April 2019 Presidents CornerHow quickly the weather changes. We’ve gone from record snow fall in February to record high temps in March. Spring is here and it feels great to get outside, work around the house or better yet get to the golf course. One of our new Community Affiliates is the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. If you are looking for a golf course and/or country club to join, check them out. Another new Community Affiliate is McClouds Grill House in East Bremerton. They offer a unique atmosphere and are always doing “something” at the restaurant. Andy Graham is the proprietor and is a great supporter of our military! We had a great presentation on how the Navy uses dolphins and seals to protect not only the Navy, but our country in general. Mary Ryan, curator at the Naval Undersea museum at Keyport was the presenter. Our April speaker will be Captain Paradise, Commanding Officer of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN70). Please remember to sign up for the Navy League Armed Forces Gala on May 18 at the Admiral Theater where Admiral Caldwell will be our guest speaker. Tickets are now on sale.

March Luncheon - Mary Ryan
Our March Luncheon speaker, Mary Ryan, had the audience's attention through her presentation on Marine Mammals. She talked about the use of Dolphins and Sea Lions in support of the US Navy. They serve in three roles - Mine Detection, Intrusion Defense and Object Recovery. She showed a video of the mammals in action, discussed how they complete their tasks and how long they could stay submerged (7 minutes for dolphins and 20 minutes for sea lions). The Marine Mammals program has been in place for 56 years. The presentation was facinating from start to finish. A big thank you to Mary for this very informative presentation.

2019 Seabee BallWhen war is declared or battle lines are drawn, someone gets a call to go into action in inhospitable environments where, chances are, there are no roads, no electrical power, no runways, no water supply, no gas stations, no grocery stores – All things a military force needs to prosecute a combat operation. Who has to have the mental ingenuity, the guts and the wherewithal to get the
job done in short order? – The United States Naval Construction Battalions (CB), better known as the Seabees.
They work the unworkable, create the impossible and, out of nowhere, suddenly the desert, the jungle, the rain forest, no man’s land is transformed into front line facilities.
The Seabees are an incredibility skilled and versatile unit. They are well educated, diverse, versatile, adaptable and skilled in their capabilities. They are not just a bunch of guys doing a construction job for fun, but specialists called upon with monotonous regularity to do what no other unit can do. Leslie Yuenger, NAVFAC PAO, selected a lovely location, the Kiana Lodge, for the 77th annual Seabee Birthday Ball. The Kiana Lodge is on the shore just south of Suquamish, Washington. Everything ran like clockwork as expected. The Lodge was filled with Sailors, Seabees, in full dress uniform with ribbons on their chests and spouses and dates dressed equally beautifully. It looked like a scene from a turn-of-the-century ball that could have been set in any one of a dozen European capitals.
