The Agronomy Angle—Improving your soil structure

Before you start ripping up areas of your paddocks think about this: your land is your most

valuable asset, it provides you with your livelihood. It makes sense to do some research

into the sub surface soil zones to determine what is causing the productivity issues and

formulate a strategy to best rectify those constraints.

Things to consider prior to delving or ripping and spading on your farm.

Changing soil structure through mechanically ripping / delving and spading along with soil

ameliorates (gypsum/lime) has been growing in momentum over the past few seasons.

The use of soil mapping (Radiometrics and EM) and yield maps combined with the growers and

agronomists knowledge are identifying paddocks or areas within paddocks with soil structural

issues limiting yield.

There have been plenty of success stories and this method is transforming some country. There

have also been mistakes made, generally due to a lack of prior research. Some of the soil

structure or chemical restraints that can create issues if not identified before ripping, delving or

spading are:

Low pH layers—these generally contain

high levels of free aluminium which is toxic

to plant roots and limits growth; this can be

rectified easily with an application of lime.

Sodic Clay—Sodic clays are dispersive,

have poor structure and limit water

infiltration, an application of gypsum is

required if this is an issue.

Clay with high pH and free lime—This can

cause issues with a crop like lupins in areas

where they were previously successfully

grown. This cannot be rectified so an

alternative crop will need to be planted.

High Levels of Gravel in Profile—In some

cases there can be layers with over 80%

gravel. In these cases you may want to bring

greater amounts of clay up through the

profile to help increase water and nutrient

holding capacity.

Trace Elements—Although these generally

are not an issue, it is a great opportunity to

incorporate these highly immobile elements

through the profile.

The Falcon 5000 has superior sample

consistency and accuracy, and can

accommodate high daily sampling volumes.

It will have a real advantage over traditional

soil testing in harder setting soils or in soils

which are hard to test.

The machine uses GPS tracking, accurate

sample logging and a barcode system to

eliminate human error, and it can be adapted

to suit yield zones, soil zones or other testing

parameters.

This machine can evenly take core samples

every 4.5m with a core depth from 10cm up to

20cm.

This will not only give Cummins Ag the ability

to help growers build a more accurate

picture of how nutrient levels vary between

zones. The ability to take large volumes of

samples per day will allow for samples to be

collected in a more timely fashion, thus make

better decisions about crop nutrition needs.

Controlling loose smut in barley Loose smut control in barley is necessary to protect grain yield as affected plants do not

produce grain. Every tiller of infected plants produces a smutted head instead of grain, so if

5% of tillers are affected, a yield penalty of up to 5% can occur. There are also some countries

that have a zero tolerance to loose smut contaminated grain.

Hindmarsh, Latrobe and Spartacus barley are more susceptible to loose smut and therefore

need the more effective seed treatments to combat the seed borne disease.

Loose smut in barley is internally seed borne so if you are seeing infected heads then it means

your grain source was contaminated. Due to the life cycle of loose smut, a fungicidal seed

treatment that penetrates the seed at

germination is required to control the

disease. Most smut diseases can be

controlled by a seed treatment that

sterilises the surface of the seed but this is

not the case for loose smut as the fungus is

within the seed.

Correct application of seed dressings that

control loose smut are critical in controlling

loose smut. Every seed needs to be

adequately treated. Loose smut is a

numbers game so even 99% control can still

lead to a few infected plants per hectare.

Alpha evo 5100—high performance in all conditions

A sprayer is only as good as its boom.

It’s easy to forget what the end goal is. Accurate chemical application.

Boom control can be the difference between a good spray result, and a patchy job that the

chemical gets blamed. Hardi understands this and it is why all our sprayer designs are

centred around the boom first and foremost.

The ALPHA evo with 24-44m TR5 aluminium boom delivers excellent flotation and sets a new standard in capacity spraying. A new generation hydrostatic four-wheel drive

transmission provides best power to weight ratio and performance.

HARDI fluid system from tank to nozzle delivers precision application to the target every time.

Unmatched boom performance from TWIN air booms to 30m and aluminium TR5 to 44m.

Newer varieties

There are a number of newly released seed

varieties for next season. Here is a summary

of most of them.

We are accepting orders now. If you have an

indication of what you want, the sooner you

can let us know, the better.

Havoc (AH) wheat is a rapid maturing line

with a short canopy height. Septoria MSS

(Scepter S), Powdery Mildew MS (Scepter

SVS).

Sheriff CL Plus (APW) wheat with similar

maturity to Trojan. Compact height, Stable

yield in high and low production years,

reduced rust resistance, YLS MRMS

Vixen (AH) wheat Quick vigorous, compact

height, similar Septoria & Powdery Mildew to

Scepter, similar grain to Scepter, slightly

higher screenings, slightly lower TW.

Banks barley is a mid-late maturing potential

malting variety (due March 2019). NFNB R-

MRMS, SFNB MS. It has been tested in NVTs

since 2015 and yielded 105-107% of the trial

average in each of those seasons.

RGT Planet barley is a direct introduction

from Europe due for final malt accreditation in

March 2019. NFNB MRMS-SVS, SFNB S. Planet

has shown the highest yield potential of any

variety but quality data suggests it has a

lower test weight than Commander and has a

greater tendency for increased grain

screenings in less favourable finishes.

PBA Bendoc faba beans are a Clearfield

variety created from a Nura cross with

Samira, maturity similar to Samira, smaller

seed, Ascochyta MR (similar), Chocolate Spot

MS, hopefully will have a permit for Intervix.

PBA Marne faba beans Early flowering

variety, suited to low rainfall or short season

environments, has produced its highest yields

relative to other varieties where yields have

been less than 3t. Ascochyta R, Rust MR

Bateman lupins are a new high yielding

lupin variety (11% better than Mandelup

2012-2016). Metribuzin tolerance similar to

Jurien, Barlock & Gunyidi. It also has similar

maturity to Jurien & Mandelup.

Butler field peas are a new ‘Kaspa type’ field

pea with high yields and improved resistance

to bacterial blight over Kaspa. Mid to late

flowering and early to mid maturing.

PBA Hallmark XT lentils are a medium red

lentil with a 5-12% long-term yield advantage

over PBA Hurricane XT. Botrytis Grey Mould

R/MR, Ascochyta MR.

Trials completed for 2018:

Wangary canola varieties, blackleg fungicides, sclerotinia

treatments, nitrogen management
