This ABM will provide much-needed relief to Rylander and West Memorial elementary schools, as well as, balance enrollment as the District prepares to open two elementary schools and one junior high next school year. During this entire process, the District welcomed feedback from the community through an online survey. Nearly 9,000 parents, staff and community members completed the survey and dozens shared their feedback during the open forum at various Board meetings. These comments helped shape the ABM and addressed major needs and concerns cited by parents and community. The District presented to the Board a preliminary ABM proposal on November 16 and then an updated option on December 7 to better address the overcrowding at West Memorial Elementary. The Board approved the updated ABM option on December 14. The District estimates that approximately 3,600 students will be impacted by the approved attendance boundary modifications. Katy ISD will be notifying all impacted families in January/February 2016. For more information about the ABM process, including maps of the approved attendance boundary modifications, visit the District's ABM webpage at http://www. katyisd.org/Pages/ABM.aspx. Thieves stole mail from two Katy-area post office collection boxes recently, according to a postal inspector.

A note taped onto a box located on Fourth Street in Historic Downtown Katy warns residents who use that outdoor box to monitor their banking accounts closely.

The postal inspector thinks the same mail thieves stole from another mail collection box located on Baker Road. The metal lock is broken on that mailbox, and the mail slot is covered with cardboard and tape.

Investigators are reviewing security video from the Baker Road location to try to identify the thieves. If you have any information that could help, call 877-876-2455.

She will discuss ways of achieving a healthier brain by focusing on nutritional health. Amazing Place Houston is a day center for adults with mild to moderate dementia. It is the first day program in the country and the only facility outside of Massachusetts to implement the brain-healthy nutrition program, Memory Preservation Nutrition™, for its participants. Developed by the Brain Health and Wellness Center®, the nutrition program incorporates foods and nutrients shown to improve overall brain health, reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, and slow the progression of the disease in those who have been diagnosed.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Cinco Ranch Branch Library at 281-395-1311 or the library system’s Public Information Office at 281-633-4734.

Vegetarian Or Vegan Curious?

The decision to pursue a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle may be made for health reasons or as an ecological choice. Fort Bend County Libraries will have an informational program for people who would like to learn more about these lifestyle choices on Saturday, January 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Meeting Room of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

In the program, “Vegetarian or Vegan Curious?,” hear from Katy/West Houston Vegan Meetup members Cathy Plato, Kristen Lee Ohanyan, and Tosh Schurz, who will provide an overview of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. Learn the difference between vegan and vegetarian diets, reasons people make these dietary decisions, and how to find healthy and delicious alternative foods.

Those attending the program will get ideas on how to create meals that are tasty and easy to make, and that provide the nutrients and protein one needs for a healthy diet. A sample menu of a week’s worth of meals and recipes, as well as local grocery resources, will be available. The presenters will offer suggestions on how to get started with this new alternative diet, gradually eliminating dairy and meat from one’s diet. Learn about support networks in the area and how to maintain the diet while dining out.

Cathy Plato has been a vegetarian “on and off” for many years, and made the decision to commit to a vegan diet two years ago at the encouragement of her adult daughter. An ethical vegan since 2003, Kristen Lee Ohanyan has been a human-rights activist for decades. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology with a minor in Cultural Anthropology.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Cinco Ranch Branch Library at 281-395-1311 or the library system’s Public Information Office at 281-633-4734.

Learn How To Attract Birds To Your Yard With the diverse ecological systems that are represented in Texas, the state has

become known for the unparalleled bird-watching opportunities that can be found in the different areas of the state. Because birding is easy for all ages to enjoy, it is a popular family activity that can lead to a lifelong hobby.

Fort Bend County Libraries will present a program on attracting birds at a special program, “Bringing the Birds Home,” on Thursday, January 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m., in the Meeting Room of the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

Mary Anne Weber, Education Director of the Houston Audubon Society, will talk about ways to attract birds to one’s yard by planting beneficial plants and providing feeders and houses. Learn about both the better- and lesser-known birds that can be found in our area, and how to identify and classify all of them. Weber will bring an assortment of live birds to show during her presentation about the amazing world of birds that can be found in our region of Texas.

Weber has been teaching with live birds for 30 years, and became the Education Director of the Houston Audubon Society in 1999. She directs the Houston Audubon’s Sims Bayou Nature Center and is the caretaker of the birds that accompany her to her presentations. She specializes in raptors (owls and hawks), but loves teaching about all types of birds. She also has a passion for photography and leads the Houston Audubon Nature Photography Association.

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library. Proceeds from the Friends of the Library book sales and annual membership dues help to underwrite the costs of special programming and various cultural events at the library.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library at 281-633-4675 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-633-4734.

After the Holiday Storms have rummaged through the Dallas Metroplex, The American Red Cross has been on the ground to assist the victims affected in Collin, Dallas and Ellis Counties. The American Red Cross of Texas Gulf Coast Region was called upon to assist with the deployment of Emergency Response Vehicles. These vehicles distributed clean-up supplies such as tarps, shovels, rakes, work gloves, trash bags, etc. to help families begin to sift through their belongings and salvage what they can.

Disaster victims who need Red Cross services should call 1-800-RED-CROSS. People wanting to volunteer should seek information from city and county websites in the affected areas. Red Cross volunteer opportunities are always available at www.redcross.org.

The best way to help the American Red Cross is through a financial donation which allows the organization to be ready before emergencies, and to respond afterwards. Donations can be made online at www.redcross.org or by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10.

Libraries Announce Family Reading Club

The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens, and adults inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club will begin on Sunday, January 24, and will continue for six weeks through March 5, at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system.

This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn, and have fun together. Families participate in the program by reading books and completing optional “challenges” that can be done at home. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate.

“The best way to help children learn new words and to build a larger vocabulary is to talk and read with them,” says Susan King, Coordinator of Youth Services for the library system. “Children hear more new words when you read books to them.”

Families that complete the program by reading 36 books or for 6 hours – 6 books per week or for 60 minutes per week – are eligible to receive a book bag for the family, and will have their name entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library.

The drawing for the gift card will take place on March 7, and one winning family will be selected from each branch library.

A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 24. Families may also register at any of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time.

There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system.

For more information, call the library system’s Public Information Office at 281-633-4734, or the library branch nearest you.

Libraries Hold Free “Act” & “Sat” Practice-Test Sessions For College-Bound Students

Representatives from Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions will conduct free ACT® and SAT® practice-test sessions at Fort Bend County Libraries in January.

The ACT and SAT tests are college-entrance exams used by U.S. colleges to assess high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work, as well as to determine admissions and award scholarships and grants. The full-length practice-test sessions help students to gain experience and become better prepared for the actual test.

The ACT® test is a multiple-choice test covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science, with an optional writing test. The practice test takes just over 4 hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., including administration instructions and breaks. Students are encouraged to bring two #2 pencils and a non-graphing calculator. The January schedule of ACT practice-test sessions is as follows:

• January 9 – Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Blvd, Katy.

In March 2016, a new version of the SAT will be launched by the College Board. This new test will affect the graduating class of 2017. The SAT practice-test session in January will be for the NEW version. The SAT® test is three hours and 30 minutes long, and consists of three sections – Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. The practice test takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., including administration and breaks. Students should bring two #2 pencils and a non-graphing calculator.

The January schedule of SAT practice-test sessions for the NEW version is as follows:

• January 23 – George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond.

The sessions are free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Calendar,” select the library, and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the libraries: George Memorial Library (281-342-4455), Cinco Ranch Branch Library (281-395-1311).

The Tale For Katy In 2015 Was DefenseBy Tom Behrens

After defeating Steele 38-0 at Alamo Stadium, the Tigers notched its tenth shutout in 15 games and then went on to capture the 6A Division I State Championship defeating Austin Lake Travis 34-7.

Ways of describing the 2015 Katy Tigers football this year …dominant, this year’s edition of the annual powerhouse, and a band of brothers. When excellence becomes tradition, greatness has no limits. It’s playing “lights out” football, a team effort from both offense and defense with both offense and defense finding the “creases in our opponents, and coming out ready to play.”

“It’s been a long time coming, losing (in the finals) the past two years,” senior safety Travis Whillock said. “The brotherhood that we had, and the coaches that we have, it was just so strong this year, and we were so determined. We knew that if we stepped on the field with anybody, with our coaches’ game plan, we were going to win.”

This season the Tigers kept five straight opponents off the scoreboard. They allowed 55 total points, an average of 3.7 per game, and trailed only twice, once

against The Woodlands, and Cypress Ranch. They have never trailed in the second half.

Collin Wilder was quoted as saying this was the best defense that Katy has ever had. “I am confident in our defense. I believe this is the best defense because how hard we worked, and how much we wanted to still get better. If they don’t score, they don’t win.”

Head coach, Gary Joseph said the defense was a cut above all others because of the returning experience. “For a core of defensive starters, the championship game was their 48th varsity game. We had five kids that are three-year starters on defense. They were starters in a state championship game as sophomores.” The group includes linebackers Paddy Fisher and Jovanni Stewart, defensive backs Collin Wilder and Travis Whillock along with nose tackle Joey Woodring. Safety Collin Wilder played in his 64th high school football game for the Tigers against Lake Travis. Defensive end Michael Matus made an impact as a sophomore. Corey Bethley, a 260 pound junior lineman was named District 19-6A’s top newcomer last year. This year he was named to the Houston Chronicle First Team Defense.

Katy Tigers Ranked Number One In The U.S.

The AP preseason poll ranked Katy Number three in the Class 6A top 10, behind Allen and DeSoto but ahead of Cedar Hill. Allen was the three time defending champion. In other media outlets Texas Football had Katy at number two in 6A. Maxpreps.com ranked Katy number four in the state and number 11 in the nation in its Xcellent 25 Writers’ Poll and number 19 in its national computer ranking. Also according to Maxpreps, Manvel was ranked number one in Region III, one spot ahead of Katy, with Cinco Ranch making the cut at number 10.

At the end of the season MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Football poll declares there was not a high school team better than Katy. The Tigers ascended to the No. 1 spot in the final ranking following their 34-7 victory against Austin Lake Travis in the Class 6A Division II championship game.

Katy finished ahead of Colquitt County (Moultrie, Georgia), De La Salle (Concord, California), Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nevada) and Centennial (Corona, California) in the top five. The Tigers were ranked No. 3 entering the final week and No. 5 before defeating Manvel and undefeated teams Cibolo Steele and Lake Travis in succession.

In the USA Today Super 25 final poll, Bishop Gorman repeated as national champion. Katy was No. 5 in the experts’ poll, preceded by Colquitt County, De La Salle and IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida). USA Today’s computer rankings had Katy at No. 1 entering the state final.

Katy Tigers’ ranking in TexasTexas fared well in the Xcellent 25, with Katy No. 1 in Division

I. Lake Travis finished No. 9, 6A Division, North Shore No. 10, Austin Westlake No. 11 and Allen No. 12.

Katy had the top defense in Texas Class 6A by a wide margin allowing 62 points in 16 games for an average of 3.9 per game while posting 10 shutouts. The Woodlands had the second-best defense with 109 points allowed in 12 games, a 9.1 average. Pearland (10.2), Alief Taylor (10.3), Odessa Permian (10.7) and Lamar (10.9) were the only other 6A defenses comparable.

Manvel led 6A in total points scored with 781 in 14 games, an impressive average of 55.8. Katy, Lake Travis and Allen were the only other teams to top 700, while McAllen Memorial averaged 55.2 points in 12 games.

Coach Joseph to be Inducted in the Texas High School Hall of Fame

“It humbles you a lot,” Joseph said after the announcement. “Really and truthfully, I hadn’t thought about it because I have some other things on my mind right now. But looking back on it, I’m sure I’ll be real thrilled about it. It’s a great compliment to Katy High School.” Joseph found out about his selection prior to the state championship game with Austin Lake Travis.

The Hall of Fame, which is housed at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, will have its induction for the 2016 class May 7 at the Ferrell Center in Waco.

Coach Joseph began his coaching career at Luling High School 37 years ago. After advancing in jobs at Brazosport and Austin Westlake, he then moved to Katy High School where he has served for 34 years – 22 of those years as Mike Johnston’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.

Joseph has been the Tigers’ head coach since 2004, replacing Johnston when he retired. Coach Johnston started in 1982. He helped Katy win three titles before taking over and turning the Tigers into one of the nation’s best football programs.

Katy is 167-14 in Joseph’s 12 seasons, winning three championships and playing in five more state finals.

The win over Lake Travis gave the Tigers eight titles and pushed them into a tie for first with Celina and Southlake Carroll for most UIL championships.

“He is a legend,” said new UIL athletic director Susan Elza. “He is a great example for all coaches across the state and for us to see him inducted to the Hall of Fame is an honor that is so well-deserved, and it’s on such a big stage.”

Joseph’s numerous honors include being named American Football Monthly’s high school football National Coach of the Year in 2012 and twice a Touchdown Club of Houston’s Coach of the Year. The Tigers have 11 district championships in Joseph’s 12 seasons and haven’t lost a game in district play since 2008.

“From the administration to our AD’s office, it all goes together to create a program,” Joseph said. “Most of it, it’s a compliment to our kids. They’re the ones that got me here.”

At the award banquet the 2015 state championship coaches will be honored. The Gordon Wood Award will be presented to a deserving high school and the Texas High School Coaches Association will present the 2016 Tom Landry Award to an outstanding coach.

In other Katy ISD fall sportsIt wasn’t just about football. Other player were honored for

their accomplishments. Jacque Lozier at Taylor High School was singled out for her play against Deer Park with a career high 25 kills with a .478 hitting percentage in the Mustangs’ five-set victory. “I’ve really seen a confidence in her in the past couple of weeks,” said Mustang coach, Brooke Plemons. “She’s really taken ownership of the team and trying to lead the team and be positive and motivating on the court and bringing lots of energy to the team.”

Check out three different entertaining nature activities on the Katy Prairie Jan. 9 for adult learners only, as the Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) presents Ranger Trek and two Wild West Tours. Birders may find it difficult to choose just one event, since all relate to our fine-feathered friends.

“Winter is a wonderful time to explore the Katy Prairie,” says Christine Mansfield, KPC’s Community Outreach Manager. “We encourage folks to start off the New Year by appreciating what nature has to offer with one or more of our exciting events.”

The events require advance registration on katyprairie.org by clicking the “Visit” tab to find “Events.” Walking shoes, clothing layers, gloves and a hat are recommended, since the prairie tends to be chillier and windier than an urban setting. Participants are also encouraged to bring water, cameras, binoculars, and snacks, if desired. For information go to our website or call 713-523-6135. Directions to Indiangrass Preserve are also available.

The Katy Prairie Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving an ecologically vital tallgrass prairie and associated wetlands area on Houston’s far west side for the enjoyment and benefit of all. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @katyprairie.

These Sandhill Cranes can be found on Katy Prairie Conservancy’s preserves. Photo by Mac Womack.

The three events will begin at KPC’s Indiangrass Preserve, 31950 Hebert Road in Waller. They include:

Ranger Trek: For the Birds from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. In 2013 the Katy Prairie was designated a Global

Important Bird Area in recognition of the prairie’s bird diversity and the critical role that the prairie plays in bird migration. Learn how KPC is saving and improving bird habitat and take a hike in a newly restored prairie-wetland habitat searching for waterfowl and predatory birds. Cost: Free.

Wild West Tour: “Winter Birds” – 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Sparrows, hawks, harriers, ducks, geese, and even Bald Eagles flock to the Katy Prairie during the winter months. For this exclusive tour, you’ll start at the Indiangrass Preserve and then join bird expert Glenn Olsen as he leads the group to several preserves usually closed to the general public. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today. Cost: $50.

Wild West Tour: Owl Prowl and Coyote Howl – 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Join Master Naturalist Glenn Olsen, for a brisk winter evening on the Katy Prairie. After a light dinner, you’ll be able to look and listen for elusive owls as they hunt on silent wings for their own dinner on some of KPC’s private preserves. You might also hear coyotes howling. Cost: $50.

Events require advance registration on katyprairie.org by clicking the “Visit” tab to find “Events.”

Thank You For Making A Difference

Because of your support, Hope For Three has been blessed with over $27,000 in contributions for our End of the Year Campaign, Hope For the Holidays. Together, we are creating the opportunities our kids on the autism spectrum need in order to live healthy full lives into the New Year and beyond. There is still time to make an impact in 2016 by providing support and assistance to families in Fort Bend County with children living on the autism spectrum.

This past year, over 3,000 Fort Bend County Public School children were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum

Disorder. With an annual cost of care surpassing $180,000,000 many of these families are unable to provide the imperative intervention services that improves the short term and long term quality of life for their kids. Hope For Three continues to provide a safety net for families who are unable to afford these important services through its Family Assistance Program.

Hope For Three addresses the urgent need to provide support, including financial assistance to children with an autism spectrum disorder. Our primary purpose is to bridge the gap between families and providers so children have access to high-quality treatment at the earliest stage of life possible. Our mission is to reach one child, one family, one community by creating awareness and providing support to families with autism spectrum disorder and to create an inclusive positive social change where each child’s unique abilities are acknowledged and fostered.
