This aircraft is an older model 'Flying Boat.' It doesn’t look as though it has been used lately. Another photo of an A10 Thunderbolt 'Wart-hog' fighter jet. During the first Iraq war in 1991, this aircraft was also known as a 'tank killer.' A laser would 'lock onto' a tank or other enemy vehicle and usually with an under wing missile would obliterate the target.

Mostly all of Sunday afternoon, Ophthalmologist, Dr. Jerry Ross (red hat) had a group of Guards-men surrounding his 1954 Kaiser Manhattan. These young folks most likely, never even heard of a Kaiser, let alone see one in the flesh. Jerry explained to his audience that the Kaiser-Frazier compa-ny started in automobile manufacturing after WWII and went out of business in 1955. However, all the equipment to build Kaisers was shipped to Argentina where the Kaiser was manufactured as the 'Carabela' until 1962 when the stamping dies wore out. Jerry was accompanied by his good friend, Dr. Steven Gandel, son-in-law, Eliezer Medina and grandson Ezra Medina--Buzz Diehl photos

This 2002-2004 'Retro' Ford Thunderbird be-longed to a Guardsman. It was present when we arrive and still present when we departed.

Many A-10 and other aircraft were parked all over the airfield, ready for action. There were also many different types of ordinance on metal carriers that can be towed by service per-sonnel to be loaded onto fighter jets.

a few days away. Flights in the airship would conclude after the scheduled flights on this forthcoming Saturday. I’m thinking to myself, I would love to take a ride on the Goodyear Blimp, but I don’t need new tires. My 1989 Plymouth was barely two years old and the tires had less then 18,000 miles. However, they were black walls and I thought white side-walls would make the car look nicer. I approached the manager and told him what I was thinking. I asked him if I bought the tires for my car could I get white sidewalls? ‘Sure’ he replied, ‘I have them in stock.’ I also told him I really didn’t need new tires because the tires on the car have less than 18k on them. He said when they bring your car in I’ll take a look at your tires. Soon after, they brought the car in and put it on a lift. The manager looked at all four tires briefly and said to me, ‘’I’ll allow you $15 per tire trade in if you buy the new tires today, and I’ll give you a ticket for a ride on the blinp on Saturday! Back in those days, tires were much less ex-pensive than they are today. As I remember, my out-of-pocket cost for the new tires was a little over $100 for new Goodyear whitewalls! They installed the tires and completed the service on my car and I went home. The next day, Friday, I told everyone in the office I was going on a flight on the Goodyear Blimp and waved around the big white ticket I had. Shortly thereafter, the president and owner of the printing company came back to my office and said: ‘Bill, I’ll give you $100 for that tick-et.’ I said: ‘I’m sorry, but this is a chance of a lifetime, and the tickets cannot be transferred, which is printed on the ticket. He wished me good luck and a wonderful flight. On Saturday, the day of the flight, I was up early and out of the house. I drove over to Mar-tin State Airport in Middle River, an area I was

completely unfamiliar with, but I arrived at the Airport in plenty of time. I was directed to go to a special entrance and waiting room. There were a couple people in the room, but it didn’t take long for the room to fill. As I remember, the ‘gondo-la’ as they referred to the passenger cabin held sixteen passengers and two pilots. There wasn’t a bad seat in the gondola. Everyone had a com-pletely unobstructed view in all directions. All the people in the waiting room includ-ing myself were escorted to the flight line. We could see way off in the distance the airship ap-proaching. Soon, it arrived at our position. The captain dropped the nose and tail ropes for use by the ground crew of eight to bring the ship closer to the ground for boarding. The gondola was only a foot or two off the ground when we boarded. I could feel the ‘pitch and roll’ much like a boat on water. Once all the passengers were seated, the pilots explained that this Air-ship is the 'Spirit of Akron' is jet powered and is the first one in Goodyear’s fleet of airships. The pilots further explained we will be cruising at an altitude of 2,500 to 3,000 feet. We will cruise at a ground speed of about 60 mph. After we were well on our way, the pilots addressed the passengers and said you can now move about the cabin. However, the cabin (gondola) was very cramped and movement was not easy. I stood up behind the pilot on the right and gave my small Kodak '110' camera to another pas-senger to take my picture. It turned out very dark and I was not able to use the picture. Sixty-miles-per-hour in an aircraft doesn’t sound like much, but above, in the gondola it looks like we were moving much faster. We cruised out over the Chesapeake Bay, its many inlets and tributaries. I was immediately sur-prised by how many swimming pools I spotted in the residential areas of Middle River. The ship continued cruising further out over

the Bay and we could see pleasure boats on the water’s surface: sail boats, power boats and even a couple yachts. I might have forgotten to mention it was a very pleasant day, warm, with a shifting breeze, there was no threat of rain in the forecast. After being airborne about an hour, we turned back for Martin State Airport. The airship ever so gently began to decrease altitude and by the time we were above the ground crew, the ship was only about 30 feet off the ground, from which the ground crew easily pulled the ship down the rest of the way for passenger unboarding. Everybody was all smiles as we milled about under the airship. We talked to the pilots and gave them our impressions of the flight. I never heard one negative comment from any of the passengers. Except one middle aged lady said: jokingly, ''It would have been great to have a nicely chilled Martini while cruising.'' Every-one laughed. I will never forget my one and only flight on the Goodyear, 'Spirit Of Akron.'

Continued from Page 1, 'Goodyear...'

After a little over an hour cruising around the Middle River and bay area we returned to Martin State Airport. Above, the pilot is guiding the airship with instructions from the ground crew. The qual-ity of the pictures is not up to standards. My Kodak 110 camera yielded prints that were a paltry 3.5 x 4.5 inches, from which these photos were scanned. Back then the 110 was a popular choice, not now.

The President’s MessageFrom Paula Ruby

Fondly, Paula

Hello Chesapeake Members!

Chesapeake Region members were very busy during June. I was one of thirteen Chesapeake Region members who attended the 2019 AACA Grand National in Auburn, Indiana. Ken Ste-venson received his 1st Grand National for 'Henry', his 1947 Ford Convertible, and Gene Sauter represented the 1934 Pierce-Arrow of Charles Gillet, selected to compete for the coveted 2019 AACA Zenith Award. Congratulation to Ken, Gene and Charles. After the Grand National, some of us continued with our travels, on to Michigan and the Detroit area, visiting many other car collections such as Gilmore, Volo and Dearborn Village. Everyone enjoyed their trip but, after so many miles of traveling, were glad to be back home. Another event that occurred in June was our antique car display at the annual Family Day event of the Maryland Air National Guard, at Martin State Airport in Middle River, Maryland. Eight members of Chesapeake Region participated, for a fun day. Buzz Diehl report-ed that there was a very large turnout of Air National Guard families, and the organizers sincerely appreciated having our cars displayed

at their event. Buzz was able to sign up two new members, with possibly another application to be mailed in. If an invitation is extended to us next year, surely more Chesapeake Region members will be eager to participate. Read all about it in the newsletter and check out the many photos on the website. My thanks to Buzz for acting as the Officer of the Day. Don’t put your classic away just yet. This month will be just as busy. July 11 is our annual car show at the Maryland Fire Museum in Lutherville. We always have a great turnout for this event, and I hope that many of our members will be able to attend. This will also be our contribution to 'Collector Car Appre-ciation Day', promoted annually through SEMA. On July 31st a group of 50 Chesapeake Region mem-bers and associates will be traveling to Allentown, Pennsylvania to tour the Nicola Bulgari automobile collection. Unless there is a cancellation, no more participants can be accepted. I was contacted by the Parade Chairman for the Towson 4th of July Parade, inquiring if we would be participating as a group in the parade this year. Since no interest was expressed at the June Membership Meeting, I have notified the parade chairman of our decision to not participate. Individuals, however, interested in participating

in the parade can still do so by just showing up at the established location at the designated time. Several new activities currently being discussed are attendance as a group to some of the local, outdoor, evening concerts in the Hunt Valley and Towson areas. Let me know if this is something that you would like to do. These concerts are usually on Friday and Satur-day evenings. Also, we are looking into a mid-week driving tour to Cambridge, Maryland for lunch at the Suicide Bridge Restaurant. It is a beautiful location on the shore of Cabin Creek. With enough interest, we might also arrange a sternwheel riverboat cruise on the Choptank River. Information about the restaurant is available on their website: suicidebridge.com. If interested, please contact me. Plans are in the works for a revival of our traditional Poker Run event, for our Membership Picnic, and for a trip to the MECUM Collector Car Auction in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We have started a list of people interested in these events, so if you were not at the June Membership Meeting and wish to get on the list for participating, please give me a call. Final pricing for the Poker Run and Membership Picnic will be forth-coming after the Board meets at the end of June. Flyers with details will be prepared, posted on the website, and inserted within our newsletter. At the May Board meeting, we discussed elections for the upcoming year 2020. Everyone presently serving on the Board expressed interest in running for another year, except our Chief Judge: Gene Sauter. Gene has served on the Board for many years and I sincerely appreciate everything Gene has done for our Chesapeake Region. That position will need to be filled for the 2020 year. The position of Chief Judge is primarily responsible for overall management of our Autumn Harvest Collector Car Show, held at the Manchester Fire Company carnival grounds in Manchester, Maryland. With the help of many Club members who handle the paperwork, assem-ble the awards and manage the parking of vehicles, the task is quite easy to perform. The fire company operates the food concession independently, and we thank them with a donation at the end of the event. If desired, we offer space to independent product or service vendors. The position of Chief Judge also entitles you to a vote on the Executive Board. Board meetings are usually held about 2 weeks after the General Membership meeting. Never feel that you must attend every meeting. Remember family ALWAYS comes first. All Board positions are open at this time, so if anyone would like to run for a position, even mine, please give me a call. I hope that everyone noticed in the last newsletter the contest for the recruiting of new memberships. Starting in June, through the meeting in November, anyone who signs up a new 2019 member to National AACA and Chesapeake Region will receive a coupon, for participation in a drawing to select lucky winners to receive FREE tickets to our Membership Banquet. Memberships in National AACA are now so easy to offer. Until October, they are only $20.00, plus there is an AACA Military program that offers 'FREE' first year membership to all active and retired military personnel. With free first-year Chesapeake Region memberships, let’s all get busy and talk to as many people as we can about joining one of the best car clubs on Earth. In closing, I hope to see everyone out and about, attending the many local, summer events. Remember, however, to stay in contact with many of our Chesapeake Region members and associates, unable to do so. They would surely appreciate hearing from you.

with the Stevensons, Ken and wife Sally are scheduled to be in an HBO movie filming in Wash-ington D. C. the weekend of the 15th and 16th of June. The Early Ford V8 Museum appealed to Ken to allow Henry to stay all summer in the museum. Ken, however, explained to the Museum folks that Henry has prior commitments such as appearing in the HBO movie shoot. Ken says Henry is loving all the attention. Congratulations to Ken, Sally and Henry for their First Place win in Auburn!

Above are two Fords and a Mercury with 'flathead motors.' The sporty looking one on the end is a new for 1950 'Crestline.' It’s a custom two-door sedan with vivid paint colors and paint scheme. It also has a Naugahyde roof. Mercury Division offered a similar model. This was done to blunt the sales of the new 1950 Chevrolet Bel Air two-door hardtop, a first in the low price field. Ford got its own two door hardtop, 'Victoria' in 1951, Mercury got a two-door hardtop in 1952. This picture was taken at the Early Ford V8 Foundation Museum in Auburn, Indiana.

After a nearly two year process, Activity Di-rector Phil Hack and his wife Shelly are finally in their new home. ''We started way back in the fall of 2017 when we discovered our dream lot off of Falls Road in Cockeysville.'' Verifying we could actually build on the property, which is in a Forest and Water Conservation area, took until March 2018. After a summer of acquiring neces-sary permits we broke ground October 2018 on the dream garage and home. May 27th, Memorial Day we finally moved in. Overall, the process went very smoothly. I would highly recommend our builder. Now for the good stuff. Anyone familiar with a Corvair Rampside knows that this is a very versatile vehicle. Quirky? Absolutely! Mine qualifies as a nice 'driver.' Since owning it, I’ve used it sparingly and gently for hauling stuff that nothing else can. The bed is 9 feet long. It’s rated at ¾ ton (yes, really). There is simply no other vehicle more convenient for getting big heavy stuff into the back. My Rampside has proven invaluable many times over the years. This last month it really got pressed into service, hauling the snow blow-er, lawn equipment, generator and even our new appliances effortlessly. That side ramp is an engineering marvel. Now for even better stuff. My new lift arrived last Saturday. Installing one of these on your own is not recommended. The gentleman that installed my lift had a crane on his truck and had it all up and operating in about three hours. WOW! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d own one of these. Jack Anderson, Stew Chandler (VCCA) and I chose to raise the '47 Chevy Woodie wagon for the maiden voyage. Everything went up and down without a hitch. Now, I have to get back into the house and hang pictures. Later this year after we finish moving in, Shelly and I plan to host a Cars and Coffee. Hope you come out and join us!

Phil And Shelly Are NowLiving In Their New Home!

The sign to the right is in front of the Early Ford V-8 Foundation Museum in Auburn, Indiana. The sign is very significant in its own rite. It was the sign at the Ford Complex in Dearborn, Michigan, it stood for years in front of the Ford Rotunda Building until a fire de-stroyed the building. The sign was restored by volunteers at the early Ford V-8 Foundation Museum.

In addition to the drag races there was a giant swap meet, car corral and a huge car show of 150 cars. Nick was awarded the giant trophy you see him tenderly clutching in the photo above. More Information On 6/12 Battery In last month’s edition of The Chesapeake Bulletin, I mentioned a product called the '6/12 Automatic Battery.' Member Ken Briers did due diligence and provided the following information: ''What I have learned is Antique Auto Battery (AAB) closed a couple years ago.'' Last year, the business reopened as 'Jim’s Battery Mfg. Co.'; same address and phone number. I have doubts about Jim’s though, because their website doesn’t come up, and the email listed doesn’t work either. A few weeks ago, Jim’s website was 'under construction.' At this time, I can’t even get that. The AAB website comes up, but you can’t order anything there, even though the products are displayed. You only get a response to the 'contact us page'. I filled out the form to send a message, we’ll have to see if they respond. The 800 number does work, and the message refers to Jim’s. I’ll keep you posted. Many thanks Ken!--Bill Wurzell, Editor

Mel Carson, 2019 AACA President, presents Chesapeake Region member, 'TW' Scott with the 'Century' Award for his 1912 Model 35 Brass Era Buick, and attending the 2019 AACA Southeastern Divisional Tour in Wilmington, North Carolina, April 29 to May 1. The tour was hosted by Cape Fear Chapter of North Carolina Region of AACA. It was the first time that 'TW' had the 1912 Buick on a tour. 'TW' added: ''we proudly display our Maryland license plate when we tour around the USA and also in Canada next month.'' We were so lucky to find an original 1912 Maryland License plate in good condition, and the Maryland porcelain plate colors for that year matched the Buick’s factory color!--Bill Wurzell, Editor

Waxing Nostalgic...By Myron Smith, AACA Secretary/Treasurer

I recently read in the newspaper that the NECCO Candy Company is going out of business. NECCO stands for the 'New England Confectionery Co.' They are the makers of the nickel size candy wafers and had been around for 171 years. They also produced the little valentine hearts with the cute sayings printed on them. This got me to thinking about other candies from my childhood that I don’t see anymore. Candies like Walnut Crush, Chuckles and Butter Brickle. Walnut Crush and But-ter Brickle had unique tastes. I know of nothing that tastes like the Walnut Crush. The Butter Brickle is very similar to today’s Heath Bar. Most of this candy came from Grandma and Grandpa. I especially remember 'Chuckles' which were about five little blocks of candy in one wrapper and resembled larger square gum drops. Grandpa would bring them home from work at Goodyear in his lunch box, and since he had false teeth, I knew he couldn’t eat them. This really has no bearing on cars other than I was getting nostalgic about the fun things I enjoyed and took mostly for granted as a child. I remember with fond-ness the ‘Chevrolet Shows’ which would occasionally come to town. Sometimes they would be in the city auditorium and sometimes in a inflatable tent bubble at a shopping center. They were fun and exciting to see the new and special offerings from Chevrolet. The traveling trucks were even special. I recall the Chevrolet semi-tractor even had whitewall tires and full wheel covers. Show day for the new cars, whatever the brand, was always close to being like Christmas. Dealers would cover the windows of the dealership the night before ‘show day’ so no one got a peak of the latest offering until it was show time. I got to thinking about what ‘special’ car things we had for our son, now 28, as he grew up. Gone was the Chevy traveling show and special show day for new cars. Were the swap meets we attended exciting enough as we searched for the next automotive treasure a suitable replacement? Or was there some other ‘special event’ we attended such as tours and AACA meets that we at-tended a replacement for the things in my memory. I don’t know. He has the car bug. The closest thing I can think of right now is the recent phenomenon, called cars and coffee. In our area it is a 8:00 to 12:00 come and show your car at a local auto museum. No trophies, no classes just come and have fun! If you have not participated in one of these, check them out, and if possible take a young person with you. You might just be making a memory for their trip down nostalgia lane when they grow up.--Reprinted from AACA Rummage Box, Fall of 2018.--Bill Wurzell, Editor

While visiting Auburn, Indiana for the 2019 Grand National, Chesa-peake Region President, Paula Ruby visited the Early Ford V8 Museum. They have an authentic Ford Dealership from 'back in the day', complete with sales desks. Paula donned a 'fedora' and was ready to sell some new and used Ford cars and trucks! Unfortunately for Paula the newest car on the showroom floor was a 1953 Ford Customline sedan and no air!

When former Ford Automobile dealer Joe Floyd donated EIGHTEEN, 1936 Ford cars to the Early Ford V8 Museum, the above vehicle was also donated. It is a fully restored 1936 STAINLESS STEEL bodied Ford that was manufactured by Allegheny Ludlum Steel Company, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Both Ford Motor and Allegheny Ludlum benefited greatly from this promotion. Initially, six cars were produced, one was destroyed in an accident, four exist intact and the whereabouts of the 6th car is unknown.--Gary Ruby photos
