Celebrate with our Cameroonian friends in worship on November 11th

The Cameroonian Presbyterian community in Minnesota has chosen Chain of Lakes Church to

celebrate their annual celebration of the independence of the Presbyterian Church in

Cameroon.

On that day Chain of Lakes is turning over worship to our African friends. The music and

speaking will be shared by our friends from the Cameroon. We will be celebrating

Communion.

We expect approximately 200 Cameroonians to be in worship. After worship we will

enjoy a wonderful Cameroonian meal. Worship will last approximately two hours.

Many folks at Chain of Lakes have never had the privilege of attending worship led by our

Presbyterian friends from the Cameroon. All of us will learn and experience a different

style of worship.

Bring a friend to worship!! This will be an event that we will remember for a very long

time!

The Pew Forum is an organization that does research on American life. They recently released a report on religious life in our country. The report is fascinating and can be revealing to us at Chain of Lakes Church. The main headlines of the report are that "Nones" are on the rise. This means

that people who don't claim an affiliation to a church or religion are on the increase. The report called these folks, "Unaffiliated." Twenty percent of all adults in the United States describe themselves as unaffiliated compared to 15% of all adults five years ago This doesn't mean that the United States has become a secular country compared to other countries. The number of Americans who currently say religion is very important in their lives (58%), is little changed since 2007. This number is much higher than Britain (17%), France (13%), Germany (21%) or Spain (22%). When asked their impressions about the church the unaffiliated shared some fascinating responses. They said that they believe the church is too concerned with money

and power; are too focused on rules; and are too involved with politics. That makes sense to me. I don't want to be a pastor of a church who falls into any of those three categories. A large number of unaffiliated folks believe the church should bring people together and strengthen community bonds; they also believe that the church should play an important role in helping the poor and needy. Wow!! This sounds like what the Presbyterian church does. If anything those of us who travel in the Presbyterian car do a terrific job at strengthening community bonds and helping the poor and needy. Our Presbyterian approach to service and community building are ones that can connect to people who aren't affiliated to a congregation. As we make plans for the new year, let’s continue to discern how God is calling us to bring together the community who lives near our new property. And let’s go out of our way to care for the poor and needy. If our ministries can be successful at these two things, then our entire congregation will be successful!

"Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the

upright to praise him." Psalm 33

What beautiful voices we have! I have only been here a

short while and I continue to be quite excited to be

worshiping with you every week. While I continue to meet

and remember everyone’s names, my mind is trying to map

out the musicians in our church. How lovely it would be to

incorporate more of our voices and talents in leading songs

and presenting worship to our Lord and Savior. Pray about

and consider how you may be used through the music

ministry of our church. Do you love to sing or play an

instrument? I’ve already met a few of you and am looking

forward to the music we can make together! If you don’t

catch me on a Sunday, feel free to contact me:

SUN DAY SCHOO L Sunday school children will be participating in a five week series about the two Sacraments in the Presbyterian Church –Baptism and Communion. The following is a list of what they will be learning: Covenant/Promise: What are some of the promises or covenants God made with people in the Bible. What are some of the

modern day promises we make. Christian Sign Language Exploring Jesus’ Baptism: Significance of baptism. What does God promise in a person’s Baptism/ What is the meaning of the promise the congregation makes with the baptized person. Rituals we celebrate today: Communion: Meals Jesus shared with people Baptism is the sign of membership in the Christian community. Children will learn that it is through baptism all of us are welcomed into God’s family. Celebrating Communion is not a snack we have during worship once a month. It is a sacred or holy act that reminds us of Gods grace and love for us. Here are some conversation ideas you can have with your children that will help with what they are learning on Sunday’s; Share special events in your life that have become traditions in your family. If you were baptized, share what you recall of that special time. When did you first participate in Communion? How was it different from what we do in this church now?

receive training in November and start at the beginning

of 2013. The other five from Chain of Lakes who are

Owens, and Pastor Paul. Talk to Val Owens at 763-427-

9503 if you are interested.
