The Lion’s Roar Volume 17, Number 11 Cincinnatus Central School District Newsletter December 2016 Second Graders Honor Veterans On Thursday, November 10 th , second grade students felt honored to be in the presence of two local veterans. Linda DeLapp and Crispian DeLarm came to visit and share their experiences of serving in the US Military. Linda DeLapp, who is a teacher’s aide here at Cincinnatus, served in the US Army during the years of 1982-1988. Linda showed her dress greens and told the students that girls had a skirt or slacks that they had to wear. She spoke of her training, which included learning about weapons and how to shoot them, and the many jobs she was required to do while she was in Basic Training at Ft. Dix. Her jobs included kitchen duty, emptying garbage pails, cleaning the barracks and to be ready for inspection every morning and cleaning her weapon to be put away and locked in the Armory each night. She shared a funny story where one time when she was on KP duty, she was emptying a garbage pail and her hat fell off into the garbage. She was required to wear her hat at all times so she had to scoop it out of the garbage wipe it off onto her uniform and put it on her head. The students roared with laughter. After basic training she went on to her training to work in the offices and do required paperwork there. Linda also shared her graduation picture, a picture of her platoon, and in the yearbook she brought along we were able to see pictures of the training spots she was located at. She told the students that in order to serve in the military it was a requirement to have a High School diploma, so that they should study hard and do their best in school. She also shared that in the Army you had to listen to all of the directions and to help one another. Crispian DeLarm, who now works in the Cincy store as a meat cutter, served in the US Navy during the years of 1993-1997. Crispian came dressed in his dress blues and shared with the students that his hat was called a “Dixie cup” or a cover. His job was that of a hospital corpsman, similar to what we think of as an EMT. He served on the USS Mount Baker, which was an ammunition supply ship. Once the ship was “underway”, (out of the harbor and into the water), you should expect to be gone for 3-4 weeks at a time. Unlike Mrs. DeLapp’s training where she learned to use weapons, his training included learning how to live on a ship. He learned to pack small, folding clothes a certain way to take up the least amount of space possible. They did lots of exercises, marching, and “drilling” practice for ceremonies. His training also included learning how to run the ship in the event he might have to. Crispian shared with us some pictures of his ship as well as a helicopter coming in to pick up supplies off from their ship to put onto another ship that was close by. One of the important points made by both Mrs. DeLapp and Mr. DeLarm was that it was important to always be a team member and to help others in need. TEAMWORK is very important. A special THANK YOU to both of these Veterans and to the many residing in our town that have served and currently are serving our country to protect us and the freedoms we enjoy today. Second Graders Honor VeteransOn Thursday, November 10th, second grade students felt honored to be in the presence of

two local veterans.

Cincinnatus School Needs Your Help! Our school’s Strategic Planning Action Team will be offering an important opportunity for your voice (anonymous of course) to be heard as to what you think our school does well and what our school needs to improve upon.

As a part of our Strategic Plan, we again will be offering an anonymous survey to our students in grades 6-12 (Student Scan), all residents (Community Scan) and all employees (District Scan). The results will be analyzed to assist us with our best efforts to continue to improve our school. The first time the survey/scans was offered was during the 2010-2011 school year and we are eager to see what you think now and to gather your input.

More information about the volunteer and anonymous surveys will be provided through the December Lion’s Roar. However, please note the following:

• Student Scan: December 12 – 16, 2016• District Scan: December 12 – 21, 2016• Community Scan: December 12 – 30, 2016

We want to make the completion of the survey as easy as possible. Therefore, the survey will be available, as noted above, to residents via a student backpack item, in our local businesses, at the school’s visitor center, and online.

Cincinnatus High School is welcoming a new special education teacher, Mr. Dan Bradish. Mr. Bradish has previously worked at Upstate Cerebral Palsy, in Rome, and also at South Lewis Central School, in Turin. He attended college at SUNY Oswego where he received his Bachelor’s degree, and then attended SUNY Potsdam where he furthered his education and received his Master’s Degree. Mr. Bradish says he chose to be a special education teacher, because he feels as if everyone deserves to be educated, and a teacher has the opportunity to impact someone’s life and he wants to be a part of that. Mr. Bradish chose to work at Cincinnatus because it has such a kind atmosphere and the beautiful scenery surrounding the school. In Mr. Bradish’s free time, he enjoys playing sports such as golf and basketball. He also enjoys attending Syracuse football games, and playing guitar. One unique fact about Mr. Bradish is that he is from Lewis County where there are more cows than people.

Cincinnatus High School welcomes Ms. Jolene Eaton to the Social Studies department. Ms. Eaton currently teaches global history, geography, economics and psychology. Ms. Eaton attended college ta SUNY Cortland where she earned her Bachelor's in History and Adolescent Social Studies education, as well as her Master's degree in Literacy. Ms. Eaton chose to become a teacher because she believes teaching is a very rewarding position and she likes having the opportunity to inspire students and make a difference in their lives. She chose to work at Cincinnatus, because this is Ms. Eaton’s home community and she takes pride in what the school offers. She wants to give back to the students in the community with what Cincinnatus provided her throughout her years here. Ms. Eaton enjoys playing soccer on the weekends and spending time with her family. One unique fact about her is that while she was attending college, she worked as a lab analyst analyzing water samples.

Recently, Mrs. Haskins Kindergarten class teamed up with Mrs. Warner’s Social Media class to learn about coding. The high school students studied how to use a set of robots to do different actions and then taught the Kindergartners how to use them. The students had to be able to use an iPad to control the robots actions and make them go forward, backward, spin around, dance, make noises, and change speed. The Kindergartners were surprised to learn that there are lots of different kinds of robots and they all had a lot of fun! They all said that they liked having the high school students teach them and that they would all make good teachers one day. Mrs. Warner’s class is planning on visiting other elementary classrooms to teach them about coding as well. Submitted by: Mrs. Haskins

This year’s Middle School Student Council Zap-a-Snack sale was a huge success thanks to the overwhelming support of the Cincinnatus community. This year we had two students selling over $500.00. Alyssa Sherrod sold $559.50 and won a $50.00 Walmart gift card. Abigail Whaley sold $533.00 and won a $30.00 Walmart gift card. Eric Peterson was the third place winner of a $20.00 Walmart gift card selling $475.00. Any student selling five or more items went into a drawing for the five pound Hershey Chocolate bar. For each five items sold, the student’s name was entered again. Shannon Ryan won the drawing for the Hershey bar. Many thanks to the students for putting forth an excellent effort and to everyone that supported our school! Submitted by: Mrs. Roelen

From the SOCIAL STUDIES CORNER…..The Fourth grade classes have been studying about the early Native Americans, also known as the Iroquois, or the Haudenosaunee, meaning the People of the Longhouse. As part of the New York State core curriculum, Social Studies content is encompassed in the ELA modules set forth by New York State. Fourth grade Social Studies curriculum is based on New York State history. The students are working together to research the nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, consisting of the original five nations: Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawk. Students are learning about the Iroquois way of life, men and women’s roles, cultural beliefs. The students also had the opportunity to take part in the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse production of “There Once Was a Longhouse,” by Rick Balian. Students are doing close reading in different trade books, researching material from the internet, watching documentaries and taking notes. As part of the Iroquois unit, students will be working together to research the Iroquois festivals, a time when the Iroquois gave thanks to the great spirits for all that they had given them. CCYLCortland County Youth Leadership is a program in which student members can develop leadership skills, serve the community, and explore some activities and events in the county. This year students had to apply to the CCYL program. From the pool of applications, the scholarship committee chose 6 students based on the following criteria: student must be a positive person, show good leadership qualities, possess a good academic record, and be in eleventh grade. This year’s representatives are Tyler Beckwith, Logan Carolan, Heather Hartley, Ashly Johnson, and Hanna Spencer. Some activities planned for the year are a tour of the hospital, a field trip to a Nursing Home Facility where members will assist senior citizens, and a trip to Lime Hollow where members from all participating schools will help clean up the environmental center. Overall, this year holds a lot of activities and events for the members to enjoy as well as learn from.Submitted by Mrs. Carey

Senior Scholarships & College VisitsScholarships and college visits are posted on the Guidance Bulletin Board and are updated continuously throughout the year. They are also posted on the Cincinnatus Guidance Facebook page. Mrs. Carey also sends a monthly email to seniors listing scholarships, links, and deadlines. ASVABThis year Cincinnatus High School is offering Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors the opportunity to take the Armed Services Voca-tional Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) on Friday, December 9th at 8:30 a.m. What is the ASVAB? It is a multi-aptitude test battery that helps identify different skills and competencies. It consists of eight short individual tests covering General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop informa-tion, and Mechanical Comprehension. Not only do students receive scores on each of these individual tests, they also receive the results combined to yield three career exploration scores: Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills. The ASVAB test results provide a snapshot of current knowledge and skills. These scores can be compared with the educational or job require-ments for occupations of interest to students. The ASVAB is required for entry in the Armed Services. There is no cost to take the ASVAB. This year all Sophomores will take the ASVAB as part of our career planning and later we will complete the interpretation of each student’s results. Please contact the Guidance Office if you would like more information.

Cincinnatus Central School District: A community striving to meet all students’ needs, awaken their minds and touch their hearts.

Cincinnatus Central School DistrictBoard of Education

Margaret Peri: President Jessica Latta: Vice President

Peter Bush Richard DodgeNathan Metzler Charles Winters

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
