This month brings great new titles for you to try.Ask Again, Yes: A Novel by Mary Beth Keane (Fever)
begins in 1973 in a small town north of Manhattan and cov-ers two families for the next 40 years. Two rookie NYPDcops are neighbors who are each settling into marriage withtheir new brides. As time passes, their children becomefriends, much to the chagrin of the boy’s mother. She sufferswith a mental illness that traumatizes the family. An act ofviolence changes their lives. The children are forbidden tosee each other as one family moves away, but love and for-giveness find a way to help them heal.
The 2019 Man Booker Prize Winner is Milkman byNorthern Irish author Anna Burns. An 18 year-old girl who isunnamed tells the story of a town, also unnamed, during theTroubles of the 1970s. It’s a terrifying tale of violence andmistrust. The Milkman, who doesn’t deliver milk, drivesflashy cars and starts to stalk the young narrator. He is aleader in the paramilitary. The relationship is discovered bya brother-in-law, which makes the girl interesting and subjectto gossip. In these times, to be interesting is to be noticed andto be noticed is dangerous.
In The Favorite Daughter by Patty Callahan Henry, LenaDonohue felt betrayed when she found her younger sisterkissing the groom just before the wedding. During the next10 years, she leaves the town and makes a new life as a NewYork travel writer. She returns home when she learns herfather is losing his battle with Alzheimer’s. She and her sib-lings collect their family history and photographs to preservetheir father’s memories with all its secrets. The effort provesto help the family to move toward the healing that they need.

Steak Shoot Players Love New Location!Pat Dowd
Our June session of Steak Shoot was a big hit with every-one as we moved upstairs to the main hall. This enabled ourplayers to enjoy the “Thirsty Thursday” food and beveragespecials. It also meant that those who have a problem goingdown to the lower level on the chair or the stairs didn’t haveto worry. We received lots of positive comments about themove and will continue to play upstairs for the time being.
Set 1 had six winners – Vic Szokan, Thomasine Barner,Betsy Grinches, Betty McArthur, Mary Alice Curran, andCarol Oroczko. These lucky people were soon followed byBetty McArthur again, Kathy Dowd, Carol Oroczko again,and Kathy Dowd again. Kathy also won in five cards or lessand took home an extra $5.
Next it was time for some new winners – Susie Cooper,Merrie Pyle, Pam Splittorf, and Ed Bopp. Following rightalong in Set 4 were Vickie Rowell, Mary Jane Ciaviarelli,Don Luni, Barb Bopp, and Linnea Meaney.
Soon it was intermission time. Many enjoyed the deli-cious hot dogs and hamburgers prepared by Kathy Fosterand Chris Faith. Some tried Sue McGill’s specialty drink,the “Woo-Woo” and were going back for another. But now,it was dessert time. The orange crush cake seemed to be abig hit, as were the other cakes. Tickets for the monthly cashdrawing and the “Holiday Cash” drawing sold quickly andwe were soon back to the games.
Set 5 made happy winners of Sue Obojski, BobFitzgerald, Anne Duncan, and Kathy Dowd - again. Thiswas her night! Our final regular set was won by Ed Bopp,Merrie Pyle, Peggy Bennett, Amy Bopp, and Jean Walsh.
With all the multiple winners we had, there were only twopackages of steaks to award in the first bonus round. MikeKeenan and Carol Oroczko tied for that game, but agreed tosplit, so each took home one package of two steaks.
The next two bonus games saw Sue Obojski win threepackages of skinless, boneless chicken breasts, andThomasine Barner was the winner of three packages ofbeautiful boneless pork chops.
Closing out the fun night was our “glitter girl”, PamSplittorf, who took home $53 and the steaks she had wonearlier!

Meeting, all paid members’ names will be entered in a cash
drawing held at the end of the meeting. The Executive
Board hopes to increase attendance at our meetings and
thought this would be an opportunity to put extra cash in
your pocket. Winner must be present to win. If the winner is
not present, the money will roll over to the next meeting.

Robin & John Burton will be travelling to Niagara
Falls, Canada, Helen Vura & Jack Murphy made their
annual trip to Put-In-Bay. We can now enjoy Jazz Band
music every Tuesday night at Tradewinds!
Congratulations to Bob Turk who will be inducted
into The Eastlake North High School Hall of Fame, Class
of 2019, on August 29, 2019 at LaMalfa Party Center.
Bob was a member of the 1962 Championship Football
Team.

the purchase of their new home in Concord.

Evers, in your prayers. Jeff has been in UH since
January.
Our sincerest condolences and prayers to the families
of Jim Slopnik and Pat Sweeney who passed recently; to
Noreen Hedderman on the loss of her husband, Howard
Hedderman; to the Corcoran, Durkin and Homan fami-
lies on the loss of Kathy Durkin; and prayers to Margie
& Tom Drew family. Margie lost two brothers in two
weeks. Our deepest sympathies to all.

NFL SUNDAYSThe Pub will open at 1 pm beginning Sunday, September
8 for NFL games. We are happy to report that we will also
be open on Mondays, September 16 and October 7 for the
Browns Monday night games. Please join us!
Theresa Argie, The Haunted HousewifeTheresa Argie, The Haunted Housewife, will join us at 7 pm, Friday, August 16 in the Phil Walsh Cabaret Room to discuss
her most recent book and ghost hunting experiences in the Cleveland area. This is an exciting new event at the Club that you
won’t want to miss! Admission is $10 at the door.
Theresa Argie’s father, Patrick J. Gallagher, emigrated from County Mayo in the 1950s. Theresa and her family grew up
immersed in the Irish culture. As a child, she spent years involved with the West Side Irish American Club. She married a won-
derful man with strong family roots and a mutual love for Ireland. Today, Theresa and her husband Jay are proud members of
the IACES.
Theresa makes her living as an author and public speaker. She often works with Cathi Weber, aka “The Ghost Lady” of
Lake County. Besides their work on the Willoughby Ghost Walk, the ladies are heavily involved with various fundraising
events and historic preservation projects. Theresa has penned two books; America’s Most Haunted (Penguin Random House
2014) and her latest, Love Beyond the Grave: True Tales of Haunted Hearts (Hestia Media 2018). Theresa shares stories from
her new book as well as her personal adventures as a ghost hunter and paranormal investigator. Hear about exotic locations
and local hotspots with Cleveland’s own Haunted Housewife. Love Beyond the Grave is a collection of real people, actual
events, and historic characters whose stories revolve around a common theme of love. But love can take many forms and man-
ifest in remarkable ways; sometimes it can be dangerous or even deadly. This powerful emotion can defy logic and transcend
physical death. Beyond normal, each story has a paranormal element. The author explores the tragic, traumatic, and sometimes
terrifying elements of these famous tales of love. Examples include: An eccentric couple whose love was so strong, neither
distance nor death could keep them apart; a rich playboy seduces a naive farm girl, leading to her inevitable fall from grace,
tragic death, and restless afterlife; a tenacious mother, fueled by love and unshakeable resolve, helps her murdered daughter
find justice from beyond the grave; a deadly love triangle that made headlines, inspired Hollywood, and crushed the soul of
“America’s Sweetheart”; the dark side of paradise, where one man’s morbid obsession turned a beautiful young girl into a
gruesome science experiment; a beautiful castle in Ireland, haunted by young lovers caught in the middle of warring clans;
and an entire chapter devoted to animals, remarkable creatures who remain loving and loyal long after leaving this mortal coil.
These are just a sampling of the stories included in Love Beyond the Grave: True Tales of Haunted Hearts. The people are
real, the events historic, and the ghost stories leave even the most skeptical reader scratching their head.

We can accommodate showers, graduations, banquets,receptions of all kinds, funerals and of course, weddings.We have two facilities available, the upper hall for largerparties and the Phil Walsh Cabaret room for smaller parties.Koumbaros is the exclusive caterer for the upper hall. If youwish to rent the lower hall you may bring in your own home-made food but you also have the option of using our clubcaterer.
