Lighting Chanuka Candles When I’m Out for Dinner

December 2016 - Kislev 5776

N e w s a n d V i e w s f r o m t h e Y o u n g I s r a e l o f P l a i n v i e w

R. Sheshet said: “A lodger is obligated in ner Chanuka.” R. Zeira said: “At first,

when I would visit the house of Rav, I would share the costs with the host. After I

was married, I concluded that now I certainly don’t need [to light], as [she] is light-

ing for me at my home…” (T. Shabbat 23a)

From the above Talmudic discussion we learn two important Halachot about

traveling on Chanuka. The first that a guest may participate in the lighting of his

hosts. The second is that another may light for someone in his home. But what

happens when I am out during the time to light candles and won’t return until late?

Certainly if a family member is in the house, I can count on them to light at the

proper time. What if my house is empty? Would it be preferable for me to light

with hosts or wait until I arrive home?

The simple answer is that, based on the Talmud, Chanuka Candles are a require-

ment for the house, and therefore I cannot light where I am eating. This is the po-

sition of the R. Yaakov ben Asher who concludes (Tur 677) that a home is defined

by where you sleep. So it would be better to light when you get home, even if it’s

late. R. Moshe Issurles in his commentary on the Tur notes that some disagree and

hold that you should light at the right time where you are eating, even if you will

be sleeping somewhere else.

The argument seems to be based on definition of dwelling. Is our “home” for

Chanuka candles defined by where we eat or where we sleep.

Another ramification to this question would be students in a dorm or someone

staying in a hotel. Should they light in the dining room where they eat or where

they sleep. In Yeshiva, R. Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l poskened that we light in our

dorm lobbies (we couldn’t light in our rooms for safety concerns). Nevertheless, R.

Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (quoted in Mikraei Kodesh p. 100, n. 101) allowed stu-

dents to light in either their dorm lobby or the cafeteria.

Ideally, one should light where one sleeps. However, if one will be arriving

very late and there is opportunity to light where you are eating, you may do so.

Remember, if you are eating before you light, you need to put some reminder in

place to ensure that you will not forget. This can be fulfilled by asking a friend to

remind you or even setting an alarm on your phone.

Page 3 The Shaliach

As the days grow shorter and winter approaches, we’re approaching one of the most family- and children-

centered holidays of our calendar. We light candles and come together for food, games and songs, but Chanu-

kah – while conjuring images of latkes, jelly donuts, dreidels, and the miracle of the oil – really commemo-

rates the wondrous military victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks and the one small jug of oil that man-

aged to keep the menorah lit for eight days.

When we light the candles on Chanukah, one additional candle each night, we are, in effect, setting up a

public display. Placing our menorah in a front window – or in a spot likely to be seen from the street – we are

making a public statement: we announce our thanks that by the courage of the Maccabees, our Temple was not

profaned. Thanks to the miracle of the oil which lasted for eight days, our unique identity was preserved.

Public statements are important, but so, too, are private affirmations. Showing the world that we cherish

our history and traditions is important; but so, too, is demonstrating this same fact to ourselves and to our fam-

ilies. The real miracle of Chanukah is one of Jewish commitment. If the Maccabees, in their day, served as

role models, then we, in our own day, must be role models as well. It is only in this way that we will keep the

miracle of Chanukah alive.

As we light each candle on our menorah, let us also ignite a spark within ourselves and our families as we

seal our commitment to keeping the miracle alive.

Wishing you a chag sameach!

OPPORTUNITIES TO CELEBRATE

YOUR SIMCHAS

AND HONOR LOVED ONES !

Last year, 24 leaves were added to the Tree of Life in the lobby, celebrating bar and bat

mitzvahs, weddings, the birth of children and grandchildren. Thank G-d, many of us have

had simchas this past year, so why not take this time to donate a leaf ($72) and add to

the growing Tree of Life !

Also, we have one major Special Gift still available – the Sandek’s Chair on the bimah –

and we have lowered the donated price to $5,000. If you are interested in making this

Special Gift in honor or in memory of a loved one, please see me. It is truly a wonderful

opportunity.

Hope in HaShem; strengthen and fortify your heart, and hope in HaShem.

Chodesh Kislev Tov, with the hope that the lights of Chanukah will usher in brightness to our

lives, which have recently witnessed such difficult times, especially for our fellow Jews in

Israel. Even during the darkest days, may we be able to recognize the good and the light that

surrounds us and connects us to our brothers and sisters in hope.

Our Mikveh is an independent organization that depends upon the support of its community,

and on behalf of our Board, we greatly appreciate those who responded to our Rosh Hasha-

nah appeal. All funds go towards the costs of our everyday operations and facilities improve-

ment. We also wish to acknowledge the generous support of our MALI 365 club members,

who help to sustain our Mikveh every single day. As of this writing, we have 20 member

families, but please remember that it’s only $1 a day, and it’s never too late to join.

We would like to thank the amazing women of our community who have been volunteering

their efforts as attendants at our Mikveh, now that Tirtsa Gil, our wonderful main Shomeret is

working part-time. We also express our sincere thanks to Avital Weissman for all of her help

in reviewing our Mikveh policies and for offering training for all of our shomrot.

We are in the process of planning a concert for the first Motsei Shabbat in January to benefit

our Mikveh. Please save the date, January 7th--more information will follow. Another Spa

Night for ladies-only is also being planned for early spring—most probably on Saturday

night, Feb. 4th. Be on the look-out for a Tzedakah Box Design template that will be e-mailed

and will be an opportunity for artists young or old to create a whole new look that will be

used on new boxes for the Mikveh. About 20 years ago, MALI tzedakah boxes were distrib-

uted to families in our Plainview community. If it’s been a while since you've had yours emp-

tied, please contact Ed Ehrlich.

We are always looking for help to plan and work on the committees for these various events,

and we welcome your participation. Please contact us if you are able to volunteer.

Happy Chanukah to all, and thank you for your continued support,

Ruth Lorbert and Janet Akhavan
