What Is Volume? The volume of a solid is the amount of

space inside.Consider the rectangular tank below:

If we were to fill the tank with water, the volume would be the amount of water the tank could hold.

Measuring Volume.

Volume is measured in cubic units .

Here is a cubic inch.

It is a cube which measures 1 inch in all directions.

We will now see how to calculate the volume of various shapes.

Exploration Activity•Group leaders are in charge of keeping your group on task.

•YOU WILL NEED: a worksheet, a container of cubes, and a rectangular object.

DIRECTIONS: You will have 5 minutes with each object. Fill the objects with the cubes and fill out the chart.

At the end of the 5 minutes, put the cubes back in the container and move to the next station.

When you are finished filling out the chart answer the questions. We will discuss these at the end of the period.

Make sure to watch the clock!

FormulasWhen we calculated the volumes we counted the cubes inside:

10cm

3cm

4cm

Shortcut: We found the area. A = length x width

We then calculated how many layers made up the volume. The number of layers is the

HEIGHT of the solid. This gives us a formula for calculating other volumes:Volume= Area of Base x Height

V = Bh

We found the number of cubes that made up the base.
