MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR The Committee of ICRS would like to thank you for your continued support and send best

wishes for the coming Festive Season

Editor’s Comments: As you will see, this issue has been extended to 28 pages and it is hoped this will continue, in some part to make up for loss of colour. With the extra room, more articles can be included with hopefully two Location Spot’Lights each month…so many locations to fit in before they become out of date. In addition to the many passenger franchise changes, the numbers of ‘heritage’ diesels brought back to life from store are expanding, be they for preservation or frontline service in the case of Cl.37s for EWS, a welcome sight. However more locos are also finding their way to scrap yards. The promising news is that Freightliner are to promote a new Type 5 class, Project Genesis, the first of which is due in 2009. They will be a major departure from current loco design to be built by GE in the USA. By the time you read this issue, Christmas will be round the corner so I wish you all the best and hope Santa brings you what you hoped for !! Location Spot’Light Amendment: Contrary to info in last month’s Location Spot’Light, there is a freight working through B’ham Moor Street. It is a steel flow, 6M15 02.24 Aldwarke – Handsworth (arr 06.36) and 6E53 18:24 return (arr 23.08), so passing Moor Street around 04.45-05.45 and 18.53-19.16. Thanks to Ken Pitt for update. Magazine: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in the magazine. Your travel stories / anecdotes about far flung parts of the railway network, past or present can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, so please consider sharing your knowledge and experiences. Please note that contributions for Out and About Sightings only should be sent to James Holloway, items for European News (and Sightings) to Robert Brown and for Wagon Corner and Light Rail & Metro News to Martin Hall. All other items should be sent to Trevor Roots / Peter Britcliffe. Neatly typed submissions are perfectly acceptable, but if you have a PC with Microsoft Word or Excel, then a document on CD is a bonus or better still e-mail them to the appropriate official. Good quality photographs are always welcome for inclusion in the magazine, colour or black and white clear prints of any railway subject will be considered but preferably high resolution digital photographs via e-mail. To credit members correctly please include your name with any submissions. The latest date for articles / info for the next magazine is Friday 28th December 2007. Items for Out and About Sightings should be sent in to James a few days earlier if possible please. Railway Cuttings Wales: (by Michael Hillier) Dirty train toilets, pricey tickets, delays and poor information about delays top the list of things Welsh train travellers would like to change. A wide-ranging passenger satisfaction survey has highlighted the bug-bears of commuters across the principality. The study, by watchdog Passenger Focus for Wales, asked 670 train travellers to rate aspects of the service they receive in terms of meeting or failing to meet their expectations. It showed that the worst aspect of Welsh trains for most commuters were train toilets, followed by ticket prices, poor delay information and the delays themselves. On stations, facilities, cleanliness, maintenance, staff availability and the general environment all failed to meet expectations. Yet when asked to say what the first thing was that they would change, passengers overwhelmingly said: "Ticket prices." A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said the priorities thrown up by the survey would guide future improvements. Customer services director Ian Bullock, said: "Arriva welcomes this report which reflects and builds on the customer survey Passenger Focus does twice a year. "We are aware of the areas where we need to improve and these are where we continue to target our efforts." Passenger Focus Wales spokesman Simon Pickering said: "The findings highlight areas that are falling short of passenger’s expectations and provide ranked priorities for improvement." He added: "The promise of extra trains for Cardiff is good news and should help reduce overcrowding particularly in the Valley network." The survey was carried out as part of a wider poll of 4,000 train travellers in 10 regions of the UK. It revealed that in terms of customer satisfaction, being a passenger in Wales is neither the pits nor the tops. While Welsh passengers were pleased with many things, including train and station staff, security, ticket queues, the comfort of the seats, train speed, connections and internal train cleanliness, not all regions were so blessed. In the Eastern region, passengers were only happy with staff and security. All the other 16 criteria on 1 trains and 10 on stations failed to meet their satisfaction. Passengers in the East Midlands and South West were also highly unhappy with their service. Yet in Yorkshire and the Humber, the only thing passengers really found to moan about their stations was car parking. In Scotland, happiness similarly outweighed the gripes. The only factor all the regions agreed on, was that train toilets were disliked.

  • Railway Globetrotters by Ray Smith

Peru – September 2007 Peru, a country of 285,220 square kilometres, which is about five times larger than the UK, but with a locomotive allocation less than that of the Bluebell railway. All of the stations I travelled through were walled with gates at the entrances/exits and had security guards. Lima, the capital, the second largest desert city in the world, with a population of around eight million does not have a passenger railway system. The station building is still intact but closed. My first sight of a locomotive was at Arequipa, population 760,000. It was early morning and the one platform station does not have a passenger service. It is only used for charter work and I was waiting for a Great Rail Journeys special to Puno. The disused sidings in front of the platform indicated what once was. Eventually, two locomotives slowly arrived. One was our train loco 752 accompanied by 551, which was detached and moved over to join a few freight wagons at the station entrance. Our train was one coach and I asked the driver if he would do some photo stops and a run past which he agreed to (US dollars helped). The journey was ten hours. We left Arequipa very slowly and soon passed 4 very rusty and dead locomotives (the most I saw together in Peru), the only one identifiable was 655. True to his word the driver did photo stops and one run past over a viaduct (see photo)

    2-8-0 252 Juliaca, 12 Septmber 2007

Towards the end of the journey we came to Juliaca, a small market town where the locals set up stalls on the tracks, unaware that a charter was coming. The scramble was amazing and a bus parked to near the track was reshaped. This delayed us an hour as the driver was interviewed by the police. The rest of the journey was uneventful and in darkness. The next journey was to Cuspo. This train ran four days a week one in each direction. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Once again we passed through Juliaca and a steam locomotive, 252 was parked in a siding, although never to move again under its own power. Continuing on, we were passed by 654 on freight then 753 on the opposite passenger working. Next stop was La Raya, the highest station in Peru at 4343 metres above sea level. We arrived in Cuspo after another ten hour journey and this was our last journey on standard gauge. Next was the journey to Machu Picchu. The station is at Aguas Calientes. This journey cannot be done by road as there are none. We departed Cusco on El Zig-Zag. This is a series of five switch backs to gain height. Another Zig-Zag is encountered half way on the journey. The buses that take you from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu were transported there by rail. Our haul was 352. On the journey locos 353, 356, 481 and 487 were observed as well as dmus 216, 217, 222 and 225. The next day took us to Ollantaytambo, this was the last (almost) Peruvian train seen. The journey was on railcar 216, passing 220 221,223,224 and 225 on route. Loco 484 was also at Ollantaytambo.

BARNETBY STATION Location: OS Map Ref: TA053 098 Barnetby is actually the station for the village of Barnetby le Wold in North Lincolnshire. It lies 9 miles south of the River Humber, 10 miles from Kingston upon Hull on the north bank. Grimsby and Cleethorpes at the mouth of the Humber lie 15 miles to the east beyond Immingham. Scunthorpe is 9 miles to the west and Lincoln is 25 miles to the south. All traffic to and from the ports of Immingham & Grimsby pass through Barnetby on the only line to the east. The route west splits into three 1/2 mile beyond the station at Wrawby Junction. The northern line heads due west through Scunthorpe to Doncaster. The middle line heads south-west to Gainsborough and the southern route heads south to Lincoln.

First TransPennine 185112 heading north-east to Cleethorpes from platform 2, Barnetby, 15 October 2007

Access: Rail: All passenger services stop. Bus: Not known. Road: The station is extremely easy to access from the adjacent major road network 1/2 mile to the north. The M180 from the west connects the M18 to the continuing A180 to Grimsby at Junction 5 from which the A15 heads north across the Humber Bridge to Kingston upon Hull. Taking the southern exit, the A18 (the original trunk road prior to the A180) turn right (west) towards Brigg / Scunthorpe then immediately left towards Barnetby le Wold, signposted for the station. Prior to passing under the line turn right up the station approach and park where possible. The parking near the station is partly reserved for the adjacent pub.

  • Station Layout: The station lies on a roughly south-west / north-east alignment with the entrance to the north-western side. There are no station facilities with the building being in commercial use. The platform layout is simple with two island platforms accessed from above by footbridge. The platforms are numbered 1-4 away from the entrance. Access from the footbridge is by both stairs and ramps, the latter being useful as this extends nearer the north-eastern platform ends from where public access is prohibited. There are simple glazed ‘bus shelters’ on each platform and some standard metal bench seating. In addition to the four through running lines there is a further through loop line and two sidings, which terminate, adjacent to the south-east of platform 4, which continue to connect into the Civil Engineers yard nearer Wrawby Junction.

First TransPennine 185107, approaching platform 3 from north-east as seen from upper second level of ramp, platform 1/2, Barnetby, 15 October 2007

(note overgrown disused platform end) Passenger Traffic: The main operator is First TransPennine Express whose hourly service runs between Manchester Airport and Cleethorpes using Cl.185s. This means there is a passenger service in both directions every half hour. In addition, Central Trains currently operates a two hourly service from Newark North Gate via Lincoln to Grimsby using a single Cl.153. This service will be absorbed into the new East Midland franchise from November 2007.

  • Freight Traffic: There is quite a frequent flow of varying freight traffic, approx 4 an hour, to and from Immingham docks. Locos to be seen are predominantly EWS Cl.60s and EWS and Freightliner Cl.66s. When busy, freight traffic can run through all the platforms, though predominantly the centre platforms 2 and 3. The speed of traffic is not that fast as to prevent wagon numbers being taken if so desired.

    EWS 60020 approaching platform 2 from south-west

Barnetby, 15 October 2007 Best Spotting / Photography Sites: One of the advantages of Barnetby is the unobstructed view in both directions and the fact that semaphore signals still abound. As well as being photogenic they give good warning of approaching trains and which track they’re on, allowing time to get in best position for photos. Being a relatively short station, about 150 yards, it is easy with the warning time to get from end to the other for whichever particular shot you fancy…unless trains come from both directions at once !! Though access to the south-western platforms ends is allowed, as mentioned above, access is barred beyond the footbridge to the north-eastern platform ends but the ramps virtually overcomes this. The ramps require two levels to gain the height, so with the footbridge itself there are several different possible vantage points and angles to take photos. The other advantage of the ramps are that, at the lower first level, they provide cover if its raining whilst still allowing photography. The position of the sun, if there is any, as always will dictate the direction of shooting, but certainly morning is best for trains from the south-west. The accompanying photos were all taken in the afternoon in a three hour period. Facilities: There are no facilities on the station, however there is a pub opposite the entrance and a newsagent on the road from the A18, about 300 yards. There are public toilets at the bottom of the station approach road.

  • Location ‘Spot’light – French Style by Peter Britcliffe

With EWS sending Cl.66s to France under its Euro Cargo Rail subsidiary, anyone wanting to see these locos will either have to wait patiently for their maintenance cycle at Toton or more probably have to nip over the channel. (including me…ed.) With the promised revitalisation of cross channel freight and the Eurotunnel shuttles, there are several classes of British as well as ‘foreign’ locos to be seen. The following article is a guide to a few locations around Calais. At the start of our caravanning holiday to France in early July we spent three days in the Calais area and I managed to see some locos during that time. I didn't spend much time at each location just noting what was visible and moving on. My wife Carol tolerates my obsession but you don't want to push your luck !! I had read an article in Today's Railways Europe issue 131 Nov 2006, page 9 and this gave me the locations to visit. Ferques quarry (off the D231) has a magnificent viewing point, which is well worth a few minutes of anyone's time.

Frethun Location: Michelin France Tourist and Motoring atlas page 2 B1 Frethun yard lies next to the Coquelles channel tunnel terminal. Local services from Calais to Boulogne pass the yard and the nearest station on this line is Les Fontinettes about 2 miles walking distance from the yard. Slightly further away in the opposite direction is Calais Frethun station on the Eurostar line from the tunnel. Given the bad weather we’ve had this year I would recommend stout rain and footwear if you are considering either option. Directions from car ferry: From the ferry terminal the road travels around an industrial zone before splitting into three directions. Take the right one towards Boulogne, the A16 and leave this after a short distance at junction 14, signed for D940 and D304. Follow roundabout underneath the motorway and take the next right towards Frethun. After two roundabouts the road travels over the yard and you can get a clear view of where the locos are standing. Turn right along Marais de Coquelles and right again into Route de Frethun, the D246. The yard is straight ahead and there is off road parking on the right. Be warned however. There is a security post on the corner where the road bends sharply right and the two guards were very quickly on the scene. I managed to see a couple of shuttles here but it was obvious even with my grade 8 (failed) O level French from 1965 that I was not welcome here. So, I drove further along the road, parallel to the yard, parked here and was able to view the locos present. Locos: Cl.66 and 92, as well as French loco Cl. BB67000, BB75000 and BB22200 and TGV passing. The Cl.66s are working in the area and stable at Frethun between duties Photographs: After my brush with authority I did not feel it was a risk worth taking as this was the first day of a caravan holiday and I wanted to see more of France and not the inside of the local gendarmerie. The high fencing around the site is similar to Cheriton in Kent and probably gets in the way of a clear shot. However I continued along this road and where it begins to turn away from the yard there is what appeared to be a disused entrance to a depot and surprisingly given the tight security encountered earlier there was ample space to park and no fence at all. 66049 was stabled here for all three days I spent in the area and a clear shot of it was possible.

Channel Tunnel Entrance Traffic passing through the tunnel can be viewed from a road overbridge, on the D243, which runs parallel to the motorway. Directions from car ferry: Continue past the turn off for Frethun and take junction 11 on the right. At the end of the slip road turn right and immediately right again towards the line. Parking is possible on the right just before the bridge.

    17

  • Locos: Eurostars, shuttle locos and Cl.92s. Photographs: This is probably not such a good idea given the level of security around the channel tunnel site. I had only been standing on the bridge a few minutes when a security van appeared. It passed without stopping but I am certain I got some close scrutiny as it passed. On an earlier visit here in 2002, I spent several hours observing the traffic and no security was visible but times have changed since then.

Caffiers Location: Michelin France Tourist and Motoring atlas page 2 B2 Caffiers is a small station on the line from Calais to Boulogne. Only three trains a day stop here in early morning and late afternoon. Directions Caffiers is on the D231 from Guines to Marquise and the station is about a mile from the village. Guines is a ten minute drive from Frethun and has an excellent camping site where we stayed for three nights. From Guines the road passes under the high speed rail line from the tunnel and there is space to park off road on the left just before the bridge to observe this traffic but once again chain link security fencing is present. Just before the barriered crossing turn left into the station yard and park behind the rather shabby station building. Locos: Class 66, BB75000, BB67000 on local Calais-Boulogne trains, TGV. The class 66 locos carry stone from the quarry at Ferques to Caffiers. Some continue onwards to Frethun but those destined for Longeuil stop here to reverse. When I was there in July the class 66s were replaced here by pairs of BB75000 locos for onward travel via Boulogne, Abbeville and Amiens. Photographs: Clear views of locos in the yard and stabled in the station were possible here although the overhead wire gantries could impair some views.

    18

  • Ferques Quarry Location: Michelin France Tourist and Motoring atlas page 2 B2 The quarry is situated on the right hand side of the D231 and there is a viewing point with ample off road parking and well worth a short visit. With binoculars, the quarry shunting locos can be seen as well as the wagons being loaded. Directions: From Caffiers, turn left and go over the crossing towards Marquise on the D231. On the left at Landrethun le Nord there were wagons in a siding and as we were leaving the area to travel further south I noticed 66243 passing the wagons on the way to the quarry. There was a narrow road off to the left here and so closer investigation would have been possible if I had not been towing a caravan. At a T junction turn right, still on the D231 and the viewpoint is clearly signed on your right after a short distance. From the viewpoint if you go back towards Guines you can turn left off the main road towards the village of Ferques and if you take the first left here you soon reach a crossing where, to the left, the loaded wagons can be seen awaiting collection. Be very careful as there are no warning signs as you very quickly reach the crossing. Not being particularly interested in wagons I didn’t test the security here but they were about a locos length from the crossing Sightings: July 9: Frethun (17.00) Cl.66: 66038/045/049/208/241/243/246. WAGON NEWS: EWS has secured a £100m deal to move coal for Drax Power Ltd and EDF Energy. The ‘Enterprise’ network is still doing well and is helped by the contract it has with the MoD to transport essential stores around the rail system. The former YEA ‘Perch’ long welded rail wagons (DB979XXX) are being converted for international use and are numbered in the 70 4842 0xx series. Although there are very few brake vans left on the rail network they are still proving useful as EWS has been using a former ‘Shark’ 20t plough brake van DB993840 for brake control duties at Plymouth Friary. They are fitted with NACO swing link bogies and a brake wheel on the sole bar. They are both fitted with four brake shoes acting on the inner face of the wheel and AAR1A type roller bearings. The three-piece hood can be opened from either end, which makes them easy to load and un-load and they have gained the nickname ‘Nissan Huts’.

Germany The ICE trains from Koln Bonn Flughafen to Berlin currently use the ‘freight only’ east to north curve from Vingst to Koln Kalk as they avoid Koln Deutz low level and run non stop to/from Dusseldorf. From December 9th they are routed via Deutz low level again so the curve will revert to being freight only, get it while you can. Ex-works electric 120116 has been renumbered to 120201-9 and will be dedicated to the Hamburg to Rostock Hanse Express services from the 9th December, expect further re-numberings to follow. Class 103 On the 9th November 103245 worked unassisted on EC114 and IC2017, out and back, between Munchen and Stuttgart. I have enquired with a friend of mine within DB regarding this working and so far he has responded that the roster was known in advance and a driver with traction knowledge of a 103 was especially sought to cover it. If I get any further information that this is now a booked turn or just a one off I will let you know.

The withdrawl of 25215 & 25224 sees the end of Jacquemin locos with Fret, (However there still is one Monday to Friday freight train pair between Aix-les-Bains and Annecy booked for a Chambéry BB25150) the only classes of electric loco in use with Fret are now 7200, 22200, 26000, 27000, 36000 & 37000. Luxembourg Having spent most of 2007 dumped in the roundhouse, 4008 has been returned to traffic, being spied on various services on the 17th November.

Portugal On the first day of the month 1422 headed the 09:15 Porto to Pocinho, returning with the 15:31 ex Pocinho (it was noted again on these trains on the 4th November and 1455 leading the 17:15 Porto to Pocinho. Noted out again, this time on the 7th was 1422, it had quite a busy day starting with IR861 the 07:25 Campanha to Pocinho followed by IR868 the 11:14 Pocinho to Regua, dropping on to IR870 the 12:47 Regua to Campanha. On the 20th 5603 headed out on IC670 the 09:05 Faro to Lisbon Oriente, 2603 topped IC572 13.20 Lisbon Oriente to Faro, 2629 powered IC543 the 13:18 Lisboa Santa Apol. to Covilha, 5605 handled IC513 the 13:28 Lisboa Santa Apol to Guarda and 1947 worked IC694 the 14:10 Lisbon Oriente to Evora. Stabled at Lisboa Santa Apol on this day were 1186, 1427 and 2608. On the 27th 2626 worked the 13:20 Oriente to Faro, presumably it will return on 09:05 from Faro on the 28th as diagrammed. I have seen reports of this loco being overhauled in October for CP Carga. Although it has been fitted for MU working, it has not been speed limited to 100km/h, inside the cab it is clearly marked PV-160km/h and CV-100km/h.
