Page 2: VOLUME 24 • ISSUE 11 • DECEMBER • 2015...2015/12/12  · your efforts in 2015 and letʼs gear up for another successful year in 2016! When I started thinking about what to write

Dear Chamber members,Itʼs been quite a year for the Massillon WestStarkChamber of Commerce—rebranding with our newname and logo, 100th anniversary celebrations, a revitalized growing membership, a hugely successful and well-attended Annual Dinner, arecord setting year for attendance at BCL lunchesand the list could go on. Thank you to all ofyou—members, staff, Board, volunteers—for your efforts in 2015 and letʼs gear up for anothersuccessful year in 2016!When I started thinking about what to write forthis column, I looked up year-end quotes hopingto find some inspiration. Rather than inspirationfor my column, I found some very interesting foodfor thought as we approach the end of the year.Perhaps one of these will inspire you to greatersuccess in 2016.Yearʼs end is neither an end nor a beginning buta going on, with all the wisdom that experiencecan instill in us. —Hal Borland Every time you tear a leaf off a calendar, youpresent a new place for new ideas and progress.—Charles KetteringI hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying newthings, learning, living, pushing yourself, changingyourself, changing your world. Youʼre doing things

youʼve never done before, and more importantly, youʼre doing something. —Neil Gaiman Celebrate what you want to see more of. —Tom Peters Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. —Ralph Waldo Emerson Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. —Dr. SeussTwenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didnʼt dothan by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. —Attributed to MarkTwain, but it cannot be verifiedBest wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season and for a successful 2016!Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve our Massillon WestStark Chamber of Commerce!

At last monthʼs committee meeting, Josh Prest, N.E.District Representative for Senator Rob Portmanattended and gave a great presentation on somethings happening on the national level. Recently, the Bipartisan Budget Act passed the U.S. House and Senate to again raise the debt ceiling to avoiddefault. Senator Portmanʼs End GovernmentShutdowns Act failed as an amendment to the budget. This amendment would have ended thepractice of government shutdowns by enacting last-minute appropriations to avoid shutdown.Senator Portman also recently introduced bills dealing with protecting Ohioansʼ pensions, expandingdrug prevention and education, and renewing theSecond Chance Act, which aims at reducing recidivismrates by continuing funding for reentry programs atthe state and local levels. In recent election news, the Legislative AffairsCommittee is pleased that Ohio voters supportedIssue 2 while voting down Issue 3. We will probablysee the issue of legalizing marijuana again sometimein 2016, but we feel strongly that Ohioans made theright decisions on these important issues as theywere presented last month. Also, congratulations tothe Massillon Public Library and the Fairless LocalSchools for passage of their respective ballot initiatives. Educational systems and institutions supporting education are important to the continueddevelopment of western Stark County.
