Wow, what a way to end our driving events! As our ven- ues come to an end this year, the Blue Jean Show was a great success. With 20 entries competing in five classes there was something for everyone. A big thank you to Toni Schmidt, our judges, and all the volunteers who made this event so special, thank you so much. With fires and floods many of our members have had a terrible year, our thoughts go out to all that have suffered so much. As this year nears its end please join the planning committee to focus on next year’s outings. Our club needs your help to continue offering fun events for all to enjoy. We need your support! Blue Jeans Pleasure Show Report—by Toni Schmidt

We had another good, successful show this year. The weather was crisp in the morning, but turned nice and

warm by afternoon. Everybody looked like they were enjoying themselves and no one got hurt. There was an

actual crowd of people watching this year, too. I know most were friends and family, but still it was good to

see. We ran a little longer than I expected, but not too much. We even made a little money for the club and I

got rid of all the extra t-shirts I had from previous shows. The only real glitch I made was giving the keys to

the trailer back to Pat Lamprey and letting her leave before I unlocked the club trailer hitch lock. Luckily, Lani

Piper had a spare set and drove back out to rescue me.

My husband and I were out on Thursday measuring and marking the Pace course and I was back midday on

Friday setting up the office and starting to put up signage on the Pace before a couple of other people

showed up to set up the cones course. It was cold and drizzly in the afternoon, but it never actually rained

and it got done and measured in a reasonable time. We did have to contend with a big muddy spot just in-

side the white arena, but we just had everyone walk around it, shortened the arena with some cones and

made do.

We had a good, hardworking cadre of volunteers again this year. There were several people who just showed

up and started helping and their help was greatly appreciated. Most of my volunteers were family, friends

and friends of friends. There were a couple of club volunteers, but having a few more next year would help.

My friend Susan set up lunch this year again (after missing last year). We used the pavilion in the Polo Field

instead of setting up the tent. That worked well, but she missed seeing the horses in the ring classes. She

had to settle for watching the Cones classes and the Pace went around her.

This year we had five VSE, three large ponies, and eleven single horse entries. Three of our horse entries

were ground driving young horses getting them used to being around other horses and seeing something

different. Good for them! We had one mule this year and she came from Nebraska to play!

We offered five classes again this year. That seems to be a good number. Lauralie Taubenheim was our

judge, Jack Bloss was the Ring Steward, and Glen McGirr kept everyone coming in and out of the gate

properly. Working Pleasure and Reinsmanship are the two ring classes and work both the drivers and the

horses. There were nine horses in the horse division so they were broken up in the Working Pleasure class

just in case there were any horses not used to being in the ring with a lot of other horses. They performed

well enough that Lauralie had them all back in for Reinsmanship. She gave everyone a good long workout in

each class and then explained what went right and what went wrong to the competitors (not something you

will see at other shows).

There were two cones classes this year. For the first cones class I appropriated the cones course that was

used at the Vineyards Classic CDE in May. I removed four sets of cones and replaced them with an “L” obsta-

cle since obstacles in cones classes are not seen often and they are fun to drive. This was a fairly tough

course since it was originally intended to test advanced level CDE drivers. There were no double clear drives

and only a couple of people who drove with no time faults. The Fault and Out class was a subset

of the main cones course. That might have worked better if I could have set up both courses, but we only

have so many cones. We will see what I plan for next year. I try to change out classes so people can see what

different ADS classes are like in case they go to another show and those classes are offered.

I traded out the log skid class this year for a Pleasure Pace that took drivers around the Polo Field, around

the pond and back around the Polo Field. This class ran throughout the day so competitors could take their

turn when they had time. That seemed to work out pretty well so we will probably try it again next year. There

may be some additional twists to it since I pared it down to be as easy as the rules allowed. I will need more

volunteers to make it more complicated since they will have to be out on the course.

I did not run out of ribbons this year, but did offer to “buy” ribbons back with horse treats and had some tak-

ers with that. I completely understand people wanting to keep those first ribbons, but I found that they be-

come less important after you fill a box or two with them. I don’t mind offering an alternative to those that

enjoy the game more than the ribbon. Everybody wins this way.

That was the show this year. This is a good show for beginners to try and for more experienced

drivers to test themselves. We aim for casual, fun, and informative and are getting better each year .
