from Pastor Charlie...
If it’s springtime, then, we’re told, our thoughts ought to turn to love. Actually, I’m thinking about an abundance of
riches in regards to love: I have the honor, privilege and joy to be officiating at four weddings in 2018! Two of
them are FPC Salina-related; the others are the remaining unmarried members of the Mitchell/Smith family tree.
Each marriage in which I participate is a unique experience. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to get to know the
bride and groom, individually and as a couple, through meetings conducted before the wedding to, as I usually
describe it, “put some work toward your marriage (the life that you’ll share together as husband and wife after
saying, ‘I do’) that is at least commensurate to the work that no doubt goes toward organizing and orchestrating the
wedding.
The program that I have used, since I was ordained 15 years ago, to work with pre-marital couples is called
Prepare/Enrich. It’s a wonderful, fun (yes, I really mean it: Each couple who takes part really has fun!) inventory
that stresses the importance of communication between couples, recognizing particularly that all couples are made
up of very different individuals and that conflict and disagreements are inevitable. It helps couples see themselves,
and each other, in a new light that emphasizes individual personalities and their interaction and ways to
communicate. The inventory covers a number of subjects. It notes divergences between answers given by the
couples (“agree strongly” vs. “disagree strongly”) or in which both people answer the same way. The ensuing
discussions identify “areas of strength” and “areas of growth.” As I point out to each couple, the Prepare/Enrich
inventory is not a pass/fail “test.” It groups a couple into one of five categories, from “vitalized” to “unvitalized.”
The same skills as those identified by Prepare/Enrich also are
vital for married couples, no matter how long they have been
together. There is a separate program, called Empowering
Couples, that is designed to help build more vital and
satisfying couple relationships.
Think of it this way:
Would you wait 100,000 miles to change the oil in your car?
Would you go 25 years without a dental checkup?
Would you have a physical exam only once in your lifetime?
Your relationship deserves a checkup too!
I’ve taught the Empowering Couples class previously, and it
is always great fun. Let me know if you are interested in
learning more about it here at FPC Salina.

Keith’s Corner...Doing Church Intergenerationally
Over the next few months, I invite you to think with me through the ways people of different generations live
together and communicate – especially here at First Presbyterian Church. This month’s article will give a bit of
background on generation theory and how our different generations have been growing apart. Next month, we’ll
take a look at some reasons why we might try to be intentional about doing church intergenerationally. As always,
I’d love to talk with you about it, so chat with me, call me, email me, or stop by!
In their book Generations: The History of America’s Future, 1584-2069, William Strauss and Neil Howe describe
generations as distinct trains carrying groups of like-minded people to stations that represent the different stages of
life. For example, today, the “Millennial” train is passing through the rising adulthood station and the “Generation
X” train is passing through the midlife station. If you’re standing on the platform at different stations, each
generation’s train looks different because each generation has a distinct character.
Strauss and Howe’s train illustration speaks a bit to the “gap” folks feel between each generation that makes living
together a challenge. That gap has widened over the last century as American society has moved from an agrarian
one that largely lived together at the turn of the 20th century, toward one where ages are largely segregated. Today,
the youngest Americans receive an education separate from adults, who are in the workplace, who are separate from
the oldest Americans, who are retired.
One of the final bastions of intergenerational life has been the church. However, even communities of faith have
seen the influence of age segregation, with the term “silo ministries” being used to describe those areas of church
life that are segmented by age or stage of life. In general, Sunday school classes and worship services see the most
visible effects of age segregation in American churches, with many other areas of church life suffering from a lack
of intergenerationality, as well.
Some thoughts to ponder:
What assumptions do you have about people from other generations? What assumptions do you think others
have about your generation?
How have you felt interacting with people from different generations?
What barriers do you see for better interactions between generations? What opportunities do you see for better
interactions between generations?
Do you see more generational togetherness or more age segregation at FPC? Perhaps there are areas where one
is more dominant, and other areas where the opposite is true?
I look forward to continuing this discussion in the May newsletter.
In the meantime, please let me know what you think!

Children’s Christian Education (FBI)
Another month has come and gone! It's been a fun balance of laughter, fellowship, and learning. The FBI and FBI-
in-Training children's month of March has included experiencing Lenten Prayer Stations, bowling, waving of the
Palms for Palm Sunday, and an Easter Egg Hunt!
Mid-march before Spring Break, we headed to the bowling alley to enjoy
fellowship and laughter with each other- parents, friends, and siblings were
a welcomed addition to our Wednesday gatherings as we enjoyed nachos
and bowling together.
Sunday, March 25, Palm Sunday, we processed into the sanctuary waving
the palms in preparation of Easter Sunday. The following Wednesday,
thanks to the guidance of Pastor Keith, Tricia Cobb, and the youth group,
we celebrated Easter through crafts and hunting for eggs!
As we look to the coming
month, we prepare for our April
22nd, Children's Sabbath. We
hope that you will join us for
worship on that date as the
children lead all parts of worship
and we see a small number of
their talents shine through.
April marks the last full month of our Wednesday gatherings before we say "see you later" until next school year.
Our end of year party will take place on May 9 at the Teen City Center as we have traditionally done for the
past few years. All FBI and FBI-In-Training families are encouraged and invited to come join us for dinner,
laughter, and games from 6:30-8:00 PM.
Last, but not least, our 5th grade students were recently trained by the fabulous Bev Zizumbo on refilling pew cards.
As we move forward, weekly our 5th graders will take on this responsibility of ensuring that our pew cards are filled
each week for our Wednesday services. At the end of this year, our 5th graders will teach our current 4th grader the
process so they can take over next school year. What a great responsibility and leadership opportunity being given
to our young youth. Thank you, Bev, for your help and guidance!
We are excited about all of the opportunities and upcoming events of our children's education program that will help
us to finish out the remainder of the year!

God Squad - Mid High Youth Group
March has been one of our least busy months in the life of God Squad,
however, our gatherings have always been filled with such great
conversation and depth. Due to Spring Break, and other school activities,
we only met 2 of the 4 Tuesday's in March. Both gatherings were hosted
by 2 families- The Gary family and Pastor Charlie & Diana Smith.
Our conversations have been filled with discussions regarding the
unfortunate recent school events and bullying. It is SO extremely
rewarding and powerful to see the beautiful souls and kindness that fills
our God Squad- we TRULY have incredible youth!
Due to the timing of the newsletter and our upcoming March 30th, 7-Eleven lock-in, we will have to update you on
the excitement, lessons learned, and fellowship that was had at this event in our next newsletter submission. We
thank Pastor Keith for his leadership and help preparing for such an important event.
As we look towards the coming month of April, we have a lot of fun and fellowship to be had. Our dinners in April
will include gatherings at Chili's, The Bratt Home, Scholtzsky's, and Five Guys. In May, we will have 2 gatherings
- Sonic on May 1, and our end of the year party at the bowling alley on May 8.
Additionally as an added fun event, God Squad crew will be headed to the paintball field, Elite Sports Complex,
on Sunday, April 8th, from 1-3 pm. God Squad family and friends are invited to come and join the fun!
We can't wait to update you on the upcoming months activities- we'll make sure to share lots of pictures! Thank
you, all, for all of your support of the God Squad!
ATTENTION ALL SENIOR HIGH YOUTH. There is a hot FREE breakfast
and some spiritual nourishment available every Thursday morning at 6:45 (ish)
at Mokas on Crawford. If you would like to receive our weekly materials via a
text prior to the meeting, please text your cell phone number to Pastor Keith at
757-660-8219 and we will get you on the text list. Of course, additionally, we
would love to have you join us at Mokas!
We met every Thursday in March (except the 22nd during Spring Break). The
main themes from our discussions in March dealt with God’s grace, and our
grateful obedience. We talked about how the core of our faith isn’t in anything
that we can earn or have control over – it’s only in God’s love for us and the gift of God’s grace through Jesus
Christ. That gift defines who we are, and leads us to lives us gratitude for God’s love and grace. That gratitude
generates a desire to obey God’s will – through worship, study, service, and in every aspect of our lives.
Our weekly discussions centered on the below topics from Presbyterian Questions, Presbyterian Answers:
Why Did Jesus Have to Die?
If We Are Christians, Do We Have to Obey God’s Law?
What Is the Grace of God?
Do Presbyterians Believe That Christians Can Attain Perfection in This Life?
We appreciate the support and feedback of all youth and parents for HeBrews at FPC! Please let me know if you
have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat. I want to hear from you!
Peace, Pastor Keith

WOMEN’S MONTHLY BIBLE STUDY
Adult Education Opportunities
The FPC Women’s Bible Study group is using the Bible Study brought to us
by the PW/Horizons Bible study, and titled “Cloud of Witnesses, the
Community of Christ in Hebrews” by Melissa Bane Sevier. Please join us the
first Monday of each month as the author invites us to explore the book of
Hebrews, and tie those themes to our lives together with our faith community.
FPC is our faith community, and this group is a wonderful way to share and
support each other. Our next two meetings are April 2nd and May 7th at 5:30
p.m. in the Hope Room. Books are available in the church office. Please join
us any first Monday that you are able to share our faith and grow our
community of faith. Please email the committee with any questions to
[email protected] or ask the office staff. We hope to see you there!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT YOGA AT FPC
Spring has sprung! Celebrate at FPC any Wednesday to stretch
those muscles, slow down and listen to your inner self. You can join
Cathy Hayes or Melody Hardman and other women and men for
yoga on Wednesdays, 5:00-6:00 pm. A suggested donation of $5,
but is not required. All levels of ability are welcome for an
integration of body, mind and the spirit. If you have any questions,
email [email protected]
Led by Christ, Together in Faith and Love,
We Joyfully Think, Question, Grow and Serve!
You are invited to join us for our next opportunity to grow and learn
together. Beginning on April 8th, a new class called “Modern Parables”
will begin on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. in the Hope Room. This is an
original Bible study curriculum designed for people who like movies.
The study uses short dramatic films that help us to understand and
discuss how Jesus’ parables are important to us millennia after he first
spoke them. “Modern Parables” lets people grasp the parables at an
immediate, gut level and enables participants to engage the Bible in a
powerful and compelling new way. There will be a study guide
available in the office for those interested. All AGES are welcome!
The Adult Education Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month, 5:30 PM in the Hope Room.
Please join us as we develop and lead our Christian Adult Educational Programs. You may email any
suggestions to [email protected].

April 8th marks the 73rd anniversary of
the death of one of the 20th century’s
greatest theologians, Dietrich
Bonhoeffer. On that date in 1945 (a
Sunday, one week after that year’s
Easter – just like this year), Bonhoeffer,
a Lutheran pastor who had long
opposed Adolf Hitler, was hanged by
the Nazis at the Flossenburg POW
camp in Germany, only days before it
was liberated by American troops. The
last words of Bonhoeffer, 39, were:
“This is the end – but for me, the
beginning of life.”
In a 1944 letter written from prison to a friend, Bonhoeffer said:
“… it is only by living completely in this world that one learns to have faith. … living unreservedly in life’s
duties, problems, successes and failures, experiences and perplexities. In so doing we throw ourselves completely
into the arms of God, taking seriously, not our own sufferings, but those of God in the world …”
With these two statements, Bonhoeffer showed us how to live as well as how to die. Even in prison, Bonhoeffer
knew God’s nearness. He learned to face death because he experienced a daily dying with Jesus Christ. Bonhoeffer
wrote, “Christ in us gives us over to death so that he can live in us. Physical death in the true sense does not become
the end, but the consummation of life with Jesus Christ.”
“This is the end – but for me, the beginning of life.” What a confident assertion of our Christian belief in
resurrection – the message of victory over death that we joyfully proclaim at Easter! Jesus is not dead, but is alive –
his earthly body raised into a new and glorified form of existence, an existence over which death no longer
exercises dominion.
While in prison, Bonhoeffer wrote poetry and prayers. One prayer is titled “Powers of Good.” (It has since been
adapted into a hymn, “By Gracious Powers”)
By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered
And confidently waiting, come what may
We know that God is with us night and morning
And never fails to greet us each new day
Yet is this heart by its old foe tormented
Still evil days bring burdens hard to bear
O give our frightened souls the sure salvation
For which, O Lord, You taught us to prepare
And when this cup You give is filled to brimming
With bitter suffering, hard to understand
We take it thankfully and without trembling
Out of so good and so beloved a hand
Yet when again in this same world You give us
The joy we had, the brightness of Your sun
We shall remember all the days we lived through
And our whole life shall then be Yours alone
Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has risen.
(Luke 24:5)

Sign Up for Youth Summer Trips by April 23rd!
This summer will feature two great opportunities for us to grow our faith
and to grow together! We will have two summer trips: the Heartland
Youth Encounter (June 10-15) and a Mission Trip to Kansas City (July 8-
13). Both trips are for both middle and high schoolers. Our registration
deadline is April 23rd. See below for details.
The Heartland Youth Encounter will be a week spent building intentional Christian community within our
youth group and with new friends. It will feature:
High energy speakers and worship services, led by Dr. Rodger Nishioka and Beth Mueller
Engaging camp activities like horse rides, archery, swimming, and rock climbing
Awesome large group rec, including night games
Small group Bible studies led by the trained Heartland Camp staff
Five great activity track options: leadership, service, creative, challenge, and horse (visit the
Heartland Youth Encounter website for more details)
The Kansas City Mission Trip will be a week of building relationships and serving alongside our sisters
and brothers in the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City. With the help of the YouthFront
organization, we will learn how to participate in God’s mission to make the world right through engaging
our hearts, heads, and hands. The trip will conclude with an afternoon at Schlitterbahn Water Park.
Youth conferences and mission trips can be among the most important segments of our faith journeys.
We devote time to worship, study, service, fellowship, and fun. These trips give us the chance to exercise
our faith in God, creating opportunities to become stronger disciples of Jesus. As each one of us
develops deeper faith, we will also grow together as a group.
Signup information has been mailed to all youth families and is also available by contacting Pastor Keith.
Please return registrations to him as soon as possible, and no later than April 23rd.
Confidential scholarships are available by contacting Pastor Keith.

ATTENTION High School Graduating Seniors! Please mark your calendars for Sunday, May 6.
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! We are eager to
celebrate this important time with you. We will have a senior
recognition breakfast for graduating seniors and their families
before worship. There will be a time to recognize and bless
graduating seniors during worship. After worship, there will be a
reception in the parlor in the graduates’ honor.
We would also like to recognize our graduating seniors in our May newsletter. To do so, we are
asking for a small write up and a picture. The write-up should be a brief biographical sketch that
includes the school from which you are graduating and any future plans you have for after
graduation. We are also hoping for a one-sentence quote about your best memories growing up at
First Presbyterian Church.
Please submit all write-ups and photos via email to Beth Cormack ([email protected]). Deadline
for all graduation submissions is April 20th. Be on the lookout soon for more information about
the reception and worship service on Sunday, May 6!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 11
Those who attended the popular Wired Word class, held in the Hope Room at 9 a.m. each Monday, wrestled with the following topic recently:
“According to a story in The New York Times, some black worshipers are leaving white congregations, particularly white evangelical congregations. The last straw for many, according to the story, was white evangelicals’ support for Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Some black churchgoers apparently saw supporting him as equivalent to supporting racism, although voters who supported Trump did so for a variety of reasons, some having nothing to do with race. Even before that, however, some black
worshipers had already grown uneasy over the failure of their white pastors to address police shootings of African-Americans. That news can serve as a reminder of how narrow our own view of life and culture can be and an impetus to consider whether our faith calls us to stand with those whom the culture treats differently from us.”
Intrigued? Stirred? Outraged? Join us for the next class!
First Presbyterian Church of Salina will once again participate in May in Project Salina’s annual food drive, which collects nonperishable food items for agencies that distribute food or serve meals to people who are in need. The agencies served by Project Salina are the Salina Emergency Aid/Food Bank, the Salvation Army, Ashby House, Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas and the Salina Rescue Mission. FPC and other participating churches will be collecting cans of tuna and financial contributions. Each dollar received provides credit to FPC for two cans of tuna.
Thank You FPC Salina!
Thanks to those who donated $2,505.70 to First Presbyterian Church, Salina, during the seventh
annual Match Madness event at the Salina Fieldhouse on March 15. The event, hosted by the
Greater Salina Community Foundation, allows
donors to contribute to the endowed funds of more than 50 participating nonprofit organizations and
have their donation matched up to 50 percent with a cash grant from a pool of $100,000. The total
number of Match Madness gifts was 1,832 for $274.370.96.

2018 Walk to Jerusalem (W2J)
Many thanks to all the 2018 “faithful” Walk to Jerusalem trekkers. You rocked it again. No matter the deadline, we seem to arrive with time to spare. Halleluiah! You put up with the weekly email reminders and the occasional goofs and tardiness with equanimity and good humor. Bless you. We reached Jerusalem in record time: by the end of the sixth week. Well done. Every mile contributed by every person mattered in reaching that early total. Look for the final mileage total in an upcoming Sunday Bulletin in April.
Happy Easter… He is risen!
Brigid and Diana
P.S. Mark your calendars for October 27, 2018. Can you guess?
Mark your calendars! On June 10th, First Presbyterian Church of Salina will celebrate its annual River Fest Sunday with a performance by guitarist Rachel Taylor, whom critics have described as having a voice like “a string of lullabies, both wrenching and warming your heart,” with a sound reminiscent of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Iris Dement, and even Johnny Cash. Originally from New England, Taylor’s roots in music began in church. River Fest Sunday is celebrated at FPC in conjunction with the Smoky Hill River Festival at Oakdale Park in Salina. You’re encouraged to wear informal garb so that you don’t have to go home to change before you attend the festival after the 10 a.m. worship service. Visit www.rachellouisetaylor.com for more information.
River Fest Sunday is Coming June 10th!
MidWeek Manna Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.
The popular Midweek Manna meal and worship service will continue through April and into early May. It’s a great meal and fellowship, as well as worship with a twist! In the past few weeks, Pastor Keith has challenged traditional thinking about worship, and led tours of Lenten Prayer Stations. And you never know what you might see or hear (sometimes on a screen) when Pastor Charlie offers a message. Plus, the music will get you out of your seat. If you’ve not attended before, give it a try!

“Easter Essentials” A poem by the Rev. J. Barrie Shepherd
Strip away the perfect lilies
massed along, across the chancel steps,
the bright reflecting sight and sound of brasses,
and the white and gold of paraments and stoles.
Set aside two thousand years, almost, of holy words
and gestures, the jostling flotsam of an epic tidal surge
of global custom and conviction, conquest too.
Try to ignore this new spring sunlight,
the steady warming of the soil, the waking birdsongs,
green and early fragrant air. Reject all this
and you are left with a report, some blood-stained bandages
in a vacated garden cave, several startled temple guards,
a gaggle of bewildered witnesses, and through all this
a dawning hope, so strange yet sure it drives you
to your trembling knees, groping for fresh syllables
and sounds to shape this ever new, yet ancient cry.
The Lord is risen...risen indeed!
