April showers bring May flow-ers. So we are told. That means
spring is here. Springtime is plea-sure-time. We feel and enjoy thebeauty of nature. As we lookaround, we see nature putting on anew face and that reflects happi-ness. To see nature returning itsblossoms of fragrance is to believe“God’s in His heaven, all’s rightwith the world.” Some do not see itthat way. Maybe they can’t. But, ifwe can believe in optimism andenthusiasm, it helps us to look upand not down. Things may not al-ways be at their best. If, however,we can make them look a littlebrighter, we have done somethingworthwhile.
Springtime brings together twoimportant festivals. One is Pass-over and the other is Easter. Themiracle of resurrection and thefreedom of life go hand in handwith the rebirth of nature. Thetime place for Jesus’ resurrection
from the dead was in the spring ofthe year, when anemones and wildflowers along the Judean hillswould be bursting into bloom. When Moses led the enslavedpeople of Israel out of Egypt to thePromised Land, it may also havebeen springtime.
All of that suggests hope. Fromwhat appears dead, new lifeemerges. Hope is an action of cre-ativity, which only God has thepower to bring to fruition. Pass-over and Easter are not man-madeschemes to shock and bewilder theworld. They are wonders andmiracles originating with God.They are given to restore our faithin knowing that nothing stays thesame but that life always is chang-ing and being transformed. Themood of this festival time compelsus to break the spell of apathy toseek the light and love that dispelsthe shadows of doubt and fear.
February was a traumatic pe-riod for our Website and our
mass emailing list. On January 25,we received a message from ourformer Web host, that we had30 days to vacate their system, itwas being shut down, just what Ineeded in the midst of a busy 2011start up! Well, we did get the trans-fer to a new Web host completed, but I’m still struggling with ournew mass email list. The FridayWebletter now has 1,200+ subscrib-ers and I have no way to determinehow many are not yet getting theweekly emails from the list. If youare subscribed and not yet receiv-ing the weekly Friday Webletters, please send a message to<[email protected]>. How doyou know if you are subscribed?
When I transferred the subscriberemail list to the new Mailman mail-ing list, you would have received aWelcome message; on March 1, youwould also have received themonthly password reminder mes-sage. If you received both of thesemessages, but still aren’t gettingthe Friday Webletter, I need toknow. I may need to change to yetanother emailing program, if ourproblems aren’t resolved soon. Ihave started posting the currentWebletter on the Website, so thosewho have difficulty reading theWebletter or who didn’t receive it,can view it via a Web browser, goto <http: / /sahibshr ine.org/webletter.htm>, this page will be up-dated each week when the newWebletter is emailed.

Potentate’sNotes
Nobles,
April is Circus month at Sahib; the event Shriners are mostly associatedwith for our kids. This gives us a chance to show off our name and what wedo for our kids. We bring 1,400 children to the Circus every year at nocharge. You can all be proud of that fact.
This month also brings our ladies and nobles luncheon with the outstandingperformance of Sahib’s Concert Band, which is under the direction of C.Jarrett Miller, Past Potentate of ZemZem. Ill. Sir Miller has come to callSahib his home and has produced wonderful sounds with this very profes-sional ensemble.
This too is the month for Sahib’s Spring Picnic. Always a good show for ourmembers, and, I am certain one of the Divan will surprise us with enter-tainment he has planned.
We really do as much in a month as some other Shrines do in a year—whotells us that? All our visitors!
We must not forget membership. Get your friends and family interested inMasonry and the Shrine. We will have our Ceremonial in August this yearso please try and enlist a new member so we can continue to be the bestShrine in Shrinedom.
Remember the Divan is working for you, the noble, so please let us knowwhat you like, as well as what you don’t; we are always available to talkwith you. We try to keep everyone happy.
Remember to call a Brother you haven’t seen for a while; I’m sure both youand he will appreciate it. God bless the Shrine and God bless America.
Yours in the Faith,
Tom Millaway, Potentate

As I write this article, I am preparing to enterMoffitt Cancer Hospital in Tampa. As you read
this article, I will have finished my treatments andhopefully back among the active Shriners I havepledged to serve.
I wish to thank all those who sent cards, andprayers for my successful treatment. It means a lotand helps keep up one’s spirits.
Well here it is April. The spring baseball season isa memory, as is the Sarasota County Fair and all theother activities that happened in March. I reallymissed the Imperial Sir’s official visit. I always lookforward to that great event for Sahib Shriners.
But this month we have a CIRCUS! We have beenpreparing for this event for over two months and nowwe can see the fruits of our labor. Enjoy the Circus,
bring your friends and neighbors. Watch the childrenas they watch the different acts and stunts of theclowns.
Membership continues to be a primary concern ofall Shriners. Our Ambassadors have volunteered tobe a part of the membership team. With an Ambassa-dor in each Masonic lodge, we will have a presencethat will not just be another “Here come the Shriners, trying to steal our members,” but Shriners who par-ticipate in lodge activities and help the lodges getnew members, participate in lodge degrees, and raisefunds. You don’t have to be an Ambassador to do thesethings; all you have to do is participate in your BlueLodge as a member and as a Shriner. Keep up thegood work and continue to support your Blue Lodgeand Sahib Shriners.
It is good to be back after a lengthy illness. Whatever germ was out there found an unlucky host in
me. Thank you all for your cards, prayers and phonecalls.
Well, we are finally into spring and looking for-ward to the Circus, under the big top at RobartsArena for a three-day stint.
Baseball spring training is over after a bumpystart with concessions under the direct managementof the Pirates Organization. We all hope that therough start will turn into a smooth transition. We canall pride ourselves on having two quality clubs, Mana-
tee and Gulf, with professional leaders and workerswho do quality work to make things run smoothly.
After all the hard work, we can breathe a sigh ofrelief and some of us can enjoy the spring potentate’scruise to the friendly Caribbean.
March also brought the annual ImperialPotentate’s visit on Thursday, March 10 and we hopethis went as expected.
This is all for now and I hope April brings everyonea few flowers so we can all stop and smell the springscents. God bless America.
Nobles, I want you to know that after the first twomonths of this year Sahib temple is doing very
well.In February, we enjoyed a banner month in our
restaurant and lounge. We are so blessed to have theGrand Masters and their entourages from all differentparts of our middle and eastern states choose Sahib fortheir winter pilgrimages. We also have the Potentatesfrom these same states come for their winter gather-ings. The Divan and the Sahib nobility thank yousincerely for coming to Sahib for your winter meetings.
On April 8, 9, and, 10, we will feature our ShrineCircus. This year’s circus will be a three-day event. We
will have three shows on Friday the 8th and on Satur-day the 9th and this year for the first time, two showson Sunday 10th. And more great news; the shows will beat Robarts on the grass to the right of the arena, andright on Fruitville Road. Nobles, come and support yourtemple, you will enjoy our circus.
We still have approximately 200 nobles that havenot paid their dues, although we are somewhat ahead oflast year, we are always concerned, and we do not wantto lose any Sahib nobles. Check your status, maybesome of you have forgotten to pay them.
Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

As I look back at the seventeen Pirates games weworked I must thank each and everyone who
stepped forward and helped. Not knowing what thisseason would bring everyone went with the flow andwe hope had some fun doing it. Very proud of ALL!
It was different this year working for the Piratesand their new staff. There were changes in the layoutof Pirates Grill and Bull Pen, plus we were asked towork the Bucco Bar & Grill. The cash registers were
new to us all and our members did a great job with allthat had to be learned.
Thanks also to our members who worked theSarasota County Fair. We will have members work-ing the Sahib Circus on April 8, 9 and 10. We coulduse extra volunteers for this event.
Our luncheon is on Friday, April 1, and then April 12we are hosting the Birthday/Anniversary DinnerDance. We hope you will attend both. Have Fun!
Greetings! Gloriously, I have seen the first sign ofspring and if you missed it, you are in luck as it
is still around. Take a short trip out to I-75 and youwill note that there are more RVs towing cars andtrailers heading north, than heading south. A posi-tive sign that spring has sprung. Now don’t take thatthe wrong way, as we will certainly miss our Shrineflock of snowbird brothers and sisters when theydepart. It is simply a sign of that time of year. Havea safe trip home folks and a wonderful spring andsummer, and a safe return to us.
I must make a comment about the February 27Motor Corps Spaghetti Dinner and that is, the MC’schief chef and restaurateur, Wally (Red Dog) Lacy, asI had predicted, would arise from his knee replace-ment healing bed to come and supervise this presti-gious, signature event. Today Wally is almost totallyhealed and is out and about. Now that wasn’t awarning or anything like that—just an observation.A large congrats for your perseverance to overcomeWally. Great to have you back with us.
Howdy, y’all! Here’s the latest from “Behind theOuthouse”.
Our Annual Hillbilly Hoedown was Saturday,March 5. Yee Haw! Everone had lots a fun. Goodvittles and good music by the Brass Rings and ofcourse some good music by our new Cuzzins. SamiPhillips was voted Possum Queen and new cuzzin, JohnKoch was voted Possum King! Photos on page 13.
Did ya hear, a hitchhiker in the hills was picked upby a hillbilly who pulled a gun on him and orderedhim to take a bottle of corn moonshine from the glovecompartment of the car.
“Drink it,” the hillbilly ordered, waving the gun.The hitchhiker took a swallow from the bottle, gasped, gulped, blinked, wept, gagged, choked, shuddered, squirmed and twitched.
“All right,” the hillbilly said. “Now you take thegun and force me to take a drink.”

March was a busy month starting out on the 5thwith Mike and Kim Harrell being installed as WorthyPatron and Matron, respectively, in the BradentonChapter of Eastern Star. Congrats to them both fortaking on such rewarding and important positions inour Masonic family. For those of us who attendedtheir lovely installation, we learned that the FIRSTand ONLY line that Mike is required to memorize, is“Yes Dear!” He said that he already had that lineperfected as it was usually the last thing out of hismouth when conversing with Kim, who, by the by, isthe MC’s official photographer. Congrats to you bothand have a great year
On the 10th we escorted our Imperial PotentateGeorge A. Mitchell from I-75 and Fruitville Road toSahib for our weekly men’s luncheon. A rousing re-ception befitting of his position confronted him uponhis arrival and a festive luncheon followed. Thankyou for your visit Imperial Sir.
The 12th found us out in Arcadia doing our paraderoutine along with several other Sahib units andclubs. This is one of our favorite parades as it is aboutsix blocks long and we don’t have to worry about ourmotorcycles overheating. It is always a good time asthe folks are always very appreciative. I really wishthey wouldn’t take aim before throwing those beadsor whatever they are—I think it is strung kernels ofcorn.
OK Gary, I am trying to keep this to the bearessentials. Explanation: I was out of town on thedeadline date for this issue and our editor GarySchweinshaupt was gracious enough to insert thisarticle at the last minute—as long as I kept it shortand to the point. I really am trying Gary, but I havea “motor mind.” Once in gear it is hard to stop it. Andforget that “on a dime” thingy.
On March 19, we joined the Widow’s Sons for ourannual trek to the Masonic retirement home in St.
Pete. This has become a very large event and is a timewhen Masonic organizations from all over the staterally to offer support to the home. The event is open toanyone and if you have not been to see this facility andits wonderful setting on the water, it is an excellentexample and inspiration of how we take care of our own.
And of course, on the 20th, we engaged in ourAnnual Motor Corps fund-raising Poker Run. Onceagain the turn out was great and the event was a hugesuccess. Our President Eric Bock asked that I thankall of the members and their ladies, and friends of theCorps that made this all happen. Large kudos to Daveand Rita Bell for ram-rodding the Wagon-of-Cheersales, as well as to all who helped out with setting upand selling the tickets. Great teamwork by all. If youmissed this star-event, it was a terrific time, soconsider attending next year. You will not regret it.
April is looking to be a rather slow month in theevents category. Many MC members who are also WSmembers, will be joining the Widow’s Sons in attend-ing one of their annual sanctioned events in Leesburgon the 7th through the 10th. This also coincides withthe Leesburg Annual Bike Fest so should, once again,be a good time for all.
Speaking of ‘fun times,’ let’s see who is going to becelebrating a birthday and/or an anniversary thismonth. Once again, if you should be listed below as acelebrant, and are not, please let me know and I willrectify the problem. OK, here we go… April Birthdays:Lady Jan Dahlberg, 21st; Lady Barbara (Bball) Hart,6th; Lady Carol Hubbard, 21st; Lee (Hacker) Jones,8th; Tony (Tony P.) Malinoskie, 20th: Bryon (Short-cut) Pullman, 24th; Lady Joni (Jupi) Steelman, 16th;and Joe (Stroker Joe) Stella, 27th. Anniversaries:Terry (Bubba Lee) and Brenda Meadows, 24th.
And those, my friends are my predictions for themonth of April. Well, at least that’s my story, and I’msticking to it. Have a great month.
We invite everyone to our club events in April! Please phone 1st VP Bob ‘Mixmaster’ Somerville
(941) 429-6433 for the time and place of our MonthlyMixer and your menu choices and reservations. Wewind up the month on Monday the 21st at our BakedHam and Pineapple Picnic at 11:00 a.m. in the NorthPort Dallas White Park picnic pavilion. Please regis-ter with Sam Cohen (941) 276-0329 or President JackWatson (941) 240-5737 for reservations and neededcontributions.
Our best news—the North Port Shrine Club raised$3,100 in our February Hospital Days drive, a whop-ping increase over our $2,383.48 total last year! And ournumbers continued to swell at our recent events aspictured. We installed new members Paul Ruksznis(“Rock-sha-niece”) and Stefanos J. Loisou. Visitors andguests included President Jack Watson’s twin brotherJim with wife Jean plus sisters Dottie and Barbarawith her husband Steve. Also visiting, Charter MemberBob and Betty Adams’ son Gary with wife Dottie.
Each Tuesday 7:30 a.m., rain or shine, 52 weeks ofthe year, we breakfast at the Olde World Restaurantin North Port for info, fun and fellowship. We inviteany Mason or Shriner with their lady and/or friendsto join us for some friendly banter, and civic projects. And please continue to bring your old magazines withblackened or cut out address labels to our Tuesdaybreakfasts for 2nd VP John Brophy and his gang tocontribute to medical waiting rooms and fire sta-tions.

News from the Ag Building! Those nobles whoworked shifts during Hospital Collection Days
were thanked for their efforts with a hamburger/hotdog picnic on February 21 held at the Ag Buildingpavilion. Cooking and serving was provided by Key-stone Kops and their ladies, who by the way havebeen a busy group. They meet monthly for “FunNight” at local restaurants, with their ladies, tosocialize. Also, they participate in the monthly “Is-land Nights” in downtown Venice. The stores stayopen late and the KOPS patrol the streets and inter-act with the shoppers. Everyone enjoys it and it
provides favorable publicity for the Venice ShrineClub and Shrinedom, in general.
Lastly, the Venice Shrine Club holds its monthlyluncheons at the South Venice Yacht Club, 4425 YachtClub Drive, Venice on the 3rd Tuesday of each month(except July and August) at 11:00 a.m. for socializingwith lunch at noon. All Shriners are invited to join us.Good food and an interesting program are guaran-teed! Please try to give VSC President Jim Jensen acouple days advance notice at 739-9324, if possible.
70% of those under 50 believe that Social Securitywill not be able to pay them a benefit when theyretire. In reality, the likelihood that any living
American’s Social Security benefits will not be paid tothem when they retire is about the same probabilitythat there will be no U.S. government at that time.”
So here’s our April quiz: What national columnistrecently observed (after admiring Winston Churchill’swartime public realism in “blood, toil, tears and sweat”):“Americans too honor leaders who speak hard truths, ifsometimes only in retrospect. But just as often, wepunish candor. Walter Mondale thought he was doingthe right thing in 1984 by announcing that if elected,he would raise taxes; he lost 49 states, and RonaldReagan raised taxes 11 times. George H.W. Bush agreedto a budget deal that laid the groundwork for a decadeof prosperity—for which Bill Clinton got the credit, having bounced Bush from office.”
The first non-club member to send the correct an-swer to the above e-mail address wins a free Tuesdaymorning breakfast for two with the North Port ShrineClub.

Can pull-tabs comprise a large part of revenue forShriner’s Hospitals? Whatever we collect is for thebenefit of our Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. What an easy way to raise funds for the “WheelChair Repair Fund.” I must admit, Lady Sonja andI consume very little in liquids that come in a can. However, we “deputize” many of our friends to collectthem in any way possible. They are delivered to usfrom Wisconsin, Illinois, British Columbia, Califor-nia, Germany and as far away as Africa. One of ourfriends actually makes the rounds picking tabs out of
recycling bins before they get picked up, with permis-sion of course. They all add up, it only takes 1,267tabs to make a pound. So, the next time you go to anaffair, keep a lookout for pull-tabs! You will be help-ing a child be mobile.
Remember: Support your Shrine, “Collect pull-tabs” and keep a child in your heart.

To all Sahib Shrine nobles: In this column I wouldlike to draw to your attention that your PR Com-
mittee now consists of Jimmy Lontz, Jim Smith andyours truly Harold Eady. This same committee haspreviously handled PR for Sahib and we are delightedto be handling it again.
About three years ago, a request for PR servicesform was introduced by the PR Committee. The pur-pose of this form is to assist clubs, units and/or theSahib Divan to get PR help for events for which theymay feel the public should be made aware. Theseforms are kept in the PR mail tray in the Sahib office,or you can download an Acrobat version at: <http://sahibshrine.org/requestpr2011.pdf>. So, if you would
like some PR assistance on a particular event, pleasecomplete one of these forms, return to the same mailtray and the PR committee will assist you as best theycan.
The PR committee has quite an extensive medialist of contacts. When we issue a Sahib Press releaseor a PSA, we don’t always know which newspaper/TVstation or radio station may have used the material. So we ask when you see or hear of a news itemconcerning the Sahib Shriners, please cut it out ormake note of it and put into the PR mail tray.
We look forward to helping Sahib get good PublicRelations.
Unit Councilby Fred Phillips, President, [email protected]
This will be the first article in a series concerningSahib’s Unit Council. Having accepted the ap-
pointment as president of Sahib’s Unit Council forthis year, I will be writing a series of articles in hopesof sparking some interest and support for the council’sactivities. There is no guarantee for an article everymonth but there will be one whenever there are itemsof interest to our units and their members. My pri-mary concern will be reviving participation in theUnit Council and coming up with new or revisedmethods for enriching the treasuries of interestedunits. This in turn could result in benefits to theunits, Sahib Shriners and Shrinedom in general.
First, it may be useful to provide a little back-ground on the Unit Council and its purpose. Thecouncil was initially formed in 1990 at the directionof Potentate Lee Stewart. According to its bylaws thepurpose was to unite the units into one body whichwould provide a more efficient and effective workforce than the individual units could do workingseparately. Individual units could maintain theirautonomy, continue to direct those activities thatwere unit oriented in scope, and could keep for them-selves the earnings there from.
From its beginning, the council functioned suc-cessfully while supplying workers for temple wide

activities such as bingo (which was held on Sundays),the dog track openings, and the circus concessions.Funds generated by these endeavors were allotted tounits according to their participation. Initially thesefunds were to be used for specified purposes whichwere: (1) convention travel, (2) parade equipment andfloats, (3) parade uniforms and instruments, and (4)donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children, thehospital transportation fund or building fund.
As time went on council meetings also evolved intothe only forum for units to get together and discuss indetail a variety of subjects for the good of the order. On occasion Potentates also used this forum to pro-vide details and insights into their programs andactivities. In 1996, the bylaws were revised to, amongother things, incorporate such forums and allow unitsto use funds earned in council activities, as theydesired.
In recent years, the Unit Council essentially fadedinto the sunset. The Sunday bingo has gone and for
valid reasons the Tuesday bingo sessions held noware out of the question. Handling of the recyclingbins, added later, became impracticable. The circusconcessions went away and now the main source oftemple wide income for the council is the annual dogtrack opening. Potentate Tom Millaway is awaresome units are hurting financially and he is willing tohelp in any way he can as long as we make thenecessary efforts. In that regard, one of the mainitems on the council meeting agenda in February wasmoneymaking ideas. We discussed a few methods andwill continue to look for new methods and take a freshlook at old methods. So please, I ask all members togive this some thought and present your ideas to yourunit heads or, accompany them to our monthlymeeting and give the council your inputs. All sugges-tions will be considered. By working together I feel wecan again make the council a useful and constructivebody of Sahib Shriners.

Our annual Greeter picnic will be held at OakwoodManor on April 16. Plan to attend this afternoon
of fellowship and great food. Our next parade is April 24 in Palmetto; we will
car pool from Sahib Shriners. Let’s have anothergreat Greeter unit parade turn out.
The Sahib Circus is April 8, 9 and 10. We needGreeters and Greeterettes for all shows; please signup for the times you will be able to work.
Birthdays for April are John Winters, WarrenWilliamson and Jim Scott.
On a sad note, Ford Harris age 93 passed away twoweeks ago. He was a true gentleman and a respectedGreeter. Anyone who knew him knows it was anhonor just to talk with him.
We have Greeters recovering from various surger-ies, some who are ill and those who have familymembers who are ill. Let’s keep them in our prayers.
Be a Greeter, join the prestige unit! See any Greeterfor an application.
March was another busy month for Sahib. I at-tended the Oriental Guide School from March 9
through 12. This was a very educating couple of daysup in Tampa with 178 officers and 130 ladies takingpart. I listened to the many stories from temples fromall over North America and realized what a greatShrine Sahib is. The officers gathered as I would talkabout our weekly men’s luncheon, the Thursday nightHillbilly buffets, pancake breakfast and let’s notforget the Bingo. Some talked that they had Bingo, but they couldn’t get volunteers to work and they hadluncheons once a month, but they stopped coming. Ican’t tell you how proud it made me to talk up ourShriners and their ladies.
This seminar pushed the importance of our ladies, and I couldn’t have agreed more. Those who know myLady Wendy know what can be done with great womenby your side. As I was in classes all day the ladieswere also busy in ladies programs learning thingsfrom protocol to their part as Divan ladies and fund-raisers. I can’t wait to start putting the ideas learnedin the workshops to good use around Sahib.
The spring training, county fair and Motor Corpspoker run are other events in March that kept manyof us busy. Well don’t hang up your running shoes yet,April brings the Sahib Shrine Circus. This will be athree-day Circus, so there should be a show time foryou and the family to make this great show.
We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

What a great month March was. Participation atour luncheons are still being well attended,
going from strength to strength. The second Friday ofthe month seems to fit well into the Masonic calendarso it looks like a keeper. As I like to say in my emailreminders, “You’ve got to get lunch somewhere so youmight as well join us.” Everybody just orders off themenu. The price is right, the conversation lively andyou might even hear a joke or two. Feel free to bringa friend if you want—they don’t have to be a Mason. It’s an open affair , there’s no agenda and no meeting. So, look forward to seeing you all at our next luncheon
Reminder: Scottish Rite Reunion, Saturday April 9and 16. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., with
degrees beginning at 8:00 a.m. Come out and meetyour new Scottish Rite brothers and support themthrough their degrees.
The cornerstone has been finished and set for ourbrothers when they received their third degree intheir Blue Lodge. The time has come for them tobuild. Think about it. The cornerstone of the lodge isthe Mason who has used the working tools to becomea good Master Mason; the cornerstones of the nationare the law-abiding citizens. The cornerstone of manis his firm belief in a Supreme Being. The cornerstoneof our fraternity is the Master Mason who continuallystrives to expand his knowledge on all aspects of thefraternity.
Remember when your cornerstone was set it wasdone with impressive ceremonies. Its form and situ-ation were of major importance. It was perfectlysquare on its surface and in its solid contents a cube, the square being a symbol of morality and the cube asymbol of truth. It was placed in a situation betweenthe north, the area of darkness and the east, the placeof light; thus showing you the progress on towardlight. The opportunity to continue that travel towardthe east, that source of additional light, is now avail-able to you.
Come and expand your knowledge of our frater-nity by attending the Scottish Rite reunion of April 9and 16.
The Ceremony of Remembrance was a huge suc-cess again this year. I would like to thank everyonethat attended. The food was outstanding and theceremony itself went off without a hitch. Great job toall of the cast members that participated.
Note: Any Scottish Rite Mason in good standing iseligible to visit or even join the Sarasota Scottish RiteClub. Please feel free to contact me [email protected] or (941) 232-1494 if you are evenremotely interested, have any questions or want to beadded to the SSRC email list.

By the way, currently dues are only $20a year, a great bargain in today’s economy. There are several of you that indicated tome, to Gene or other members of ourclub, that you would be joining us. Timedoes have a habit of passing quickly andbefore we know it, time has left us be-hind. Don’t let this happen to you. Hope-fully you will put us in your scheduleduring the next few weeks, come, andpartake of great camaraderie, fellowship, food, etc.
I would like to tell you about oneactivity our club holds the first Mondayof the month. An auction after we closethe meeting. Dave Gardner, a Sahib Shri-ner, whom many of you know is our auc-tioneer. We have fun bidding or cheeringon others to bid on various items that themembers have brought with them theyno longer need or want and in many caseshave never used. Remember the old ad-age; one person’s junk is another person’streasurer. April 4 will be our last auctionbefore we go dark. If you attend that dayand wish to join in the bidding, you can.Maybe you will be lucky and end up with
a new treasure to take home. You alsocan bring in an item or two or more thatare no longer something you need orwant, but is still in good workable condi-tion. Items may be new or used; it is justa part of the fun we share together. Oh,by the way, the funds raised from this areused to go on our annual picnic. Just lastmonth on March 23, we had our picnicout on the island. It was very specialtime for all that attended. Start attend-ing now and you can be part of our nextyear’s picnic.
There is so much I want to share withyou about High 12 in future issues of“The Reporter”. However, Gene and Iwould love to see you at our get-togethersso we can tell you all about it in person.I am this year’s master of ceremoniesand I would love to have the opportunityto introduce several of you in the comingweeks. Remember, April has 5 Mondaysand we look forward to having you withus for one or more of those days. Severalof our snowbirds start heading northduring April so our numbers start de-creasing but your presence will be a niceaddition as well as much appreciated. Please come and join us.

Nyla Temple No. 152Daughters of the Nileby Diane Nourse, Queen, [email protected]
Welcome to the Daughters of the Nile; yes, this iswhat we say to all of you who might be inter-
ested in becoming a new princess. I began as a prin-cess two and a half years ago. I was anxious to becomeinvolved because I feel you get more out of an organi-zation if you take part. Little did I know that I wouldfind myself ready to be a queen today.
Yes, as you read this column I will be installed asthe Queen of Nyla Temple No. 152 in Sarasota, andam ready to help the children in the 22 ShrinersHospitals for Children that the Shriners have main-tained for all these years.
I have been lucky enough to have had a mentorand very dear friend at my side in this incrediblejourney. We became friends some 25 years ago asmembers of the Eastern Star. We came togetheragain here in Florida about five years ago. Now, asshe had been nurturing me to the throne of Nyla, shehas left our midst. Mary Ann Hastings lost her life inFebruary in an automobile accident. I am going to domy very best to live up to the position she created overseveral years when she served as our queen.
We have some exciting plans for the coming year.We look forward to seeing many of you at the eventswhen it is possible. Our Supreme Session is in Tampathis year. Hopefully many of you will be able toattend. We are pleased that our Supreme PrincessRoyal, Laura Richardson, is from Bradenton, and willbecome our new Supreme Queen in June.
In August, we would like to invite all of you ladiesto a luncheon in Venice so that we can greet oldfriends, socialize with new friends and look to in-creasing our membership with those who visit anddiscover the great time we have in DON.
We have a new pageantry/patrol unit that per-formed for the first time at the Supreme Queen’s visitin February. We will be performing again today at theinstallation, to which all of you are invited, and againin Tampa in June.
Yes, today, April 2, is the start of that incredibleyear as queen. I hope to see many of you in my travels. Please come up to me and say hello, introduce your-self and chat awhile. I do love to travel, talk and meetnew friends. See you all soon. In Nile love.

THIRD IN A SERIESBy Noble Michael A. Parkes
Editor-in-Chief
Actor, Mason, Shriner, born GwyllynSamuel Newton “Glenn” Ford May1st 1916 at Jeffrey Hale Hospital in
Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Believe it ornot he was a great nephew of Canada’s firstPrime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald.
The Fords moved to Santa Monica, Cali-fornia in 1924 and Glenn became a natural-ized American Citizen in 1939. He acted inWest Coast stage companies, before joiningColumbia Pictures in 1939.
His stage name came from his father’shometown of Glenford, Canada and his firstmajor movie part came in 1939 in the firm“Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence”.
I guess the first picture I remember GlennFord in was “Blackboard Jungle” but I re-
member him more for the original “3:10 toYuma”. Probably, because it’s been playinga lot on television over the past couple ofyears.
Glenn saw service with the US MarineCorps during WWII as a photographic spe-cialist with the rank of sergeant, spendingmost of his time in Quantico, Virginia. Hewas honorably discharged from service inDecember of 1944. In 1958 he joined theNaval Reserve and was commissioned alieutenant commander. In 1967 he went toVietnam for a month tour of duty as a loca-tion scout for combat scenes for a trainingfilm. He retired from the Navy in the 1970swith the rank of Captain.
Glenn was initiated into Palisades LodgeNo. 637, which is now Santa Monica Pali-
sades No. 307, and a Charter Member RivieraLodge No. 780 Pacific Palisades California.Although I have not been able to find theyear, at some point he was Mason of theYear. Glenn was also a member of AlMalaikah Shrine.
The last time I remember seeing GlennFord was several years ago during an inter-view on Canadian television. He was beingquestioned during a visit back to Canada. After answering several questions, Glenn, turned to the interviewer and said “Howcome you haven’t asked me how I feel aboutbeing home”. To me this said a lot.
Even though he had spent a lot of his lifein the US he was, I believe, still proudlyCanadian.

Call: Laura Burgess (941) 758-9196 orMarylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 orChickie Johnson (941) 966-2678 orConnie Lawson (941) 758-8274 or
The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofNovember 30, 2010, they have collected 70, 508 lbs., for a total of$33,776.93 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS
1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans wouldrequire a great deal more storage space. You should go aheadand recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in thedumpster behind Sahib.
2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds
worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are
delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unitlocation) and then taken to the recycling center. The moneynetted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair RepairFund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!
Hospital Transportation FundCollection Boxes
What are they?A plastic cube with a slot in the top.
What are the boxes for?To help collect donations, money for ourHospital Transportation Fund to helprelieve the pressure from the HospitalDays Fund Drive.
Where are the boxes to be?In any store or business, preferably near acash register. Within eyesight of customersmaking it easy for them to put theirchange in the box.
When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donatesmall amounts of cash at any time.
As most of you know, many businesses have some kind ofcollection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?
Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449if you can arrange a placement.
