of the century Emil Clemens Horst—the world’s largest producer of hops—had hundreds of acres planted. The cultivation of hops boomed, until Prohibition, a downy mildew blight, and a decrease in demand in the 1950s resulted in the last farms being plowed under to plant food crops or wine grapes.

The microbrew situation in Mendocino County—and the United States in general—remained bleak until the 1980s, when changing legislation and a renewed interest in artisanal brews led to a resurgence in the popularity of small-batch, localized brewers. Leading the charge in California, and the nation, was the Mendocino Brewing Company, followed by Anderson Valley, North Coast and Ukiah Brewing Companies.

the same old boast will come up: their state has the most breweries per capita of any state in the nation—a whopping one brewery per 32,698 people. It’s an impressive number, but not as impressive as this: one brewery per 21,566 people. That’s the ratio here in Mendocino County. And if rumors of a new brewery in Hopland turn out to be true, the county could boast a single brewery for every 17,253 people—even more than Portland’s per-capita record of one per 20,849 people.

Mendocino County has a long love affair with beer, so the prevalence of microbreweries should come as no surprise. Perhaps nothing echoes this history as strongly as the mere existence of the town of Hopland—and while hops may no longer be grown in the area, as you might expect, they were once a major crop. The town changed its name in 1891 to honor the industry, and by the turn

NCBC’s brewery facility is across Main Street from its restaurant in Fort Bragg. B. McGuigan photo.

The grounds of the Mendocino Brewing Company. Brendan McGuigan photo.

Company started out small—with its flagship Red Seal Ale—and has since grown into one of the most award-winning microbreweries in the country, producing fifteen beers available throughout the United States and around the world.

Although NCBC is small by some standards, it has a lot to be proud of. The Beverage Tasting Institute named it one of the ten best breweries in the world, it took two gold medals in the 2010 World Beer Championships, and its Old Rasputin Imperial Stout is constantly one of the highest-rated beers—ranging from a 97 at the Beverage Tasting Institute, to a 100 at RateBeer.

The brewery has long outgrown its original space, and a larger, modern facility can be found across the street. The original brewing area has been converted to a gift shop, attached to the brewpub—one of the oldest continually-operating brewpubs in the United States. There, patrons can enjoy the beer-battered fish and chips that were on the menu when the restaurant opened in 1988, an assortment of steaks, seafood, barbecue, and a sampler of the NCBC’s many beers.

The team at NCBC is passionate about jazz, and nothing makes that clearer than their award-winning Belgian-style dark ale, Brother Thelonius. Graced with Anderson Valley resident Eduardo Smissen’s reimagining of Thelonius Monk in full monastic garb on the label, part of the proceeds of sales of this beer go to support the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz, which provides jazz education to young musicians. The NCBC is also the official brewery of the Monterey Jazz Festival – the oldest continuously-running jazz festival in the world.

Beer historians may be surprised to see the NCBC producing beer under the old Acme label. Founded in San Francisco in 1907, as an offshoot of Olympia, Acme was one of the nation’s best-known beers. Acme survived Prohibition by switching to the manufacture of ‘near beer’, or low-alcohol beers that met the strict requirements of the law. When Prohibition ended,

Acme had weathered the storm well, and was the first brewery in the nation to begin advertising true beer again.

Throughout their existence, Acme remained at the forefront of the marketing game—from beautiful early labels, to positioning themselves as a healthful beverage in the lead-up to Prohibition, to pioneering the marketing of ‘dietetically non-fattening’ beer to women in the 1930s, to pushing larger ‘Victory size’ bottles during WWII as a way of conserving bottlecaps. Sadly,

even their innovative marketing was not enough to fight off the growing consolidation of national breweries, and by 1954 their San Francisco plant had stopped producing Acme.

The brand bounced around for years, until resurfacing as a contract beer in 1975, and being sold from brewery to brewery, finally sinking along with the Xcelsior Brewery in Santa Rosa in 1987. It remained unproduced, until in 1996 the North Coast Brewing Company acquired the rights to the brand, and brought it truly back to life.

The modern Acme label retains the same flair for advertising that it showcased more than a century ago, and the beer is a crisp, clean pale ale, brewed with Yakima hops, and a blend of American and British malt.

The Acme story can be explored more at the brewery, which features a gift shop and museum. Brewery tours are also available by appointment.

Mendocino Brewing coMpanyFounded in 1983, the Mendocino Brewing Company was the first craft brewer in California, and the

second in the United States—preceding the much more widely known Sierra Nevada by nearly four years. Best known for their flagship Red Tail Lager, the Mendocino Brewing Company also widely distributes Black Hawk Stout, Blue Heron Pale Ale, White Hawk IPA, and the Eye of the Hawk.

In the beginning, the Mendocino Brewing Company was a true mecca among beer aficionados. In those early days there were no other artisan brews available, and to get a coveted six-pack of Mendocino beer meant an (often long) drive to Hopland. With no real distribution network in place for craft breweries, the amount of Mendocino beer you would have on hand would be limited by just how much of the massively overweight bottles you were willing to lug to your car for the long drive home. Their brewpub—the Hopland Brewery—was a landmark for a movement just beginning, and as others followed in their footsteps, it remained a mythic destination.

This is truly one of the great success stories of the county—and of the microbrew movement in general. Starting from humble roots in a small brick building in Hopland, the Mendocino Brewing Company has grown to a nationally-distributed regional brewery, producing more than fifty thousand barrels a year in both their Ukiah-based facility, and their Saratoga Springs facility in New York, with distribution to forty-one states.

Sadly, along the way the Hopland Brewery shut its doors, marking the end of one of the oldest chapters in America’s nascent brewpub landscape. It’s not all bleak, though—in December the Mendocino Brewing Company announced they were fast approaching the opening of a new pub. The Mendocino Brewing Ale House will be located just down the road from the manufacturing facility, on Airport Park Boulevard, in Ukiah.

FORT BRAGG WHALE FESTIVALThe celebration is all about the annual fi ve thousand-mile migration of the Pacifi c Gray Whale with their newborn calves from the protected lagoons of western Baja to their ancestral feeding grounds in the cold waters of the Bering Sea. The migrating whales, numbering eighteen thousand to twenty-three thousand individuals, pass by the Mendocino Coast twice each year; once going south between the months of November and February, and again going north between the months of February and June. Since they don’t migrate simultaneously, not all the whales make it all the way to Baja. Some linger off shore and observations suggest that these are primarily the younger males. Newly pregnant females lead the northward migration, followed by males.

The California Gray Whale travels the longest distance on migration of any mammal. This species is the only whale whose year-round habits and whereabouts are well known.

Examinations of the stomachs of whales during the whaling days indicated that gray whales eat very little while migrating and while in calving areas. Thus, many whales may go without food for three to fi ve months.

The animals travel south to the three major breeding and calving lagoons on the west coast of Baja California, Mexico: Laguna Ojo de Libre, San Ignacio Lagoon (also known as Scammon’s Lagoon), and Magdalena Bay. Captain Charles Scammon charted many of these areas in the mid-1800s as he hunted gray whales.

The northbound migration begins with immature animals (some of which may not have gone all the way to Mexico), adult males, and females without calves. Breeding sometimes is observed at this time.

Calves usually are rambunctious but stay close to their mothers as they become more coordinated and develop an insulating blubber layer. Calves are at least a month old before they migrate north with their mothers. Mothers and calves are the last to leave the lagoons and move somewhat more slowly.

During the spring migration, if the weather is good, you can see whales within a few hundred yards of coastal headlands.

The full round-trip migration from the Baja calving lagoons to the Bering Sea and back is 10,000 miles (16,000 km), the longest known for any mammal. Other whales also are known to migrate between summer high latitude feeding grounds and more temperate low latitude breeding and calving areas. However, researchers know more about the gray whale because it moves so close to shore. This near-shore movement has led to speculation that gray whales navigate by staying in shallow water or keeping the surf noises to one side or the other depending upon their direction of travel.

Although the Mendocino Brewing Company doesn’t offer open tours, those interested can call ahead to schedule a guided tour of the manufacturing facility. With a computer-controlled system, a massive warehouse, a full assembly line, and a maximum production capacity of nearly 200,000 barrels a year, it’s by far the most technologically-advanced operation in Mendocino County, and well worth a visit.

Anderson VAlley Brewing CompAnyWithin a few short years of the Mendocino Brewing Company opening their doors, a

handful of other breweries sprang up around the state—the vanguard of what would soon be a microbrew revolution. One of the first was the Anderson Valley Brewing Company.

Located downstairs in the historic Buckhorn Saloon, the AVBC was born—like many microbreweries of the era—out of a driving need to create a specific type of beer. In the case of Ken Allen, the original owner and brewmaster, that was a smoother ale than anything available at the time. Within a year the first beers went to market, and they were an immediate success.

Best known for their Boont Amber Ale, the AVBC now produces the Hop Ottin’ IPA, the Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, Brother David’s Abbey Style Ale, and a range of specialty and seasonal brews.

By the mid-1990s the AVBC had grown too big for the saloon basement that was its birthplace, and work began on a larger space. Within a few years even that larger space proved too small, and a Bavarian-style brewhouse was built. The brewhouse is now the centerpiece of the AVBC’s beautiful property near the corner of Highway 128 and Highway 253, which features picnic areas, pasture land, and a disc golf course. Leaders in the green-brewing movement, the AVBC property also has a photovoltaic array providing up to 125kW, the largest array north of San Francisco, and the largest in any brewery in the United States.

A visit to the Anderson Valley wouldn’t be complete without dipping at least a bit into the local folk language, Boontling, and there are few places to better try harpin’ Boontling than at the brewery tasting room. Employees will gladly teach you a few phrases, and even try a back and forth with you—as well as helping you translate the sometimes cryptic snatches of Boontling that can be found on your bottlecaps. While you’re at it, you might take a closer look at the official mascot of the brewery, a bear with horns, affectionately nicknamed Barkley. What is he? He’s a rare hybrid of bear and deer—a beer, of course.

The AVBC offers guided tours seven days a week (excepting winter), between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Their tap room is open seven days a day week (also excepting winter) from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

UkiAh Brewing CompAnyThe youngest of Mendocino County’s microbreweries, the Ukiah Brewing Company is

nonetheless a star in its own right. Founded in 1999 by Els and Allen Cooperrider, it was turning heads from day one.

Responsible living is the cornerstone of the UBC—and it shows in every facet of the brewery, and the associated restaurant. The building is a beautiful nineteenth century space on the corner of State Street in Ukiah, and was lovingly crafted by the owners and their sons. From the sustainably-harvested wood floor, put in by Allen, to the recycled antique bar, salvaged from the historic Palace Hotel.

Perhaps most impressive is the commitment to organic, sustainable food and beer production. In 2001 the brewpub was granted CCOF [California Certified Organic Farmers] certification—making it the first certified-organic brewpub and the second certified-organic eatery in the entire country. The job of finding organic suppliers for every ingredient is no small feat—but it’s one the Cooperriders have tackled with incredible success. The menu spans a wide range of tastes—from vegan portabella steaks and veggie burgers for those who eschew meat, to grass-fed beef, Rosie chicken, and fish sandwiches for those more carnivorously inclined.

Sustainability doesn’t just stop with recycling and organic food, however, and at the UBC it extends to social sustainability. The restaurant and pub have become a hub of the community—and the entire county—with live events every night, ranging from local jams, to karaoke, to headliners from San Francisco and beyond.

With all of that, it’s easy to get distracted from the brewing itself—but the beer should not be under-estimated by any means. With much smaller production than any of the other breweries in Mendocino County—around four hundred barrels—if you haven’t sought them out, it’s entirely possible you’ve never even tasted a Ukiah brew. That’s unfortunate, because they are some of the most remarkable sustainable beers available in the nation.

The Ukiah Brewing Company produces ten beers, ranging from the Pilsner Ukiah to the Orr Springs IPA to the Point Arena Pale Ale to the Emancipator doppelbock. The restaurant and bar are open seven days a week, and although public tours are not generally available, it’s possible to call ahead and schedule a walk-through.

March, 2011 Thurs. 03/17Born YesterdayThe 2011 season of the Mendocino Theatre Company opens with a bang with Garson Kanin’s much beloved comedy Born Yesterday. Set in Washington, D.C. in post-war 1945, the play made a star out of Judy Holliday in the iconic role of Billie Dawn. It ran on Broadway to sold-out houses for four years before being released as a movie in 1950 with William Holden and Broderick Crawford joining Ms. Holliday as investigative reporter Paul Verrall and millionaire junkman Harry Brock. While, the play’s story of corruption at the highest places of government has remained disturbingly ap-propriate over the years, it is the Pygmalion-like tale of Billie’s metamorphosis from dumb blonde to self-aware, informed woman that has endeared the story to generations of theatre-goers. In MTC’s production, directed by Bob Cohen, singer-songwriter Rosy Nolan gives a bravura performance as Billie Dawn, with vet-eran actors Mark Friedrich and Milo Young co-starring as Harry Brock and Paul Verrall. • Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. with 2:00 p.m. Sunday mati-nees on March 20, April 10, and April 17. • Special pre-view nights, March 17, 18 cost $10. Help Otsuchi: A Letter from the Mayor

Our sister city, Otsuchi, has been destroyed. Out of a population of 17,000 people, over 10,000 people are missing in Otsuchi town. Last night on the news it was called “The Lost City.” The Mayor and the 20-member Assembly were making emergency response plans when the tsunami swept though the two-story city hall, taking windows, doors and people with it. Only the Deputy Mayor and 20 staff that the Mayor sent to the roof survived. Ten years ago, the folks in the township of Otsuchi looked straight out across

the Pacific on the 39th parallel and, there was Fort Bragg, small remote town like Otsuchi with a salmon fishing heritage. They sent a delegation to California and our sister city relationship began. The next year students from both cities visited the other and our cultural exchange program began. The next visit from Otsuchi students and adults was to have been in July this year. In 2005 I went to Otsuchi to sign our Sister City Agreement. Our hearts are breaking and we wonder what can we do? We have started a fund

to directly assist the survivors in Otsuchi. I have ordered that our flags be flown at half mast until the end of March to honor the lost souls in our sister city. Information about Otsuchi can be found at our Otsuchi-Fort Bragg Cultural Ex-

change Program which is linked from our city website: http://city.fortbragg.com Dave TurnerMayor of Fort Bragg, CAwww.fortbragg.com • [email protected] • 707 964-3356

Here’s are other organizations helping in the relief effort:

World Vision [donate.worldvision.org] — is accepting donations and will rush food, water, medical supplies, and shelter through their Disaster Response Fund. The Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund [www.globalgiving.org/projects/japan-earthquake-tsunami-relief] — Launched immediately by GlobalGiving.org.Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California [www.jcccnc.org] — The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, is pledging 100 percent of all donations. Also, Buddhist Churches of America are another conduit for earthquake & tsunami relief in Japan. Send to OBT, 3720 S.E. 34th Ave., Portland, OR 97202. Please make out the check to “OBT” and put “tsunami relief Japan” in the notation section.”

Many organizations are raising funds for Japan at this time. Please donate to the organization of your choice.
