Forty Days of Prayer
One of our five keys for growth for our congregation is that
we reach up in prayer. Beginning October 20th we will do
that very thing as we embark on our 40 days of prayer
journey. This is a congregation-wide campaign designed
to help all of us develop a deeper prayer life and draw
closer to the Lord.
The two key components of this program are the personal
study guide(Love To Pray) and the Sunday morning
messages which will focus on prayer. It is extremely
important if we wish to get the full benefit of this program
that we purchase the study guide, read it consistently,
apply to our lives and most importantly, pray. There will
be a sign up sheet at the Welcome Desk if you would like
to purchase “Love To Pray.” ($7)
Most importantly, let us remember that the God to Whom we may pray is “able to do more than all we ask or imagine.” (Ephesians 3:20) Forty Days of Prayer could change your life and change the life of this congregation.
For Him, Dan

Thank you to everyone for their prayers, concern, calls and cards. I am feeling much better and
stronger. Please pray for continued healing. Thank you to Sharon Knisley who did the bulletin
for me when I was in the hospital.

I would also like to thank Roger and his crew for the work they did at my home. They accomplished all of the things I had wanted to do but have been unable to to do because of my health. It looks wonderful. Thank you. John VanSickle ******************************************************************************
I wanted to thank the church for yard work that Roger Richardson, Bobby & Rob Haynes, and
Larry Hamblin did at Robby and Georgia’s home. It looks so nice and was much appreciated.
Still pray for Robby as he has one more surgery late this month or next. He is doing well but
weak.
In Christian Love,
Frances and Georgia Stephens.

Mike and I would like to thank the Church and especially Lance for helping us to be able to visit my daughter Laura. She is slowly losing control of her muscles, she can no longer speak and can only communicate with a computer controlled by her eyes. Her family is working together and will survive the problems together. I cannot express what it meant to me to be able to visit this last time. The love this represents can not be expressed in words so we can only say Thank You. John & Mike Van Sickle
Thank You Notes

As the weather turns cooler it reminds me that fall is finally here, which I am excited
about. I love the fall the cooler weather, the bonfires, smores, and of course, football.
Another exciting thing about fall is that the school year has started and families are back
in a routine that hopefully includes time for church. In the next year I am going to be
focusing more attention on reaching out to the community, we can’t grow West Side from
within. We have to reach out. So I am planning several things to get West Side’s name
out in the community. If you would like to be a part of a ministry team that plans events
to get West Side out in the community more, see me for more information.
One of the events coming up at the end of October for the community is our Fall
Festival, on October 27th from 5-8pm. For this evening, families can come in costume if
they want and enjoy some fun family time as we have a trunk or treat, games, music,
food, face painting, bonfire and a short devotion. All of this is free to help West Side show
the love of Jesus in small practical ways. For this event we need fall decorations, hotdogs
and buns, chili, candy, hot chocolate and of course volunteers to run the games and
events along with people to decorate their trunks and hand out candy from them. Also, if
you would like to donate money to help off set the cost of some of the small prizes that
would be great as well. Just see myself or Brittany Hickerson for information on money
donations.
We are going to take a trip again to Charlotte, NC to Operation Christmas Child on
November 29-December 1st. We will be partnering with the same local church again to
serve breakfast to the homeless of Charlotte on the Saturday morning and then later in
the day we will be serving at Operation Christmas Child Warehouse where we will be filling
the shipping boxes with shoeboxes filled with gifts for kids all around the world. The work
in the warehouse is very fast paced and you will be standing the entire shift. If you are
interested there is a sign- up sheet on the bulletin board in the side entrance or see me or
Bud Haacke. Total cost of the trip will be determined soon based on numbers going.

Exodus 14:9
James Edwin Orr was born Jan. 15. 1912 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. At age 9, he became
a Christian. His faith was tested early, as his father and 3-year-old sister died the next year,
leaving the family financially burdened. After his older brother, the family breadwinner,
became sick and died, Edwin put his secondary education on hold while he went to work as
a clerk in a bakery to support his mother and surviving siblings. However, he continued his
studies after work.
About age 18, he heard the call to be an evangelist. With the help of a friend, they organ-
ized their first open-air meetings in Belfast. In 1933, Edwin heard the call to become a full-
time evangelist. His family objected, however. They were losing an in income source during
the world-wide Great Depression. Despite his family’s protests, Edwin went to London to
begin his full-time ministry. Using London as his base, his began evangelizing throughout
Eurasia and eventually expanded his campaign to North America. Early on, he also docu-
mented international evangelical work (particularly his own) in a series of books and arti-
cles.
In 1936, Edwin’s evangelistic efforts led him to Australia and New Zealand. Great crowds
attended his meetings, many giving their lives to Christ. For an Easter Sunday service, so
many people showed up that a midnight service was scheduled to accommodate the over-
flow crowds.
Before he left New Zealand, he met four Polynesian girls, who sang a traditional farewell
song. The memorable Maorian melody stuck in his mind. One day, while waiting in line at
the town’s post office, he remembered this tune. Soon, his mind recalled Psalm 139: 23-
24:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts; and see if there be
any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Inspired, he wrote the words on the back of an envelope while waiting in line. He later in-
cluded this poem (originally titled “Cleanse Me,” after 1 John 1:9) in his book, “All you
Need” (1936).
Despite the imminent war, Orr continued evangelizing throughout Eurasia. He even
preached in the Chinese territories that were not Japanese-occupied. Using his dual US-UK
citizenship, he took his family to Canada, where he briefly served in a pulpit ministry. Later,
they relocated to Chicago, where he matriculated at Northwestern University. During this
time (early 1940s), he became an ordained minister. After obtaining his M.A. degree from
NWU, he enlisted in the US Armed Forces. Although he became a chaplain in the Air Force,
he saw action around the world, eventually earning seven battle stars and attaining the
rank of major.
During his service, he probable heard this Maori melody again. The tune became a world-
wide favorite with GI’s that heard it while serving in the land of Oz. Others heard it, as thou-
sands of Maori men fought for the Allies.
After the war, Orr continued his world-wide mission and eventually settling in California. In
the late 1940s, “The Maori Farewell Song” had been outfitted with new secular lyrics and
became a world-wide hit. Now titled “Now is the Hour,” seven recordings made the US Bill-
board charts. The most successful was Bing Crosby’s, which went to No. 1. Orr’s text also
received greater attention, having been published and recorded many times in the post-war
years. The song was very popular during his Brazil crusades in the early 1950s.
Orr continued his ministry for many years. He became a friend and advisor to Billy Graham,
when he began his crusade ministry. He also served as a charter member of the advisory
board of Campus Crusade for Christ. Orr died on April 22, 1987 in Ridgecrest, SC, USA.
Plagued with heart trouble in later years, he died the morning after presenting a lecture at a
conference.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart today;
Try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from ev’ry sin and set me free.”

PRAYER MATTERS from the Prayer Ministry Team
–The following is adapted from Encountering Jesus (Praying the
Commands of Christ into Your Life) by Norval Hadley.
FASTING WEEK: FASTING WEEK: October 20 thru October 26. Please pray and fast at least one
meal for lost souls, church growth, church finances, our missionaries and that our nation will turn
The Message states, Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and in-
telligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list” (Matthew 22:37a). King David gives us
perhaps the best example of one who absolutely and without question loved the Lord his God with
all of his heart, soul, and mind. Dressed ceremonially for worship in a white linen ephod, David
“danced before the Lord with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel were bringing up
the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets” (2 Samuel 6:14–15). David loved God
intensely and creatively! The Psalms also testify to the depth of his desire for the Lord. He prayed
earnestly, sang, played instruments, wrote music, danced—and gave honor to God with every gift,
talent, and opportunity. One has only to read Psalm 63:1–8 to see the depth of longing David had
for the Father.
Psalm 63:4-5 says "I will praise you as long as I live and in your name I will lift up my hands. My
soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods, with singing lips my mouth will praise you."
Jesus commanded us to love the Lord our God, and Scripture punctuates this over and over again.
It has been my experience that when Scripture is repetitive, we need to pay special attention and
be especially focused on obedience. Take some time to read and pray through Deuteronomy 6:5;
10:12; 11:1; 11:13; 11:22; 30:16; Joshua 22:5; 1 Corinthians 8:3; and 1 John 5:3.
PRAYER; Father, we come to You today filled with a deep longing for more of You than we have yet
experienced in our lifetime. There is always more of You to experience…a never-ending well of love
and grace to be drawn from. Yet, we waste time in our worldly pursuits and pleasures. Convict our
hearts of our deep need for all that You are and allow us to rest continually in Your Presence.
Prayer Points
Praise God as the one who lifts your soul up from the depths of despair and discouragement (Ps.
42:5). Thank him for being your Savior and your God. Confess those times when you’ve chosen not
to allow God to wipe away the tears of distress. Commit yourself to praising God every day for his
tender mercies. Ask God to keep you from becoming downcast in your soul.
Ask God to cause many around the world today to “put their hope in God” (Psalm 42:5) and thus
be able to confess with believers in every land “my Savior and my God” (Psalm 42:11).

Trip went well; I stayed in Carolyn's old youth minister's vacation condo about 30 minutes from John and Mike. I went every
morning to help Mike. Got to meet Laura and her family, nice family, and she is very funny. She talks by computer which she uses
her eyes to type, very cool. She thanked me for bringing her dad/brother out to see her as she had given up hope of ever seeing
them again. That made the trip worth it for me.—Lance

West Side Church of Christ,
Thank you so much for all your prayers before and after surgery. I also want to thank you for your thoughtfulness for the food
that was provided before surgery when I could not stand and be on my feet. My recovery was much slower than expected due to
secondary issues from surgery but after much PT (physical therapy) I am making great progress. It has been a rough couple of
months not knowing if I would gain enough mobility to have some normalcy back on my life but knowing so many were praying
for me gave me such comfort and strength it has kept me going.
I still have several months until my fusion is completely healed but I am grateful everyday for the progress I am making and for
all of your prayers.
Thank You,
Bea Arnold and family

Now is a great time to purchase items to pack a shoe box. Suggested items to include are: school
supplies such as crayons, markers, pencils, manual pencil sharpener; wrapped individual candies
(no chocolate or items that might melt); toiletries such as wash cloth, bar of soap, small plastic cup,
toothbrush and toothpaste; fun items such as stickers, coloring books, yo-yo, hot wheel cars. Plastic
shoe boxes are a plus. Many children carry their boxes for a long time; some use them to carry
water back to their homes.
