WFI Says Goodbye to Three Outstanding Fellows

As the fall season comes to a close and we progress into the winter months, WFI bids goodbye to Ger-man fellow Kati Brueck-ner, Chinese fellow Shouxin Xie, and Taiwan-ese fellow Yu-jen Lin. They all contributed so much to our program dur-ing their time here and will be greatly missed. Kati returned home to Ber-lin in November with her husband Steffen and daughter Clara in tow after completing her six month fellowship here. A week after her return home, Kati writes that she was still re-covering from jet lag, but very excited to share all the pictures of the wonderful things she saw here with her family. During her fellow-ship, Kati worked to under-stand the social and scien-tific complexities surround-ing the creation and imple-mentation of the NW Forest Plan. She interviewed numerous people directly involved with the plan and discovered the many intrica-cies that made it one of the landmark forest management decisions of its time. More about the results of her study can be found on the WFI

Xie will resume work as the Division Director for the Department of Forest Re-source Management at China’s State Forestry Administration after a short break to readjust to being back at home after a year’s absence. Xie spent his year at WFI studying policy and management styles of sustainable forestry and will use the knowledge gained during his fellowship to help guide decisions back home. Already, he is looking back fondly on his time here at WFI and writes that everything he learned during his time here he will share and

apply to his work and life in the future. Yu-jen is our most recent departee, leaving just after the Christmas holiday for home in Taipei. He is happy to be back at home with is wife, but also misses Port-land and the WFI. After spending nearly a year here studying biomass utilization processes, Yu-jen returned home with a research pro-posal in hand, ready to pre-sent to his work unit at the

Taiwan Forestry Re-search Institute. Yu-jen did exhaustive research regarding methods and materials used for for-est biomass utilization in the Pacific North-west. His research led him to the idea of using the bamboo resources readily available in Taiwan to make wood pellets for energy. He will propose this re-search upon his return to work and hopes to propel Taiwan towards the biomass utilization

industry.

Reforestation Tour Contrasts Public and Private The BLM, USFS, and Cas-cade Timber hosted the fellows over the course of a two-day tour through the Willamette Valley to learn about reforestation. BLM’s Tyrell Seed Or-chard and USFS’s Dorena Genetic Resource Center were toured, providing insight into the goals these public agencies have for reforestation of federal and private lands. These agen-cies work hard to provide genetically sound and high quality seed stock of west-ern forest species for re-planting efforts. USFS works mostly with white pines, while BLM is work-ing mostly with Doug-fir. “This activity gave me the idea that different institu-

tions have different purposes,” says Chinese fellow Shouxin Xie of the two agencies. The second day of the tour covered the activities of the private forestry consulting firm Cascade Timber, Inc, which manages over 150,000 acres of land. Fellows were excited to see an active ground-logging operation take

WFI Welcomes Two New Interns for the Winter Season

Recent Events place, with log loaders and trucks present. The manage-ment techniques of the timber sale were discussed and refor-estation plans were shared. Congolese fellow Elikia Amani learned more about the rules implemented under the Oregon Forest Practices Act and remarked, “Where there is a stream, they protect the land near the stream.”

Winter is arriving in Ore-gon, bringing with it colder temperatures and our famous rain. While this is challenging to all of us, especially those who are used to warmer and drier climates, it also pro-vides time to work in ear-nest. Beneath the gloom, new growth is taking form. In this spirit, the World Forest Institute welcomes two new interns, Danielle and Kirk, to the team this winter. Danielle grew up in Cali-fornia and has loved the forests of the Pacific Northwest since she was a little girl. She moved to Portland a year and a half ago. Before moving here she interned at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Re-search, where she analyzed differences in alpine forest characteristics along an

elevation gradient as proxies for climate change. Danielle is applying for a Master’s degree at Portland State Uni-versity for the fall of 2010. Kirk has been working his way west throughout his life. Born in Philadelphia, he grew up in Minneapolis. Kirk moved to Portland about ten years ago, after attending the Anthropology Film Center in Santa Fe,

New Mexico. He comes to WFI as he is finishing his master’s degree in interna-tional management at Port-land State University. He brings media and manage-ment skills to the position and also speaks some Span-ish and Mandarin. He is especially excited by the opportunity to work with forestry professionals from all over the world. After the internship, he has a scholar-ship to continue studying Mandarin in Shanghai, China.

Field Trip on Ecotrust property with Oregon BOF

International Educators Institute

Term: July 11-16, 2010 Apply by: February 28, 2010 The International Educators Institute is an innovative forest study tour for environ-mental educators and forest researchers. Combining con-tent-rich, hands-on experi-ences in the field with a mul-ticultural exchange of best practices in education and research, IEI seeks to ad-vance effective teaching and learning about social, eco-nomic, and environmental challenges facing the world’s forests. World-class scenery, special behind-the-scenes tours, and interviews with local people are com-bined with peer-to-peer lead-ership development.

benefits of ecosystem-based forest management. The po-tential for access into carbon markets was just one of the many topics discussed throughout the day. Australian fellow Roslyn Henricks thought “…it was interesting to see the flip-side to typical forest management practices.” Furthermore, the fellows had the opportunity to meet and

discuss broader forestry issues with BOF members and Oregon Department of Forestry staff. It was especially nice to see ex-WFC president John Blackwell, now BOF chair. Overall, the day was fun and informative despite the stormy weather, and the field trip ended with a stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory – a must-see for those who hadn’t been before!

This November, WFI welcomed a 14-person Chinese delegation from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry. WFI fellow Ke Dong (China) hosted the delegation as they spent a week touring forestry establish-ments in the Pacific Northwest.

In early November, Port-land-based non-profit group Ecotrust hosted a field tour for the Oregon Board of Forestry and the WFI Fel-lows. The tour was of the Garibaldi tract of land that is owned and managed by an Ecotrust subsidiary, Ecotrust Forest Management, LLC. The approximately 5,000 acre tract sits mostly within state owned and managed forest. Ecotrust staff shared their management visions for the land. With a newly-developed management plan just out this year, Ecotrust looks to manage their forests using a whole-ecosystem approach. Fellows braved the stormiest weather of the early season, with wind gusts up to 60mph on the mountain ridges and driving rain for most of the day to learn about the many
