Holding Fast

2.

From Our Speaker . . .

Hold Fast to God’s Word If you were marooned on a desert island and could have only a single book with

you, what would you choose?

Somebody once asked this question of the famous Christian writer, G.K.

Chesterton. You probably would expect his answer to be the Bible. It was not. Instead,

Chesterton chose “Thomas’ Guide to Practical Ship-Building.”

That makes sense, though, doesn’t it? After all, when we’re trapped on an island,

we want a book to help us get off the island and back home. We want a book to show us

how to be saved.

When you think about it, all of us are trapped on an “I-land” where we know neither our-

selves nor God and are looking for a message telling us help is on the way. Where do we find it?

In the Word of God.

That’s why the Apostle Paul tells the Philippian Christians to be “holding fast to the Word of

life” (Phil. 2:16) as they strive to shine as lights in the darkness for Jesus. He knew that is what

was necessary to keep them strong, effective followers and witnesses of Jesus Christ.

For eighty years Christian Crusaders has been holding fast to the Word of God. In a time

when many peoples’ trust in the power and authority of God’s Word seems to be eroding, we

remain committed to being people who cling to THE BOOK. Our messages are always

biblically-based for a reason – so you may know the Way, the Truth, and the Life and grow in

your relationship with Him. We believe all Scripture is God breathed. It has the power to bring a

person to Jesus and grow him or her into an effective servant who can bring others to Christ.

This is why we continually encourage you to hold fast to God’s Word. It’s a life-giving habit

to open it, read it, study it, and apply it. You will bear fruit that will honor Jesus.

The great Methodist evangelist John Wesley once said that a pivotal point in his life came

when he prayed to become “a man of one book.” What an impact he had for Christ! May we also

be known as “men and women of one book.”Pastor Steve Kramer

From Our Executive Director . . .Light for my Path“Thy Word is a lamp onto my feet, and a light unto my path” Psalm 119:105.

During my childhood my paternal grandfather, Theodore (known as “Ted”), was steadily losing his eyesight. One evening, while driving home from their country church, my grandmother, Theodora (known as “Dora” – I’m not kidding!), commented on the beautiful harvest moon shining brightly in the dark. I, too, was thinking that it was huge and bright, hanging low in the night sky, softly reflecting off the deserted country highway. It was smack dab in front of us, its light guiding us back to town. My Norwegian grandpa replied, “Ya, (pause) where is it t’en?” “Right ahead of you, Ted!” my exasperated grandma replied. It was at that moment, my ten-year-old mind realized how poorly my grandpa could see and I wondered how that worked for him to drive??? This newsletter’s theme encourages us to hold on to God’s Word. How do we do that? Should we memorize verses, or read through the Bible in a year, or tape verses to our walls, or go to church every Sunday? Well…YES! Those are all means, “lamps,” that reveal God to us. According to Psalm 119:105, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my my feet…” God shows us that He has equipped us to walk with Him through life with feet! He tells us to follow Him, and He will be our Guide. His Word is also “a light unto my path.” God shows us that He will illuminate the path, step by step. With God lighting the way, we can proceed with the safest and best ways to pursue life. For when we get to the end of life’s path, when we get home to heaven, we will arrive through God’s provision of Jesus, the Light of the World! The opposite of this analogy, is trying to stumble down a dark path. Have you ever done that? It’s so scary, and usually we incur some injuries. Trusting in God’s light is the opposite of fear. Holding on to God’s Word is trusting in what God says. It means that no matter what happens in life, no matter what turns or obstacles are in our lives, if we look to His Word, we can be guided safely home. Just like that harvest moon, lighting up the dark night and its beams illuminating the road we travelled, so is the Word of God for we Christians travelling on the path of life. The Bible is our guide for living, one of the means by which the Holy Spirit comforts us and tends to our souls as we grow in relationship with Christ. I am grateful for my God-fearing grandparents. I am thankful we all made it home safely that evening so many years ago. I encourage you to hold on to God’s Word – it will equip you for daily living and guide you through this journey of life. The Bible – God’s answer to GPS! Julie Nordstrom
