Wishing you all a Happy Spring!! I had a great time continuing my visits around to the Chapters. On January 12 th I visited Donnie Hull and the Cape Cod Chapter in Hyannis at Double Tree by Hilton. It was an educational meeting on Personal & Commercial Umbrella’' by Arlene Room. It as a well-attended meeting with great questions from the members. Donnie consistently holds an efficient meeting for the members. On January 13 th I went to Plymouth, Ernies’s Restaurant and visited Monique Duquette and the Plymouth Chapter. A very informative speaker Dr. Jennifer Eames of Marion Family Chiropractic on Chiropractic Care for Overall Health. Members donated children’s winter items for The Home for Little Wanderers in Plymouth. Enjoyed seeing an activity book by member for month by month look at each member. Monique has done an excellent job of engaging all members during this meeting at the end each member had provided a report! Chapter goals this year are education, community evolvement and growing membership and the Chapter should be very proud of their success! On February 10 th I took a trip to Danvers to visit Co-Director’s Andrea McInnis and Estelle Jeter and the Essex Chapter. Recently Director, Sue Emanuelson decided to step down from her role. Essex Chapter did an amazing job of regrouping and forming Co-Director’s while not only maintaining membership but also grew the membership! It was a joint meeting with Middlesex Chapter / Phyllis Riordan and members of the Middlesex Chapter along with lots of enthusiasm. The evening speaker was Raven from American Red Cross who provided an overview of all the wonderful things American Red Cross does in our communities. I liked the fact the committee reports were available for members at the front desk as they walked into the meeting. On March 8 th I went to Canton and visited Adrianne Grover and the Norfolk Chapter. The evening topic was communications/ Public Speaker Seminar by Beatrice Grant. A wonderful program that I would like to see offered to the other Chapters. Members are working hard on the May meeting and have lots planned for our weekend. It was an efficiently run meeting and members did a great job with committee reports. President Elect’s Report

It has been a productive and busy year. At our February Associationmeeting I presented that we change up our Board Meeting byeliminating reading the Chair committee reports and implement a roundtable at the close of the board meeting to brain storm new ideas to makeMAIW the best it can be.

We should be seeing this change at our May Association Meeting.

On March 19, 2016 Carol Closson our President, Arlene Room SouthMiddlesex Director, Heather Heffernan Bristol Chapter Treasure and I meetwith Shannon Donovan and Amy Sullivan with the Tattoo Agency atMartha’s Vineyard to give them the tools required to form Dukes Chapter.

This meeting was informative and we all engaged in great conversation.We then ended the day at Sharky’s for great Mexican food.

I connected with Angela Smith with the Worcester Chapter to discuss itsfuture. Angela is going to discuss with Worcester members what is goingto work best for them. Whether they decide to continue with theWorcester Chapter or perhaps join the Middlesex Chapter.I offered ideas and discussed the interest that we received at the BigEvent from a few people that would like to join the Worcester Chapter.

On April1.2016 I am happy to announce that I will be attending the SouthMiddlesex Fashion Show. I look forward to meeting our members of SouthMiddlesex.

Realty finally is setting in and I cannot believe that May Associationmeeting is fast approaching and I will be installed as President for the termof 2016-2017.

There are many things I wish to accomplish in the coming year and I knowthat working together with MAIW members we can continue to do greatthings.

I hope to see many of our members attend the May Association meeting.

Vice President’s Report

Hello Everyone!

Let’s talk MAIW:

MAIW was founded in 1938! 78 years ago!

Here are some interesting facts of what was happening in 1938:

Federal minimum wage law guarantees workers 40 cents per hour First use of seeing eye dog 1st passenger ship equipped with radar U.S. forbids child labor in factories Orson Welles panics a nation with broadcast of “War of the

Worlds” Dr. R N Harger’s “drunkometer”, 1st breath test, introduced in

Indiana Margaret Hamilton’s costume (a.k.a Wicked Witch) catches

fire in filming “Wizard of Oz” Protective baseball helmets 1st worn by batters Yankees sweep Red Sox 10-0 and 5-4 in front of 83,533 at

Yankee Stadium Despite losing a double header, Yankees clinch pennant #10 1st black woman legislator, Crystal Bird Fauset of Philadelphia The Great New England Hurricane of 9/21/1938 with 183 mph

winds, killing 700 people

I wonder what the founders of MAIW were thinking for the future ofMAIW when they founded it in 1938. Did they even imagine the year2016? Suffolk, Middlesex and Norfolk Chapters were among the firstchapters formed with Greta Wray Burns as one of the first Presidents.

Do you ever imagine what MAIW will be like in 2094? 78 years fromnow?

I imagine that our success and our continued success comes down tothe basics of TEAMWORK, MENTORING and INSPIRING one another. Anorganization cannot thrive and grow successfully without teamwork.

I believe that those basics are what MAIW was founded on and that iswhat we need to continue to get us through the next 78 years andthrough our TEAMWORK, all I can say is, “We Got This”!

Bristol Chapter

Greetings from the Bristol Chapter!

We’ve been hard at work since my last report.

The Bristol chapter started 2016 reaching a major goal and milestone. Ourpublicity chair, Liliana Melo announced at our January meeting that ourchapter had reached 100 likes on Facebook by January 1st! Our Januarymeeting also included our annual pound and yard auction. Proceed fromthe event go towards our scholarship fund. I have to admit, our membersget more creative every year selecting their pound or yard gifts. This year,the notable auction item was a 1lb live lobster! Everyone after that seemeda little hesitant to stick their hand in a gift bag before looking. Our Poundand Yard Auction was a great success raising $692 this year. At the end ofJanuary, we tried our hand at a combination paint night/membership drivewhich Cathy from Paul Davis was kind enough to host for us. Attendancefrom members was low, most likely due to the fact that the event was heldin North Attleboro vs. Westport. So far, I haven’t seen any new members joinas a result but I think the few members who did attend had a lot of fun. Ican personally admit I won’t be quitting my day job to become an artistany time soon.

In February, we enjoyed a 2 CEU class present by Cathy DiPilato on Fire andSmoke damage.

In March, DeCotis Insurance spoke with us about Excess and Surplus linesInsurance. Elections for our officers were held and we are happy to reportthat Felicia Amaral and Sara Watkins will be Co-Director, Janet Ponte waselected as Assistant Director, Heather Heffernan will be our Treasurer, andDenise DeLeo and Megan Macbey will be Co-Secretaries. In addition, amotion was presented and approved to increase the number ofscholarships we award from two to three this fiscal year. We look forward toour May meeting where we will have the pleasure of awarding thesescholarships to three deserving graduating high school seniors.

The Bristol Chapter is welcoming spring with open arms as we continue tosupport our community and educate our members.

Essex ChapterAfter the hectic holiday season, the Essex Chapter members reallyenjoyed the laid back night of fun at our January meeting, ahibachi night at Mikado’s Restaurant, (see pictures below). TheFebruary meeting was a joint meeting with the Middlesex Chapter.It was great to join our two chapters for the evening. We werealso very happy to have our MAIW President, Carol Closson, inattendance. Her enthusiasm as she spoke to the group was veryuplifting.

Come March, we learned about home inspections from JohnWard of Homestead Report. At the March meeting we also heldour elections for 2016 – 2017. Cyndi Mezoff was elected as ournext Director. For the Assistant Director, Becca Mezoff waselected. Estelle Jeter was elected as the new Secretary. Finally,Ingrid Brown was elected as our Treasurer for another year. Baker Celebrates Enactment of Opioid Law

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with legislative and community leaders, health care providers, regulators, and former addicts, Gov. Charlie Baker (R) signed landmark legislation into law that imposes some of the strictest standards in the country for prescribing opioids. At the packed bill signing, Baker said, “Today, the Commonwealth stands in solidarity to fight the opioid and heroin epidemic that continues to plague our state and burden count-less families and individuals.” Baker credited legislators of both parties with putting partisan politics aside to work for the well-being of Massachusetts residents and their communities. It is estimated that four deaths occur each day in the Commonwealth because of drug overdoses.

Enactment of the bill caps off an effort that Baker cited as a priority during his first day in office. The new law includes many provisions that attempt to reach from the doctor’s office to the classroom in exerting greater controls over the prescribing of opioids and raising awareness of addiction issues. Among the provisions are ones to:

• Limit first-time prescriptions of opioids to a seven-day supply;

• Allow prescription refills for only a portion of the original prescription;

• Require health care providers to check the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) database before prescribing certain narcotics to individ-uals;
