Now, that's going too far ... ! Areyou aware that there are 70 things you shouldknow about the concert by the Three Tenorsthat was held this past summer at DodgerStadium? Well, if you know someone at WarnerMusic Canada, get them to send you the list,it's pretty awesome, and listing the 70 thingshere would take us into next week. Here's acouple to whet your appetite. It took 75 trucksto transport the steel and lumber needed tobuild the stage. It took more than 600technicians and craftsmen, working aroundthe clock for six days to transform the stadiuminto a neo-classical amphitheatre. Two 48 -foot high waterfalls, one on either side of thestage, used 30,000 gallons of recycled water. For those interested in food, there were an

estimated 10,000 sandwich plates, 26,000croissants, 20,000 fruit salads, 10,000 pastadishes, 15,000 chocolate strawberries and12,000 gallons of cream, all washed downby 15,000 bottles of water and 40,000 softdrinks. (EC: And that was just for the threetenors . . .
A week to remember ... ! Canadiancountry music is getting another big boost thisweek as the industry comes together in Calgaryfor Canadian Country Music Week '94 and theCCMA awards presentation. Country musicin general has never looked or sounded betterand Canada's country star system is shiningbrighter than ever. CTV is experimentingwith a Monday night showing, which could bea good move. This year's show could attractclose to 2 million viewers. (EC: Can I quoteyou . . .
A perfect world . . . ? Wouldn't it benice if all our Canadian recording artists livedin Canada, performed Canadian copyrightsand recorded in Canadian studios? What awonderful world that would be. But, we'vegot a problem in this country, a BIG problem. It's called attitude. We've got attitude fromthe studio people, attitude from radioprogrammers, attitude from the majors, andattitude from the media. Much of it is
condescending and downright demoralizing. The larger studios are geared to the big -buckpaying jingle/commercial business. Recordingacts, unless backed by a go -for -broke budgetfrom a major label, are discouraged to use thefacility, unless it's after midnight. (EC: Theycan't even spell Cancon . . . !)
Another attitude . . . Now, whywould anyone move to the US, in particularNashville? The people in the industry therehave an attitude too, but what a great attitude. They're on all the time. They live, breathe andpromote country music 24 -hours a day. TheirPR is warm and genuine. So what's not to likeabout Nashville? If an artist is signed to amajor Nashville label, doesn't it make sense tolive near by so as to take advantage of all thepromotional activity that can be generated tobreak that artist into the market? If there arejobs available in the industry in Nashville, isn't it better to feel useful there, than beingfinancially -strapped and unsure of the futureback home in Canada? Let's not be too quickto condemn the victims of our attitude problem. We'll just have to put up with a world that isn'tas perfect as we wanted it to be. (EC: It'sspelled Cancon . . .
Just 15 minutes ... ! There's this townin Canada called Smalltown, and they recentlyannounced they were starting their own awardsceremony to be held each year. They'll beknown as The Smalltown Annual MusicAwards. The New Smalltown Academy ofMusical and Recordings Arts & Sciences willannounce the nominees any day now. To tie inwith the awards, there will also be a conferencefeaturing speakers from the industry. Twodays later, another group announced that theywould be having their own seminars, a fewmonths later. Now, none of this should besurprising to Canadians, except for one thing.Smalltown has a population of 372 people and
only three people who record, all of whom doit at home on a small cassette recorder.(EC: This all goes to prove that Andy Warholwas right when he said everybody in Canadawill either win an award or be on a panelfor 15 minutes . . . at least once in theirlifetime . . . !) Now, I can tell you that noneof this is true. I was just kidding. (EC: Yousure had me convinced . . . !) Can you spellpenis envy???
A note from down under ... DaveCharles, now doing his hip -hop routine inAustralia, sent along a note and a tear sheetfrom Melbourne's Sunday Herald Sun. Underthe headline of "Mmmm - a Canadianinvasion", writer Paul Stewart devotes spaceto the increasing popularity of Crash TestDummies and Junkhouse. The Dummies'release sustained Top 5 ranking for the pastmonth, and it looks like Junkhouse is in linefor a major push from Sony Music Australia.Charles pays particular compliments to "theBMG promotion team worldwide, andespecially the work of Bob Jamieson and JimCampbell with Larry MacRae, who havespearheaded the success of the Crash TestDummies." Charles also credits Rick Camilleri"for establishing Junkhouse as a world classact." (EC: It's nice to have friends in farawayplaces . . . !)
A dull convention . . . ? Seen on thetrack of a well-known resort town, a lady ofthe night wearing a team jacket from a majorlabel. (EC: They used to trade 8 -tracks forfavours . . . !)
Mr. S is on the spot . I A three-ringcircus is coming to that town that borders twocultures. There's lots of bucks at stake, so thecircus manager doesn't mind spending, spending and spending some more. If all goeswell, the empire will expand and the emperorwon't have to worry about parading his newduds. (EC: Without a shot being heard . . . !)

CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK '94 Page 9
Michelle is Wright on withby Ron RogersFew Canadian country artists can boast thetalent and the success that Michelle Wrighthas enjoyed in her recent tenure at the top ofthe country music scene.
In the two years since the release of hermulti -platinum selling Arista album Now AndThen, Wright has ascended to the top ofCanadian country music. The albumspawned a fistful of singles, spent sevenstraight weeks at #2 on the RPM CountryAlbums chart (just couldn't top Billy RayCyrus), and garnered her a bounty ofCCMA and Big Country Awards.
In fact, this past March, despite thefact that the album was nearly two yearsold, Wright was once again named topfemale artist at the 1994 Big CountryAwards, a testimony to the fame she hasattained in her career.
Riding high on this new wave ofsuccess, one would have thought thatWright and her backers would have triedto rush out a follow-up album. Butaccording to the Merlin, Ontario native, everything had to be right before thelatest album, The Reasons Why, could bereleased.
"I could not have put a time limit onthis one, nor will Ion the next one. I wentthrough a lot of producers by choice, andall the producers are a strong part of thisrecord. Two years ago, I had a good gripon what I wanted when I put that recordout. But things have changed, my needs havechanged, what I expect from myself haschanged. As a result of all that, it's the bestalbum of my career."
As a self -admitted veteran of the road, the hours and hours spent in the studio is arelatively new thing for Wright. However, she feels the countless hours have paid off, particularly where her vocals are concerned.
"Until you're in thetrenches, how dare
you pass judgement. Thepeople that make thosecomments haven't got aclue. They don't know
what I went through, theydon't know how I beggedfor a record deal here. "
"Since I spent so much time in the studio,I started discovering things about my voicethat I didn't know. A lot of artists, particularlyin Nashville, come up through the studios. ButI never did, and in the time I spent in the studiorecording this album, I discovered thingsabout my voice I never knew I could do."
Choosing among the myriad of songsavailable to her was no easy feat. An artist likeWright receives hundreds of possibilities, which have to be whittled down to a select fewthat appear on the album. She's the first toadmit that many songs she has passed on havebecome hits for others.
"I've passed on hit records on a regular
The Reasons Whybasis. My first album had a song called MaybeIt Was Memphis that was a huge hit for PamTillis. I was a Canadian, what do you meanMaybe It Was Memphis, I'd never even beento Memphis.
"But I don't mind that I passed on thosethings, because that's how I go through them,by my instinct and my feelings and what I've
been through. I have to live with these 10songs for the rest of my life."
Wright recently began building a housein the Nashville suburb of Franklin, Tennessee.Like other influential Canadian artists whohave made the move southward (David Fosterfor example), Wright has received a lot ofcriticism for what many deem her lack ofloyalty to her native land. But, in her mind, she was simply following those who gave hercareer life in the first place.
"I never thought twice about it. It'sfabulous, it's absolutely where I want to be. Iam your typical story of a Canadian who said,`please give me a record deal' . My record dealcame from Nashville/New York, and I thought,`my god, these people believe in me'. Icontinue to feel loyal, and I continue tochampion Canada wherever I am.
"I worked my first American albumexclusively from Canada. I was makingconference calls from Canada on my futureand my career and I didn't feel good aboutthat. How could I develop a relationship witha record company that's investing hundreds ofthousands of dollars in me, across the phonelines. So I packed my bags and moved in aminute and I don't regret it a bit."
Wright knows that she is going to takeflak for her decision to move, as she hasalready. But she believes those that hurl slingsand arrows are those who've never beenthrough the wars like she has.
"Until you're in the trenches, how dareyou pass judgement. The people that makethose comments haven't got a clue. They don'tknow what I went through, they don't know
how I begged for a record deal here. I'd be onstage playing a song from my Canadian albumand someone would yell play some damnDwight Yoakam. So those people that makethose kind of comments, I laugh about it,because they just don't know what it's like."
While Canadian country music continuesto grow in leaps and bounds, with fresh, newtalent rising to the surface seemingly day byday, Canadian country continues to proceed
with simple hops and skips at retail. Forsome reason, country music in Canada isjust not a consistently huge seller, andWright thinks she knows why.
"I would suggest that it might bebecause we're still trying to break downthe stereotype. I don't like showing up ata television show or awards show andseeing hay bails on the stage. That's notme. I do think cowboy boots and hatsand traditional artists must remain. We've only been popular in themainstream for three or four years now,and boy have we ever accomplished alot."
One would think that country wouldbe selling through the roof nowadays, with its increased profile both at radioand television. That brings to mind animportant question. Is new countrymusic better than its predecessor, orsimply more popular? Wright seems tofeel the doors in country music haveopened up just a little bit wider.
"I would say that the quality of recordsis better. Production qualities have
changed tremendously. But to suggest that thesongs are any better or the artists are any better- I think it's just different. I think countrymusic is opening up its mind, we're not beingas limited as maybe it was at one time."
If country music has changed so much inso little time, how has Michelle Wrightchanged?
"I think I'm stronger than I've ever been.I think I'm more secure than I used to be. Butif you ask anyone who has known me for a longtime, I'm the same person. I still have myCanadian guys in my band who've been withme for seven years. But I'm not afraid to placemy opinion, I'm not afraid of criticism like Iwas at one time. I don't take anybody's crapanymore. And I'm a better artist than I've everbeen."
One would think that, between promotingand touring in support of her new album, andbuilding her new house, that Wright would bebusy enough. However, she admits that she'sabout to tackle an entirely new ambition.
"I'm pursuing an acting career. It's themost exciting thing in the whole world. Agentleman I signed a production deal with inCalifornia saw me on television and contactedus in Nashville. His credentials are unlimitedand this is a big whoop. An acting careerseems like a cliche thing for all of us to say,but I would suggest it's just a natural extensionof what we do."
With CCMA nominations for both femalevocalist of the year and the Bud Country Fan'sChoice Award, Wright is bound to be animportant presence at this year's awards.

Charlie Major has definitely reached The Other Sideby Ron RogersWhen we got in touch with Charlie Majorrecently, he'd just returned to his home in theOttawa Valley after an extensive tour of theUS with chart -topping country sensation AlanJackson. For Major, the world was stillspinning slightly, with his home stillfeeling just a bit like a hotel room.
"I've actually been home for thelast six or seven days, and that's the firsttime I've been home for that amount oftime in a while. You get used to being onthe road, actually. I was joking with mykeyboard player the other day that I waslooking around in my house for thecatering. I kept wondering where thedressing room was."
You'll have to pardon Major if heseems a little dazed and confused attimes. It's perfectly understandable, considering the tremendous upheaval inhis life during the past year. To say thatMajor has been an overnight successwould be understating'things. His BMGdebut, The Other Side, has spawned four#1 hits on the RPM 100 Country chart, with the most recent being the title track.
After an impressive sweep at theBig Country Awards in March (Canadiancountry artist, album, male artist, songand composer of the year), one wouldthink that Major is brimming with confidenceheading into the CCMA awards. But, heknows full well the dangers of being toopresumptuous when it comes to awards.
"Well, you never count your chickens,as they say. I mean I'm nominated for a lot ofawards, which is flattering in itself, and if Iwin one or two that's great. Whatever's goingto be is going to be. I don't have any greatexpectations for Calgary."
Major admits to feeling "shell shocked, like someone in Vietnam, although this was apleasant kind of shocked", after his great
... you dream of goingto awards shows, walking
away with everything, dreaming about your album
being a big seller ... "night at Big Country. As he says, when ithappens, it's something you can't really get ahandle on.
"You sit around for years trying to getbetter at what you do, writing songs, playingin the bars. You dream of going to awardsshows, walking away with everything, dreaming about your album being a big sellerand everyone wanting to see you in concert.
"When it really happens, it's odd, becauseyou've had all this time to think about it, butas it happens, there's almost a certain unrealityto it."
Major is the first to admit, like so manyartists, that winning awards and selling -outconcerts isn't the prime reason he makesmusic. For him, the music and the songs willalways take precedence, regardless of anysuccess he may have.
"When we made the album, I certainlythought it was a good album, I thought at thetime it was the best album I could have made.I'm thrilled that a lot of people are enjoying it,because that was the whole aim of doing it.
"Obviously, I have to make a living atthis, and if 50,000 people wanted my album at
cost, it would be great. If I didn't make anymoney at it, it would be just as thrilling.Playing for people and writing songs forpeople, that's the biggest reward of all."
Despite being a much sought-after writerfor years, it took Major a considerable lengthof time to finally make The Other Side.Although he did put out an independent albumin 1989, it was another four years before hefinally got back into the studio to make TheOther Side.
"I made a demo back in 1989, which wasto be an album but ended up being a demo. With this album, I think I knew myself fairlywell, I knew my limitations. I just think Iprobably wasn't ready before. I couldn't havemade an album like this 10 years ago.
"I didn't have 10 songs that would havefit together the way these 10 songs do. I hadn'tfigured out what it was that I was best at.There were hints of it. There were some songsI wrote 10 years ago, but I wasn't writing themlike I am now."
One of the things that helped kick startMajor's career was an Ottawa -area talentsearch sponsored by local radio station CKBY.Major says that, in a roundabout fashion, thatcontest led to a song of his being recorded byRicky Van Shelton.
"The prize winning song was a single Iput out called Back In '73, and that song gotme introduced to a fellow named RandallPrescott, and he and I ended up recording thisalbum down in Nashville together in 1989.The song Backroads was on there, and a tapeended up in Ricky Van Shelton's hands and herecorded the song. So in an off -hand way, itdefinitely was a stepping stone."
Like so many Canadian artists who have
attained a modicum of success in the US,Major is likely being pressured by the labelbosses in the US to move south. But, he sternlybelieves that the Ottawa Valley is his home, and he has no plans on moving anywhere, USor otherwise.
"I suppose the pressure's always there, but it's not something I necessarily want to do.I enjoy living here, I love my country. The US
is a nice -enough place, but I'm kind of ahomebody, and I like my hometown. Iwouldn't move to Vancouver, much lessNashville. I suppose if someone put it onthe line and said 'we'll give you a recorddeal if...', ask me then."
And there is no doubt that the pressureis on, because Major is starting to makesome serious waves in the US, thankslargely to his recent touring with AlanJackson. He says that the country fans inthe US have embraced him as much asthose here in Canada.
"We've only got one single out andone video. But we play Backroads in theset, so I guess they know two songs, outof 11 songs that we do. Alan's been goodenough that he gives us 45 minutes toplay. The reaction from the crowds hasreally been great."
Now that he's been able to spend alittle time at home, and with The OtherSide having been out for more than ayear, the talk will soon focus on whenMajor is going to begin work on his nextalbum. For Major, sitting down and
writing songs has never really been consideredwork.
"It's work in the sense that you have todiscipline yourself, and actually sit down andphysically get it done. The labour itself isactually a lot of fun, but sometimes you spend20 minutes looking at one line, wonderingwhere the other 20 lines are.
"Barry Brown and I got together a fewweeks ago, just sitting around his houseshooting the breeze. We haven't sat down andtried to write anything though. We had writtena lot of songs before, and one or two may endup on the next album. It seems as though it'snot a bad combination."
Major has been nominated for five CCMAawards, including the Bud Country Fans'Choice and male vocalist of the year, as wellas single, song and video of the year for I'mGonna Dive You Out Of My Mind.

CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK '94
Jim Witter riding high with 5 CCMA nominationsby Ron Rogers
Hamilton, Ontario native Jim Witter couldn'tbe more surprised with the success of his self -titled debut album, which has spawned fourTop 10 singles, and his acceptance in theCanadian country music industry. RPM had achance to speak with the personable 29 year -old rising star just before Country MusicWeek.
In the last year, the Jim Witterrelease has garnered 11 major Canadiancountry music award nominations. 1993'sCCMA Awards marked two majornominations for Witter, Male Vocalist ofThe Year and the Vista Rising Star. InMay of 1994 he had four Big CountryAward nomination- Outstanding NewArtist, Male Artist, Country Composerwith co -writer Johnny Douglas forEverything And More and Country Songfor Everything And More. Presently,Witter is nominated for five CCMAAwards for the Monday September 19thshow in Calgary: two Best Videonominations, the SOCAN Song Of TheYear with Johnny Douglas for EverythingAnd More, Single of the Year for StolenMoments and Male Vocalist.
Witter is ecstatic with all of theattention his debut is getting, "I wouldhave to say that nominations mean a greatdeal to me simply because they're fromeverybody associated with the country musicbusiness, and I guess that says I'm doingalright." It's obvious Witter holds his awardnominations in high regard, but did confess "itfelt darn good walking on stage to accept myBig Country award for Outstanding New Artistin May."
The last few months have been hectic forWitter as he has been touring across thecountry, with a particular focus on the westernprovinces. He is looking forward to going to
Calgary to schmooze, play at a showcase onthe Friday night, and wait for Monday toperform on the telecast and see how he fairsagainst his stiff competition. "If I come homefrom the CCMA awards with not one award,I'll be as happy as I am right now. I know thatfive nominations is a major score and I'mhappy with that alone."
When questioned about an inside secretor a special niche with music videos, to havenominations for two video awards in one year,Witter laughs, "I have to say we have a lot offun with our videos and I like to add anelement of humour, like the Distant Drumvideo, where we're looking for the proverbialgig that we just can't find. That's funny, butit's pretty much the norm when you're on theroad. A lot of the time, even at the stage I'mat right now in my career, I find myself alwayslooking." He also feels his down-to-earth

personality and the reality of his lyrics generatea lot of radio and video attention. "Most of mysongs are about my life, people can relateeasily to them."
He has a tremendous amount ofadmiration for the entire country music industryand particularly programmers and disc jockeys."I've had four top ten singles off my firstalbum, I was praying to have just one top 20when I initially released it. I feel very, very
lucky but also feel a great deal of gratitudetowards people in radio for playing mysongs and I don't think I get the chance tothank them enough for all the supportthey've given me."Witter has plans on collaborating with afew notable writers for his next albumincluding Johnny Douglas who helpedWitter with some of the tracks on his firstrelease. One writer he mentioned wasparticularly interesting. That was JoelFeeney. Joel and Jim performed a duet atthe Variety Club salute to Big CountryLuncheon in May. They sounded terrifictogether so I asked the obvious question.Perhaps a recorded duet? "That's verypossible. You never know . . . that wouldbe kind of neat . . . maybe sometimedown the road. I'd love to do somethingwith him, he's a great guy."It's hard to say if Witter will bring homeany trophies from Calgary this year, butwith the success of his debut and plans forWitter number two in the books, he'll be
a focal part of many more awards shows inyears to come.

. . . about this year's nomineesWith the consistent rise of country music popularity in Canada, comesa bevy of new and veteran country artists that are finally cashing in ontheir long and hard-working journey. Although a nomination isn'tquite as gratifying as an actual award, industry recognition reflectssuccess, which in itself is its own reward.
This year's Canadian Country Music Award nominees havecertainly earned the attention their respective nominations will garner. The following is a brief summary on the various nominees for theCTV-televised September 19th awards show in Calgary.
THE RANKIN FAMILYThe Rankin Family is a unique band that hasexperience a great deal of cross -format success. The Rankins swept the 1994 Juno Awards,
winning four awards including Canadianentertainer and country group or duo.
The band, signed to EMI Music Canada,is up for three awards: Bud Country Fans'Choice, Vocal Duo Or Group, and Top SellingAlbum for North Country.
The Rankins, a group of five siblings, hail from Mabou, Cape Breton. They can becredited with spurring the rise of cross -formatted music, as their music melds elementsof country, pop, and traditional Celticelements. The Rankin's live shows areconsistently well -attended, and the music thegroup plays has always been a critical favourite.
JOAN KENNEDYFrom her days singing in the church choir inher hometown of Douglas Harbour, New
Brunswick, Joan Kennedy has alwaysepitomized the true country artist. She knowswhere she comes from, and has never lostsight of her rural roots.
With her latest release, Higher Ground,Kennedy has come full circle, attaining successboth in Canada and the US with songs thattouch her audience as much as they do Kennedyherself. The result is nominations for FemaleVocalist and Video for Talk To My Heart.
Higher Ground is Kennedy's fifth album, and undoubtedly her most successful. Producedby Michael 'Pepe' Francis (who is nominatedfor Record Producer Of Year), the recordfeatures 11 truly country tracks, chosen fromthe 1,000 or so songs submitted to her bywriters across North America.
SUSAN AGLUKARKIt would be easy to label Aglukark as a symbolof the growing awareness of aboriginal music, but this artist shouldn't be restrained by anytype of label or symbol. Aglukark's music isdefinitely reaching across all borders, race orotherwise, as evident by her nomination fortop female vocalist at this year's CCMAawards.
Aglukark recorded her Arctic Rose album
back in 1992, releasing it on her AglukarkEntertainment label, eventually selling 15,000copies via the indenpendent route. Ultimately, the album caught the attention ofrepresentatives at EMI Music Canada, whore-released the album in the spring of 1994.
Produced by country veterans RandallPrescott and Chad Irschick, Arctic Rosecontains songs that not only speak of Aglukark'slove for her native Northwest Territories, butalso detail more poignant topics such as childabuse, something Aglukark holds close to herheart.
Co -writing with the likes of Prescott,Barry Brown and Charlie Major, Aglukarkhas fashioned a powerful and pristine albumthat crosses all genres, and should make her astrong contender in Calgary.
ANNE MURRAYMurray is one of the Canadian originals. Sinceher first charted single in 1970 with Bidin' MyTime, which reached #48 on the RPM Country100 chart (followed by the #1 smash hitSnowbird), Murray has charted more than 50
singles on the Country chart, including 37 top10 hits and 21 #1s. Her unparalleled successplaced her at the top of the Canadian MusicHall of Stars, as noted in RPM's 30thAnniversary Edition (Feb. 28, 1994).
Her albums continue to sell well, and herlive shows are consistent sell-outs. This year,Murray's EMI album, Croonin' is nominatedin the Top Selling Album category.
CASSANDRA VASIKA few years ago, Vasik emerged as a uniquetalent in the country music field with her debutrelease Wildflowers. The release brought Vasika Juno in 1992 as top country female vocalist, and instant respect from the Canadian countrycommunity.
Wildflowers marked a culmination of 10years in the music business, beginning withsinging in the local folk choir in her hometownof Blenheim, Ontario. By age 18, she wasfronting a country rock band, and eventuallyenroled in the Music Arts Program at London'sFanshawe College.
From dimly lit honky-tonks to the bright lights of center stage, congratulations to all the Canadian Country Music Association nominees.

Vasik caught her big break when shehooked up with the songwriting team of TimThorney and Erica Ehm. Vasik found 12 songstailor-made for her, resulting in theWildflowers album. Two years later, nowsigned directly with Sony, Vasik releasedFeels Like Home. She is nominated for FemaleVocalist Of The Year.
GEORGE FOXGeorge Fox has been a fixture on the Canadiancountry scene for more than a decade. MustangHeart, Fox's fourth album for Warner Musicis undoubtedly his finest. The proof is in thesales and in the accolades. This year, Fox has
picked up CCMA nominations for MaleVocalist and Single Of The Year for BreakfastAlone.
"This is the record I've been waiting tomake since I got started in the business" saysFox. His patience has obviously paid off. Many of the songs on the record were years inthe making, such as Daughter Of The Rockies, which Fox wrote for a songwriting contest inconjunction with the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
It was in October of '91 that Fox metnoted songwriter Bob Gaudio, who has writtenfor the likes of Frankie Valli and Neil Diamond.Gaudio believed in Fox's songwriting skills, and agreed to help co -write the album. Theresults speak for themselves.
DON NEILSONNeilson first gained prominence in the crowdedcountry scene with his 1992 debut The OtherSide Of You, an album which featured Neilsoncovering songs from the team of Erica Ehmand Tim Thorney.
The native of Noranda, raised in
Montreal, spent many of his formative yearsconvincing his parents of the value of a musiccareer, a tough task considering he grew up ina family of fishermen and miners. Like somany artists, Neilson tried his hand at
everything and anything to keep employedwhile he plied his craft. Ultimately, his talentshone through, resulting in the debut releasewhich garnered him Juno and Big Countrynominations for male vocalist.
Returning in 1994 with Based On A TrueStory, Neilson was able to put his own writingstamp on the work, again aided by the award -winning writing team of Ehm and Thorney, with Thorney also handling production chores. The result is a heartfelt collection of songs thatare as adept at touching one's emotions as anycountry songs around.
Although Neilson is still finding hisplace in the Canadian country field, thispowerful sophomore album should keep hisprofile high heading into Calgary, where he'snominated for a CCMA award for top malevocalist.

Nominationsare for Vocal Duo Or Group, Album, Singlefor There You Go, and Barry Brown & RandallPrescott in the SOCAN Song category fortheir penning of There You Go.
RON HYNESOne of country music's finest storytellers,Ron Hynes captured the essence of musicalstorytelling with his debut on EMI MusicCanada, Cryer's Paradise.
It seems ironic that Hynes has beennominated this year as Outstanding New Artist(as well as Album Of The Year), since he hasbeen a part of Canada's country music scenefor decades. Cryer's Paradise, however, isHynes' first release on a major label.
Hynes began his career singing in clubsand coffee housed in the '60s, first in hisnative Newfoundland, and eventually inToronto and Montreal. In the late '70s, Hyneshelped found The Wonderful Grand Band, which married traditional Celtic music withrock n' roll. Hynes has always been asongwriter first, His folk/country standard,Sonny's Dream, a song he wrote in 1976, waseventually recorded by more than 30 artists, including Emmylou Harris.
With Cryer's Paradise, Hynes has movedfrom top songwriter to top recording artist.Although it has taken him 20 years to find hismark, Hynes appears destined to be a fixtureon the Canadian country charts.

BLUE RODEOBlue Rodeo is nostranger to the countryand pop music scenes.During its five -albumcareer, one of Canada'smost popular acts hasgarnered numerousaccolades from acrossthe Canadian musicspectrum.
Blue Rodeo madeits first big splash in1988 with the release ofthe smash hit Try. Thisyear, the group isnominated for TopSelling Album for FiveDays In July.
Blue Rodeo is one of Canada's most persistent success stories, as it combines relentlesstouring with a consistent schedule of strong releases, aided by a very loyal nationwide fan base. Its previous four releases, Outskirts, Diamond Mine, Casino and Lost Together, have allsurpassed platinum, as Five Days In July.
ONE HORSE BLUEOne Horse Blue hasevolved over its 15 -yearhistory into WesternCanada's premiere newcountry vocal group. Aseries of lineup changesduring the years hasresulted in its currentroster as it appears onStarting All OverAgain, the band'sSavannah debut.
The unique featureabout the group is theinterplay between the three vocalists, Michael Shellard, Rocko Vaugeois, and Gord Maxwell.According to Vaugeois, the reason for this is historical, "None of us wants to carry the loadalone. We've matured way beyond that kind of glory trip."
The group experience a great deal of regional success, particularly in Alberta andSaskatchewan. It has won three consecutive BC Country Music Association awards for GroupOf The Year, and is nominated in that category at this year's CCMA awards.
PRAIRIE OYSTERThe release of the album Everybody Knows marked a turning point in the band's career.Although the group has in existence for more than a decade, it was that sixth album whichcatapulted the Toronto sextet to North American -wide stardom.
That album topped platinum in Canada. It also added scores of new fans to the alreadyhighly -vocal legion that has supported the group since its beginnings in the Toronto clubs.
With the latest release, Only One Moon, Prairie Oyster is continuing the path of success
it started with Everybody Knows. The album'sblend of classic country styles and good oldfashioned rockab illy makes it the mostdistinctly Prairie Oyster record to date.
Prairie Oyster's five nominations at thisyear's CCMA awards are second only toCharlie Major's six. The band is up for VocalDuo Or Group, Album, the Bud CountryFans' Choice and Single for Such A LonelyOne. In addition, Russell deCarle is in therunning for the SOCAN award for his penningof that song.
PATRICIA CONROYPatricia Conroy burst onto the evolving countryscene in 1991. Since that time, the culminationof years of hard work on the west coast hasbeen paying off for Conroy as her career hascontinued to skyrocket.
Conroy is nominated for Female Vocalistas well as the SOCAN award for writing BlankPages. The latter is a particularly specialnomination for Conroy as her second album,Bad Day For Trains, contains three Conroycompositions.
That album reached the top 20 of theRPM Country Albums chart. Randall Prescott, nominated for Record Producer Of The Year, was at the helm for this album.
LYNDIA SCOTTLyndia Scott, on Spinner Records, has a nodfor the Vista (Rising Star) award at this year'sCCMA ceremony.
Scott peaked in 1993 with her single Isn'tIt Always Love, written by Karla Bonoff. Sheoriginally hails from Montreal, but now calls
Vancouver home. She placed first in the BCBud Country Talent Search in 1989, and laterthat year took home third prize in the nationalcontest.
Her song The Moon She Knows, co -written with Bill Buckingham, won the CKWXSongwriting Competition. Her Isn't It AlwaysLove album was produced by Buckingham andRandall Prescott, and led to appearances onThe Country Beat and the nationally -syndicatedradio show Today's Country.
CINDY CHURCHThis Alberta native is a veteran of the countryscene in Canada, gaining her first experienceas part of the Chinook Arch Riders, IanTyson's backup band. She later did backingvocals on many of Tyson's "cowboy culture"albums.
As a solo artist, Church first came tonational prominence with the release of ASong For Brent, a fundraising project for 15year -old Calgary rider Brent Berezay, whowas paralyzed in a rodeo accident. The songhelped garner Church the female vocalist ofthe year award at the 1993 Alberta CountryMusic Awards.
Church's debut on the Stony Plain label,Love On The Range, featured some of thestrongest players in the business, including
husband Nathan Tinkham on lead guitar. Thealbum, featuring three Church originals, spawned the hit Rockabilly Heart, whichreached #19 on the RPM 100 Country Trackschart.
Not one to rest on her achievements,Church followed up the work on her ownalbum with the vocal collaboration projectQuartette, which also features Sylvia Tyson,Colleen Peterson and Caitlin Hanford. Thatalbum, released in April of this year, garneredQuartette a CCMA nod for top vocalcollaboration, which Church can put neatlybeside her own nomination for the VistaRising Star Award.
IAN TYSONCountry music Hall of Famer Tyson was ahousehold word in Canada during the mid'60s, when he and Sylvia led the charge intoan entirely new musical form called countryrock, later popularized by The Eagles andPoco.
After retiring to his ranch in the mid -'70s, Tyson found that the creative juices werestill flowing, and he began writing again. Bythe time his third "comeback" album,Cowboyography, was released on the StonyPlain label, Tyson was once again at the

forefront of the Canadian country scene. Ayear later came the album I Outgrew TheWagon, which arrived the same year Ian andSylvia reached the Juno Hall of Fame.
Tyson's latest release, Eighteen InchesOf Rain, saw him return to the roots oftraditional country, travelling down toNashville to record the album with some of thetown's biggest writers and producers. Theresult is an album that reached #9 on the RPMCountry Albums chart, and which garneredTyson CCMA nominations for male vocalistand album of the year.
THE JOHNER BROTHERSIf one needs proof that small-town Canadianartists can make it to the big time, then look nofurther than these natives of tiny little Midale,
Saskatchewan, who released their first albumon their own Sceptre label in February of1993, entitled, appropriately enough, MyBrother And Me.
The album, which combines the best ofboth traditional and contemporary country, was recorded in virtually every corner ofNorth America, including Nashville'sMasterfonics, Edmonton's The Robin's Nest, and Vancouver's Crosstown Studios.
Featuring 10 original songs from BradJohner (with brother Ken popping up with acredit on That's Alright), the album crossedevery border of country, from gentle acousticballads, to truely light hearted bluegrass. Anda then -relative unkown named Lisa Brokopcontributed a vocal accompaniment on thetrack Light In My Life.
With major labels finally beginning topay attention to this talented duo from theprairies, it was only natural that the Johnersgarnered a CCMA nod in the top vocal duo orgroup category at this year's awards in Calgary.

The word quickly spread in Nashville, leading to Twain recording a demo withproducer/songwriter Norro Wilson andMercury Nashville's A&R manager BuddyCannon, the team that produced SammyKershaw's work with Mercury. MICHELLE WRIGHT -CountrylPopNow & ThenArista -18685-NThe Arista signing for this Canadian countrysuperstar is about to pay off with the release ofthis package of superb poplcountryentertainment. Wright has a feel for country souland blues that goes back to the beginning of hercareer. That impeccable delivery and vocalwarmth is more pronounced here than with anyof her previous releases. The song material isexceptional, particularly her current chart single,Take It Like A Man, written by Tony Haselden. The title track from the writing team of Karen
Staley and Gary Harrison and the Chapin Hartfordpenning of A Little More Comfortable also standout. But don't overlook He Would Be Sixteen, written by Jill Colucci, Charlie Black and AustinRoberts. ONE HORSE BLUE -CountryOne Horse BlueSavannah -9844-HThis colourful and energy -bound Vancouver handhas plodded the regional circuit with relativesuccess for more than 15 years. This album, which the band produced with Bill Buckingham, should open the door to a much wider audience.Although each track displays relentless leadvocal urgencies, the band's "big, thick textured"harmonies add a well-balanced powerenhancement that lends structure to theprojection and lyrical content. Starting All OverAgain, taken as the first single, is now bulletingup the charts. Also key is Devil's Train, andBringing Back Your Love. Includes the previouslyreleased singles, The Man Walks Alone, produced
by Bill Henderson, and Colours Of Love. The bandcomprises Gord Maxwell (vocals, bass), LarryPink (keys), Michael Shellard (guitars), and RockoVaugeois (vocals, drums). -WG

The first single, WhatMade You Say That, leans toward the pop sideand could be considered new country.Programmers have picked up on the one already,as it moves onto the RPM Country 100 at #87.This isn't a shy new artist. Twain possesses asoulful vocal edge, bordering on urgency, thatheightens her lyrical message. Once Twain breaks
into the country mainstream, and it may taketwo or three singles, she should emerge as one ofthe bright new artists of the year. Crime Of TheCentury, When He Leaves You and Forget Me aretracks that should be considered as singles.Twain is managed by Mary Bailey of KirklandLake, Ontario, another songwriter/performer whohas experienced chart action on both sides of theborder. But inpretty short order it will be proven that she haspatched into a winning format. We're looking atpop music history big time here. Tysonhas that vocal charm and witty lyric interpretationthat keeps the listener on edge. It's too easy to
say this is Tyson's best album, although it couldeasily be. He's linked up with some pretty hotwriter: Hagood Hardy for Big Horns, Torn Russellfor Heartaches Are Stealin', Pat Alger for thetitle track, Paul Zarzski for Rodeo Road, BaxterBlack for Chasin' The Moon, and Gene Nelson forNobody Thought It Would, all of which are key.As a solo writer, Tyson hasn't lost any groundthere either, best displayed an Horsethief Moon,Old House, and the first single, Alcohol In TheBloodstream. the group has come up with that coveted soundthe band's US handlers have been looking for.The upfront vocals, and harmony and dynamicprojection carries that Oyster musical signature. Not that the band has changed its roots tact, butthere's a freshness with this production thatsomehow eluded the previous release. The onlycomplaint is that it took so long for this follow-up. There's a hit of a diversion here in thematerial as well. Bandmember Keith Glass wrotefour of the 12 tracks and one, Your Turn To Cry,with Radney Foster. Joan Besen wrote one track,Brand New Hard Time Blues and another, BlackEyed Susan, with Ron Hynes, that has hit writtenall over it. Russell deCarle wrote the first single,Such A Lonely One, which was an immediate hit.All the above tracks are key, but there are three
tracks, wholly produced in Canada, that spotlightthe writing talent of Nashville writers: AncientHistory, written by Bob DiPiero and John ScottSherrill; She Don't Get The Blues, from the pensof Alan Jackson and Jim McBride; and the Pam

SUSAN AGLUKARK -Folk1CountryArctic RoseEMI.28605-FOver the last couple of years, roots music in thiscountry has overtaken the airwaves, to the pointwhere record companies have been stumblingover one another in their haste to sing the nextRankin Family or Kashtin. The latest find in theaboriginal vein is this 27 year -old singer/songwriter from the Northwest Territoriescommunity of Arivat. Aglukark recorded thisalbum on her own Aglukark Entertainment labelback in '92, and managed sales of 15,000. Two
years later, Aglukark has picked up some heavybacking from EMI, who are doing some seriouspromotion for this artist. And it should pay off, as
Aglukark is a vocalist of rare talent. Thesongwriting here is solid, with Aglukark beingaided in the process by the likes of Charlie Major,Randall Prescott and Barry Brown. But it is hersinging that clearly sets this album apart. Hersoft falsetto takes a good song and makes itexceptional. Highlight tracks include the currenthit, Song Of The Land, the title tracks, Wanderin'Child, and a beautiful version of Amazing Grace.
Produced by two country veterans, RandallPrescott and Chad Irschick.

Rising star Jason McCoy gaining industry attentionby Ron RogersThe country scene is filling up like bucketunder a leaky roof, with new artists drippingonto the charts seemingly every day. To findone rare jewel among so much rough is adaunting task for radio programmers, but theyshould all take a pause in their day to listen toJason McCoy.
Country music abounds with stories ofartists who were, as the cliche goes, born witha six -string in their hands. But for McCoy,that cliche is surprisingly close to the truth.
Raised in the small town of Minesing,Ontario (just outside of Barrie), McCoy pickedup his father's old guitar when still a child, and quickly showed Dad his desire to playmusic.
"My dad had an old Stella, which is anold Sears thing. It only had three strings on it,it was a small guitar, and he said if I couldlearn a song, he'd buy a new set of strings. SoI learned this old Barbra Mandrell song calledDarlin', I'm Feelin' Pretty Lonesome, and hebought a new set of strings for me. He wasn'ta guitar player by any means, but he showedme what he knew and I just expanded on that."
Like many artists in the genre, McCoyfell into a love for country music because ofhis parents, and never really desired to play orhear anything else.
"When I was younger, I lived in Albertafor a while, really in the middle of nowhere,so the only music I got exposed to was the stuffmy parents were in to, which was country. When I moved to Ontario, I was still young, and country just continued with me.
"I really got into Merle Haggard, GeorgeJones, that kind of more traditional country. Then I went on the road playing guitar forother people, and I got exposed to moresouthern rock, Lynryd Skynyrd, The Eagles, that sort of thing. And that helped create mystyle as it is now. I find a lot of rock guys arenow discovering country, and I just went theother way."
As his skills on the guitar matured,McCoy naturally tried his hand at writingsongs. At the tender age of 12 he wrote his firstditty, entitled Greatest Times Of All, whichhe says was "the first thing of any substance."He says it was his songwriting that eventuallygot him his first studio work, a demo project

recorded in Nashville. Although the effortdidn't amount to much in terms of nationalexposure, it did serve as a profound learningexperience.
"When I was 17 I did an independentalbum in Nashville. I tried promoting thatacross Canada, and tried some different things. It didn't really fly though, there wasn't anygreat results. But it taught me a lot, and I wentback to school for a year and took someaccounting."
Travelling down to Nashville for arecording session isn't something mostteenagers do every day. So needless to say,McCoy found the entire experience somewhatdaunting, although he agrees that the family -type atmosphere in Nashville helped makehim feel at ease.
"Country music, eventhough it's becoming
more like rock, willalways be a longevityoriented business ..."
"It was scary, but at the same time you'reso excited about going and doing some workon your own that you kind of forget all that. You are intimidated when you go in, buteveryone down there is so down-to-earth andso nice to you, they really make you feel athome."
For any new artist, attempting to promoteyour own material via live shows can be ahumbling experience. Even the most successfulartists around have stories about being booedand hissed up while attempting to play originalsongs. McCoy says that finding the right mixin his live shows of popular favourites and hisown material can be a delicate balancing act.
"When I was touring for the first timewith my own band for my independent album,
there wasn't a whole lot happening in newcountry. We did then, as we do now, a lot ofold country, although we had to beef it up alittle bit.
"But doing originals was hard, peoplewouldn't take to them right away, and for themost part they just wanted to hear top 40 stuff.Which even today remains a problem. Weplay a lot of clubs and it's still a balancinggame."
In early 1994, McCoy headed back downto Nashville to record a four -track demo withproducer Scott Baggett (Billy Joe Shaver), andthe four songs will make it to radio as part ofMCA's country compilations. The first singlefrom that deal, Your Mama Warned You`Bout Me, reached #36 on the RPM 100Country chart (RPM - Aug.1/94).
While McCoy is making small inroadsinto radio through his deal with MCA, headmits that with the mass infusion of newartists into the field, the door at country radiois a tough one to break down. But as he says, determination and talent can often carve a paththrough the crowded waters.
"Country music, even though it'sbecoming more like rock, will always be alongevity oriented business, whereperserverance will always shine through. It ishard to get that share. But we've got a goodteam. I think everything's coming together."
That team, led by manager Ron Kitchenerof RGK Entertainment Group, will be inCalgary for Country Music Week, with McCoyplaying a showcase on the 16th. His music haschanged considerably from the ditties he wroteas a teenager, thanks in part to lessons learnedfrom the road.
"When I was younger, I wrote a lot ofthings based on what I thought country was, from what I'd heard on the radio. Then I wenton the road, played with other people, andstarted to live a bit. I'm starting to write moreof what I've learned over the past few years."

PETER GABRIEL -RockSecret World LiveGeffen -24722-JWhen most artists release the requisite livealbum, it generally is comprised of a sort -ofgreatest hits package, recorded in a live setting. In the past few years, artists have been straying
from that proverbial pattern, attempting insteadto put a new twist on a familiar theme. One suchartist was Depeche Mode, who released acompletely live version of their studio album,Songs Of Faith And Devotion. Now, one of themost influential and innovative artists of ourtime has taken a similar path, with a live albummade up almost entirely of songs from his lateststudio release, Us. Conveying the power of a live
performance is usually an impossible task, andwhen you're speaking of one of the best liveperformers there is, that task becomes doublydifficult. But this two -CD package does a goodjob in portraying the awe and emotion that areinvolved in a Gabriel live show. From his firstopening pleads, "Won't you please, talk to me",Gabriel is in fine voice, aided by a talented adiverse backup band featuring longtimecollaborator and guitarist David Rhodes, bassistTony Levin, drummer Manu Katche andkeyboardist Jean Claude Naimro. Also throwninto the mix are sixties sitar master Shankar onviolin, Levon Minassian on doudouk, and Imagorecording artist Paula Cole on backing vocals. The show, recorded over two days last Novemberin Modena, Italy, features seven tracks from theUs album, four from the enormous So album, theclassic Solsbury Hill, Shaking The Tree and AcrossThe River, a track previously unavailable. This isa fabulous snapshot of one of the great liveartists at his peak. -RR
THE LION KING SOUNDTRACKVarious ArtistsWalt Disney Records -60858Movie soundtracks have become a monsteravenue of revenue for the major labels over thelast year or two. The enormous internationalsuccess of The Bodyguard seemed to kick thingsoff, and was immediately followed by the likes of
Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers, Wayne'sWorld and Philadelphia, all of which have hadserious chart success and spawned numerous hitsingles. The folks at Walt Disney have alwayshad a keen ear for music, with many of the songs
from classic Disney films becoming perennialstandards in pop music circles. With the recentrefocusing on animated features, led by TheLittle Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin,Disney has managed to regain its position as oneof the most important industry purveyors of both
top quality films, and top quality music. All ofwhich is a roundabout way of saying that thetremendous success enjoyed by The Lion King
-Pop
soundtrack thus far was, in many ways, aninevitability. Disney has tapped into a can't -missformula, packaging brilliant animated film withcatchy heart -grabbing pop, and the results havereally spoken for themselves. The Lion KingSoundtrack featured the inspired teaming ofGrammy, Oscar and Tony award -winning lyricistTim Rice, with pop superstar Elton John, and theresults are, not surprisingly, tremendouslyinfectious. Songs such as Can You Feel The Loveand Circle Of Love would be pop hits informat, but teamed with a successfulfamily feature, and they're /11 hits. Alsoon the soundtrack is Oscar winning film
Hans Zimmer, whose impressive scoringcredentials (Days Of Thunder, Thelma & Louise,Backdraft, A League Of Their Own, and morelsimply add to this already impressive production.Disney has found a fruitful avenue, and itssurprising that others haven't taken a jog downthe same path, to see the fuss is about. -RR

MICHELLE WRIGHTThe Reasons WhyArista -07822 18753-NTo say this is the long-awaited album is anunderstatement, but the waiting was worth it.Wright's vocal approach hasn't changed. It'sstill laced with eloquence and that husky purringdemeanour that characterizes her persona.Several of Sam's, Sunrise and HMV stores arealready listing this release in the Top 10,ironically, during the first week of its release, anexample of Wright's widespread fan base. Theinitial focus track, One Good Man, written bySteve Bogard and Rick Giles is already Top 10 inCanada and moving up the US trade charts.Wright is in the forefront of US country now andcan expect a few criticisms, but not from thisquarter. This is a perfect 10. Wright also displaysher writing talent, penning Where Do We Go FromHere with Jim Colucci and Randy Sharp. That, and The Wall, also from the Bogarailes team,The Old Song And Dance, penned by LayngMartine, Jr. and Kent Robbins, are exceptional. The Bob DiPiero, Steve Seskin and Pam Tilliscomposition of We've Tried Everything Else, couldbe a left -fielder. DAN SEALS
Fired UpWarner Bros -45628-PSeals hasn't exactly set the country musicindustry on fire with his releases, which tend tolean a bit more toward pop. Although with some
programmers looking for that new country sound,Seals can fill the bill adequately. All Fired Up hasbeen taken as the first single, not the strongeston the set. It does however, show Seals uniquecreativity at work. The video for this song, which was written by Dennis Morgan, SteveDavis and Bobby Lee Springfield, he used fourJapanese Elvis impersonators, which has caughton with CMT and TNN. The Jesse Winchesterpenning of Gentleman Of Leisure should beconsidered as a focus track, particularly in Canadabecause of its two -parts Cancon property, whichhasn't been duly noted on the writer credits. Alsokey is When, which was written by Robert EllisOrrall and Canadian Gilles Godard, but this doesn'tqualify as Cancon. Seals should make more of animpression with this album, his second for WarnerBros. Don't overlook Still Reelin' (From ThoseRock 'n' Roll Days), co -wrote with Allen Shamblin.

Country programmerslooking for Cancon with bounce, clout andcredibility needn't look any further. Jordan'sgentle approach to country is like a breath offresh air. The purity of her vocals and ability toproject her message is done with a natural flair
for quality control. This is no put-on. This BCartist has a perfected talent with substance thatshould establish her in both the country and ACmarkets. The professionalism of the sessionpeople added to the overall smoothness of the

JON ..A.1)ERSON
JON ANDERSONDeseoWindham Hill -11140-NAs the longtime frontman far '70s progressiverock band Yes, and the various offshoots thereof(ie. Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman And Howe),Anderson would seem to have enough en hisplate to keep him busy 12 months of the year. However, this artist has always strived to findthings new and original musically, as evidencedby his work with longtime collaborator Vangelis. On this new album, Anderson makes a seriousforay into the latin field, and he does so with asurprising amount of confidence. The music hereisn't simply Roundabout or Yours Is No Disgraceput to a samba beat. Anderson has immersedhimself in the culture, with the result being acollection of music worthy of appreciation byany fans of latin music. Anderson's voice hasgained a slightly raw edge to it over the years, and that edge is put to good use, giving the oftenbreezy music an intensity and energy that mightotherwise be lacking. Highlights include theopening track, Amor Real, featuring latin jazzgreat Milton Nascimento, Bridges, with asurprisingly strong vocal turn from actress Maria
Conchita Alonso, and Floresta, a powerful sangin support of the saving of the rain forests. -RR

Unlike some country artists whoblatantly try to bridge the gap into the veryrestricted Gospel market, Damron has a
preacher's confidence that melds beautifully withhis tell -it -on -the -mountain vocal properties.Damron has been embraced by the Gospelindustry, having been voted the 1993 Gospelperformer and entertainer of the year. As well,
his previous Gospel album, Wings Upon TheWind, won the album category of that year. Hisfirst entry into Gospel, Jesus It's Me Again, wonsong of the year honours in 1984. He has beentwice named international artist of the year inEurope and is the recipient of five Texas countrymusic awards, an area of the US that is steepedin Gospel/Christian music.
