Thank you for yoursupport and donations.

Thank You I’ve heard so many times that an

exchange is not a year in your life but a life in one year. This sentence only makes sense now, after having the most amazing experience of my life. It is not a trip or a vacation, it is a second life. It gave me the opportunity of gaining a new home, new family, new friends, and learning that the way I lived is not the only way. It makes you richer in a way that has no price. Of course it is scary at first, but it is absolutely worth it. I needed to be brave to do new things and take risks. Nothing can substitute this experience. I’ve lived so many things for the first time this year in Minnesota and I would not ever change it for any reason. It was not just about improving my English skills. It goes so much further than that. I improved a lot as a person; I met myself and grew up a lot as well.

Time to say goodbye is on the way, and I already know that it won’t be easy. It will be hard to leave the people who became very important to me in these past months. I’m so thankful I got the chance to know you all. Thank you for opening your hearts to me and making me feel at home. There are millions of things I’d like to thank you for, but I know that one more “thank you” will never be enough.

I want to give special thanks to my lovely host family, the Haupts for taking me into your house and taking care of me like I am your daughter. Thank you for teaching me so many different things and being so patient. I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me. Thanks to Bae, my host sister from Thailand, for going through this expe-rience with me. Thanks to Pat George, my local coordinator, for being there to help me with any problem I could have had.

I would like to thank everyone in the community for giving me the opportunity to attend school in Carlton. Thank you Mr. Kotsmith for accepting me in this school. I want to thank all my teachers for teaching me so much, not just about the different subjects but about life in general. Thanks to all the staff at Carlton High School, it was really fun to meet you all.

Thank you so much to all my friends. I’m so lucky to have you in my life. Thanks for making me laugh every single day. I’ve known you for a short amount of time but you’ve made a huge impact on my life. I will miss you so much. Come to Colombia and visit me after I get home! I’ll come back to visit as soon as possible.

The time has flown during my stay in the United States. It feels like it was such a short time and I would love to stay longer. This year has been the greatest experience of my life. I will never forget it. I would like to finish with a quote that perfectly describes the way I feel. “You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of lov-ing and knowing people in more than one place.”

Thanks to everyone,Ángela Bohórquez, from Colombia.

Carlton-Wrenshall Father Daughter BallApril 29, 2017!

The Robert Rodd Memorial Costume Hockey Game was played on Saturday, March 4th, at the Four Seasons Sports Complex in Carlton, MN. The red and blue teams were made up of players who were a part of past Carlton, Cloquet and Duluth area hockey teams. Many of the play-ers or their siblings skated in Carlton when Robert Rodd worked in the concession and drove the zamboni at the Four Seasons Sports Complex. To begin the event all the players were introduced, and the national anthem was sung by 14 year old Hannah Erickson, great niece of Robert and Leola Rodd. In between periods there was shoot out con-test for all of the kids in the audience, and a chuck-a-puck contest for audience participants. The second period was a “Glow-in-the-Dark” game using a lighted puck. During the third period, players wore costumes ranging from a tall baby, Teenage Mutant Turtle, Thing 1&2, a Minion, Hanson Brother and cowboy. The game was enjoyed by spectators and players alike. Four Minnesota Wilderness players also came to sign autographs during the dinner. They were also recruited to help with the raffle drawings.

The event volunteers would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions, which helps to make this event a success. Each year the hockey memorial game is increasing in popularity, and is a fun event for adults and kids of all ages. This year the event raised over $2400.00 for

the Robert Rodd Memorial Scholarship Fund. This year the scholarship fund will be presenting $500.00 scholarships to three graduating seniors at Carlton High School.

Thank you to Nikki, Derek and Chelsea Rackliffe, daughter, grandson and granddaughter of Robert and Leola Rodd, for helping with set up, selling tickets, clean up and so much more. Thank you to Carlton School students, Kaitlyn Johnson being the Bulldog Mascot/Greeter, Anna, Johnette and Alisha Broneak. Thank you to Jim Schneider, Zamboni driver, Judy & Bob Tribby, Marlyn and Judy Ninneman, Rocky Wrizidlo, Mark and Nick Larson. Thank you to Rick White and his staff for a great meal. Everyone’s help was very much appreciated by Robert’s family and friends.

Thank you to the Broneak Family for their dedication and support to this event. They are always willing to volun-teer their time and go the extra mile to make this fundraiser a great success.

Thank you to the Four Seasons Sports Complex for their generous use of the Complex building for this scholar-ship fundraising event.

Thank you to the following hockey players for giving their time to participate in the hockey game – Joe Broneak, Tom Anderson, Jeff Leno, Miah Snesrude, Mark Johnson, Steve Douglas, Brian Stevenson, Nate O’Hara, Zack O’Hara, Kellin Lamirande, John Hammitt, Nick Murphy, Jake Bushey, Todd Schramm and Joey Broneak.

Thank you to the stu-dents, parents, teachers, staff and members of the community who have continued to provide input into our facility planning process. This is an important and excit-ing time for Carlton Public Schools. It is a priority for us that everyone in the community stay informed on the pro-cess, understand the information we have gathered and have many opportunities to give input.

A few community members have continued to ask about possible consolida-tion of the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts. I want to make sure that every-one understands that the Carlton School Board is not considering consolidation with Wrenshall. There are many details that must be agreed upon when school districts consolidate. In 2016, the Boards were unable to agree on several of those details, which is the same outcome that has happened many times in our histories. The Carlton School Board is now focused on planning the Carlton district’s future and making decisions for Carlton students.

On March 8th, the community facil-ity committee met again. The committee spent extensive time discussing what is needed for safety and educational quality, and what enhancements could be possible to even further enhance programming for students. Much of the discussion focused on cost estimates and tax impact to property owners. We are also having similar discussions with staff members. The Carlton School Board will take into consideration the committee’s recommen-dations when deciding whether to hold a bond referendum, which could happen as soon as August.

Separately, we are also talking with the City of Carlton about the possible sale of property in the area across the street from

South Terrace Elementary. The City has done extensive testing on various proper-ties in town to identify the best location for a new water treatment plant, and their engineers are recommending the South Terrace property. The School Board wants to cooperate with the City on their important projects while also maintain-ing a focus on what is best for the school district.

The School District is having very important Community engagement Meetings on wednesday, April 5th at 6 p.m. at Carlton High school’s small Gym. A free meal and childcare will be provided. If you are unable to attend the evening meeting, we are also holding a separate community engage-ment meeting at 1:30 p.m. on the same day at the Public House (formerly the Cozy Café) on 214 Chestnut Avenue, Carlton. The event is meant to offer an alternative to senior citizens, but anyone is welcome. Dessert and coffee will be provided at this public meeting.

The focus of these meetings will be for audience members to hear about the facil-ity options (ranging from doing nothing to renovating South Terrace Elementary and building an adjacent new high school) and hear the recommendations from the facility committee members. Again, this is a very important opportunity to understand the options, and especially to give input to the School Board.

Please plan to attend either meet-ing on April 5th! We have had tre-mendous support and participation in the past community engagement meet-ings and we hope to see you all there. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or email me. My contact information is (218) 384-4225 x113 or [email protected].

Library Corner BY JODIe JOHNsON

It is amazing how fast a school year goes! I was so proud of our students at South Terrace this past month as they read a com-bined 1730 books in the month of February. It was great to see all of the hearts lining the hallways of the books that were read.

We also had the opportunity recently to participate in an assembly called Around the World Yo-Yo. This assembly was free of charge to our school and also gave some money back to South Terrace Elementary from the sales of Yo-Yo’s and Yo-Yo strings.

Starting in March on the 28th and 29th our 3rd-5th grade students will be com-pleting their MCA Reading tests. On April 19th and 20th they will be completing their MCA Math tests. While testing can cause some stress for students and teachers alike, it is important to know that there are some strategies that everyone can do to relieve the stress. Some of the best ideas to use during testing are simple in nature such as, getting quality sleep the night before a test, eating a good breakfast, and having positive thoughts about the end result. Keep in mind, the students have been being taught all of the material all year long. Teachers will go over some other skills and strategies to do as well as pos-sible on the tests coming up.

March 30 we will be holding our Kindergarten Orientation Night

for all incoming Kindergarten parents. We will be serving a spaghetti dinner and hav-ing an informational meeting. April 28th will be our Kindergarten Roundup day for the students who will attend South Terrace Elementary next year to come in and see what Kindergarten is all about. We are super excited to meet the next wave of students and parents in the near future!

April 11th is McTeacher Night at McDonald’s in Cloquet, please come out for dinner and support our P.I.E. organiza-tion and their fundraising efforts. Feel free to also swing by and see your favorite teach-ers in action at the McDonald’s that night. They will be working the restaurant and talking with patrons of the restaurant that night, so come on down for food and fun!

As the weather gets warmer and the snow melts we will also be communicating with students about appropriate playground play and dress. It is important for all students to wear shoes for Recess when the snow is all melted. Until then, coats, hats, gloves, and any other winter material should still be

brought to school just in case.

March 31st is the end of Quarter 3. Be on the look out the next week for grade reports. We want to keep the kids working hard to the end, so please continue to support student learning through Quarter 4!
