Just Being Good...
Last Sunday, my daughters and I heard a speaker at church, Best Selling Author
Bob Goff, speak about discovering the incredible in an ordinary world.
One of the things that Bob said really hit home for me. “Life isn’t a mission
trip, it’s Tuesday.” At times I feel like I am just going through the motions: I
fulfill my duties, I volunteer, I donate time and resources and I check a box
somewhere in my mind that I have fulfilled my obligations. I have completed
my Mission Trip! I tell myself, “I have quite a few philanthropy hours after all!”
Sometimes I get so locked into a short term goals that I forget the bigger
picture. That I shouldn’t be focusing on how much good I can accomplish, but
rather concentrate on just being good, every day. I need to focus less on
deadlines, schedules, requirements, obligations… and focus more on being a
good listener, friend, and being kind and passionate about ordinary things. As I
approach a new year, my resolution is simple, “Just be good, it’s Tuesday.”
That will be my reminder that every day I have a chance to make a difference in
little ways. No one cares if I am 15 minutes late for an appointment or that I
logged three philanthropy hours over the weekend. But people will notice if I
take the time to notice them.

NCL Sunnyside 2 December 30, 2013
We are so excited to announce that Sunnyside
Chapter has accepted a new philanthropy, The
Annie Ross House. This great organization is in
Milwaukie and will provide many opportunities
to serve the community.
Northwest Housing Alternatives operates the
Annie Ross House and has provided emergen-
cy shelter to families for over 25 years. They are
the only emergency family shelter in all of
Clackamas County and serve families with chil-
dren who are currently experiencing homeless-
ness. Five families a night reside at the Annie
Ross House and they also provide six units of
transitional housing to families with large barri-
ers to housing.

FESTIVAL OF THE TREESFESTIVAL OF THE TREES——20132013
The Providence Festival of Trees was another triumphant
event. Our chapter volunteers helped support not only Mrs.
Claus’ Kitchen but also Santa’s Workshop. Every single vol-
unteer really made a difference in the success of these ex-
hibits.
This is the 31st Festival of Trees event which allowed Provi-
dence to donate proceeds to Play Smart, an organization
that provides free youth heart screening tests. In years past
the Festival of Trees has raised funds for projects such as
nurse navigators and counselors for cancer patients and
medication assistance for those without resources. Since its
creation, the festival has raised more than $11 million for the
most vulnerable in our community.
Every year the Festival of Trees rely on 1200 volunteers to
give their time, talent and resources to make this event hap-
pen. This year our chapter alone provided around 240 vol-
unteer hours and in that time we brought smiles to children
and adults alike. Thank you all for your generous time and

For our November meeting, the Class of 2015 Moms and Daughters met for dinner
prior to the Nordstrom Event. Initially, the destination was The Cheesecake Factory but
when the ticktockers realized the 2 hour wait would impede with their shopping time, they
came up with a new game plan and headed to Red Robin. During dinner everyone partici-
pated in a Dining Etiquette contest to see who had the best table manners. Surprisingly, it
was none of the Moms. All of the girls were fierce competitors and ready to pounce and
point out any minor infraction. A joyous time was had by all. With our energy restored, all
headed to the Nordstrom Event for a fun filled evening with lots of laughter.

New MAT committee taking over the Internet!
This year marks the first year of the brand-new committee ‘Media Arts and Technology’ or MAT for
short. As head of the committee, I help lead my fellow ticktockers in spreading the news of NCL
through various outlets. We have creative input into the Facebook page, operate an Instagram ac-
count, a Twitter account, a YouTube account, and even a Vine account! All of these social networking
outlets will, hopefully, get people’s attention about how awesome we are. Also, another fun thing we’re
doing is filming videos! Right now we’re wrapping up an informational video about how to run a meet-
ing- which we believe will be a fun way to teach the incoming ticktockers how to run their meetings!
Overall, this committee has been a blast to work with and I can’t wait to see what it can accomplish by
the end of the year. See you on the web!

To keep our organization strong, we will always need to work to add new members. Please take a minute to think about
moms and daughters you know who might be a good fit for membership in NCL. Think about chatting with someone from
your:
• school • sports teams
• church • performing arts groups
• neighborhood • scouting organizations
We can recruit girls who are entering 7-10th grade next September from Happy Valley, Clackamas, Damascus, Gladstone,
and surrounding areas. Your membership committee can hand out lots of fliers, but that brings in only a few new mem-
bers. Our organization depends upon current members inviting moms to joins us. Please support NCL by inviting at least
one new member.

also invite her to one of our information nights:

OREGON FOOD BANK
By working at the Oregon Food Bank with other service and
community groups, our NCL Sunnyside volunteers make an im-
mediate impact to help fight hunger in the Portland metro area
and across the state.
Join volunteers of all ages to repack bulk foods, from pears to
apples to rice and beans, into family sized portions. Our next
group date is Saturday, February 15th from 1-3:30p. Please con-
tinue to refer to NCL calendar for additional opportunities as
they are available (OFB only schedules 30-60 days out). Thank
you for your support of this wonderful community service!

Over the past few months the Class of 2016 has been working on planning the cookie ex-
change. Everyone contributed something valu-able to the event. We have put a lot of time
and effort into planning parts from decor to the game. We were pleased to hear that our ef-forts were appreciated and everyone had a
good time. Thank you to those who participat-ed in our survey that made the game enjoya-ble for all. The leftover cookies were delivered to Pleasant Valley and Happy Valley fire de-partments. They were thrilled to accept them. Also, there were some nice patters left at the church that will be washed and brought to the next meeting in January. If you need them be-
fore then contact Kathy Gillies.

Cookie Exchange 2013
The Class of 2018 has doubled in size since last year with our small group of five ticktockers, to now a full
size group of 12 ticktockers. We have only been able to meet twice this year, but in our September meeting,
guest speaker Laura Walker helped our group get started with guidelines and a few suggestions to making
our year successful.
After attending a GLA conference our head GLA, Laura Terveen returned with the creative idea to use a shoe
organizer as a phone holder. Everyone in our group believes in giving respect to each other during a meeting,
so in result we decorated a sheet of paper with objects that represent ourselves, and put them in an individual
pocket. Every meeting before the meeting is called to order we all place our phones in our designated pocket
so our undivided attention is present during the meetings.Our most recent meeting in October was based
around personal hygiene and makeup. A student at Northwest College named Kelsee G. studies cosmetology
and came to answer questions we had about hygiene or makeup.
Finally, our cultural event in November was going to see Fiddler on the Roof, which our fellow ticktocker
Madeline Kester participated in.

SPRING LEADERSHIP TRAINING UPDATESPRING LEADERSHIP TRAINING UPDATESPRING LEADERSHIP TRAINING UPDATE
On March 15th the Sunnyside Chapter will be hosting the District 13 Spring Leadership Training. It’s our
responsibility to provide the venue for the NCL National Trainers, decorations and food for all those officers
participating from Oregon and Washington. Although we are relatively small in comparison to other Chap-
ters, we want to exhibit our enthusiasm and pride in all we collectively do.
This event will take place at the Friends of the Children philanthropy in NE Portland. The theme will be Al-
ways Look on the SUNNYSIDE of Life. We thought it would be a fun idea to start the training session off
with a brief video from our chapter starring the Ticktockers and Patronesses. This would be a great way for
others to get to know us and to thank everyone attending. Whether you want to be behind the scenes or
in front of the camera, there will be a place for everyone. And hopefully as a bonus, it will be a fun bonding
experience and a way for us all to get to know each other better.

If you’re a dancer, choreographer, song writer or visionary… we could really use your help pulling together
all the little details. We will be filming at various Philanthropies throughout the month of January and ten-
tatively we are shooting for a day towards the end of January to film a fun scene that will include the entire
chapter! Please stay tuned for further details….in the meantime please feel free to contact Andrea Scott at
