JANUARY MEETING

happy New Year Everyone!

I hope the holidays were good to all of you. We will be starting off the month early this

time. As most of you know Peggy and James Chaney have put together a drive to east

Texas to the Shed for lunch on Saturday the 7th, listed under events on Facebook. We

will be leaving from Mazda Mesquite at 10:30. Should be having lunch and our January

meeting around 1:30 at the Shed, and then drive back, arriving home by dinner. If the

weather holds, it should be a beautiful and hopefully, a top down day. What a Miata way

to start the new year.

IMPORTANT! Mesquite Mazda has requested a car count for Saturday so they will

have enough room for us to park and leave out from, so if you could email me your

confirmation on or before Thursday of this week, January 5th

, I really would appreciate it.

I really hope you can make it. That goes for the Corvettes, too!

Also, it is time to renew your membership. If you picked up a form at the November

meeting, please fill it out and bring it with you or send to me at the address on the form.

There is a form in this month’s newsletter and I will have forms with me at the meeting.

Last, and by no means least, on behalf of the entire club, our sincere thanks to Anthony

Burokas who has constructed and managed our Blogsite, Facebook page and put in loads

of work in support of club activities and getting the word out to everyone in a timely

manner. Our “website” is no longer dead. It has been resurrected in a new and different

form by Anthony. You will find it fresh, current, user-friendly and chock full of

interesting and useful information. Again, thank you, Anthony!

2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition, an

AutoWeek Drivers Log Car Review

ART DIRECTOR CHERYL L. BLAHNIK: This 2011 Mazda MX-5 is the first convertible I've been in this summer, and

the weather was perfect. So I jumped in, undid the latch and pushed the button to stow the power hardtop and I was off in this

fancy Miata with a price to match. Seeing a Miata cost more than $30,000 does make you pause, but to be fair, there is a lot

here, including the hardtop, leather seats and seat warmers.

Visually, the hardtop gives the Miata a buttoned-up look, but I was a little surprised that it didn't muffle out the wind noise

better. It's still quite loud in the cabin with the top up. It doesn't really matter, though, because this car is meant to be driven

with the top down.

The car feels nimble, and the combination of the six-speed manual transmission and high-revving, 2.0-liter four-cylinder

make this car flat-out fun. There's decent jump off the line, and the quick steering response made this car perfect for dodging

Michigan potholes and maneuvering through traffic.

Overall, this is a fun little car with nice features. However, the price does seem steep, and it's a far cry from the classic Miata

concept of being fun and affordable.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR--AUTOWEEK.COM BOB GRITZINGER: I would love to own one of these little roadsters

someday--the car is pure enthusiast fun to drive--quick enough, agile in the extreme, stylish without being a snobbish,

reasonably accommodating, and mechanically perfect. It's the kind of car that I'd be happy running through the gears and

through the same series of curves all day long, without ever tiring of the exercise.

Everything falls perfectly into place for my five-foot-10-inch frame--clutch, steering wheel, shifter at exactly the locations

needed to actuate each as needed without any extra reach needed and without feeling in any way encumbered. This is a little

thing, but I appreciate the door-panel bottle/cupholders as a secure place to put your onboard liquids without compromising

the forearm/elbow room aft of the shifter.

Did I mention that I never put the top down? I spent my overnight in the car during the height of one of Michigan's latest

deluges, so I was glad to have the retractable hardtop solidly in place. This was especially true when easing my way through

side-street flooding when big trucks and tall SUVs couldn't be bothered with my careful pace and blew by in the deeper

water, creating waves big enough to swamp a rowboat. The MX-5 survived.

Though purists might opt for a soft-top MX-5, I can see the value of the convertible hardtop in safety and security, quieter

roof-up driving and better roof-up exterior appearance. I'm sure it adds weight and raises the center of gravity a bit, and adds

to the cost, but unless you plan to autocross your MX-5, those downsides are negligible.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: For the past couple of years, I've found myself getting out of every MX-5

that I drive saying that the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky didn't stand a chance. Sure, those General Motors products had the

standout looks, but it couldn't hold a candle to the refined drive quality of the Mazda. At least, that's in my opinion.

Everything on this car is so well tuned from the steering response and feedback, suspension, clutch-pedal take up and slick-

shifting manual gearbox. It's hard not to drive the MX-5 hard because the car seemingly demands you to. Wringing out all

167 hp from the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and the enhanced induction sound of the engine is apparent and enjoyable to hear from

behind the wheel.

This particular tester is equipped with the power-retractable hardtop, which is a good piece. Operation is quick and does add

some additional insulation from sound and the elements for added practicality. It does add 82 pounds over the soft top, but

the car still behaves like a Miata should even with that weight up high.

Page 11: Volume 23, Issue 1 Facebook ...remodeling or building a home. I’ve seen some beautiful vintage hardwood flooring at salvage yards, but just wasn’t up to the refinishing job. Here’s

11

Simply put, driving a Miata is a pleasure--top-down on a sunny afternoon cruise or terrorizing a local autocross course.

Throughout the years, Mazda hasn't diluted the formula for the Miata too much. Sure, there were some concessions to get a

little bigger, but all things considered, it's still a lightweight. I hope a more powerful Mazdaspeed version gets here soon.

NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: With the weather finally warming up in Michigan, I was thrilled to get this 2011

Mazda MX-5 for a night, and I logged considerable miles on it. The hardtop looks sharp, purists be damned, and pulling the

switch and pushing a button is a snap. This black paint job sort of toughens this Mazda mite up a bit, and it is plenty

attractive to my eyes.

The six-speed is always a joy, running through the years and being rewarded with an interactive, energetic experience that

Mazda and few others deliver. The interior is well-laid out; it's a small car so everything is within reach. I'm about five-foot-

nine, so this roadster fits me well.

The steering has a solid feel to it, and the chassis is rock-solid. With just 2,600 pounds on its bones, the Miata, even in

hardtop form, is still lithe and lean. The acceleration is strong, giving this car plenty of gusto.

Convertibles are simple pleasures, and this car offers a pure experience in that respect for enthusiasts.

ART DIRECTOR TARA KLEIN: I had the pleasure of driving this 2011 Mazda MX-5 on one of Michigan's nicest

weekends this year. This compact convertible offers everything a driver needs--style, convenience and ample fun.

The sparkling black metallic paint glittered in the sunlight, giving this particular Miata more dimension. The simplicity of the

exterior design allows you to focus on the sleek curvature of the basic forms, creating a classic look that should stand the test

of time. While the controls and overall composition were a tad on the plain side for me, the interior was easy to navigate and

featured bright white seats that resulted in a bolder look.

Operating the hardtop was a cinch. Basically one button and a few seconds was all it took to transform the Miata, and this led

me to a more relaxing experience when under the few grey clouds that formed on Saturday afternoon.

Time spent driving this car made up some of the most fun I had throughout my weekend. Shifting through the gears was a

pure delight, and the impeccable response of this car is impressive, to say the least. The ride quality, handling and overall

experience that I had in this Miata find themselves ranked among my most gratifying, and I feel I won't be alone in that

sentiment.

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: I'll never turn down a blast in a Miata, even an overequipped, too-expensive one. It's still a joy to

drive, still affordable. It's refreshing to jump in one every once in a while.

It's not a rocket, no. But it's quick, which is different than fast. It scoots from light to light with the best of 'em, and the

gearbox is a pleasure--short and precise throws. The superb balance, the connection among driver, steering and road is among

the best in the business with immediate reaction to inputs. It's easy to see why so many of these are raced. Could it be one of

the world's best-handling cars? I believe that's the case.

Prices start at $23,110 for the soft-top. That's where my shopping would begin. Hard to believe it's more than 20 years old

now.

EDITORIAL INTERN BRAD CONSTANT: Here's some important background information about my physical stature.

I'm a lean and mean six-feet-one-inch tall and 185 pounds (on a good day). I'm not a big man, but I'm not small by any

means.

This is my only issue with the 2011 Mazda MX-5: It's not made for taller folk such as me. I felt as if I was crammed into the

Miata. I put the seat all the way back and adjusted the seatback so I had room to work the pedals. But this put my head far

higher than I prefer.

But the fact that taller people have a beef with the Miata isn't anything new. The Miata is meant to be small and has been so

since it debuted at the Chicago auto show in 1989. It was designed to be a small, lightweight roadster meant for those who

loved minimal mechanical complexity and longed for a fun little car.

Page 12: Volume 23, Issue 1 Facebook ...remodeling or building a home. I’ve seen some beautiful vintage hardwood flooring at salvage yards, but just wasn’t up to the refinishing job. Here’s

12

The Miata fits this mold perfectly. As Wes said, the balance and the connection between the driver and the road are

outstanding. It responds perfectly and predictably to every driver input, which is exactly what I want in a little sports car. The

brake pedal is neither too firm nor too soft, the throttle and clutch feel great, the steering is quick and the shifter throws are

fast.

Needless to say, I enjoyed my brief stint behind the wheel of the Miata. The braking was excellent, the body roll was minimal

and the handling was superb. On countless occasions I would downshift during braking for a corner, turn in, hit my apex as I

hustled the Miata through the turn and get back on the throttle without worry. The car remained composed the whole way

through.

I was also fortunate enough to drive the Miata with the top down. This took away the large blind spots, which I found very

annoying, created by the hardtop. I also received a wonderful head massage because of my stature and seat position.

Fortunately, I was prepared with my summer buzz cut, so the wind that whipped through my hair didn't stand a chance at

giving me a bad hair day.

But regardless of my fit, the Miata is an exceptional car. I just wish Mazda could make one that was a little bit bigger.

If an item doesn’t apply or you don’t want to provide the information, put ‘N/A’. Please do not leave any of the spaces blank. Dues are $30.00 per year. The amount varies according to when you join. If you join after January, the dues are prorated; please contact me for the correct amount. If you want name badges, be sure that the name on the form is the name you want on the badge! If you would like to see them before you buy, when you come to a club meeting, several members have them and will be glad to show them to you.
