HOT!! 17th Annual Fluke Tournament HOT!!

Through the heat of what could be the hottest day of the year, the fisher-

men moved their boats out of the inlet at 6 am on Saturday, July 23, to

start our 17th Annual Fluke Fishing Tournament. They floated out into

the ocean and dropped their lines in anticipation of catching that large

Fluke that would win them a prize in this year’s Tournament.

When they returned and weighed their fish, we got the results of their

efforts. The winner of this year’s tournament in the Power Boat division

was Peter Fanizzi of Union Beach, NJ, with a fish that weighed 11 lbs. 9

oz. Second place went to

William Zebrowski of Wall, NJ, whose fish weighed 11 lbs. 3 oz. William

also won the prize for an Elk member. Third place went to Wayne Hurly

of New Egypt, NJ, with a fish that weighed in at 10 lbs. Fourth place went

to Lou DeRosa of Toms River, NJ, whose fish weighed 9 lbs. Fifth place

went to Bob Madej of Iselin, NJ, whose fish weighed 8 lbs. 9 oz. Sixth

place went to Dave Arbeitman of Point Pleasant, NJ, whose fish weighed

8 lbs. 8 oz. Seventh place went to Ed Braunsdorf of Brick, NJ, whose fish

weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. The youth prize went to Ryan Marut, 11 years old, of

Toms River, NJ.

The winners in the Kayak division were: first place Bill Kiluk with a 22 inch

long fluke; second place was Chris Shoplock with a 20 inch fluke; third

place was Frank Healy with a 19.5 inch fluke. First place Calcutta Longest

was Capt. John Kravchak with a 27 inch fluke and first place Calcutta 3

Longest was Larry Newman and Gary Ward with a combined 61.5 inches.

While the fishermen were enjoying themselves out on the water, our

Members were sweltering in the heat either at the weigh stations waiting

for the fishermen to return or back at the Lodge preparing for the picnic

later in the day.

The Fluke Tournament Committee would like to thank all of the Members of our Lodge that came out in the heat on both Friday for the

Captains Meeting and Saturday for the Tournament to man the grills, beer truck, bar, and anything else that had to be done. Also, all of

the Members that were there all during the week to help in the set up. Special thanks to Julie Grassi for once again taking care of our

Silent Auction, the Veterans Committee for running the 50/50, and the Special Needs Children’s Committee for running the Calcutta.

It looks like we have had another successful Tournament and now we can start looking forward to

the 2012 Tournament!!

world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being,

let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again!”

Fraternally,

Scot

2011 Memorial Golf Tournament

by Michael Donahue

The day dawned brightly. The heat and

humidity hovered at acceptable levels. And,

most importantly, 80 golfers drove off at 8:30

am, July 25, 2011, for the benefit of our Lodges’

Charities, at Woodlake Country Club in Lake-

wood, NJ.

The Golf Committee consisted of co-

chairs Mike Donahue and ER Scot Famous, as

well as Jan Picarell, Jay Ramirez, and Gary Smith.

They would like to thank the following sponsors:

Hatteras Press; The Broadway Bar & Grill (Linda

DeDreux especially); US Subs; Mike’s Subs; The

Idle Hour; Pable & Evertz Funeral Home; Re/Max

Bay Point Realty; TravelSmiths; PBA Local 106;

Fugedy and McLees; Beaver Dam Hardware;

Lynne’s Ladies Fashions; Ocean County Music

and Electronics; Lee Richards fine jewelry; and

STS Tires. Two benefactors continued their tra-

dition of generosity: Don and Sandy Famous

and long time contributors, Dee and Cus Dalik,

PDD.

The committee would like to single out

the companies who provided prizes: All 3 local

beer companies, Paige and Richie, Shore Point,

and Point Distributors. The Hole in One Prizes

doubled with the addition of a complimentary

car from Larson Ford (facilitated by the invalu-

able help of Lecturing Knight Kyle Walters. Tom

DeAngelis and the Lakewood Blue Claws fur-

nished season tickets along with numerous sou-

venirs to be awarded.

No undertaking as successful as this

could be accomplished without the assistance of

many capable volunteers including: Janice

Knorr, Les Hill, Honky, Bob Scott, Dawn Torto-

riello, Bob Kierstead, Tim Haley, The Watters

Family, Van Der Noots, and the perennial hard

working, Georgiana Walsh.

This year’s Four Star BBQ was provided

by Chef Kelli of Prime Grill. Many praises were

leaped upon her burgers, dogs, chicken, Jersey

corn and tomatoes, topped off by her, made

with love, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies!

To Bottom Line it, this year’s Memorial

Open garnered over $1,500.00! This could not

have been done without the golfers themselves.

The Committee wishes to extend to these truly

Best People On Earth our humble and heartfelt

expression of gratitude.

The winners, according to ER Scot,

were as follows:

Closest To The Pin: Ellen Miller & Jim Cusick

Longest Drive: Jan Picarell & Tim Phillips

House Committee News by Tim Haley

Thanks to Loyal Knight, Cliff Van Nest, the Point Elks “Wall of Remembrance” located outside the trophy room, has been updated for the first time in 8 years. 30 members of the Elks Lacey Lodge visited our Lodge July 9th on the last leg of their “pub crawl.” Prime Grill provided the food and a 50/50 was run which raised $135.00! Thanks to Ron Panuska and Bob Scott for painting the garage. Thanks to Gus Schipani and “Hockey” for removing the dead tree limb hanging over our parking lot. Members: If you would like to borrow any Lodge items, please fill out a form first. The forms are on the table in the grill room. Just fill one out and give it to the bartender. Quite a few long tables are missing from upstairs, so if you borrowed any please return them. Please contact me if you have any questions, 848-448-8518.

ELK OF THE MONTH by Scot L. Famous, ER

Jan Picarell

August 2011 Elk of the Month is Jan Picarell. Jan has taken the Scholarship Committee to a new level. Jan ran a fun and successful Triple Crown Fundraiser that made over $1,500.00 for our Scholarship Fund! She helped run a Pot-O-Gold during the Haskell that went to the Special Needs Children’s Committee and is run-ning another P.O.G. during the Travelers this month. Jan has been a huge help for all of the Golf outings for the past 4 years. She also brings in at least 10 spon-sors per outing! And, Jan is always available to pinch hit for an Officer who cannot make a Lodge meeting! Thank you, Jan, for all your hard work and unselfish commitment and dedication…..You Rock!!!!

Veteran’s Committee by Nancy DeVito

Our first fishing trip of the year, June 21, was

enjoyed by Veterans from Joint Base McGuire and the

Veterans clinic. I’d like to thank Ed from US Subs for

was enjoyed by all on the trip. You’re the best!

help is very much appreciated. July 19th will be our

Tim McGrath Fundraiser by Colleen Castronova

My younger brother, Tim was diagnosed with cancer a little over a year ago. On August 13 … 7 to 11 pm … I will be holding a benefit for him upstairs at the Lodge. Until you have a friend or family member with this awful disease, you cannot begin to imagine the total upheaval of life as you knew it. The magnitude of medical bills...along with the emo-tional strain on the entire family is overwhelming. With this event, in his honor, I just pray to al-leviate even a little of their daily stress and financial woes. Entertainment for the evening will be supplied by Outside the Box. They have “changed” a little since the last time some of you saw them at one of our Lodge events. I’m not even going to wager a guess how long ago it was...but they are all grown up now. They are currently the house band for The Stone Pony in Asbury Park and also have a new CD available. On top of being awesome musicians, they are also a great group of guys!! The donation at the door will be $20.00, cash or checks made payable to Friends of Tim. I am currently working on putting together a gift auction for the night and donations will gratefully be accepted!! Please call me at 732-241-0769 at any time. Prime Grill Catering will be preparing food for purchase and a cash bar will be available. I thank the Lodge for allowing me this space in the Antler to invite all of my friends to attend his benefit and hope to see you there! If you are unable to attend, but wish to make a donation...checks made payable to Friends of Tim can be mailed c/o Colleen Castronova, 1207 Benedict St., Point Pleasant, NJ, 08742. My family and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts! “Time is shortening. But every day that I challeng e this cancer and survive is a victory for me.” Ingrid Bergman

Special Needs Children’s Committee News by Tommy Watters, Jr.

On July 11th the SNCC along with many other committees, took the district bus trip to the Miracle on the Moun-tain, A.K.A. Elks Camp Moore. This trip is a yearly event that SNCC take to volunteer by cooking and serving food to the kids. You can also take a tour of the Camp. This place is beautiful in 2 ways! Way 1 is the nature and scenery. Way 2 is seeing all these kids having the time of their lives! While you are there, most people just stay in the dining hall. However, I would recommend the activity room. It’s not only the coolest place there (when I say cool, I mean it’s air conditioned) but it also has a bunch of games you can play or you could just sit back, relax and just watch the kids play in the pool. After all the kids ate, they gave us a typical Camp Moore thank you, they cheered. Plus, the kids were treated to balloon animals and other stuff from the one and only, Antsy the Clown! On July 16th the SNCC participated in “Day At The Bay.” This yearly event takes place in Seaside Heights. It’s mostly for older people with special needs. Our SNCC sets up a giant tic-tac-toe board which the attendees play by throwing bean bags into the holes. And, of course, they win a prize!! I lay underneath the board and retrieve the bean bags. Shop-Rite donates tons of food and a band provides musical entertainment. It’s a fun day for every-body!

Shuffleboard News by Dave McWilliam

Our snow shortened 2010-2011 Thursday night shuffleboard league ended in June with Gus Schi-pani having 6 hangers to repeat as the men’s Champion. Jack Cimino, as usual, had a strong showing to fin-ish 2nd with 5 hangers. Our newest member, Joe Auriemma tied with our oldest member, Gus (Godfather) Adamo, for 3rd place with 4 each. The Ladies championship ended in a tie with Barbara Smith and Camille Cimino having 4 hangers each. 2nd place went to last year’s champ, Margie McGhee. 3rd place was a tie including most of the other women. However, there were 4 players who did not have any hangers this year. This group, known as the “Fab 4,” had the unique ability to have each of their weights for the entire year, either totally go off the board or remain fully on the board, without precariously hanging off the end of the board. Obviously, a skillful task. To avoid their being chased around the Lodge for autographs, we will not disclose their names in this article. Suffice it to say that one of the women in this group has the same first name as the star of the “Wizard of Oz” and her partner has the same first name as the “Chicago Bulls Jordan.” One of the other two, has the same first name as the famous frontier man “Crockett” and the last is the opposite of a cloudy day. It’s up to you to guess. The new season kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 8, after grueling summer practice sessions each Thurs-day in July and August. No Lock-Outs or hold outs for this group!
