The Session, and all that accompanied it, was thrilling and a memorable one for me. I have the opportunity to lead this State into 2013, and I hope that I do the best job that I can do for all of us. I want to focus on the Number One, like I stated in my program. One is a very powerful number because sometimes, it only takes ONE….In this year, although it is only a One year term, it is my hope that I help my fellow brothers and sisters in any way that I can. In these hard times, where lodges are struggling to stay afloat, lets reserve some time , and help get them back on their feet. I know our purpose is to help others, but we need to help ourselves as well. I am looking forward to my Official Visits and I have some plans to approach my visits with a strong message of hope. I would like to get to work with each lodge in a way that will help them and educate me. I would like us to get involved in a humanitarian effort, to help with people who suffer from the effects of, for example, Hurricane Issac. We can truly make a difference , as a group, and at the same time, get our name out there. It is still beyond me, that we have to fight for recognition, but it is my firm belief, that, through faith, our plight will not go unnoticed! I look forward to working with our Deputy Grand Master, Doug Planner, as we go forward. It is my hope, that our road trips will be many, and our accomplishments, fruitful. I look forward to my many trips this year. New Jersey Independent Order of Odd Fellows Generously Supports OGCC

OGCC’s chair, JoAnn Symons, traveled to Atlantic City, NJ on June 28 to accept a $10,600 donation from the Grand Lodge of New Jersey Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) during their annual meeting. The I.O.O.F. is one of the world’s oldest fraternities, composed of both men and women, with the goal of participating in charitable works to improve the lives of others. Their commitment to OGCC has been inspired by Jack Oziel, a long-time member of the New Brunswick Lodge of I.O.O.F. and father of the late Rhonda Oziel, who was a founding member of OGCC. The Grand Lodge of New Jersey I.O.O.F. has been a dedicated, long-time supporter of OGCC’s efforts to fight ovarian and gynecological cancers. Thanks to their generosity, OGCC has expanded outreach efforts with two new programs this year. We have begun distributing “patient care tote bags” containing medical information and comfort items to newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients. OGCC also is providing small grants to financially needy patients to help with medical expenses during treatment of gynecologic cancers. In appreciation of their generous support in the fight to protect all women against gynecologic cancers, OGCC will honor the New Jersey I.O.O.F. at a Survivors Tea on Sunday, September 23, at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, D.C.

SOVEREIGN GRAND LODGE SESSION The 186th Sovereign Grand Lodge Session was held in Cincinatti, Ohio, from August 20th through the 24th, presided by SGM Delmar Burns. New Jersey attendees included Grand Secretary Mike O’Connor, Rebekah Vicki Burger, Grand Encampment Rep Steve Wooton, Bill & Cheryl Wallace - who came up for Vicki, and myself, Dan Lefever, who is the recently installed Odd Fellow Rep. Here’s a brief explanation on what went on. Orientation was held Sunday morning for new Reps, which gives direction on what we would see, how things will move along, what to pay attention for and how to handle situations on the floor. There is a protocol that must be followed and a formality that signifies importance. Later that day, there was practice and then the formal Flag Presentation ceremony. Vicki and I had the privelige of carrying the NJ Flag in procession. It’s a week of early days, as Reps are expected to be seated by 8 am to prep and be ready to go by the time the gavel hits at nine. By then, each must be registered with proper ID so Roll Call can proceed quickly and a count taken. A count is important to determine what number of votes is needed to pass legislation and for the election of new officers. A large crowd of Reps were sworn Monday morning; including first time Reps and those beginning new terms. Once Session starts, things move quickly. Resolutions and Bills are put forward, votes taken at quantum speed and items can be missed. People say it takes two Sessions to really get the feel of things here, which seems right. Each morning, the prior days transcript is at our seat to be read individually, so we are prepared for the upcoming business and fully understand what is going on. Most work is done during Committee Meetings, held after Session ends for the day. I was named to the “Patriarchal Degrees 4” Committee, with Richard Smith as Chairman. We met three times for an hour each and had two Reports to put on the Floor. Mike and I attended the IOOF International Press Assn. [IPA] and the Secretaries & Scribes committee meetings. I had opportunity to write my first two Resolutions, each regarding financial allocations for the IPA. My hand written Resolutions were turned in at Sovereign’s Office to be typed by Staff. Later I retreived them in correct form. The next morning, official Resolutions were collected on the floor, read aloud by the Secretary and mine were refered to the Finance Committee. That body later discussed and voted on them. The following day their Reports, each recommending passage of these Resolutions, was voted on and approved by the body, so the funding requests passed. Votes were cast at Session regarding the Rose Parade Float and Committee; changes to the Code regarding Degrees, wording and other things. As is usual, some items were tabled until next years session. Separate meetings were held to discuss the UN Pilgrimige, the merger of Military units of the Order, the United Nations Pilgrimige for Youth and the Data System that Sovereign is considering. One of the 3 data presentations was made by Steve who was professional and thorough. More will be reported on these subjects in the next edition of the Samaritan and in the formal report to the Grand Lodge. During the week, we were addressed by Charles Vaughn, GM, Manchester UnityFriendly Society; Harold Thoen, Grand Sire of GL of Europe and Louis Sarmiento, District Deputy Sovereign GM of the Phillipines. Thursday evening, Charles Renniger of Washington DC, was Installed as the new Sovereign Grand Master. He is very business like in his presentation and he speaks seriously and honestly regarding where the Order now stands and what we must do to preserve our future. It will not be an easy job, but we must meet it head on to prevail. Hopefully, his leadership will allow us to begin our renewal. Those in attendence who New Jersey members would know, included; George Glover, the Past Sovereign Grand Master who visited NJ Sessions twice in recent years, was seated at the main table. George has an open personality and goes out of his way to make those around him feel very comfortable. He actually remembered us Jersey folkes travelling to Rhode Island for his Testimonial. George is the epitemy of what Odd Fellowship is all about. Our West Virginia friend and Turtle Club associate, Larry Ferguson, was there, too. He is the one who had many of us, myself included, [Arleen, Lillian & Sylvia too] kneeling on the floor, bending over before we really knew what was going on. Larry is a regular at Conclave but was not at Niagra Falls, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him. As Rep, I was proud to be one of several who seconded his nomination for Grand Warden. The Lynch’s, of Delaware, were here as Reps. Mike for the Oddfellows and Jerry for Encampment. They are regulars at NJ’s Sessions. Mike offered some good advice and it helps knowing a smiling face in such a large crowd of … unknowns. I can’t say strangers, as there is a comradery here. The Sovereign Grand Chaplain, “Doc” Malin, gave meaningful Invocations each morning. Many of us know Doc, as he is a regular visitor to our N.J. Sessions and he also attends the Conclaves as a Rep from Maryland. Each of his Prayers were thought provoking and informative. He began with some type of historical perspective; as with Ben Franklin’s development of the original street lights in Philadelphia; which tied in with “Thy Devine Light of our Creator.” [Continued next page]

The Samaritan 6

[Cont. from pg. 5] I looked forward to each of his presentations, which included; “Prayer,” a comforting take on the meaning of prayer and how it is a communication between those created and their Creator; “The F.R.O.G.,” Full Reliance On God;” “A Light For Our Path,” which included Franklin and the line, “Even in a darkened world, our lights can shine brightly and guide others on the right path;” “Traveling Angels” which told a story of how things are not always as they seem; and “What Goes Around, Comes Around.” I found something in these prayers to give me lift and to put a smile on my face as each day began. Doc put much thought into his series of Invocations and he gave terriffic presentations. As well done as each was, I must add that I looked forward to them not only for their moral value, but also because Doc is an accepting friend who went out of his way to make this new guy feel welcomed. I am proud to be the Representative for New Jersey to the Sovereign Grand Lodge. I am also humbled in that I now sit in a Chair that has been held by so many good men; most recently, Joe Hubbs, who has done such a great job representing us for eight years. Joe gave me the benefit of his time and advice which helped me prepare for the Session and I know, in retrospect, how much easier things were because of it. Needless to say, [but I will anyway] I have big shoes to fill. Steve Wooton was also a big help, offering advice and tips as the days went on. He also explained why this or that was done or was not done. I followed Steve’s lead as we went forward to deliver funds from the Grand Lodge & Grand Encampment to the S.O.S. Village in Cambodia and he did a fine job making the presentation. Mike O’Connor and I travelled and roomed together, which we have done often over the last several years. During our down time, we visited the Newport Aquarium, toured the Underground Railroad Museum and hung out at Fountain Square, enjoying the live summer musical events. It has to be said that Ohio’s Session planning committee did a terriffic job. The business end of it seemed to go with out a hitch. The Events were top notch and the food was great. At the Banquet, Dan Kramer & his one man show got the crowd involved and kept us all laughing, then Phil Dirt & the Dozers did a great sixties and seventies show that had the dance floor full the entire night. Last said, if NJ evers hosts Sovereign, we would be proud if it went as well as Ohio’s did in 2012. Congratulations Ohio ! --- Dan Lefever

PRAYER CHAIN

Thank You for the many prayers, cards and calls at the time of my daughter Paula's illness and passing. Life holds many blessings - Thanks for being one of them." Fraternally and Sincerely, Dottie and Frank Nagle Please keep J.R. Powell and his family in your prayers as Jay suffered another injury after a

fall. J.R.’s Spine was injured and he was hospitalized for a time.

Mike Perez could not attend the GL Session when he was Grand Master due to heart trouble. His condition was severe and he needed another procedure that was done recently. Unfortunately, Mike lost eyesight in one eye and his driving is restricted. He could use our prayers. Please keep him in mind during your daily meditations. Mike O’Connor Please keep Jack Dudas, of Lawrence Lodge, in your prayers. Jack has had a myriad of health issues that has limited his ability to travel from home. He is healing, slowly. With a heavy heart I must inform you of the passing of PGM Rafael Rosales. He served our Order with pride and distinction and he will be sorely missed. He believed in and practiced friendship, love, and truth in all his affairs. His love for the Order and for his Brothers and Sisters was evident in every aspect of his life. He was an inspiration to so many. Mike O’Connor

TORI LEE…. We thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers - they have carried us through a grueling time in our life. And here we are.... I've been hesitant to write sooner - I've been so eager to get through this past month, and get to the day that I could write that TORI IS DONE!!! She had her final chemo infusion last Monday, and then early this morning we went in to Day Stay at the hospital, checked blood counts and proceeded to have the surgery to remove the central line port in her chest. She woke up with an IV in her hand, a little sore, but port-free! We got home early afternoon, and she's been resting - still some discomfort, but doing pretty well. It is difficult to comprehend what she has been through since October 2008. Almost 1400 days of treatment. Today we were given documentation of all of the procedures that she has had. I couldn't really even look at it, let alone flip through the stack of papers, but Chris was quick to give me an idea. Over 50 blood transfusions. 26 spinals taps. 14 bone marrow biopsies. Hundreds of finger sticks, shots, and needles, and almost 300 nights in the hospital. Mind blowing stuff, but she did it!! And of course, in this world of pediatric cancer, it's obvious and unfortunate that we will always be cautious and looking over our shoulder. But for today we feel sweet relief. We don't want to worry about any what ifs. We know they exist. We don't want to worry about the long term effects of all of the treatment she's had. We know they exist as well. We just want to celebrate this moment. And we also want to give thanks. Such sincere thanks to our family, friends, community and charitable organizations - without you, we know full well we'd have suffered a lot more than we did. For those of you who have been there to lift Tori's spirits, to make her feel special, to give her moments of happiness - we will never be able to thank you enough. The friends who made her feel like a normal kid, the parents who invited her over for play dates or took her on outings with their families and gave her wonderful moments away from her often lonely, isolated world - you have no idea what that meant to us and to her. And for those of you who have been there for our other children, and who have helped our family survive throughout this nightmare, your kind acts have inspired us. We truly are grateful to so, so many people. Every little act of kindness built the foundation that held us up. THANK YOU!! { This is a snipet taken from the 8-20-12 e-mail sent by Tori’s mom, Dana Lee… Tori is the little girl who battled Lymphoblastic Leukemia for 4 years and who was the “hero’ of NB #6’s first Golf Outing. )

HOME COOK HEROES, JULY 21, 2012 Numerous Grand Lodge members, and some Local Lodge members, met at the Gift of Life House to prepare dinner for the families of the transplant patients on July 21st. It was the second such visit this year and will be part of our continuing program for the families staying at the Gift of Life House. Christine and Harold Delhagen greeted Members as they arrived and her Baked Beans was a highlight of the meal. The Delhagen’s broke bread with some of the family members who were present, offering quiet understanding for their plight and then, insight into the stuggles of these families to the Odd Fellow volunteers. The card shown was offered by the mother of little Weston Keeton, who is awaiting a heart and double lung

transplant. Julie Keeton is surprisingly upbeat in the face of what her family is dealing with. She spoke with hope and expectations for the future. The Gift of Life House is a partner that all Odd Fellows can be proud of. The House offers a quiet and comfortable “home away from home” for families who are engaged in a battle for life and tries to give some semblence of normalcy. Please join us for future visits to the Gift of Life House, as we seek to do our part to Relieve the Distress of Our Fellow Man. The Gift of Life House is what Odd Fellowship is all about.

CHAPLAINS CORNER A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago . They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night's dinner. In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly-missed boarding...

ALL BUT ONE!!! He paused, took a deep breath, got in touch with his feelings and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on with out him, waved good-bye, told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor.

He was glad he did. The 16-year-old girl was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her; no one stopping and no one to care for her plight.

The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table and helped organize her display. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket. When he finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, "Here, please take this $40 for the damage we did. Are you okay?" She nodded through her tears. He continued on with, "I hope we didn't spoil your day too badly."

As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him, "Mister...." He paused and turned to look back into those blind eyes. She continued, "Are you Jesus?"

He stopped in mid-stride... and he wondered. He gently went back and said, "No, I am nothing like Jesus - He is good, kind, caring, loving, and would never have bumped into your display in the first place."

The girl gently nodded: "I only asked because I prayed for Jesus to help me gather the apples. He sent you to help me, so you are like Him - only He knows who will do His will. Thank you for hearing His call, Mister."

Then slowly he made his way to catch the later flight with that question burning and bouncing about in his soul: "Are you Jesus?"

Do people mistake you for Jesus? That's our destiny, is it not? To be so much like Jesus that people cannot tell the difference as we live and interact with a world that is blind to His love, life and grace.

If we claim to know Him, we should live, walk and act as He would. Knowing Him is more than simply quoting Scripture and going to church. It's actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day .

You are the apple of His eye even though you, too, have been bruised by a fall. He stopped what He was doing and picked up you and me on a hill called Calvary and paid in full for our damaged fruit.

"Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections."

Annual Charity Golf Outing

The New Brunswick Lodge held its 4th Annual Golf Outing September 17th at the Peddie Golf Course in Hightstown. It was a rousing success. Seventy three sportsmen showed to support the fund raising event at the beautifully maintained, 18-hole, par-72 course, which is said to be “Golf’s Best Kept Secret” in New Jersey. Continental Breakfast was served, a refreshment cart offered an assortment of snacks and beverages on the greens, hot dogs were served at the half way point and, afterwards, a barbeque buffet, including Tom O’Connor’s slow roasted venison, was a big hit. The blue skies and warm dry air made it an enjoyable and comfortable day. Support from our Brother Lodges is very much appreciated. Navesink lodge sent 9 golfers, and holes were Sponsored by French, Clinton, Navesink, Grotto and even some individual member famiilies. Due to Tom Calabrese’ hard work, each golfer walked away with a door prize, ranging from travel mugs to a large assortment of golf clubs. There was a tricky tray that included a signed New York Jets football and various other items. Among the other Lodge members present at the Outing were, Diane Brierley, John and Patty Parke, Donna Lefever, Kevin O’Connor, Mike O’Connor and Tom O’Connor; some of whom golfed and all of whom worked the event.

Proceeds will go to the family of Samantha "Sammi" Whelan, an11 year old battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma since 2009. Our donation will help offset massive Medical expenses. Sammi and her family were invited to the Outing but, unfortunately, she could not make it. We wish Sammi and her family the best of luck and the Blessings of good health.

Tom received the following e-mail message that morning… Dear Tom, I just wanted to email to tell you we are not able to make it today. Sammi has been experiencing very low blood pressure despite the fact that she is on medication for it and it all stems from the chemotherapy. She just isn't up for travelling today. Please apologize to everyone for us. We want to thank all of you for doing this in Sammi's honor. Will there be a time when we could meet your group and thank them personally? It's a beautiful day and we hope everyone had a good time. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts, you are all truly special people to do this for others. Sincerely, The Whelan Family

SANCHEZMOYACELEBRATESANNIVERSARYOn Sunday, September 16th, Sanchez Moya Lodge #282 celebrated its 21st Anniversary with a Dinner Dance at the Lodge Hall. Rigo Giron, Noble Grand of Alvarez del Portal, handled DJ duties and kept the crowd entertained and dancing. As they have done in the past, Sanchez Moya recognized the achievements of the Past Noble Grand during his term. This year, Ramon Cartagena was recognized for his hard work and dedication to the Lodge, which resulted in a growth in membership and activity. He was rewarded with a beautiful cut glass Trophy and the accolades of his Brothers and Sisters. Ramon is a present District Deputy Grand Master who has brought his excitement and eager personality to his Brother Lodges and the Grand Lodge.

More than one hundred people attended with guests coming from many different lodges, two states and another country. Guido Miranda, who helped with Master of Ceremonies duties, said the Members were honored and happy with the presence of NJ Grand Master, Diane Brierley. Visitors included Raul Rodriguez of the Pan American Lodge in New York City; a Past President of the Rebekah Assembly in Cuba, Sylvia Roman; Hector Gulano of the Patria Libertad Lodge, who spoke for the Past Grand Masters Assn.; a present Noble Grande of the Pan American Rebekah Lodge in NYC; Fernando Pita, Past Grand Sire of Cuba and many members of the Alvarez del Portal Lodge, among others.

During the celebration, Sanchez Moya Noble Grande Belgica Cartagena presented several posters of the Patron Saint of Cuba, La Virgen de La Caridad (Our Lady of Charity) to several visitors, including GM Brierley. The day of celebration

for Our Lady of Charity was on September 8th.

Milltown’s 4th of July Parade

New Brunswick & Clinton Lodges were out in force for the 2012 July 4th Parade in Milltown! What a beautiful day it was; large crowds lining the streets, recognizing the Odd Fellows as those America loving citizens on the farm wagon - playing great patriotic music and handing out American Flags! The kids look for the frisbees and the candy, too. Our seventh year in the parade was the best so far, as we distributed 700 flags, 300 frisbees and 50 lbs. of sugary glee and had the truck decorated with banners. Milltown holds one of the largest Parades in the state on Independence Day and it gets bigger each year. All Odd Fellows & Rebekah’s are welcome to join us next year. We can make room on the wagon for those who cannot make the walk. Thanks, as always, to the Giamarese family for allowing us the use of their wagon… which is still used for farm work in the Garden State. [See photos on next page]

GRAND MASTER HAS BUSY SUMMER

GM Diane Brierley had a busy, Busy SUMMER this year. Beginning with the Session,

she had the Milltown Parade, GBPB meetings, The Gift of Life House Dinner, Camp CHAT, the

Annual Picnic, Lodge 6 Barbeque, time sitting after Church selling Golf tickets, a Meeting

with the Arthritis Foundation National Rep and the Reorganization Meeting at the Cranbury

Inn on September 5th.

From that time, she’s been running through September, too. The Local had a Flea Market on

the 8th, then on Thursday, the 13th, she travelled to Alvarez del Portal Lodge for her first

Official Visit. The Bothers and Sisters of Alvarez del Portal, Sanchez Moya and Patria

Libertad Lodges treated her to a standing ovation and honored themselves by their show of

class and dignity to her. The 14th & 15th brought Diane to Southbury for the Connecticut

Session, where she met Sovereign Grand Master Chuck Renniger and that state’s Grand

Lodge Staff. The 16th, was the Sanchez Moya Anniversary Dinner and the following Sunday,

she was at Washington DC for the Rhonda’s Club celebratory High Tea, which awarded the NJ

Grand Lodge for the support we have shown them over the

past decade or so. Add to that, the regular Lodge meetings,

the fund raising Golf Outing of the New Brunswick Lodge and

the GBPB’s Annual Roast on the 27th. You can see why she

might be winded.

With the upcoming Rebekah Session, Official Visits to Odd

Fellow and Rebekah Lodges, several Testimonials and all kinds of

other events upcoming, it’ll be a very busy, Busy YEAR!

All Odd Fellows are invited to make the Official Visits with GM

Diane. Come to

the fund raising

events, the

Arthritis Walk

and Jingle Bell

runs. Join her

whenever and

where ever you

can. Give her

your ideas or

just get to know

her.
