Diamond Lake this year. Lots of eat-ing and bike riding as well as dancing. We even got in a little swimming asthe hot days made the lake real invit-ing. We camped and partied withenthusiasm in D loop at BrokenArrow this year. We also enjoyed see-ing old friends and making some newdancing friends along the way.
Sundown Round Dance Club held asuccessful benefit dance to help one oftheir youth dancers and her team-mates earn money to attend a nation-al 4H equestrian knowledge competi-tion at the National Stock show inColorado this winter. Central Oregonis sending two teams to the two com-petition events. This is the first timeone geographic area has sent twoteams to this championship. Thereare seven young ladies on the twoteams and the round dancers enjoyedthe dancing opportunity to help themwith their fund raising effort. Thegirls brought the food to our dance, and they had a good time trying outround dancing also.

“Celebrate Freedom” was our danceJuly 10th. There was much red, white, and blue in our dancers' cos-tumes. The food was potluck with aheavy reliance on picnic stuff—hotdogs with all the fixings, salads, anddesserts. Too much good food!
Our July 24th dance went dark sothat members could attend DiamondLake Festival.
Forty-five or 50 members attendedour annual club picnic on August2nd. Eugene was sweltering in 100°temperatures, and we spent much ofthe afternoon huddling under tentsand umbrellas, but the heat didn'tkeep us from once again eating our-selves half silly. Our collective thanksto Gaynor Hintz for giving us the useof her back yard.

SETS-IN-ORDERCoquille
Surprise! Sets-in-Order are alive andwell. I feel like Vivian once said—if thereisn't something real neat to write aboutdon't write. Square dancing is always“neat,” but we haven't had anythingspectacular to report about. However, this last Tuesday we danced at the CoosCounty Fair, and it was “spectacular”!We had over three squares—with the hotweather we were very pleased! Everyonereally showed how much fun squaredancing is. That is what it is all about, and people notice it. Let’s all keep up theexcitement when we dance and show it.
The coast is always cool, so come onover.

We certainly had more than ourshare of blue skies and hot weather inRoseburg during July. Although thingswere “cooking” temperature wise lastmonth, we opened the windows, cranked the fans up, and danced despitethe heat. A small but enthusiasticgroup of Buckeroos ventured toDiamond Lake for the Festival and had
a grand time dancing both at the work-shops and at the dances. A group ofvolunteers cut, stapled and glued fanstogether to promote fall lessons thatwere passed out at the Douglas CountyFair.

Oregon State Federation ReportWow! What a nice time I had at
Diamond Lake this year. Theweather was perfect for the occasion. As always, the lake was very beauti-ful. Lots of people around boatingand fishing doing the vacation thing;and then there were those squaredancers, clicking their little heelsagainst the wooden floor (set-up andsupplied by the Star Promenaders)until late at night dancing under thestars. The dancers showed theirexpertise under the watchful eyes ofDan Nordby, National Caller, andcuer Tami Helms. (Even the mosqui-tos had a few squares--and they did aswell job! Just a few itches with nomistakes.)
Don Korner, the Diamond LakeChairman, said they had one of thebest festivals in a long time with 250-300 dancers attending. I met somesquare dancers from Canada whowere having a great time. TheDiamond Lake Lodge put on the BBQ
Friday and Saturday mainly for theout-of-town guests, callers and cuers.
Wednesday included callers andcuers from the floor. Wayne Weaverthe club caller, did a really swell jobThursday all day and on Fridaymorning. This is the 36th year of theDiamond Lake Festival, and it seemsto get better each year. Next year'sFestival our National Caller will beNassar Shukayr, and the NationalCuer will be Sharon and Casey Parker.
River City Riders WowNational Convention
Yep, you guessed it. Those RiverCity Dancers and their horses (TheRiver City Riders) trailed their way toCalifornia to ride in the NationalConvention this year. It wasn't goldthey were searching for—it was funand excitment. They found it in LongBeach.
They are really good. They alsoleave the floors clean when they
leave! There were 22 members withthe Horse Riders, including Les Seeley. They performed six times onThursday, Friday, and Saturday infront of several hundred people. TheConvention Committee People playedthe crowd up until the performanceletting them think that real horseswere going to perform. What a sur-prise to see Jim Hunt leading Maryaround with a bridle in her mouth, carrying a saddle--no, no that’s just ajoke! Both Mary and Jim concurredthat Long Beach Convention Centerwas very beautiful with large rooms;plenty of restaurants and motels withshops galore. The weather was per-fect for their stroll along the wharf asthey enjoyed the fragrant smells ofthe ocean breezes. Sounds like a lovestory, huh? The River City Riders havebeen formally invited to perform atnext years' convention also. Way togo, River City Riders!

The festival is moving along verywell. We will be doing a tour of the
newest State park, Thompson Mill. Wewill have complete details next month, but we will be using a 28-passengerbus, so if you are interested please con-tact Chuck and Sandy Eddings [email protected]. We will becharging $10 per person for this tourplus the fee to enter the park. We willhave a box lunch prepared also, whichwill be catered by the Cascade GrillRestaurant. We will have the total pricewith all the details in the next article.
Now for the betterment of Mid-Winter Festival, we would like torespond to a letter to the editor in theJuly issue of the OFN. This article con-cerned the amount of time we have forNew Dancers in the program for Mid-Winter. We realize the time slotted forNew Dancers and A-1 is not the perfector ideal. However, what the author ofthis letter should know as a caller is
that you can only work with the facili-ty we have, and that does not make itfeasible to dedicate a complete hall toNew Dancers or A-1. If this person canguarantee at least 10 squares of newdancers or would like to add moneyinto the budget to pay for another hall, which would have to be the CascadePavilion, with no heat and at another
great expense, then we will have towork with what we have. The programfor New Dancers seems to work, although admittedly the hall becamewarm at some times because of the size.We are more than likely going to keepthat same program this year. We believeif the callers with new dancers havestarted the lessons early enough, thenthe New Dancers should be ready forMid-Winter dancing in the Mainstreamhall.
Admittedly, this may be a concern tothe new dancers but if the clubs whoare giving them lessons accompanythem in the Mainstream hall for at leasttwo tips, they would then probably feelcomfortable dancing. We know thismay not be the answer for NewDancers, but we have to consider howbest to meet the needs of over 1,200dancers at all levels. We want this to bea great dancing experience for everyonewho attends. Everyone has a hall todance in at sometime. With this facilitythat is the best we can do.
We are working on some differentraffle items for 2010 along with thecasinos. More information on this willbe in next month's article. We are think-ing of raffling a whitewater raft trip ora cruise on the Columbia on the paddle-wheel boat. More to come next month.
