Happy New Year! I am very thank-ful for the support the Superior Scholarship Foundation received during the past year. Many “Supe-

rior” students reaped the benefits of our generous community members. Besides providing 249 post-secondary education scholarships in 2015, the Superior Scholarship Foundation was able to finan-cially supplement numerous classroom field trips and extra-curricular events. Outings varying from creating art with professionals at the Duluth Art Institute, to being immersed in a presentation about living in outer space at the Science Museum of Minnesota, to being an audience member viewing William Shakespeare’s, The Tempest enhanced classroom instruction. Numer-ous club members were also awarded monetary assistance making their dream of academic team participation a reality.

is

for 2016 and Beyond

These new scholarships were created during the past year, and all of them are endowed so that they are funded into the future. The class of 2016 will be the first recepients. We want to thank all of those who have generously contributed these resources.

Alistair Jay “AJ” Conley Memorial Scholarship

The Alistair Jay “AJ” Conley Memorial Scholarship was created in loving memory of one very special five-year-old boy after he passed away unexpectedly in his sleep the night of Halloween 2015.

His family, parents Allison and Jay Conley, together with his siblings, Bennett, Miles, Xavier and Violet, and grand-mother Monica Tikkanen, wanted something positive to come out of AJ’s passing. The idea of establishing a Memorial Scholarship in his memory was very appealing to them. Born the third of five children, AJ had a con-tagious smile that could light up the sky. As a middle child, he knew exactly how to get your attention and he charmed people with his sense of humor. Some of the most precious memories that the family holds dear are his big and hearty belly laughs or his warmth when he gave them a hug.

As a kindergarten student at Four Corners Elementary, AJ was eager to learn. He had an excitement about

life and wasn’t afraid of new experiences. Whenever he had a homework assignment he would work on it the minute he arrived home even if it wasn’t due for several days. While his older brothers invited him to play video games he was driven and focused to finish his home-work immediately and would then tuck it away in his folder with a sense of pride. He would giggle to himself and chide his

older brothers that he was done with his homework for the week. His sense of time management and determination were special qualities of his, even for such a young age.

AJ was always friendly and helpful, a friend to all who knew him. He had such love and compassion for both babies and elderly alike, and shared a strong bond with his grandparents. His goal in life was to become a doctor.

In addition to this scholarship the family is planning to

oer a second scholarship to a student who attended Four Corners Elementary and then graduates the year of one of AJ’s siblings or the year AJ would have gradu-ated.

The Jeery L. Lewis Scholarship

This scholarship is being given by Jeery Lewis, who graduated from Superior High School. Je received a scholarship from SHS upon graduation and now is gen-erously giving back to his alma mater. He said he had recently paid o his student loans and now wants to help others. Je works out of the area with Blue Cross/Blue Shield

YOU!

The generosity is continuing in 2016. Several new endowed scholarships are being oered to the Class of 2016 graduates. These schol-arships include: The Alistair Jay “A.J.” Conley Memorial Scholarship, the Bob and Jill Gross Scholarship, the Jerey Lewis Scholarship, and the Matthew Pionk Memorial Scholar-ship. With the scholarship application pro-cess underway, the Superior High School Scholarship Committee has begun the dif-ficult task of selecting the 2016 scholarship recipients. This time consuming process is comprehensive and objective. Committee members dedicate considerable amounts of time reviewing every applicant’s qualifica-tions. Thank you to committee members for their outstanding work.

Celebrating graduation and promoting giving back will be a goal of the Scholarship Fund Raising Sub-Committee. For the first time, the “Spartan Connections” will be e-mailed to all 2016 graduates’ Google accounts. Non-school e-mail addresses will be requested to facilitate on-going communication with graduates. Electronic communication will improve interaction with SHS graduates no matter where their post-secondary dreams take them.

Over the years alumni have initiated schol-arships in honor of their graduating classes. Currently, scholarships funded by the Supe-rior Central Class of 1962 and the Supe-rior Central Class of 1964 are available to graduates. Central High School Alumni and Superior East High School All Class Reunion Scholarships are also oered. Most recently the Superior High School Class of 1993 decided to launch a scholarship campaign. It was decided that the monies left over from their 10 and 20 year class reunions would be donated to the Superior Scholarship Founda-tion. The classmates had such a good time planning their reunions that they wanted to continue meeting and planning. Conse-quently, they have enthusiastically hosted several fund raising events including golf and kick ball tournaments with more excit-ing events to follow. Matt Miller, a dedicated classmate on the planning committee think-

ing “outside the box,” established an account through the Razoo Foundation in which the Class of 1993 Scholarship Fund receives a monthly donation directly from his personal account. The eorts of the Class of 1993 are truly appreciated.

Donations from SHS alumni, community members, and friends make post-second-ary scholarships and student enrichment programs possible. If you are interested in supporting students in the School District of Superior by making a tax-deductible dona-tion:

• Send your tax-deductible contribution to the School District of Superior Scholar-ship Foundation, 3025 Tower Avenue, Superior, WI 54880.

The Bob and Jill Gross Scholarship

The Bob and Jill Gross Scholarship is intended for students attending WITC or the University of WI-Supe-rior. Bob grew up in Milwaukee, attended UWS and was in AFROTC there. Bob’s early tie to Superior was being a nephew of Tony Yaworski. Tony was an art teacher at Superior High School and has a scholarship given in his memory each year. After moving to Scottsdale, AZ, Bob met his future wife, Jill. Jill was a teacher and Bob worked for US West/Qwest there. Bob’s love of Superior is why they chose SHS to have this scholarship. They both retired a few years ago but unfortunately Jill lost her battle with cancer in January. Bob remains in Scottsdale.

Sally L. Jewson Scholarship UpdateIn 2013 Sally L. Jewson established a scholar-ship in her honor of her family. Her father Frank, mother Margaret, and brother Bart had prede-ceased Sally. She had no heirs. She had lived in California, Iowa, Minnesota and other parts of Wisconsin, but when Sally was needed at home when her elderly parents needed her, she returned to Superior where she taught for 20 years. Her students at Central Junior High will remember her as the fun teacher; the one who dressed in costumes for holidays; the one who decorated her entire classroom; the one who really cared for her students. One of her first students from California wrote to Sally very often for 56 years, including the week that Sally passed away. She passed away at St. Luke’s Hospice Unit on December 29, 2015 at the age of 83.

As part of her estate planning, Sally planned to increase the Jewson Family Scholarship upon her death. Because of her sizable bequest, the scholarship will be increased from $500 to $1000 per year for two students this June. The Jewson Family Scholarship will support future scholarships perpetually. To sup-port the community and the school district that helped Sally create her assets, Sally was committed to giving back. She also donated to three local agencies who provide services to boys and girls, the arts, and the museum.

SFC Matthew I. Pionk Scholarship

Matt grew up in Oliver and attended Bryant Elementary, Central Junior High, and graduated from Superior Senior High in 1996. He was involved in youth basketball and baseball programs in Superior while he was in school. During his years at Superior High School he was very involved in the Auto Tech program and loved to work on cars and trucks. He restored a 1970 Chevy truck to mint condition with the help of his mentor, Jim Bianchi.

Matt enlisted in the Army in 1998 and did his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia where he graduated with Infantry and Airborne training. His first deployment to Iraq was with the 24th Regiment/25th Infantry Division to Mosul in 2004. Matt received the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal with Valor for saving his Platoon Sergeant after he had been seriously injured. He deployed to Iraq again in August 2007 to the Diyala Province and was the Platoon Sergeant for the Recon Platoon. On January 9, 2008 Matt and five of his fellow soldiers and their Iraqi interpreter were killed in Sinsil when a house rigged with heavy explosives blew while they were searching it. Matt was married and had three young chil-dren when he was killed.

Matt was a friend to all and was always there to help anyone who needed it. His parents want this scholarship to enable someone who has the same love in automotives as Matt did, to further their education after they graduate from Superior High School.

To support the community and the school district that helped Sally create her assets,

Sally was commied to giving back.
