VOLUNTEERS! Each time you help with a PDSSN project, facilitate a book club, solicit a donation for the Buddy Walk, help out at a No Limits II dance, attend a BW Planning meeting, visit with a family with a new baby who has Down syndrome, spend time on the phone with a parent….. Well, you get the idea, right? Every time you do something that represents or benefits PDSSN and our families, it would be great if you would log in those minutes or hours! Go to www.pdssn.org/join-us/volunteers-record-your-hours/. When PDSSN applies for grants, these hours are considered “in-kind” currency, and demonstrate that our members are active!

Do you have a shade canopy or a generator we could borrow for the Buddy Walk? If you do, we would really appreciate it! Please click here if you can loan us a canopy or a generator and complete the very short form on our website (only 5 questions). Thank you!

LIFE WITH A SUPERHERO!Editor’s Note: I had the privilege to review this book a few days ago. Ms. Hulings has given us an auto-graphed copy for our Buddy Walk Raffle. It is a treasure of a book! You know how you sometimes read a story and wish you had the gift to write that clearly and with such humor and compassion? That’s the experi-ence of reading this book. It reflects the life that many of you have lived and are still living—and you will love it. If you don’t get it in our raffle, consider buying the hardcover or e-version. You won’t be disappointed — even for a minute! - Chris Kelsey

LIFE WITH A SUPERHERO: Raising Michael Who Has Down Syndrome By Kathryn U. Hulings

This powerful, funny and heartwarming story begins over twenty years ago in a small Israeli town, where a desperate mother told a remarkable lie. She told her friends and family that her newborn child had died. That lie became the catalyst for the unfolding truth of the adoption of that same baby—Michael —who is, in fact, very much alive and now twenty-two years old. He also has Down Syndrome.

When Kathryn Hulings adopted Michael as an infant, she could not have known that he would save her life when she became gravely ill and was left forever physically compromised. Her story delights in how Michael’s life and hers, while both marked by difference and challenge, are forever intertwined in celebration and laughter. With candor and a sense of humor, LIFE WITH A SUPERHERO wraps itself around the raucous joy of Michael’s existence with his four older siblings who play hard and love big; how Kathryn and her husband, Jim, utilize unconventional techniques in raising kids; the romance between Michael and his fian-cée, Casey; the power of dance in Michael's life as an equalizing and enthralling force; the staggering potential and creativity of those who are differently-abled; and the mind-blowing politics of how Kathryn navigated school systems and societal attitudes that at times fought to keep Michael excluded from the lives of kids deemed “normal.”

Kathryn’s compelling, hysterical narrative highlights the rich, colorful story of Michael’s childhood: from showing up in his 7th grade social studies class dressed like Spiderman to calling 911 when his girlfriend breaks his heart. Through it all, LIFE WITH A SUPERHERO shows readers the experience of motherhood in extraordinary circumstances —sometimes with success, some-times with dismal failure — as Michael grows from a baby to an amazing young man.

KATHRYN U. HULINGS is a mother and writer who has called Fort Collins, Colorado, her home for over thirty years. While rais-ing her family of five kids with her husband, Jim, Kathryn worked as an advocate for children with special needs, served as a community volunteer, earned a BA in English from Colorado State University, and subsequently taught 8th grade Language Arts at a local middle school. Kathryn returned to school to get an MA in English/Creative Nonfiction, also from CSU, where she is now an adjunct faculty member teaching composition and literature courses. When not teaching, parenting, or playing with her three dogs, Kathryn can be found writing prose, poetry, essays and screenplays. For more information on Kathryn and LIFE WITH A SUPERHERO, please visit LifeWithASuperHero.com.

“…from the first page, this memoir that reads like a novel brims with characters who sometimes struggle mightily yet in the end perform lionhearted feats almost every day, year after year—from adoptive mom Kathryn Hulings to her husband Jim and their biological kids to inspired teachers of many kinds. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Kathryn Hulings' debut book is a moving portrayal of family and community dedication and love.”— John Calderazzo, Author (RISING FIRE: VOLCANOES, OUR INNER LIVES).

We are now several months in since the establishment of the Piedmont D.A.D.S. (Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome) community group and things are progressing well. The PDSSN D.A.D.S. works in conjunction with the local PDSSN group, but is specifically intended for fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome. The Piedmont D.A.D.S. group currently meets at 6:30 P.M. on the last Tuesday of each month at the Fox and Hound Bar and Grill in the Thruway Shopping Center, 367 Lower Mall Drive, Winston-Salem, NC.

The 3 foundational pillars of D.A.D.S. are Support, Action and Fellowship. We share stories and experi-ences and we brag, learn and grow with other fathers of children with Down syndrome who truly under-stand. We will be inviting speakers to discuss medical, educational, financial, social, and any other issues that affect our children’s lives. We also look forward to planning some great events for the fathers and their families. Attendance has started to increase at our meetings which allow us to have even more relevant discussions about our children. There is a currently a lot of activity and work happening to make the Buddy Walk a huge success and to promote the D.A.D.S group at the event.

Since our D.A.D.S. group is still new and many people do not know we even exist, it is important to spread the word and encourage all people, not just DADS, to like our Facebook page and get familiar with our group. Getting the word out about our group is essential so everyone knows we exist and what we do, es-pecially new families of a special needs child. DADS often have different feelings and ways of dealing with things. It is important that we let new fathers know about our group and what we can offer. We also have a closed group on Facebook now for discussions between members of the D.A.D.S. group. Please visit the PDSSN D.A.D.S. website, http://pdssn.org/programs-3/d-a-d-s/

Don’t forget to us on Facebook to stay current on all the latest happenings. (here is the link to the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DADS.Piedmont) If you’d like more information about our D.A.D.S. group, please contact: Quincy Harvey, D.A.D.S. Director, [email protected] or 336-403-0128 or Scott Duquette, D.A.D.S. Communication, [email protected] or 704-981-1364
