It is hard to believe were are almost half way through this year. Where has the time gone? This will be our last meeting before we take a break for the summer months. I really appreciate Jim Whidden, taking the last meeting since I was out on a medical issue. I am happy to report I am just now getting back on my feet and working full time again. I am healing quite well and am back to normal. This certainly as not planned, but it has worked out as good as it could. I am excited to look forward to our LSA 40th Anniversary Tiger Game Party! Please plan to join us at Comerica Park on Sunday, August 13, 2017. We have reserved the Chevrolet Pavilion, and they will be serving us a picnic style dinner during the game! LSA will be covering half of the expense for this event. The cost is $37.00 per person. Please plan to come and pay to reserve your tickets! [Flyer in this newsletter] We are opening this up to your family and friends as well. So this will be on a first come basis! Also, a huge thank you to Bullseye Safe Deposit locks for their generous support to LSA. We appreciate your help with educating our members! We had an excellent meeting last month learning about safe deposit locks. See you in June and August!

The ”Claim to Fame” by Falcon Locks of South Gate, California back in the early 1960s was the first SFIC to use the slide cover instead of the individually capped chambers as Ar-row & BEST were using. They were also the first to use the C-clip to hold the plug in place as opposed to a bradded-on backplate. The core was not otherwise unusual, except for the fact that the keyway was often stamped onto the face of the plug...UGH!! The exploded view here shows the updated core of the early 1990s with no keyway stamp and a changeover to a bradded-on backplate.

Ray’s Ways — “Let’s Talk Pricing”
-by Ray Sinai, CML
LSA Newsletter Editor; Past LSA President
It wasn’t until one of our members, Aron Boag, mentioned something at our Locksmith Security Asso-ciation (LSA) meeting that I really took notice. Aron mentioned the annual article in the Locksmith Ledger Magazine regarding the National Average Price Survey. He also mentioned raising some of his pricing imme-diately after reading the article. Shortly thereafter, I took a look at the National Average Price Survey that was printed in the Locksmith Ledger Magazine in January of 2017. You too, can go to www.locksmithledger.com Look up the national average price survey. The magazine polls their subscribers for answers to a number of pricing questions. The Locksmith Ledger makes a disclaimer statement that this survey "is only an indicator of pricing trends and is not a scientific poll.”
As you can imagine, some locksmiths in some areas didn’t respond and there could be some responses that were not quite truthful. In any event, the re-sponses obtained should assist you in an educated method of restructuring your prices. Perhaps you are completely satisfied with your current pricing and you have no plan to make any changes. I respond by saying that you should, at the very least, consider what average pricing is in our industry. Take five minutes to look over the price list. As stated in the article, pricing will vary by many factors. I remember at
one ALOA convention I attended, a locksmith from Manhattan mentioned that he spends hundreds of dollars per week on parking fines. Double parking and parking illegally is a must in a crowded city environment. The cost of living, the distance traveled to jobs, the local competition, your particular area of expertise, and other factors may determine pricing as well. In the days when we used Yellow Pages advertising as the standard, I remember mentioning to my Yel-
low Pages representative that the prices seemed to go up every year. His response at the time was “if you are
not raising your pricing every 12 to 18 months, you are behind the times.” With the exception of the price of gasoline (and possibly a few other commodities) what prices stay the same or go down? Another very recent change (for my company) in my pricing structure has been a flat fee versus the hourly rate. I will summarize by saying that if you are very proficient at a particular job and you can accom-plish it in a shorter amount of time, should you be held “captive” by an hourly rate. If I can install a piece of door hardware faster because I have installed it many times, it becomes more profitable to charge a flat fee rather than the hourly rate. It is a lot easier to invoice a customer for a flat fee than to present a customer an in-voice for 4 hours of labor when you finished the job in 3 ½ hours. Yes, they are paying attention. I personally want to thank Aron Boag for bringing up that article at our meeting. I have since raised some of my pricing and plan on more changes in the near future. Consider looking at your pricing, be more profitable. I don’t know anyone with too much money! Regards, Ray Sinai
