I am humbled, honored and, very excited to serve as Potentate of Kora Shrine for the year 2021. Although this year is not starting out like we all had planned, Lady Karen and I are eagerly looking forward to the day when we can all once again gather together in our beautiful building for fun and fellowship… hopefully very soon.

I would like to thank Illustrious Sonny Jutras for his leadership last year. He had to make many difficult decisions in order to keep us all safe and Kora on solid ground. I am happy to report, that due to careful financial planning, a little help from our reserves, and a tremendous effort by the Feztival of Trees, we ended 2020 in a good financial position.

We have a great year planned and we can’t wait to get started. Our theme for the year is Having Fun in 21’. Planned events include; Potentate Reception, Masquerade Ball, Ladies of the Table, family fun day at Aquaboggan Water Park, and a new major event - The Kora Shriners Sportsman Expo. Unfortunately, some of the events may be postponed due to CDC guidelines. So please pay close attention to the weekly e-mail communications and the Kora website.

Congratulations to all of the Divan members, Trustees, Units Colonels and Unit Directors on their new appointments and positions. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and committed group leading our Shrine Center. A special welcome aboard to our newest Divan Member, Outer Guard, Ben Weisner.

Membership is an ever increasing concern, especially when the Black Camel calls on so many of our brothers every year. We will be continuing the “Just One” Imperial membership program. If every noble recommends just one new member, we could double our total membership. My goal this year is to increase membership by 5%, 85 new members. That’s a lot of new faces at Kora and would be a welcomed sight. As an incentive, I have reduced the initiation fee to one year’s dues, $85. We have a lot to be proud of at Kora and it would be awesome to share it with new friends.

2020 is behind us, and what a year it was. Many thanks to Illustrious Sir Sonny Jutras and Lady Diane for keeping Kora pointed in the right direction during a difficult time. Congratulations to Illustrious Sir Brent Tanguay and Lady Karen as they take up the reins.

In spite of COVID, there are still many things planned, and we remain hopeful they can happen. Coming up on February 6, we will be doing a Ceremonial in which we hope to initiate 8 candidates who have submitted petitions. Due to current occupancy limits for the building, this will be a combination live and on-line event. In addition, your Membership Committee and the Cash Calendar will again be co-hosting a Cabbage Island Clambake trip. For those who went last year, it was an awesome trip. Stay tuned for more details. For the latest information, make sure you are signed up to receive the weekly Kora Konnections email. It’s easy to do; just go to KoraShriners.org and look under the “Nobles” tab.

For those who may have someone they know who is thinking about joining our ranks, please be aware that the initiation fee has been reduced from $170 to ONLY $85 dollars.

MEMBERSHIP RAMBLINGSBy Paul Gardner, Membership Chair

FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK………by John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder

During this pandemic we have learned a new way to communicate with each other with a computer program called Zoom. We have all been doing a lot of zooming lately, and while it is a good way to virtually see our friends and stay in touch, I can’t wait to actually see every one of you in person and give you a good old fashioned handshake.

When I was asked to join the Divan in 2015 by Illustrious Rick Hersom, I was thrilled just to be asked to such a position of importance. I had my doubts as to whether I could even do the job. I remember someone saying that this wasn’t going to be easy…. Just worth it. And they were right on both accounts. We sure have had our share of difficulties in the past five years and we don’t agree all of the time, but the worth-it part makes it all come together.

It’s worth-it to have dedicated and committed Kora Shriners who create and grow an event like the Feztival of Trees, that has become the standard model in the Imperial event training manual and revered by Shrine Centers all over the United States and Canada.

Worth – it to know that our Kora Shrine Circus has put so many smiles on children’s faces for 67 years.

Worth - it to have a dedicated team of Kora Shriners coordinate the statewide high school Lobster Bowl football game for the past 31 years and make their largest ever hospital donation, during a worldwide pandemic…. and not even play a game!

Worth – It to have this beautiful historic building to care for and call our Shrine Home.

Worth – It to know that I had a part in making some of this happen and even in the smallest way, I have made a difference! So if you are ever privileged enough to be asked to serve on the Divan, or any leadership position, remember, it is not easy…. But it is… Worth – It.

Thank you all again for your trust and faith…… Now let’s go have some fun in 21’

Greetings Nobles:We end a year of 2020 in total bewilderment – of where we

have been and where we may be headed in this New Year. We send Illustrious Potentate Sonny Jutras

and Lady Diane well wishes as they pass the baton along to Illustrious Brent Tanguay and Lady Karen. Ill. Sonny is to be commended on meeting the task head-on and assuring that

Kora remained solid. Kora Shriners, like everyone, faced a full year of challenges with the onset of a worldwide pandemic with COVID.

Illustrious Sir Brent has planned a year of “Fun in ‘21” – let’s hope we can hold the several sessions he has planned. We need to be diligent and remember that events, no matter how well planned, will all be subject to review and guidelines in place prior to happening. Be sure to keep informed by signing up for Kora Konnections email blasts for all the latest information. You can sign up by sending and email to [email protected] .

One last message for all Unit and Club Leaders – and all Nobles in general – the WebFez membership system is an effective tool for Units and Clubs to use – as well as each Noble being able to keep your own personal information up to date. Unit and Club leaders should have a designated Noble to act as an administrator for your group to keep membership rolls current and accurate. Contact the Recorder for any additional information you need.

Stay safe, and stay healthy in the New Year!

If you have a minute, take a look at the new BeAShrinernow.com website. It has been completely redesigned. The petition for membership is now on-line, and makes it even easier to refer new candidates and get them started.

If you know of a Master Mason who would like to join our ranks, get them a petition, or drop us a line at [email protected]. Remember, any Noble who is the first line signer for two or more new Nobles will get next year’s dues paid. It’s easy to send in a referral by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help get things moving and make these men Masons and Nobles.

KORA SANDS FALL 2020

UNITS COLONEL CORNERby Kora Units Colonel Jeffrey Stowell

I am sure that we are all excited to put 2020 behind us. I am humbled and I will admit a little nervous to fill the Units Colonel position for 2021. I am excited to have John Dumas at my side as Lieutenant Colonel. I feel we accomplished great things during our time with the Provost and have great expectations for what we can accomplish in our new positions. John has impeccable attention to detail and is very excited to be back at the Shrine with the support of his Lady Tina. I would be remiss to not mention the amount of support and encouragement I have received from my Lady Sandy. I would like to congratulate all incoming Unit Directors and thank the outgoing Directors who have done so much to keep the Shrine moving forward.

I am looking forward to some relief from the constraints of the Covid pandemic and spending time in fellowship with our Nobles. John and I, along with members of the Divan and our Illustrious Potentate Brent Tanguay look forward to our next scheduled meeting. John and I will be scheduling a round table open discussion meeting in the coming months with all reappointed and newly appointed Unit Directors to outline our plans for the coming year.

Plans are underway for a monthly newsletter, that will hopefully start in March for all Units. I would like to present a forum for Directors to share special events from their Units, sharing stories of special times with their families and keeping everyone in touch during these unprecedented times. While we may not always be together, sharing keeps us in touch.

I am looking forward to a productive year. John and I are always available to any Noble that has thoughts to share, concerns or just to keep in touch.

Congratulations to all incoming Directors, Divan members, and our Illustrious Potentate Brent Tanguay. Looking forward to working together with all of you in what we hope will be a more normal year for the Shrine.

LOG ROLLERSby Ron Guptill, Scribe

Hope to find all in good health. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday under the conditions.

Log Rollers received 2nd place in the Feztival of Trees 2020 Kora Shrine Awards. Congratulations to Nate Rudor for winning the Log Rollers tree.

Lets hope that we can start having fun this summer with parades and get out to support our kids.

We sure miss seeing everyone.

BUCCANEERSby Gene Tanguay, Director

Hi everyone. We hope that everybody is doing well in spite of the changes that the world has faced over the past year.

Sorry we weren’t able to parade for you, Ill. Sir Sonny and Lady Diane. The events we were able to attend were memorable. Thank you for everything you were able to do for Kora. Sorry that the cancel, cancel, cancel became your theme of the year.

Through the technical advancements we were able to attend the Annual meeting and Installation of Officers. Congratulations to Ill Sir Brent Tanguay and Lady Karen. We are looking forward to your year and “Having Fun in 2021.”

Congratulations to the entire Divan for your election or appointment to your respective positions.

The Buccaneers are alive and well and we are all looking forward to hitting the streets once again and look forward to seeing all of you in our travels.

KORA SANDS FALL 2020

207-782-68318

April 16th – 18th, 2021

A new Shrine year brings a new event for the Kora Shriners.

We are pleased to announce the creation of the 1st Annual Kora Shriners Sportsman Expo, Friday, April 16th thru Sunday, April 18th at the Kora Shrine Center. This event is being spear-headed by Brent Tanguay (Potentate) and Chaired by Bernie Fortin (Kora Drifters) and co-Chair Pat Penley (Kora Klowns) with the assistance of 12+ additional nobles and wives.

The event will include Vendor Booths, Food Court, Youth Hunter Safety Course, Moose, Duck and Turkey calling competitions and various Educational Presentations. There will also be additional vendors outside that include ATV’s, Snowmobiles, Wood Carving and more. Our goal is to share the love of the outdoors while providing opportunities for education and exposure to the Shrine. Guest speakers for the weekend will include: Bill Green, Maine Warden Service, Northwoods Law, Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, Trout Unlimited, Lorelei & Tim Winslow (11-year-old Maine Grand Slam Hunter), Dan Waite of Operation Reboot Outdoors and a possible visit from a well-known NASCAR Driver with close connections to the Shriners Hospitals – fingers crossed…

The main fundraising will consist of a Raffle Event with 10-15 Raffle Packages available for ticket purchase. Initial raffle items include: Shrine or Masonic Edition Henry Rifle and a Custom Cerakote Gun refinishing. Several packages are being created to include: Ice & Fresh Water Fishing Packages, Kayaking, Skeet Shooting, ATV, Camping, Backyard Games, Archery, Big Game Hunting, Winter Skiing, Winter Outdoors, and Hiking Packages.

One highlight of the weekend will be a Saturday Night Entertainment Event at the “Back Porch Theatre” (aka Ceremonial Hall) from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. This ticketed event is open to all Shriners, their families, and the general public. Adult Beverages and light snacks will be available for purchase. Entertainment for the evening includes Maine Humorist Gary Crocker, Mary Winchenback of Tirdy Works (Moose Turd Art / TruTV Star), and Mr. Drew and His Animals Too. We may even have a dare/bet that Mr. Drew can’t get his largest snake wrapped around the Potentate’s shoulders and cuddle… and we all know Brent does not like snakes. So, bring your spare change and paper money to entice the Potentate to make a “new friend.”

We invite you to join in the fun of creating this brand-new event. We have many opportunities for you to help make this a success for Kora Shriners.

Please email Bernie @ [email protected].
