Annual MeetingThe Annual Meeting of the Congregation and Corporation was held Sunday, January 29 following worship. The Terms of Call for Rev. Jim Hawley, Rev. Tom Reid and Rev. Austin Ashenbrenner were approved. Shannon Buchanan was also approved to be an Endowment Fund Trustee for the next three years.

BBBS Bowling TeamGet Ready! FPC staff will once again support Big Brothers/Big Sis-ters of Salina at their annual Bowl-ing fundraiser on Sat, Mar 31. The team needs to raised $600 to play, with the entire amount going to BBBS of Salina. Last year FPC contributed $1,347.05! Thank you for your support!

Meet our new Staff...Same as the Old Staff (kind of)! Sally Sutherland, an employee at FPC since 2008, is starting a new role as Communications Director! Sally will be focusing on in-house communication and technology, as well as helping the Evangelism and Hospitality Com-mittee ramp up FPC's presence in the community and hospitality to visitors.

Melanie Pearson, whose friendly face you are likely to see first as you step into FPC, has a new job title and duties! Melanie will serve as FPC's Of-fice Manager. She handles the day to day financial operations of the church and oversees all aspects of the church office!

FPC welcomed Diane Arnder to the staff in December 2011 as the Nursery Supervisor. She is responsible for ensuring that FPC’s nursery is a loving, safe and fun environment for FPC’s youngest members and visi-tors!

Mary Andersen has been a valuable employee at FPC for many years and is now using her talents and knowledge of FPC in a new volunteer role as the Pastoral Care Assistant to Disci-pleship and Congregational Care Pastor Tom Reid.

Child-Led Worship ·· April 22

Child-led Worship practice begins Wednesday, March 28! Participation is open to children in kindergarten through 5th grade, with practices running concurrently during Wednesday afternoon programs (3:45-5:30pm). Practice begins March 28 and runs for 4 consecutive Wednesdays, culminating in the performance on Sunday, April 22 at 10:15am. FPC Volunteer and mom Penni White will be leading the group. Lectionary Class: Hope Rm, New Times being offered, see schedule below!This class uses a lectionary based curriculum, Feasting on the Word, that is designed to compliment each Sun-day morning worship service. The classes, led by Tom Reid, will consider in greater depth the upcoming scrip-ture reading for Sunday morning. The class provides four different approaches to the week's scripture:

1. Exegetical: the contexts and settings of the scripture2. Theological: how God's word comes to us in the passage3. Pastoral: what the scripture means in relation to your life 4. Homiletical: how we can then live out that message as individuals and as a church.

Feasting on the Word Lectionary Class materials can be found online at www.fpcsalina.org/ministries/adult.

Faith Matters: 1st Floor Conference Room, Sundays at 9:00 am (repeats Tuesdays at noon)

This class helps to remind us that faith does matter! It meets in the Conference Room Sunday mornings at 9:00 am and explores a variety of subjects.

Feb 26 (and throughout Lent): Book Study on "The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus." Author Amy-Jill Levine, a professor of New Testament studies at Vanderbilt, helps Christians and Jews understand the "Jewishness" of Jesus so that their appreciation of him deepens and a greater interfaith dialogue can take place. Levine's humor and informed truth-telling provokes honest conversation and debate about how Christians and Jews should understand Jesus, the New Testament, and each other. Coffee, Conversation & a ThoughtYou are invited to come and participate! It is a time of fel-lowship, prayer, community, and conversation, spurred by a brief presentation, by Tom Reid.

Visitors to the group say that "it's upbeat and cheerful!" and that they like the sharing oppor-tunites of the group.

Come join the Coffee Group on the second Thursday of the month at 10:00 am, and the fourth Thursday of the month at 3:00 pm for an hour of coffee, conversation, and “a thought."

Men's Small Groups Are you interested in being a part of a small men's group designed to promote friendship, cama-raderie, and discussion, offer encouragement, honesty, confi-dence and commitment?

Current men's groups are filled, but there is an opportunity to form more of these small groups, with expanded leadership pro-vided by Jim Hawley & Austin Ashenbrenner.

Lent is the most personal of the liturgical seasons. The other “purple” season, Advent, is caught up in the frenzy of the pre-Christmas rush. Advent is also shorter and more prone to social events and cock-tails. By contrast Lent is subdued. Quiet. Lent is the season that stands in the corner stirring the same drink all night. Lent is a loner.

Maybe this is why we struggle each year to figure out what to do with Lent. Lent doesn’t come to us with party ideas and noisemakers. There is no Lenten tree to decorate. Lent is a blank page and we are holding the pencil. There are no lines on the page to guide us. We are alone with ourselves and the possibilities.

Sometimes we find something to focus on—to give up—for Lent. We can define the season by what we refrain from rather than what we embrace. For six weeks we can live without chocolate and tell our friends how well we are doing living without chocolate rather than spending time in solitude telling God how not well we are. Maybe if we ap-ply some temporary pain in the form of deprivation we can mask the echoes rebounding in the hollow spaces of our lives.

Jesus sought solitude. Jesus prayed in solitude. Jesus was tempted in solitude. Jesus spent the last night of his first life in solitude and Jesus died on the cross in solitude. That sounds awfully bleak. But Jesus also rose in solitude. And in rising Jesus passed through the solitude to return to the community of which he was apart. He came back not only risen, but glorified.

We need not fear the deep places. We must see soli-tude as a gift. The psalmist writes:

My whole being is depressed.That’s why I remember you

Deep calls to deepat the noise of your waterfalls

All your massive waves surged over meBy day the Lord commands his faithful love;

By night his song is with meA prayer to the God of my life.

What to do With Lent... by Jim Hawley

Walk the LabyrinthYou have an opportunity to use a labyrinth at FPC during Lent! Beginning Friday, Feb 24, there will be a labyrinth in Blair Hall on Fridays and Sundays for your use.

The labyrinth is a replica of the pattern that is inlaid in the paving stones of the nave in the medieval cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres. Labyrinths predating Christian tradition have also been discovered. Each time you walk the labyrinth can be a unique experience.

For many people, walking the labyrinth offers an opportunity for spiritual reflec-tion and growth. For others, the walk is a time of focus and intentional thought. For still others, walking the labyrinth may be a relaxation tool.

Take advantage of this special opportunity for solitude and reflection during Lent.

When is the offering received?Most congregations receive the offering on Easter Sunday, Palm Sunday or both, while many receive it throughout Lent. FPC receives the offering during Lent through Easter morning.

One Great Hour of Sharing – it’s remarkable what a child’s gift will do!

Use the OGHS “Sharing Calendar” and those colorful fish banks to help

your children learn about the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, as

well as what it means to give.

Fish banks & calendars will be handed out during Wednesday Pro-grams on Ash Wednesday, or can be

found on the information table in the main hallway during Lent.

In our congrega-tion's ongoing effort to offer Help and Hope to our community, the Social Justice and Mission Committee will offer an opportunity to support another great local organization begin-ning in February.

This quarter's selected organization will be C.A.P.S. (Child Advocacy and Parenting Services). We will be helping CAPS by assisting in their effort to help children and families have ac-cess to education. Please look on the Help and Hope table in the lobby just to the South of the entrance to the Sanctuary, to see how you can support this effort through your donations!
