The Locksmith Security Association of Michigan
Hello Everyone, I heard that last month’s meeting went well. I did not make it because of the weather. John Hubel gave a presentation on the Master trailer tongue lock and talked about the Sandusky wardrobe cabinet lock and how to service it. John Bockert did an in-service about doors and how to properly measure/spec them. The class was held in the cafeteria but will be back to our regular meeting room in March.
This month I plan on continuing with the hands-on theme. We covered picking a lock and shimming to rekey it. The planned topic will be Master Keying. If you have never done this, then you should attend this meeting. This is something that as a locksmith you should absolutely know how to do. Once you learn this skill you should be able to make more money. Know-ing how to Master Key will have you one-up on the local hard-ware guy who only knows how to rekey a lock. Also, h needs to
have an existing key. You don’t. If you already know how to do this then you can help those who are still learning. As I have said before, if you have a certain topic that you would like to see cov-ered at one of our meetings, let me know. Plus, we have formed a com-mittee on researching different areas to hold our meetings, cost and lo-cation being a concern. Any thoughts? Bring them up at the meeting. See you then,

“Pitch #2: Search Engine Optimization”
. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is defined as the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or web page to users of a web search engine (Source: Wikipedia). It should come as no surprise that SEO is a major part of marketing strategies for companies, big and small. They want customers and potential customers to find them online and use their services or buy their products. Scammers recognized the value of SEO early on and hitched their wagon to it. Collectively, they pour millions of dollars into SEO efforts so that when a person searches for a locksmith on Google or Bing, they pop up first and not you. So how do you combat that? Turns out, it’s not that hard. First, realize that Google and Bing really don’t like picking winners and losers. They want relevant search results for their users; that’s what keeps users coming back after all. By using proprietary algorithms, search engines do their best to deliver results that match the user’s expectations based on their search. It’s not that scammers are paying millions directly to Google or Bing to be at the top of organic results; they’re simply paying web developers and other online specialists to structure their website(s), via SEO, in a way that does it. Scammers and their website(s) are still (mostly) playing by the same rules that you and I would, they’re just outsourcing the work. Second, SEO isn’t that hard to figure out or use to your bene-fit. Can you login to Facebook? Can you write an email? Can you change settings on your thermostat? Great, you’re qualified! There are countless free instructionals and tutorials online that will get you up to speed on SEO and how to practice it with your website. I guarantee your local library has a book or two or three on the subject as well. Before I leave, I’ll share a case study to hopefully relay how easy this is. I updated our company web-site late last year and spent no more than 3 hours improving its SEO to hit on a few search strings. Things like “Medeco Atlanta” “Medeco dealer Atlanta” “master key systems Atlanta”. Once finished, I waited for the search engines to notice the change and make adjustments to their results. Final results? Our website is now on the first page for all of those search strings, and more. In some cases, we’re at the top of the first page. Countless studies show that consumers typically only look at the first page of search results and overwhelmingly choose a company listed on that page when shopping for products or services. That’s fantastic news for us because that is right where we are. Learn SEO, put it into practice, and start reaping the benefits of it. You’ll gain more business and knock the scammers down a peg, and search result, or two.

“New Use: Hinge Doctor”
New and unique way to use the GKL products Hinge Dr. for proper door alignment. Using the already great hinge repair and alignment system of the hinge Dr. With the door in the closed position, I use the crescent wrench to apply pres-sure and make adjustment. If you add 1-3 airbags on the opening side if the door, thus will keep pressure on the door forcing it to the proper alignment and keeping the hinges flat while making the adjustment or re-swedging the hinge back to its original form! Thus prevents pinching and possibly V effect that can happen during adjustments. Happy locksmithing.
