WE DID THIS TOGETHER! Today is a proud moment for Milton. We are delighted to announce that we achieved the goal of the Our Home, Our Hospital Campaign for the expansion of Milton District Hospital (MDH), reaching over $30 MILLION!

From our early beginnings in 1959, MDH has proudly served the Milton community. Steady growth over the years necessitated several expansions of the original building.

Starting in the early 2000’s, Milton’s unprecedented growth caused an increasing demand for healthcare services, resulting in the announcement of government approval for a major expansion in August 2011.

The Foundation embarked on a campaign to raise $30 million necessary for equipping and furnishing the newly expanded hospital. The success of this campaign depended solely on the generosity of you, our donors and our community! Collectively you understood that government does not provide funding for hospital equipment needs and that the community needed to step up! Without your deep

commitment to our hospital, our goal would simply not have been attainable!

Our hearts are filled with gratitude and appreciation toward our donors and supporters. This community has demonstrated that it truly believes that “we’re in this together!” Your extraordinary generosity has reverberated through the community and inspired corporations, businesses, individuals and community groups to support our common goal.

And here we are…! On October 1, 2017, we moved into our new building, equipped and ready to provide the healthcare that our community needs and deserves. We did this together! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your unparalleled and ongoing support.

You Made Your Mark — Together We Raised$30 MILLION for the Expansion!

We did it! Together we raised over $30 million to support healthcare in our hospital for our families and community! Our $30 million Campaign for Our Home and Hospital is complete, thanks to our entire community and your overwhelming support!

I want you to know that I am humbled and moved by your generosity, and I want to express my gratitude to all of you who have contributed, and to all our volunteers who worked diligently as members of our Campaign Cabinet and the MDHF Board.

Endeavouring a $30 million Campaign was an unprecedented venture in this community and a daunting task that could only be accomplished by a complete and total commitment from corporations, businesses, individuals and organizations alike.

Every day we see firsthand the impact of your support on our patients and their families! Whether they visit the Emergency or Imaging Department, require services from the Maternal Newborn Unit or Surgical Services, they find well-equipped comfortable spaces that enable our staff and physicians to provide the healthcare that our community needs and deserves.

I want you to pause for a moment and realize that WE DID THIS TOGETHER! You have demonstrated that you truly understand that our hospital is central to the healthcare needs of the entire community. WE CAN’T STOP HERE! Moving forward let’s resolve to continue together, keeping our hospital well equipped and ready to meet the ongoing and ever-growing needs of our community.

I believe I speak for the entire MDHF Board and Staff when I tell you that with continued support such as yours we are looking toward the future with optimism and confidence.

With my heartfelt gratitude,

Helen Vatistas, Executive Director, MDHF

Message from the MDHF Executive Director

We asked you to make your mark on the Our Home, Our Hospital Campaign for the expansion of Milton District Hospital and you responded! Whether you received a personal letter, read an ad in the paper, visited our website, or saw our message on a local bus…

You responded with the generosity and determination we have come to associate with our community.

You understood that government does not provide funding for hospital equipment needs, and that MDHF exists to raise funds to help purchase essential medical equipment and technology…

You responded with gifts of all sizes for the greater good of the community. Collectively we reached and surpassed the Campaign goal!

It’s hard to believe, but we are closing in on the 6 month mark since move-in day. As we are settling in, we are already seeing emerging priorities for equipment needs that will rapidly require our attention. Our long history has taught us that we always need to be looking forward, anticipating the future. There is no exception now and we will be proud and honoured to continue to have your generous support on this journey!

Since opening day October 1, 2017...

YOU made it possible...

Page 4: Volume 4, Issue 2 March 2018 - Milton District Hospital ...€¦ · Today is a proud moment for Milton. We are delighted to announce that we achieved ... including orthopaedic, urology

After many years of planning and two years of very fast-paced construction I am thrilled to say that we have launched a new era of healthcare at Milton District Hospital. Sunday, October 1, 2017 was truly an historic day that will have a lasting impact on our patients, our community, and our organization.

The day saw many memorable firsts. The first patient arrived at the new Emergency Department within an hour of opening, and the first baby — a girl — was born in the new Maternal Newborn Department at 4:34 p.m. And on that day, a total of 43 inpatients were safely transferred from the obstetrics, medical surgical, intensive care and emergency departments to the expansion in less than three hours.

The redevelopment of Milton District Hospital was achieved with great vision, dedication and hard work supported by many individuals and groups who are passionate about healthcare in our community.

With the goal of raising $30 million the Foundation’s Our Home, Our Hospital Campaign was the largest fundraising campaign in the history of Milton. Monies raised through donations and the Foundation’s many fundraising initiatives allow us to purchase vital medical equipment that government funding alone cannot provide.

The campaign successfully funded the purchase of more than 7,300 pieces of equipment, from wheelchairs and IV poles to stretchers and incubators. These tools will empower our healthcare teams to deliver community-based patient care, now and in the years to come.

Your generosity has had a significant and lasting impact on the quality of healthcare in our community. With your ongoing support we will continue to build on our commitment to transform the community hospital experience and deliver exemplary patient experiences, always.

Efficient Urgent Care in the Orlando Corporation Emergency DepartmentMilton District Hospital’s new Emergency Department has been completely transformed. It has built capacity for 38 treatment areas to accommodate over 45,000 patient visits a year. The department provides a full range of Emergency services and is divided into four distinct colour coded zones:

• The trauma or yellow zone supports our most critically ill patients.• The acute care or green zone for patients suffering from shortness of

breath, severe abdominal pain, chest pain etc.• The rapid assessment or blue zone for patients presenting with lower

acuity conditions.• The paediatric observation short stay unit or purple zone

accommodating up to 24 hours of observation and treatment for children.

Detecting Illnesses EarlierUntil a problem is detected, it can’t be treated. The use of diagnostic imaging technology is one of the greatest advances in medicine, enabling physicians to diagnose and treat their patients rapidly and safely. Thanks to donor support, the expanded Magna International Imaging (X-Ray)/Fracture Clinic offers several new services including Milton’s first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner and the introduction of Angiography/Interventional technology. Furthermore, we now have the ability to double our Ultrasound capacity.

Giving Families the Best Start Possible in Maternal Newborn CareThe new, larger, enhanced Maternal Newborn Unit, with a capacity for 2,500 births per year, provides our tiniest patients with the best possible environment to enter the world. In addition to expanded capacity, the Maternal Newborn Department offers new services including a dedicated Operative Birthing Suite for planned and emergency caesarean births and the addition of a Level 2A Special Care Nursery to care for babies who need extra support and monitoring.

Reduced Recovery TimesPatients who require surgery are benefitting from advances in medical technology that dramatically increases the ability to perform more precise and less invasive surgical procedures; as a result, patient recovery times are reduced. Thanks to support from our community, the Surgical Program is well equipped for general surgery as well as a variety of specialized surgeries including orthopaedic, urology and gynaecology. The new Procedures Unit will accommodate procedures such as cystoscopy and colonoscopy.

State-of-the-art Care for Our Most Critical PatientsThe new Dr. Scott A. and Sherry Vanstone and Family Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides specialized care services for patients with a wide range of complex and rapidly changing medical, surgical and cardiac disorders. With capacity for 10-beds, the department features state-of-the-art technology and ample clinical space to deliver care to the hospital’s most critical patients. Family amenities include a comfortable family lounge for larger groups of family to gather.

At our Community Partners Recognition Event on February 8, 2018, Maggie and Cosimo Lizzi, owners of La Rose Specialty Foods and Fine Italian Bakery, received the Brian Brady Award for longest standing Community Partner of the MDH Foundation.

La Rose holds a unique place within the community. People of many walks of life and ethnic backgrounds, both young and old, rely on this business to provide the specialty food items they need to prepare cherished recipes, as well as pastries and cakes for their family celebrations. Area businesses and their employees frequent the lunch counter for delicious hot dishes or sandwiches, and rely on their catering services for a variety of events.

La Rose’s exemplary support of the Foundation as major donors has spanned decades and has included sponsorships, voluntarism and Community Partner fundraising events, such as their popular Italiafest and the La Rose Anniversary Gala with all proceeds designated for the MDH Foundation.

Held every 5 years, the La Rose Anniversary Gala has become the family’s signature fundraising event. Their 25th Anniversary Gala in 2007 raised $25,000, followed by their 30th Anniversary Gala in 2012, which raised $61,000. Last year, on September 17, 2017 the 35th La Rose Anniversary Gala, held at the Rattlesnake Golf and Country Club raised an amazing $100,000 towards the Our Home, Our Hospital Campaign for the expansion of Milton District Hospital!

After the 2012 La Rose Gala, Brian Penman, Chair MDHF, commented that: “It is people like Maggie Lizzi and the Lizzi family whose generous support will make the expansion of our hospital possible.” Looking back today, with our expansion in full operation for nearly 6 months, we can say unequivocally that Brian hit the nail right on the head with that statement.

Thank you, Maggie and Cosimo and the entire Lizzi family for your generosity and continued support. With donors like you we are confidently looking forward to the future!
