ALWAYS KEEP A GOOD ATTITUDE
“Meditate On These Things . . .
And The God Of Peace Will Be With You”
(Philippians 4: 8-9)
When you are going through bad times, your goal should be to keep a good
attitude. And with God’s help, you can! Dr. Viktor Frankl, a Nazi Holocaust
camp survivor said: “If a prisoner felt he could no longer endure the realities of
camp life, he found a way out in his mental life – an invaluable opportunity to
dwell in the spiritual domain – this helped him adapt and improved his chances
of survival”. Here is some practical advice on keeping a good attitude in bad
times:
(1) Always believe the best about others, but don’t get bent out of shape when
they disappoint you. Nobody is perfect. Be grateful for the people who bring joy
and endeavor to be counted among them.
(2) When you are tempted to retaliate, judge or become impatient; say to
yourself, “This is an opportunity for me to model a great attitude for the glory of
God”. When you say, “But this person is driving me crazy” – then refuse to be a
passenger and go along with them! Take back the wheel and get into the driver’s
seat of your life – and determine which direction you will go and what attitude
you will have.
THE BIBLE SAYS: “Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble,
whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely,
whatever things are of a good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything
praiseworthy —meditate on these things . . . and the God of peace will be with
you”. (Phil. 4:8-9).

A Farewell – Love Letter to My Church Family
Recently, there have been major changes taking place in my life as a result of
Norfolk Southern (NS) Corporation’s decision to close the NS Office
Building located on Franklin Road here in Roanoke, VA. Each department
was informed that they would relocate either to Norfolk, VA or Atlanta,
GA. My department will be relocating to the Norfolk, VA area. I have been
tentatively scheduled to leave Roanoke the first part of August.
While I know that God has plans for me, plans to prosper me and to give me
continued hope and a future; it is hard to leave a church family that I have
grown to know and love since I was a little girl at the High Street Baptist
Church near Henry Street downtown. I can still remember my mother and
father taking my little brother and me to Sunday School, church, and choir
rehearsals.
I am both excited and sad; peaceful, but nervous at times. Without the
prayers of my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I know the past few months
would have been extremely difficult and for that I say “Thank You from the
bottom of my Heart”.
I will especially miss my dear sisters from the Women’s Ministry and those
who have come alongside this ministry to aid in whatever way they could for
the cause of Christ. I know that our labor has not been in vain and that God
will continue to bless this ministry as well as all the other ministries and
auxiliaries in our church.
I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to serve under the leadership
of our dear Pastor Serenus T. Churn, Jr. and to become acquainted with his
lovely wife, Karen. I know that as Pastor Churn and the members of High
Street Baptist Church work together and rely upon God’s guidance, “All
things are Possible”!!!
May the Lord continue to bless and keep High Street Baptist Church May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to each of you.
May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you ALL His Peace (Paraphrased from Numbers 6:24-26)
Love and Blessings to you All,
Sister Brenda Taylor

AUGUST: National Immunization Awareness Month
How Vaccines Prevent Disease
A vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies, exactly
like it would if you were exposed to the disease. After getting vaccinated,
you develop immunity to that disease, without having to get the disease
first. This is what makes vaccines such powerful medicine. Unlike most
medicines, which treat or cure diseases; vaccines prevent them.
Vaccine Side Effects and Risks
Like any medication, vaccines can cause side effects. Most common side effects are usually mild, such as redness and swelling at
the injection site. These symptoms should go away within a few days. If your child experiences a reaction at the injection site, one
can apply a cool, wet cloth to reduce redness, soreness, and swelling.
Serious side effects following vaccination, such as severe allergic reaction, are very rare and doctors and clinic staff are trained to
deal with them. Pay extra attention to your child for a few days after vaccination to ensure that side effects go away. If you see
something that concerns you, call your child’s doctor.
Vaccine Ingredients
Today, except for some flu vaccines, none of the childhood vaccines used routinely in the United States contain mercury
(thimerosal) as a preservative. Although no evidence suggests that there are safety concerns with thimerosal, vaccine manufacturers
stopped using it as a precautionary measure. Now, it is contained in very tiny amounts only in multi-dose vials of flu vaccine.
Thimerosal is necessary in vaccines that come in multi-dose vials because they require that each individual vaccine dose be drawn
from the vial with a new needle and syringe to minimize introduction of germs into the vial.
Ensuring Vaccine Safety
The United States' long-standing vaccine safety system ensures that vaccines are as safe as possible. In fact, currently, the United
States has the safest, most effective vaccine supply in its history.
Safety monitoring begins with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who ensures the safety, effectiveness, and
availability of vaccines for the United States. Before a vaccine is approved by the FDA for use by the public, results of studies on
safety and effectiveness of the vaccine are evaluated by highly trained FDA scientists and doctors. FDA also inspects the sites
where vaccines are made to make sure they follow strict manufacturing guidelines.
Let’s do our part is stamping-out infectious diseases by getting immunized across our lifespan
and by encouraging others to do so!

Vaccines: The Basics
Vaccines contain the same germs that cause disease.
(For example, measles vaccine contains measles vi-
rus, and Hib vaccine contains Hib bacteria.) But
they have been either killed or weakened to the
point that they don’t make you sick. Some vaccines
contain only a part of the disease germ.
