As the headline suggest, Volksfest will be less than one month away by the time the July meeting rolls around. I haven’t heard otherwise, so I have to assume that all the big items are under control, but as us veterans all know, there’s always a load of small last minute crisis to deal with. With the rainy start to our Summer season, we can only hope that the weather will once again cooperate, and give us yet another picture perfect day. The majority of the meeting will be looking at all the final details that need to be attended to leading up to the show. Be ready to sign the volunteer book that Ryan Cisco will be passing around. This is certainly another Volksfest coming up, number 26. Just doesn’t seem possible does it? Plan to make the month of July one of preparation leading up to Volksfest 26! The weekend previous to the meeting, July 8th and 9th will be two of the biggest annual car events in Co- lumbus, as the Dublin Arthritis Show and the Good Guys Street Rod Show will both be in town. The June meeting was our annual picnic at Blendon Woods; and it is now history. It was a good time -and lots of good food (I ate too much).

Mark Richmond made a presentation about the Arthritis Show which is held in Dublin, July 7 through 9. Because of dissatisfaction with the way VW’s have been treated at this show the last few years, Mark decided to step up and do something about it. With help from Mike Young and Brad Shisler, he has secured trophies and a good parking spot for the COVVC. He is also planning a hospitality tent with snacks. He hopes for a good VW turn out. Please check out the Arthiritis website or contract Mark for more details.

The event consists of three separate activities. Members are invited to do one or all of them.

July 7 Tour July 8 Cruise-In July 9 Show

We had the first delivery of the Volksfest 26 Shirts. They look great! Don’t forget to get yours early.

Kathy Kern reminded everyone to get their show pre-registrations sent in.

Ryan Cisco also reminded everyone that we still need volunteers for our show.

Next month’s meeting will be held at the Garrett’s house. Bring a chair, a dish to share and your favorite beverage. We will be going over some final show prep.

VW TECH...Tips, TriCks, Tools & rEpairs BruCE amaCkErReplacing Rotted Panels Continued.....

Finally to the Paint Process

Last month I left off talking about primer, at this point you should have the primer laid and blocked out so that it’s flat. You’ve hit it with a guide coat and re-sanded it, and you’ve sprayed some solvent on it to check the reflection. Shooting some solvent/degreaser on it allows you to see it in a wet state with a gloss like it will have when it’s completed and at a car show. Obviously this gives you an idea how the reflection will look and if you need more sanding or you’ve arrived at the desired flatness. The blocking is the hardest part of the entire process because it’s tedious and there’s no definitive spot where you’re “done”, it’s all a matter of opinion. Some guys (not me) will block for days on a panel striving for perfection. Me, I’m a 4 foot kind of guy. My stuff looks great until you get up really close where the ripples and pimples can be seen. My bus looks great at a glance but will never win Best Paint in Show. That’s for perfectionists and trailer queen vehicles which will never be my kind of car. I’m into practical. That means driving considerable miles regularly and not getting upset about chips in the front or small blemishes. That also means simplicity, because if I need to do a spot in or touch up I don’t want to spend a ton of time doing it.

Finally to Paint Continued........... You now have to decide what kind of paint you’re going to use and if you’ll use sealer(s) or not. I’m old school. That means I remember the ‘60’s and the simplicity of “how we used to do it”. The way paint done way back when was much simpler than today. Back then you basically had enamel or lacquer and not the endless va-riety of different chemical coatings that we have today. These days you have to be a chemist, knowing which base coat, clear coat, solvent, hardener, reducer, and activator all play well together. You have to have a friendly face at the paint store (automotive paint, not home paint!) that will guide you through the endless combinations of “stuff” that you need to know. I strive for simplicity in most everything I do and paint is one of them.

Many bodymen would cringe at the fact that I don’t use a sealer, I don’t use 5 kinds of primer, and I don’t take the steps many bodymen consider necessary to shoot paint on a car. Maybe I’m just lucky. I also cringe at the use of water based paints, although I know nearly every new car and most bodyshops use these almost exclusively today. Maybe I’ll someday break down and learn the new technology, but then again maybe not. Probably not. Anyway, back to simplicity. I use one primer for everything, and I use one color system for everything. Yes, I’ve shot basecoat/clearcoat a few times with excellent results, but I don’t like the fussing that BC/CC requires. You shoot the color, then after a certain amount of time you shoot the clear over it. I get it. I just don’t like it. The more paint I shoot, the more likely I am to put runs in it. That’s just the kind of painter I am. You see, shooting car paint is an art, and it takes a lot of skill. If you shoot paint on a regular basis, this comes natural to you and putting runs, sags, dry spots and other screwups doesn’t really happen to you. Me on the other hand, if I’m shooting paint it’s an unusual thing. I’ve probably painted 50 vehicles in my life, which is slightly more than one a year for the years I’ve been wrenching. This means I’m not 100% comfortable with a gun in my hand (paint gun, bozo). When I’m shooting I’m nervous, sweating, trying to remember what I’m forgetting, and there’s always something there. Back to simplicity. I’d rather shoot single stage, which is the modern term for enamel. That means you shoot it once, no clear coat, and you’re done. However I’m not good enough to get the finish perfect which means I’m wet sanding and buffing when I’m done. No big deal. Also there’s another reason I want to shoot single stage: SS is much easier to touch up than BC/CC. With SS obviously you’re only mixing and shooting one set of compo-nents and not two, which cuts your mess in half. There’s a few places on my bus that needed fixing, like either a big run, or a big snot that the gun blew out, or the paint reacted with the primer like there was oil on the surface or something. I allowed the (bad) paint to dry thoroughly over a few days, sand it smooth to get the blemish out, and reshoot color. Let it set up a few days, and wet sand (more on this later). Once it’s wet sanded and buffed, the repair is completely invisible. Even if I point it out to you it’s impossible to see the blend line. That’s why I like single stage.

Now that I’ve blubbered on and ran out of space for this month I’ll talk about the different paints available next month and why I chose what I did. Now it’s summer, get that VW out and run it! We’ll see you next month at VolksFest 26!

Toys, Curios & ColleCTibles

Welcome back everyone!!

The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month was produced by a very well-known German toy manufacturer. As promised, here’s another toy which came from a VW collection I was lucky enough to purchase several years ago in Pennsylvania. I hope to write about other VW toys from this collection in future articles.

The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month was manufactured by the Gama Toy Company of Germany during the early to mid-1960s. This diecast VW bus is 7 inches long and represents a German fire truck. The body is mounted on a sturdy plastic chassis with metal axles and rubber tires. The toy also has metal button headlights, a plastic VW logo, and painted signals front and rear. The rubber fire hose is wound around a reel and attaches to the rear of the toy. The red rubber ball in the center of the bed pumps water through the fire hose. It’s fun to pretend you are racing off to a fire as you push the toy around the room.

This toy is very rare. Very few examples of this toy ever come up for sale. In my many years of collecting, I’ve only seen a few examples for sale, and none of them came with a box. I’ve often wondered if this toy wasn’t a big seller or if kids just didn’t take care of their little VW toy. The value of this toy in good condition with no box is around $85 to $125, with a mint example with no box coming in around $250 - $275. It’s not uncommon though to see this toy sell well above these figures when collectors get into a bidding war over the same car.

Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !!

Summer is here, and that means GRILLING!Check out these cool VW themed grill gadgets.
