Learning is measured through role-play and inter-preter evaluation tools.The Art of Medical Interpretation 54-hour training program has been approved by the AmericanTranslators Association for 5 Continuing Education Points.

Class size is limited to 30 interpreters and features spoken lan-guages only. Language coaches and target language glossarieswill be provided to groups of 3 or more interpreters working ineach target language.

All applicants must pass a mandatory pre-screening exam inEnglish and target language(s) prior to acceptance in pro-gram.There is a pre-screening fee of $30.

Advanced Skills for Medical Interpreters(These workshops are open to interpreters who have alreadyundergone at least 40 hours of formal interpreter training)

June 28 (6 - 9:30 PM)The Power of Language in the Circulatory SystemInstructor: Richard S. Lane, MD

This workshop is an introduction to the elements of the lan-guage of medicine. Participants will learn about roots of med-ical terms derived from ancient Greek and Latin and how tofigure out the meanings of such words using the Samuraimethod.These techniques are designed to help the participantmaster the language of medicine while avoiding “rote” memo-rization. In this workshop, participants will also be introducedto the circulatory system through an experiential activity andbegin to learn “the story” behind the logic, structure, andpathology of the heart, arteries and veins.

This workshop is an introduction to the disease known as dia-betes.The first hour will concentrate on who gets the disease,why there is an epidemic of diabetes, and how the inability tomanage blood sugar is just the tip of the iceberg for this com-plex disease.The second hour will review different body sys-tems affected by diabetes and review the multiple approachesto treatment that are currently available.

July 19 (6 - 9:30 PM)Cross Cultural Issues and the Challenge of Palliative Care atthe End of LifeInstructor: Richard S. Lane, MD

This workshop will discuss the subspecialty of Palliative Careand how cross-cultural issues can arise in the practice of thiswork. Participants will discuss the difference between pallia-tive medicine and hospice, and explore issues of sensitivity andcompetency.The group will review a complex palliative carecase and see how we can move from cultural sensitivity to cul-tural competency in an end-of-life situation involving a patientand family from a non-dominant culture living in the UnitedStates.

July 26 (6 - 9:30 PM)A Breath of Fresh Air: The Pulmonary SystemInstructor: Richard S. Lane, MD

This workshop provides an overview of the structure of thelungs and how they function, along with a introduction to vari-ous respiratory ailments, including asthma, chronic obstructivelung disease, and various infectious conditions that can causepneumonia, bronchitis and ultimately restrictive or obstructiveproblems. A review of treatment and medicines will also bepresented.

Legal Interpreter Training

The Fundamentals of Legal Interpretation -60-hour Certificate ProgramSeptember 16-November 25(Sundays 9AM-2PM)Instructor: Frank Geoffrion

This program will clarify the legal interpreter's rolethrough the discussion of state and federal guide-lines. Students will concentrate on mastering thetechniques of legal interpretation and will partici-pate in a series of interpreting-related activitiesdesigned to stimulate short-term memory develop-ment. Such activities include learning to "listen formeaning", shadowing, dual-task training, para-phrasing, sight translation, and consecutive inter-preting. Students will also develop English and tar-get language proficiency with concentration on ter-minology specific to legal matters.

Zarita Araujo-Lane, LICSW is the president andfounder of Cross Cultural Communication Systems,Inc. She has over 25 years experience working withcross-cultural populations in medical and mentalhealth organizations. Ms. Araujo-Lane was thedirector of a mental health cross-cultural team forover ten years at Health and Education Services inthe North Shore area. She has published articles in

Cross Cultural Management including a chapter written in 1996 and2005 on “Portuguese Families” for the book, Ethnicity and FamilyTherapy by Monica McGoldrick second and third edition. Ms. Araujo-Lane leads the creative team responsible for development of The Artof Medical Interpretation training material series, and has authoredmultiple articles for publications of the American TranslatorsAssociation and other scholarly journals.

Vonessa Phillips Costa is the Director of theCross Cultural Communication Institute atCCCS, Inc. She is a legal and medical interpretertrained at Bentley College in Massachusetts towork in the Portuguese<>English language pairs.Ms. Costa also coordinates translation services atCross Cultural Communication Systems,Inc. She is a member of the

Massachusetts Medical Interpreters Associationand the American Translators Association,and has contributed articles to publica-tions of both organizations. Ms. Costacurrently teaches medical interpreta-tion and travels nationwide to pres-ent on issues related to interpret-ing and cultural competency, andis part of the creative teamresponsible for the develop-ment of The Art of MedicalInterpretation training mate-rial series.

Instructor Biographies

Dr. Richard S. Lane is anInternist in the Extended CareFacility Program at HarvardVanguard Medical Associatesof Boston, Massachusetts. Dr.Lane is an Associate Memberof the American College ofPhysicians and a Member of

the Society of General Internal Medicine. He is abilingual educator, fluent in Spanish. Dr. Lane’sinterest are the doctor/patient relationship,teaching interview skills to medical students andresidents, cross-cultural communication in medi-cine, care of elderly patients in rehabilitation andsub-acute units and integration of knowledge-based business practices with quality medical

care. Dr. Lane became boardcertified in Palliative Care andHospice Medicine in 2004, andhe is currently the MedicalDirector of Affinity Hospicefor Life of Massachusetts.

Frank Geoffrion is a federallycertified court interpreter,

Massachusetts certified court interpreter, andAmerican Translators Association accredited totranslate from Spanish to English. Mr. Geoffrionis a faculty member at the Agnes Haury NationalInstitute for Interpretation at the University ofArizona and an Adjunct Professor of Legal andMedical Interpretation at Boston University. Hewas a consultant to the Federal CourtInterpretation Certification Project and adminis-tered the Federal Court Interpreter OralCertification Examination in Arizona, NewMexico and Texas.
