Douglas faction. James Sandilands inherited the estates and mar-ried Margaret Kinlock of Cruvie. One of their sons, James Sandilands of Cruvie established the line who would later become Lords of Abercrombie.

Burns Night in Duluth For over 30 years, the Kitchi Gammi Club has held a Burn's Night celebration via invitation. The Tudor structure is magnificent and a great place to honor "Rabbie Burns." We were one of only 7 Clans to host a room. Our Clan Douglas room served fresh North Sea Salmon, and smoked white fish as the primary dishes, with a broccoli bacon salad. Almost 200 people were in attendance according to the registration.

Seventy-Five people visited our Clan Douglas Room...and more than once. We had the best hospitality, some said. Haggis was served by Clan Sinclair and Clan McPherson had several whisky's to sample. (Jock did not participate in the whisky sampling.) He was served a wee dram after the Gaelic Toast and piped in the ceremonial Haggis for the Address. It is an event bar none in the U. S., I'd guess, because of this English Tudor building. The event took place on two floors. Of course, the DSHA Pipes & Drums played 4 sets. Really, it was great...and inside...no weather problems.

March 15 will be the Highland to the Island concert at College of St. Scholastica, Clan Douglas' next event. Last year we were the only Clan to be represented. We were located in the foyer leading to the auditorium.

Jock and Jody Glendenning No. Minnesota Regent

Central Florida Highland Games The 36th Annual Central Florida Highland Games were again held in Winter Springs, Florida. This is a beautiful park venue, bordering Lake Mary, with ample land for all of

the clan tents, parade grounds, athletic fields, dance competitions, vendors, and entertainers. It's a good event and a great way to start the new year. The weather cooperated fully, giving us

cool mornings, plenty of sunshine, and comfortable afternoons. This resulted in large crowds. The members of the council for these games are an experienced group. They are very attentive and cooperative with the clans, the

athletes, the bands, the vendors, and the entertainers. Of course, their primary focus is on the visitors and guests who are usually quite positive in response. These games are well organized, flow smoothly, and are handled with precision.

T. George Douglas, our clan Archivist and local native, was a bit under the weather. Therefore, he and his wonderful wife, Pat, did not attend, this year. He and Pat were sorely missed. T. George was the second Clan Secretary after CDSNA was founded. He and Pat have been to Scotland 13 times. Their knowledge of Scotland and our clan is among the best. They are true assets in discussing our history and heritage.

There is always music in the air at these games. Seven different Pipes and Drums Bands performed throughout the weekend. The host pipe band this year was Rosie O'Grady's Highlanders. They have been in existence for over 30 years and are named after the landmark pub in the Orlando area from which they originated.

The amphitheater stage played host to nine entertainment groups who kept things lively with ballads, familiar Scottish tunes, and Celtic Rock. Two of the groups came over from Scotland for this event.

If you have seen the Disney Pixar animated movie "Brave," you are familiar with the Scottish lassie named "Merida". She is blessed with big blue eyes and flaming red hair. Well, Disney World has the living model of Merida in the form of Caitlyn Boyd. To the delight of both children and parents, Caitlyn was among us all weekend. Caitlyn is 16 years old and 100% Scot, from Brechin, Scotland. She is a busy lass and a charming girl.

The Clan Douglas tent was also visited by Special Guests of the games. They included; Harrell C. Murray III, Lieutenant to the Chief of Clan Murray, Lord Dunrossil, and Chief John Alexander MacArthur (Chief of Clan Arthur). The first two currently reside in the USA where one serves as a British Consulate. Chief John Alexander MacArthur was visiting from his home in Stranrae, Scotland.

Other surprising visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Douglass, of Queensland, Australia. They are making a trip, around the world and were visiting friends in Orlando. They

were quite impressed with all the Scottish activities and the crowds. They were on their way to Scotland for the first time. We gave them Jim Fleming's contact information for their visit to their Douglas ancestral roots. Russell and his wife were guests of John McCormick and his wife, who winter in Lake Mary, FL.The McCormick's spend the summer half of the year in their Scottish home. John is pure Scot, having been born and raised in Paisley. Ironically, John's wife was born and raised in Hitchin, England, another place of which I am familiar. Russell and John had worked together, in Africa or the Middle East, some time back.

It was great visiting again with some of Clan Douglas' wonderful members. It's always warm fellowship and frequently a learning experience. Among our visiting members was Reverend Father Edward Bartle with his wife and many of his family. He and his son, Dan, are encouraging us to attend the Dunedin, FL Scot Games in

April. That is becoming the plan. Expect to read that report in future newsletters. Remember, Father Bartle, your clan awaits your article on why the shield and symbol of the Episcopal Church in the USA includes the blue and white Flag of Scotland (and the Cross of St. Andrew). Father Bartle recently held a "Kirkin of the Tartan" Service in his church. Our Douglas banners were blessed and part of that service. Thank you, sir.

Sharon Acosta, of Lakeland, FL, renewed her Clan Douglas membership and used our tent as her base of operations. Sharon is active in her genealogy research

and raised some interesting questions relating to the history and symbols of Clan Douglas. These questions have been passed on. I believe Sharon now has some answers or clan members to contact who can provide answers.

Likewise, it's always good to see Wendy Proctor and Nancy Gziewski. They don't march with us in the Parade of Tartans. They did, however, give us some loud cheers from the stands as we marched by.

Three new members joined our honored and growing clan. To each of them we extend "Ceud Mile Failte" (A hundred thousand welcomes). These new members include; Christopher Douglass & Family (his lovely wife, Jennifer, and their two cherub daughters -Adele and Colette), David Potter - part of our

Sept Drysdale, and Allison Painter - part of our Sept Morton. It was a treat to meet and welcome each of them. They look forward to receiving the newsletter and visiting upcoming Scot events where Clan Douglas will be present.

Several others visited our tent to share their Scottish heritage, seek more information, and possibly join us. Many took membership applications. Follow-up correspondence has been sent to these people.

We missed seeing some folks who were with us last year. We hope they join us again next year. Thanks to everyone who came by our tent. Thanks to all clan members renewing their memberships.

Our next game will be the Northeast Florida Games, February 23, at the Clay County Fairgrounds. See details, at www.neflgames.co. That is always another good event.

Forward, Marc Hitchins North Florida Regent.

Salado, Texas Highland Games Windy, Windy, Windy, described the 50th annual Scottish Highland Games held November 9-11 in Salado, Texas. We arrived at the city baseball park to see everyone struggling to get their tents up! Even tho it was frustrating, we were all in high spirits and laughing through it all. Friday night starts off the Games with the “The Calling of the Clans” on “College Hill” which is a great area for this event with its crumbling walls located on a plateau that is above the crowd of onlookers and supporters. Each kilted Clan representative is given a torch and as they walk up the hill a piper plays. A spokesperson tells a little history of the Clans and then one by one a Clan rep comes forward and shouts his Clan and war cry. It’s a great event that sets the mood for the Games. Afterward, everyone meets in a hall for finger foods and fellowship.

Saturday morning we met with the wind again but never let it bother us. We continued to go Forward, greeting the people and setting up our tent alongside other Clans! We had good traffic at our tent and welcomed again this year our sweet Kay (Douglas) McRoberts who is always so faithful to come and visit with us in our tent. Dale Douglass, who is from Salado, came with his son Sy and Sy’s two handsome boys making it three generations of Douglases for their family. Also, Dale’s nephew Dallas Douglass came with them. It was great meeting him and visiting with these men. They are a great family.

This year we had many other Douglas members stop by to chat and it was good to see all of them. A lot of folks just drop by to talk and ask

questions about their families and Douglas history and Scotland. “The McGregor” as we call him, came looking for Phil. It seems he brought him some more Douglas Ale with Sir James’s picture on the bottle. Our friend, Patty Campbell, came by to tell us she had retired as her Clan Representative and was moving to Colorado We shall miss her!

We are pleased to welcome three new members: Thomas Douglas, who is from nearby Temple, TX, Katharine

(Glendenning) Farnham, from Houston, TX, and Janet Glendenning from Coppers Cove, TX. We shared our history with those looking for information on their roots as we showed them our pictures of Scotland and books of the castles. They were especially interested in St. Bride Church.

Games Reports

We had several members, old and new, who participated with Phil in the parade! It was a good event in spite of the high winds and promises to be again next year. If you are in this area next year, you are invited to join us. A huge thanks to all the South Texas Clan Douglas members who support us and please remember to renew your memberships in 2013.

Editor’s Note:

In this issue, we have the most complete listings of games since I have been editor, both Eastern states and Western states. Some of the games listed will not have tents because we need members to step forward and become state regents. The placement and operation of clan tents are the main responsibilities of the regents. Won’t you consider becoming a regent?

I also noted that of the many games where we do have tents, quite a few do not send in reports for the newsletter. I think our members would love to read about your experiences and see pictures of your people and activities.
