Summer fi nally hit us in the weekend of 14 and 15 July, which is something most of us have been waiting a long time for. But where do you go to swim and cool off when you are located in the middle of Northern Europe?

The base pool is a good answer. The pool on base is a nice and family friendly place to spend a warm

summer day. In addition to the main pool area, it also offers a closed area with a small playground, trees that can provide a much-needed break in the shade and a children’s pool with a slide.

“We make good use of the pool. I lap swim during the week and my family enjoys it on weekends,” says Major Gary Gualano, Deputy

Financial Controller for the E-3A Component. “My daughter loves it. She’d stay in the water until her skin fell off if we let her.”

The pool is open daily from 1100 until 1900. The entrance fee is 1,50 euro. There is free admission for children ages 6 and under. Workdays from 1100 to 1300 the pool is reserved for working Component members and lap swimming. No entrance fee is required during that time frame.

The construction of the pool dates back to the fi fties, when the British Royal Air Force originally built the base. That is why the measurements are a little ‘strange’; instead of the ‘normal’ European length of 25 metres, the base pool is 31.20 metres long, which equals 100 feet. So that is the reason why your lap swimming may be a little harder here.

Terry ran 42 kilometres every day for cancer research By Capt. Dan Rueger

Terry Fox of British Columbia, Canada, was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer). His right leg was amputated 15 cm above the knee. While in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada, more than 8,500 km from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacifi c Ocean, to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the ‘Marathon of Hope’.

With little fanfare, Terry began his run 12 April 1980 on Canada’s east coast. Although it was diffi cult to garner attention in the beginning enthusiasm grew and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran 42 km every day (the distance of a marathon) through Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario. On 1 September 1980, after 143 consecutive running days and 5,373 km, Terry was forced to end his run when the primary cancer spread to his lungs. Terry died on 28 June 1981 at 22 years of age. Terry was gone, but his legacy was just the beginning.

The Terry Fox Foundation continues to share the story of Terry Fox and raises money for cancer research. People around the world learn about Terry, that their lives might be enriched by his example and that they might derive inspiration from his courage. In Canada, over 1000 communities and 4800 schools hold a Terry Fox Run annually. Internationally, more than 50 countries organize their own Terry Fox Run. Last Year €13,750 was raised in the Geilenkirchen area and the money went to the German Cancer Help Foundation (Deutsche Krebshilfe e. V.).

This year’s ‘Terry Fox Campaign’ begins early in August, with donation jars at all the NATEX outlets. Additionally, the campaign consists of three events, the fi rst being the Terry Fox Charity Car Wash, which is being held on Friday, 3 August and Saturday, 4 August at the Motor Pool on the NATO Airbase. The NATO Component will see a gang of energetic and enthusiastic campaigners participating in the Terry Fox 24hr Challenge starting at 1300 on Saturday, 25 August. If you would like to register a team or sponsor one of the teams running in this relay, contact Capt. Serge Palin at ext. 4423 or Capt. Ken Cheeseman at ext. 3560.

The campaign will culminate with the Annual Terry Fox Family Fun Run, which will be held on Sunday, 23 September, at the Terry Fox Halle on the Selfkant Kaserne in Niederheid. If you have any questions about this year’s Terry Fox Campaign, feel free to contact the Committee Chairman, Capt. Ken Cheeseman at ext. 3560.

The world is closer than ever to fi nding cures for cancer, and with your continued participation and support, we will succeed. This year, make it a point to come out and participate. Nationality does not matter. Everyone understands the cause. All proceeds go to German Cancer Society (Deutsche Krebshilfe). So... bring your family and friends, a will to succeed like Terry’s, and remember, Terry ran 42 kilometres every day for cancer research. His single dream has brought a world of hope?

‘Forbidden to make photos’, says a warning sign at the main gate of the E-3A Component. It’s surely not the only place on earth where it isn’t allowed, even when there are no warning signs. Something that Mr. Jos Lafl eur, Logistics Wing Bench Stock, noticed at the Rwanda and Congo border. Instead of being investigated by the International Military Police he received handcuffs from the Rwanda border police. Together with his wife Miranda he recently spent two weeks in Africa. I met Miranda in the Frisbee Club. With passion and motivation she talks about the humanitarian help needed for Africa.

    Here is her story:

“We wanted to cross the border to pick up supplies from two containers in Congo that we sent earlier from Europe. Jos made a photo from an old bridge above the river that divides the two countries. Probably that wasn’t allowed. Fortunately, he was only kept in a secure unit for a couple of hours. As time became short we couldn’t manage to reach the containers. Perhaps that was our luck too, because later we heard that tens of people, of all origins, were killed that day in that region.

“The fi rst time that we travelled to Africa was two years ago when we went to the province of Bwindi, in Uganda. The poverty that we saw was so enormous that I decided to help. I collected all kind of items, mostly for a school in the southeast of the

country. Then I found sponsors who donated all kind of goods needed by the young students in Bwindi. I also received donations via an article in the NATO Skywatch; donations such as books, school materials and clothes. The hardest thing is to get the donated items shipped. Besides being very expensive, it’s also an impossible task to do by yourself. I’m so grateful for all the support and help that I received the last year.

“I approached several authorities and organizations for help to transport the goods. In the end I received a positive response from ‘Wir für Ruanda’ (We for Rwanda - WfR). I was able to use space in one of their containers to send the four pallets of goods to Africa. One thing that I learned in the last year is that you can’t do it without support from an organization.

“That’s why I joined WfR, which was established in 1994 by Dr. Bernd

Bierbaum. WfR has supported projects such as the Nurses of the Institution St. Bonifatius, who worked in the refugee camps near Goma to provide all kinds of humanitarian goods. Later, other WfR projects were organized to help the people get their faith back and become active again, e.g. to renovate and install schools and hospitals by themselves. Also WfR supported small projects for women and widows and shipped aid goods and medicine. But the organization has also completed big projects, like the complete renovation of the Mweso hospital, Uganda.

“My husband and I are WfR volunteers now. Earlier this year we spent two weeks in Rwanda. Every volunteer does that on his own expense. I helped in a hospital for handicapped children and Jos helped out in the local area by making house repairs, such as door locks and electricity and everything in between.

“The newest project of WfR is Amizero Y’Ubuzima (Hope for Life). Near the city of Butare WfR bought a big piece of land. In the next coming years a new centre for physical and mental handicapped children will be established. Previous experience has shown that those kind of children usually get placed in areas without any medical care. The intention of WfR is to provide treatment for those children as well as care for their well being. Besides the manufacturing of the needed buildings a main focus will also be the training of local nurses. Also, when needed, people will receive training in Germany. With the planning and establishing of the project, everything will be done in cohesion with the country’s environmental harmony.

“Of course, this project costs quite an amount of money. Also, with urgency, we need towels and bedclothes. That’s why every year we organize events to inform the public about Africa and WfR.

“On Friday, 3 August (from 1930 to 2300) and Saturday, 4 August (from

1000 to 2300) and Sunday, 5 August (from 1000 to 1800) we have our ‘Congo Days’. Beside lectures from scientists and experts also music, dance, games and children attractions will fi ll the day. Of course food and drinks will be available also. This all will be offered in Heinsberg-Oberbruch at Haupt- und Realschule Park 19.

“I still have contact with the school in Bwindi. The goods that I sent to them have to be brought from the containers in Congo by hand luggage. That takes quite some time. For the moment the situation there is too dangerous to visit Bwindi. But in future when it’s possible, I’ll visit them because my heart is with them.”

Editor’s note: If you want to support Miranda Lafl eur/We for Rwanda with aid help for Africa you can contact her on 02456 501068 or email jos.lafl [email protected]

    By Heidi Soerensen

In this issue of NATO Skywatch, we will continue to look back at the Component’s history by publishing another original article from the past.

This particular front-page is from the 25 March, 1994 issue and displays a letter of appreciation sent from Gen. George A. Joulwan, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) to, at that time, the Component Commander Brig. Gen. Friedrich-W. Ehmann. The letter highlights one particular mission that was fl own on the morning of 28 February 1994, which was described as a challenging and yet very successful mission.

With this story, we hope to provide some historical knowledge of the most comprehensive operation in the Component’s past: the operations in the former Yugoslavia. After the political decision was made and the E-3A Component were called upon, the fi rst mission supporting the United Nations peacekeeping efforts in the former Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) took place on 16 July 1992. At that time nobody could have envisioned the Component’s degree or length of involvement in that confl ict.

Nineteen months later on Monday, 28 February 1994, the E-3A on station reported an unidentifi ed contact in the United Nations No-Fly zone over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The E-3A ordered two NATO Deny Flight fi ghters to make a visual identifi cation and the fi ghters reported back: six Serbian Galebs. In accordance with standing procedures, warnings were issued to the violators to land or exit the UN No-Fly zone immediately. The Galebs did not respond and the NATO fi ghter watched the Galebs as they did bombing manoeuvres followed by explosions on the ground. The NATO fi ghters vectored by the E-3A on station were cleared to fi re their missiles, four out of the six Galebs were engaged and the two remaining exited the UN No-Fly Zone.

”Violations of the No-Fly Zone like we saw today will simply not be tolerated…..”, said Admiral Mike Boorda, Commander In Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe (CINSOUTH) during a press conference in Naples, Italy on 28 February 1994.

The Component’s involvement continued for 12 years until the last mission was fl own in December 2004. During that period the E-3A orchestrated hundreds of combat aircraft in and out of the war zone, directed pilots to dozens of air to air refuelling tankers and monitored enemy radar by conducting around the clock fl ying with constant deployments. The crewmembers had a continuously heavy workload with missions that lasted anywhere from 12 to 15 hours. They often had to take over missions from other E-3As unable to fl y for various reasons, which suddenly put them in charge of a mission they were not previously prepared for.

This required the crews to take control of the situation and quickly build up their situational awareness while the fi ghters and strikers were checking in on their frequency just before entering enemy territory. Despite these diffi cult and demanding circumstances, Component crewmembers met the challenge head on and did an outstanding job by all accounts.

Captain Holger Kinzlin has been a weapons controller for more than 21 years and has a total of 1256 missions behind him, including 505 from the confl ict in the FRY. Looking back he says, “The years of fl ying for the confl ict in FRY were very busy for us and our families, but the effort and spirit of all crews were extremely high.”

If you browse through the old articles about the operations in FRY you will fi nd one thing in common; lots of praise and appreciative statements about the professionalism and high standard of performance displayed by the Component.

“Without AWACS, the NATO deployment would not have been possible. As a commander, I was very proud of how we performed and fulfi lled our task,” said Component Commander Brig. Gen. Klaus-Peter Stieglitz in August 1999.

Over the next coming weeks, we will continue to publish a series of original articles, and we hope you will look forward to looking back at the Component’s past.
