Fair Trophies and Awards

Awards have played a vital part in the histo-

ry and development of the 4-H program.

"The philosophy of the 4-H program has

always included the use of contests, prizes,

and awards in stimulating special effort and

superior achievement on the part of 4-H

members", according to Longfellow.

We sincerely appreciate all individuals and

businesses who sponsor fair trophies and

awards. Your support is awesome and ap-

preciated!

Some people donate to a specific area, some people donate to 4-H in general, giving so that all 4-H’ers can

feel the pride and joy in being awarded for their superior accomplishments.

Specific trophies still available: Medals for Shooting Sports, Champion and Reserve for Shopping in Style

Modeling, Sr., Dog, Intermediate, Jr., and PSA Speech awards, money towards cash prizes for static ex-

hibits and cash prizes for livestock judging.

If you would like to donate, please contact the 4-H Office at 402-267-2205.

A sincere and hearty “Thank you” goes out to Mr. Mike

Cook, owner and operator of Mtc Landscapes, LLC in

Murdock, NE. Mr. Cook graciously donated and

helped set up new rabbit cages in the small animal barn

on the fairgrounds.

THANK YOU Mr. Cook

for supporting the 4-H

program. We appreciate

your generosity!

2016 Special Garden Project

Jazzy Mix Zinnias

This year’s Special Garden

Project is the bicolor bloom

jazzy mix zinnias. They are

very unique. This cultivar

come in shades of burgundy-

red, red, yellow, and orange

with cream, red or yellow tips.

The 1-2” blooms are fully-

double and semi-double. These zinnias are a great cut

flower that can get 20-26” tall! On average it will

take about 78-85 days for the plants to bloom.

For all 4-H’ers who ordered the Jazzy Mix Zinnia

seeds last February, check the newsletter that came

with your seeds. It give great tips about planting, car-

ing for your zinnias, and getting them ready for ex-

hibit.

Good luck growing your flowers. We are excited to

see these zinnias exhibited at the 4-H fair! They are b-

e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l flowers!

Quality Assurance

The 4-H Quality Assurance (QA) for livestock

producers means making a promise to the consum-

ers, or the people who consume the meat,

eggs, milk, and dairy products from food produc-

tion animals.

The promise made is that products from livestock

will be the highest possible quality and producers

will do everything possible to make these products

safe to eat.

Quality Assurance is a self-directed course de-

signed for youth ages 8-18. The course has been

divided into three levels, Junior (4-H age 8-10),

Intermediate (4-H ages 11-14) , and Senior (4-H

ages 15-18).

For the online modules you need to pass with at

least an 80%; for the test-outs it remains at 70%.

Once you have passed a module quiz with a score

of 80% or higher, you will be able to open the cer-

tificate associated with that module. Print this cer-

tificate and present it to the Extension Office BE-

FORE June 15 of the year for which you would

like to receive credit.

4-H’ers (ages 12-18) also have the options to take a

written test. There are tests for youth 12-14, and 15

and older. If you pass the 12-14 test you won’t

have to take the training again until you are 15. If

you pass the 15 and older test you do not have to

ever take the training again!

Practice tests are provided to help you prepare for

the test that you may take in the Extension Office.

Save the Date…..If 4-H’ers would like to attend

a class, Ashley Benes will be teaching a QA class

on Monday, May 23rd beginning at 5:00 p.m.

If you need to come, and can’t make it on the

24th, Otoe County is offering the same class on

Tuesday, May 24th and Cass County 4-H’ers

are welcome to come!

State Fair ~ Blow and Go

An important message from Brandy

Wagner, 4-H Youth Development at

the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,

Education Engagement Coordinator

and FLL Affiliate Partner UNL:

“This year the State Fair 4-H and FFA beef shows

will be no-fit. While we certainly respect the tal-

ent and passion many have for the fitting process, a

decision of Blow and Go Grooming was made

based on feedback from staff and families, as well

as the success of the blow and go showmanship

contest at the 2015 Nebraska State Fair. With this

decision it was noted that there will be:

A reduction in the cost of supplies and prod-

ucts.

The need for fewer blocking chutes needed and

help expedite the unloading process.”

If you have any questions, please contact Ashley

Benes at the Extension Office 402-267-2205.

Community Service in Cass County

Cass County is a service-at-heart county and Cass County 4-Hers have been making and donating to the community for

many years. Cass County 4-H’ers use their heads, hearts, and hands while thinking about the health of others. Through

4-H service projects and donations, club members learn the importance of service, compassion, and generosity.

Anytime is the time to work on items that can be donated, BUT did you know the item(s) 4-H’ers make can be entered as

county fair exhibits first and then they’re delivered to Cass County Emergency Services or given to recipient of 4-Hers’

choice. Projects to choose from that can be exhibited at the fair include:

fabric (cotton, cotton/polyester blends), quilt panels, thread, and batting are appreciated. Volunteers are needed to long

arm quilt or machine quilt, bind or tie the quilts. Such items can be dropped off any time at the Cass County Extension

Office.

auction, 4-Hers must exhibit

one other project at the fair.
