Chaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerby the Rev. Noble Don Kerr, Chaplain

I was watching a TV program onthe History Channel called the

“Clash of Cavemen,” the Neander-thals vs. Cro-Magnon, for the rightsto the world—the ultimate inter-species survival of the fittest.

Scientists and historians havespeculated the reason Cro-Magnonman survived was there was a cul-tural stimulus that developed alanguage—the ability to commu-nicate. There was no written lan-guage until about 3,000BC, butthey think there was a verbal lan-guage 25,000 years earlier. Thisallowed the Cro-Magnon man toleverage group efforts to get food, deal with the elements and to sur-vive conflicts with the Neander-thals. They further speculate thatNeanderthals failed to develop amethod to communicate.

In the last issue I lamented herethat the over-riding theme of theMay unit/club head meeting was“we have a lack of communica-tions.” The above theory confirmswhat happens to a group that can-

not (or will not) communicate—they cease to exist!

We always hear that decreasingmembership is our main problem. Iwonder—each year I notice thatsome of the new creations from theprevious year are on the non-pay-ment of dues list (five are on thecurrent list of NPD), was this thenew creation’s fault, or ourorganization’s lack of communica-tions with them? I bet if the Cro-Magnon man noticed one of his clanhadn’t shown up to the recent hunt-ing party, they would have ‘commu-nicated’ with him to find out why?

While we are under the headingof communications, I draw your at-tention to page 25 of this issue, pleaseturn to it now! I encourage you all totear that page out and carry it withyou to Sahib events. Periodicallypuruse the page, to remind yourselfwhat our new nobles look like, anduse this tool to help you to greet ournew nobles when you see them and“communicate” with them how gladwe are they are nobles of Sahib.

August is sort of a slow month, when there are not so many

activities. Nevertheless, if you area Knight Templar you would findthere are lots going on with manyactivities.

Thinking of activities, here issome Scottish humor:

Sandy MacTavish was walkinghome with too much to drink. Fi-nally, he lay down alongside theroadway for a wee sleep. When morn-ing came, a fellow Scot was seenwalking down the same road with alive chicken in his arm, the chickenwas squawking and his wings wereflapping. Sandy awoke to the noise, rubbed his eyes and said to himself,“It always brings tears to my eyeswhen I here the pipes.”

Sandy became depressed anddecided to end it all by hanging

himself. His friend David camealong just in time, cut the rope, and saved Sandy’s life. True toform, Sandy sends David a bill forthe cost of the rope!

So much for that. On a differentnote think about these things. Stopto consider the beauty and wonderof the earth. And, always apolo-gize if you were wrong. Try to un-derstand. Mend a quarrel. Lookout for a friend and gladden theheart of a child. Forego a grudge.Think first of someone else and bekind and gentle. Laugh some moreand express gratitude. Always wor-ship your God. All the above comesfrom the writings of Albert Pikewithin the Lodge of Perfection.Such thoughts should be the guidefor all Masons.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

What a wonderful year we are having at your Sahib Shrine. We had theopportunity of going to Houston, Texas for the Ladies Oriental ShrineGrand Council; it was a highlight that Carol and I will never forget. Thehospitality of the ladies will always be remembered. The pageantry andseeing all of those White Fezzes, my speech was very carefully given. I wasnot about to make any mistakes with all the ladies there; thank you Sar-I-Court No.79 LOSNA. I will never forget the great time we had.

Grand Lodge in Orlando was the next opportunity to see our next GrandMaster being elected. You should all take at least one time to see this.

Our Ceremonial was the best that I have seen here at Sahib. The Wednes-day get acquainted time went over well, thank you nobles, for your partici-pation in showing off your units and clubs. Friday night the first sectionceremony with the leader Ed Firquin, was near perfect. Thanks to theRitual Team for doing such great work.

Saturday’s parade went well, the luncheon was well received and thesecond section with the Arch is the best of all Shrinedom. My Fez goes offto David Bruce and Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier for making this a memorableevent. I want to thank all the Arch participants for always putting on sucha wonderful presentation.

Nobles, let’s not forget the December ceremony. We have to go out andrecruit, as we never have before; it is imperative that we bring in newnobles. This is the future for Sahib Shrine. Remember it is not a secretanymore. Sahib Shrine is the best and we will keep it that way.

Remember your Blue Lodge.

Yours in the Faith,

Don Vos, Potentate

It’s August and we thought we’d have some downtime, but we’re gearing up again for the many

venues Sahib will have this fall.By this time, you have noticed the improvements

that have been made during our summer close down. The parking lot has been repaved and re-striped soyour car fits into the parking spot. We may have losta spot or two but we saved a lot of tempers. Also, thenew carpeting in the main hall has been completed;after 11 years, it has served it’s time.

Speaking of change, have you seen the SahibRestaurant “Specials” on Wednesday and Fridaynights? They were made after we considered how bestto serve you. The next step is up to you—give us a

visit—it’s your temple and we are trying our best toplease. Give some thought to your Restaurant andLounge for dinner; we would love to see you here withus.

The monthly Pancake Breakfast is on the first thisAugust, with the Unit/Club meeting and Stated Meet-ing on the seventh. Birthday/Anniversary dinnerdance is on the tenth, and the SESA Convention willbe from August 11 to 14. There may be a few othermeetings as well as a couple of surprises.

Next month I will report on Imperial and the workthat was completed there.

Until next time, shake a hand, not a fist and youwill feel a lot better for it.

As I write this article I have not yet left for Torontoand the Imperial Session. I have recently re-

turned from Dallas, Texas and the InternationalSupreme Council, Order of DeMolay, where I waselected an active (or voting) member. The trip toDallas was quite an experience. At the ISC session,Imperial Sir Jack Jones was made an Honorary PastGrand Master of DeMolay, as was Grand CommanderSeale of the AASR. Imperial Sir Douglas Maxwellwas inducted into the DeMolay Hall of Fame.

Looking forward we have another ceremonial com-ing up in December and now is the time to get thosepetitions in for Sahib Shrine. Membership is a never-ending task. There are always more members to

recruit and restore. That is the only way we are goingto grow and survive. I urge every noble to be arecruiter. You have had an enjoyable experience inthe Shrine. Share your experience with a non-Shrinerand invite him to join.

The Unit and Club Christmas Party is scheduledfor Tuesday, December 21. Make your plans accord-ingly.

We will have another Fall Cash Stimulus pro-gram. Only one thousand tickets will be sold at $10each. The six drawings in December will be for $500each. The tickets will be distributed at the AugustUnit/Club Head meeting. Buy some, sell some. Sup-port your Shrine.

As most of you know, John Cooney is having seri-ous medical problems. Early in April he suffered

a stroke, and has been unable to assume his duties asthe Sahib Recorder. In order to keep on top of themany details that are the responsibility of the Re-corder, the Divan asked me to return for the rest ofJohn’s term. I will do my best to keep you informed onthe happenings at Sahib during the remaining monthsof 2010.

When the building reopens after the ImperialSession, many changes will be apparent. The parkinglot will have been recoated and striped. We hope thatsome of the pockets where water gathered will beeliminated as well. The interior of our building willhave had fresh paint applied where needed. Newcarpeting will also have been installed in our mainhall and the carpets in the lounge and Sahara roomswill have been cleaned. Our floors will have beencleaned and waxed where needed, and the kitchenwill have been given a through cleaning. We shouldbe in great shape for some time. Be sure and come byand take a look at your great facility.

I know you have heard a great deal about member-ship and the future of Sahib and the Shrine in gen-eral. Let me just run a few figures past you to emphasisthe need for all of us to recruit new members.

On January 1, 2004, Sahib had 2,162 members. On December 31, 2009, Sahib had 1,555 members. This is a drop reduction of 607 or 28.08%. In the sameperiod of time, the Shrine, as a whole, had 457,747members as of January 1, 2004, and as of December31, 2009 it had 340,048, a drop of 117,699 or 25.71%.As you can readily see, we are definitely headed in thewrong direction. All of us must be members of therecruitment and retention committee. We not onlyneed new members, we need to retain the currentmembers. As an example, Sahib has 101 unpaidmembers for the year 2010 as of July 1, 2010. This isabout 15% of our total membership.

Our membership at Sahib is aging, and we are notattracting the new younger members. Currently wehave 75 nobles between the ages of 90 and 101, 178nobles between the ages of 85 and 89, and 329 be-

Warm days and happy summer to all Shriners! As most of you know, Gulf Shrine Club is dark

during the summer months of June, July and August.I did want to mention and update a few things to

all my Shrine Brothers. One of our hardest working members, Ray Perez

returned home a few weeks ago from hip replacementsurgery. Quite a few Shriners and close friends havebeen constantly visiting him and Ray is healing re-markably well. Thanks to all of his nurses’ excellentcare, lead by head nurse Cindy Perez, Ray has been infantastic spirits, and is still a commanding presence, even from his hospital bed. We look forward to hisreturn to our meetings and events.

One of Gulf Shrine Club’s long time members BillPerman and his lovely Lady Ruth have moved fromFlorida back to Columbus, Ohio. At the encourage-ment of his family and due to serious health reasons, they decided to move to their hometown to be close tofamily and his only daughter. Many of you, who knowBill, know he is a dedicated Mason and Shriner. Hewas very active in our Shrine Club since joining in1991. He served as treasurer (receiving emeritusstatus) and was instrumental in running our springtraining baseball concession stands for over 10 years. Our club’s visitation committee went to Bill andRuth’s lovely home in Palmetto, and sat with themreflecting on Masonry and Shrinedom. (don’t ask)Towsley were recently recognized with ‘Devoted Ser-vice Emeritus’ awards from the Sahib CredentialsCommittee.

Please recycle your magazines by blackening orcutting out your address labels and bringing them toour Tuesday breakfasts for Noble John Brophy andhis helpers. Hospital and doctor office waiting roomshave welcomed John’s magazine distribution projectfor our club. Meanwhile, we breathlessly await theresults of Nobles Bill Schultz’s and J.D. And as we go to press, no one except AssistantRabban Charles Levan 33°, correctly identifiedMichael Moore as our June ‘Quotable Notable’ whoobserved in the May 10 Time magazine concerningthe newly elected President of Brazil: “What Lula

Motor Corps Shrine Clubby Stevin C. Helin (Varmint), Scribe, [email protected]

Okay then, first the bad news. For those of you whodid not take advantage of the Motor Corps’ invi-

tation to accompany us to Murphy, North Carolinaover the May 22 weekend—you missed a good time. What a great venue our host Gary Nickols (Stumpy)and his Lady Tracy put forth for our enjoyment andentertainment at his River’s Edge RV Resort justwest of Murphy on Highway 64. It just keeps gettingbetter and better each visit. Plus we had a nicereprieve from the encroaching Florida summer heat.

Much assistance was rendered to Gary by hisbrother James and his wife, Pat who were visitingfrom the north country on the maiden voyage of theirrecently acquired (Gary says stolen for the price theypaid) RV. One might say that they were ‘HappyCampers.” Also on hand, as usual, to help make it allwork were Jay and Connie Spenla who are in theprocess of building their new home up on a mountainnearby. Once that is completed, we will probably seeeven less of them. And of course, no one can keep ourvery own Chief Chef and organizer extraordinaire,Wally Lacey and his bride Connie, out of the middleof events like this. He is always there to add a littlefrosting of his own to the cake. Thanks again fromeveryone attending to us all for another super event.

The good news is that the Monkeys did not changehands on this trip. Well that is good for all but thosewho now possess these varmints of endearment. Hey,varmints aren’t ALL bad. Hang on, though, as thesummer is short and then we will be out in forceriding again come fall.

So, y’all just might want to reconsider when and if,next time you receive another invite to head to themountains with the Motor Corps. (Hint: we go againin the fall to ride and see the fall colors, so until then,be sure to be on your best behavior when around theMotor Corps guys and gals. If you should find one ormore of us in the Sahib Sahara lounge, or any placeelse for that matter, looking thirsty, you might justoffer to buy a round of adult beverages. This shouldcement your invitation) PS: You do not have to havea motorcycle to ride with us, as any type of road legalvehicle is just fine…

Still dwelling in the past, we had a nice contin-gency of the Corps show up and parade in the SarasotaMemorial Day parade along with, I heard tell, everyother Sahib Club and Unit that has a parade contin-gency. It was quite a sight to see, and we had nothingbut applause during the entire parade route from theon-lookers. On a personal note, I learned to wave withmy foot due to the tight operating area and the factthat both hands were usually very busy trying tomaintain distance and speed, let alone trying to stayupright. Another fun, but HOT, time in the old town;needless to say, the finish line brought on a beeline tothe nearest cool place to rehydrate and let our mountscool down. Fun was had by all though, as usual.

June of course brought us the Spring Ceremonialactivities at Sahib during the first week. The Corpshad a booth set up for the candidate introductionnight. We had two bikes in the main hall along with

It’s pretty quiet around the Ag Building these daysas no parades are scheduled, many nobles are

“back up north” for the summer and our monthlyTuesday lunches are on hold until September. (TheAg Building is a property owned by the Venice ShrineClub wherein the Keystone Kops’ parade vehicles arestored and where club picnics are held).

One recent development of note was the removalof an old storage building from the property. It was ina very dilapidated condition and had become home to

numerous unwanted critters. The Venice Shrine Clubthanks Past President Keith Slocum for overseeingthis project.

The only time our friendsand nobles from the Shrine have had contact with usis at our Pub Night, that we sponsor every February,or the usual individual piper for various functions. The one exception was the invitation by Ill. Sir DonVos, when he invited our band to play for his guestsat his Potentate’s Ball. This was a distinct honor forme and double the thrill because of the presence thatevening of the Imperial Potentate and his Court.Because of his presence, there were probably moreShrine Potentates and their ladies than usual inattendance. For this honor, the Shrine Band is in thedebt of Ill. Sir Don Vos.

We also have the distinction and honor of beingone of the most professional bands in Shrinedom. Ourpipers and drummers have been playing pipes and

drums, for some members over 50 years. Several well-known bands in the US and Canada have the plea-sure of their talents in the summer months as mostare snow birders. At The Canadian Snowbird Ex-travaganza in Lakeland, our band performs the open-ing ceremonies and concerts for both days. We haveanother distinction having a former Pipe Major fromthe Royal Canadian Black Watch Pipes and Drumsplay with us.

In closing, I would like to remind our nobles andfriends, that we have in season Pipe Band practiceevery Thursday after lunch at the Shrine. The publicand nobles are invited to listen at our pleasure. Lookfor us in several different settings—The Spring andWinter Ceremonials, Canada Day, the New MembersCocktail Party and most of all our Pub Night, Febru-ary 25, 2011. We’re looking forward to seeing you atour performances.

Pipes & Drumsby Philip F. Staples, President and Drum Major, [email protected]

“Director Emeritus” Harry Falck. We welcome Dougand Lady Debby. We also extend a warm welcome toAl Corning on rejoining our “heavenly music mak-ers.”

Since many of our bandsmen are on vacation, there will be no rehearsals in July. But, we areeagerly looking forward to the Sahib Fall picnic onSeptember 26. Also, on Friday, November 5, theOriental Band will host the “Ken Loomer Big Band.”

Tickets will go on sale August 1 at the box office. Lookfor more details in the Reporter and the bulletinboard at the Shrine. Tickets price will be $10.00 perperson. We invite all of you to join us for this enjoy-able evening.

Remember, support your Shrine, collect pull-tabsand keep a child in your heart.

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

Well we have gone from winter to summer withlittle or no spring. However, I won’t complain.

Our Ceremonial went off well thanks to our Cer-emonial Masters and their ladies. We brought intoour midst 14 new nobles. Obviously, we would like todo better in December and I’m sure we will. Remem-ber nobles visit your Blue Lodges.

Our Money Mania has come and gone; however,we have fallen way behind on our budget of $22,000,having only funded a net of $11,706. We will bestarting a Cash Stimulus 2010 in August, hoping tomake up the bulk of this shortfall. Of course, it allhinges on the Divan and nobles at large. We thankyou all for your efforts even in these unusual eco-nomic times. Keep up the good work.

I’ve made an effort to work with the “Salute toVeterans” committee chaired by Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier. The event will be held Friday, November 12 , at7:00 p.m. at Sahib. There will be a few new wrinkles, hoping to keep this Salute to our Veterans a viablevenue. It would be awesome if our nobles wouldsupport this event fully.

My Lady Stacey Lee, her friend Lady Midge Jor-dan and I have begun work on the Christmas Partyfor children treated at Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren through the efforts of Sahib Shrine. I have askedthe two Ceremonial Masters and their ladies to aid usin this endeavor.

We are also attending the Imperial Session begin-ning July 4, in Toronto, Canada. I will be attending asone of the representatives from Sahib Shrine and wantto thank all the nobles for their vote of confidence.

I attended the Grand Masters event in Orlando,May 30, with other Divan members.

In closing, my Lady Stacey Lee and I will beattending the SESA convention in Greenville, SouthCarolina with the Model-T Unit in August. It shouldbe an enjoyable time for all. We leaving the SESAconvention August 14 to visit our son and his familyin Pennsylvania and other family members aroundthe state. We will return to Florida on Monday Au-gust 30. See you all in September. Have a wonderfulsummer and hope all get to visit with family. MayGod be with you and your families. Remember “Fun,Family and Fellowship.”

ness to rekindle the Masonic light. At the first An-nual Convent of the new United Grand Lodge ofGermany AF& AM, in 1948, the pin was adopted as anofficial Masonic emblem in honor of thousands of

valiant brethren who carried on Masonic work underadverse conditions. In 1949, each delegate to theConference of Grand Masters in Washington, D.C.received one from Dr. Theodore Vogel, Grand Masterof Grand Lodge of Germany.

Thus did a simple flower blossom forth into asymbol of the fraternity.

nature of the bee. It appears that what we call a lodgetoday was at one time referred to as a hive, and whena lodge went off to form another lodge it was referredto as swarming.

It is easy to see what the bee and beehives werechosen as symbols. The bee is industrious and work-ing tirelessly, not for himself, but for his community. He as the strength and knowledge of materials andworks in complete cooperation with his colleagues. He protects his hive and builds, makes honey and

lives in a society ruled by law and order, attributeswhich the early stone mason had to follow to con-struct the great cathedrals.

Yes, we have reached the stage where we need tofollow the example of the bee and work diligently torebuild our fraternity. There is no time for relaxing. Our fraternity will grow as each of its members growsand continues to work for its improvement.

Remember your Scottish Rite stresses the impor-tance of being industrious in the 5th, 6th, 8th and19th degrees. We meet on the second Monday of eachmonth at 7:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6:00 p.m.(reservations requested).

At our annual meeting in December2009, a budget was adopted for the year2010. It was anticipated that we wouldhave the income from dues from the ma-jority of our members. Our annual duesare only $100, and that includes theShriners Hospitals for Children assess-ment and the Imperial per capita fee. That is a very small amount to belong toour fraternity and to help support ourShriners Hospitals. If you have not paidyour 2010 dues yet, please do so as soonas possible.

live models sporting the various MotorCorps uniforms. I mean, how could any-one resist a uniform, right? Just too badthat all of the other units have them also.Well, not too sure, if the Clowns reallyqualify as uniformed, but I’ll give themthe benefit of the doubt and include them.Besides, I am not interested in seeing abunch of ticked off clowns chasing mearound for such a trivial matter, at leastnot the Sahib Clowns.

The Ceremonial parade, even as shortas it is, can be impressive to someonewho hasn’t seen all of the units in theirregalia and doing their ‘thing’. It alsogives the Divan an opportunity to inspectthe troops, and of course, show theirgratitude for all that we do in support ofour temple, by buying a round after-wards. Hmm, not likely; anyway, it wasfun for all.

Now don’t forget that Biker BillyThursday nights started July 15. I be-lieve there have been a couple of thingsadded to the menu, with one of thembeing a “Road Kill” special of the evening.I am not too sure what that is all aboutthough, not being a chef nor having any-thing to do with the preparation of any of

the food. We sure hope that y’all willcome out and enjoy our indoor picnicsand some great hospitality.

Okay, that looks like it is about it forthis issue except for salutations to ourbelated July birthday and anniversarycelebrants: Birthdays were: Carol Fenten- 24th, Kathy Galanti - 14th, John(Hotrod) Hubbard - 7th, Theresa Jordan- 17th, Wally (Red Dog) Lacey - 28th,Tom (Turmoil) Rigby - 24th, Paul (WoodDog) Woodman - 30th, and his lady, Sue(Puppy) Woodman - 4th. Anniversarieswere Don (Bypass) and Anne (Pebbles)Stuckey - 3rd.

Now, if I have missed someone then Ido not have the your information on theofficial MC listing of members and theirimportant info, which is top secret andcan only be accessed by anyone with acomputer, so send me an update if youwould please. I certainly do not want tobe accused of playing favorites.

Oh, I have recently heard via the pro-verbial grapevine that someone’s (nonames, Cooter), birthday on November27, and her anniversary of marriage toWally on June 30, is always forgotten inthis article’s acknowledgements. To herI say, please rest assured that the situa-tion has been rectified and if I were atfault in the past, PLEASE forgive myerror, as I would never intentionally hurtanyone in such a horrifically demeaningway. My many apologies; if it wasn’t myfault…. deal with it.

Hope all had a bang up July.

York Rite – the Forget-Me-Notby B. John Ross, KYCH, [email protected]

We have reached the stage in our fraternity wherewe need to look at our symbols and take their

lessons to heart. No symbol could be more importantat this time than the beehive. Christian monks werethe first to domesticate bees, at least in Europe, andit is to them we owe the beehive as a symbol ofindustriousness, adopted by operative masons as areminder to the apprentice that if he would masterhis craft he must be up and at it so long as light lasts.

The beehive, Masonically, is symbol of the indus-try that should be practiced by all created beings. We

should never be satisfied to be idle when we, with alittle effort, can help our fellow man or our fraternity.

The bee makes a comb with geometrical perfec-tion, the six-sided cells providing storage space forthe honey. The comb is certainly a sign of the perfec-tion that can result from continuous hard work.

The bee was mentioned in Masonry as early as1724 as a symbol because it surpassed all other livingcreatures in the contrivance and commodiousness ofits comb. Masonry or building seems to be the very

Let us relax a bit with some Masonic trivia to endour vacation from York Rite history etc., with the

story behind the Forget-Me-Not (Das Vergiss-meinnicht). In early 1934, soon after Hitler’s rise topower, it became evident that Freemasonry was indanger. In that same year, the “Grand Lodge of theSun” (one of the pre-war German Grand lodges, lo-cated in Bayreuth) realizing the grave dangers in-volved, adopted the little blue Forget-Me-Not floweras a substitute for the traditional square and com-pass. It was felt the flower would provide an outwardmeans of identification while lessening the risk ofpossible recognition in public by the Nazis, who wereengaged in wholesale confiscation of all MasonicLodge properties. Freemasonry went undercover, and

this delicate flower assumed its role as a symbol ofMasonry, surviving throughout the reign of darkness.

During the ensuing decade of Nazi power, a littleblue Forget-Me-Not flower worn on a brother’s lapelserved as one method whereby brethren could iden-tify each other in public, and in cities and concentra-tion camps throughout Europe. The Forget-Me-Notdistinguished the lapels of countless brethren whostaunchly refused to allow the symbolic light of Ma-sonry to be completely extinguished. When the “GrandLodge of the Sun” reopened in 1947 a little pin in theshape of a Forget-Me-Not was officially adopted asthe emblem of that first annual convention of breth-ren who had survived the bitter years of semi-dark-

In recognition of decades presentingquality presentations of the banjo

which, in the process, has raised over$500,000 for worthwhile charities, in2010 Bill Pincumbe will be inducted intothe National Four-String Banjo Hall ofFame in the category of Promotion. Whilethis individual recognition is shared bythe many musicians, wives and support-ers who have contributed to such an ad-mirable body of work, the vision anddedicated leadership of banjoist, vocal-ist, producer and promoter Bill Pincumbeis unquestionable.

In Flint, Michigan in 1980, Bill joinedthe Shriner’s and formed an entertain-ment unit called The Banjo-tainers whichraised thousands of dollars to supportthe Shriners Hospitals for Children andburn units.

Pincumbe also continued his interestin vocal music, becoming the musicaldirector of the Scottish Rite Cathedral inFlint.

Another illustration of Pincumbe’sfreely giving of his time and talents comesfrom the hundreds of appearances he hasarranged and donated to retirement andnursing homes over the years. “I reallylike bringing music that the folks recog-nize and, at the very least, can tap theirtoes to. You never know how your musicmight touch someone.

Following years of service, Pincumberetired from the Flint Police Departmentin 1987 and moved to Venice, Floridawhere he hoped to devote more time tothe banjo and entertaining. This hopetook little time to become reality as Billquickly teamed up with banjoist Sandy

perform three times per week during thewinter months. Sometimes it’s a lot ofwork but we really love doing it knowingthat all of the money we earn goes rightto the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.”

In addition to his charitable work,Bill continues to perform with variousbands—most notably his own regular ap-pearances and productions at the BayIndies community center near Venice,Florida. Since 1996 he has also donework for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s

Department as a civil process server. However, Bill’s immediate plans call forhim to concentrate on retirement, spend-ing time with Lana at their summer homein Crossville, Tennessee and traveling tovisit their grandchildren and families.

Banjo Band activities are quiet untilJanuary 2011. The Banjo Concert isscheduled for February 12, 2011 atSahib.
