His Six Pièces (1868), described by Lizst as the most important pieces for or- gan since Bach, included the first symphonic organ work and set the bar for later composers such as Widor, Guilmant and Vierne. His Trois Pièces (1878) brought vigour and grandeur to a nation recovering from the Franco-Prussian defeat. With the Trois Chorals he created peerless masterpieces that are among the most popular works ever written for the organ. Fugue State Films recently released a documentary entitled "Cesar Franck - Father of the Organ Symphony." At the center of this boxed-set are three films that explore his life and work. In Franck: Life of an Organist, Eric Lebrun, biographer of Franck, traces the most important events of his life and shows how his organ music fits into his overall canon. In An Introduction to Franck s Twelve Great Organ Works, David Noël- Hudson offers a textual analysis of all twelve pieces, including a groundbreaking thesis showing how the Trois Chorals can be seen as a single, cyclic work with three movements. In Franck and Performance Practice on the Organ, Joris Ver- din demonstrates how to play Francks music in a historically informed manner. All twelve works are presented over the CDs and DVDs, in stunning recordings on key organs built by Franck's great patron, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, including the magnificent instrument in the cathedral of Saint-Omer. In addition, various bonus tracks include movements from L'organiste, Franck's valedictory work for the harmonium. In sum, these films and recordings provide the content and con- text of Franck's greatest organ music. We will sample highlights from the films during our February meeting on Saturday, February 6, 10:00 A.M. at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 25 West Springettsbury Ave, York, PA 17403.

    DEAN’ S LETTER

The York Chapter, AGO has lost one of its honorary members, Esther Hamme. Esther L. (Deitz) Hamme, 95, passed away Wednesday, Janu-ary 13, 2016. She was born December 19, 1920, to the late Howard and Cora Deitz. She was a 1938 graduate of West York High School. Esther was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, M. Duane Hamme. She is survived by her two sons, Duane Eugene Hamme and his wife, Robin of Hendersonville, NC, and Gary Lee Hamme and his wife, Eileen of Ormond Beach, FL; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Esther was a member of the Guild for many years and served as news-letter editor and archivist for many years. Esther studied organ with J. Frank Frysinger, the first Dean of the York Chapter as well as with Adam Hamme formerly organist at Zion Lutheran Church. Esther was devoted to her career as a musician both as an organist and a piano teacher.

I have fond memories of Esther as she had the gift of gab. Esther could talk and talk and never grow

tired of learning something new from you. If you have stories about Esther, I invite you to share them

with the chapter members. Joan Beekey, Carolyn Smith, Sub-Dean and myself attended Esther’s fu-

neral on the 19th of January. I happened to have visited Esther at the Lutheran Village at Kelly Drive

one day last fall. She was still active ringing handbells. We had a good conversation going down

memory lane. Esther will be missed by those whom she knew and cared for.. -Victor Fields

Buch Organs will be sponsoring an Organ Dedication Concert at St. Theresa Parish of New Cumberland featuring a dynamite young artist, Gregory Zelek. The concert will be Sunday, February 21 at 4:00 pm. St. Theresa Catholic Parish, 1300 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA.

    Greg Zelek

Praised for his “effortless facility on the instrument” (South Florida Clas-sical Review), Greg Zelek is increasingly recognized as one of the most exciting young organists in the American organ scene. In addition to concertizing throughout the United States, he has performed with orchestras as both a soloist and professional ensemble member. In 2011, Greg performed Poulenc’s Organ Concerto with the Miami Symphony Orchestra, and in 2012 played Strauss’s Al-pine Symphony with the MET Orchestra in Carnegie Hall conducted by Semyon Bychkov. He was the organist in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Faust, and performed twice with the New World Symphony in 2014, including a performance of Lukas Foss’s Phori-on, under Michael Tilson Thomas, that was videoed and recorded for later screening. Greg was recently fea-tured as a guest soloist with the Ridgewood Symphony in New Jersey.

Greg has performed in many different venues throughout the US, including a performance of Co-chereau’s Bolero for Organ and Percussion in Alice Tully Hall, which was broadcast on American Public Me-dia’s radio program Pipedreams. He also closed the WQXR Bach Marathon at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, which was streamed live on New York City’s only classical music station. A proponent of new music for the organ, Greg has premiered and performed works by fellow Juilliard composers and faculty, including Wayne Oquin’s Reverie and Samuel Adler’s Partita for Organ in concerts throughout the country.

A native of Miami, Florida, Greg is a graduate student of Paul Jacobs at the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. Greg is a proud recipient of the Kovner Fellowship at the Juilliard School, having been one of nineteen selected for the inaugural fellowship that covers full cost of attendance. He was the First Prize winner in both the 2012 Rodgers North American Classical Organ Competition and the 2012 West Chester University Organ Competition, and was selected as a 2010 NFAA YoungArts Silver Medal Win-ner. He won First Prize, as well as the “Bach Prize,” at the East Carolina University Organ Competition, and was a prizewinner in the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival.

Greg is the Music Director and Organist at the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy in New York City. Prior to this appointment, he served as Organ Scholar at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale, New York. Greg, who is a Cuban-American and a native Spanish speaker, was the Music Director of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Miami, and has served as the summer organist for San Pedro Apostol Church in Ramales de la Victoria, Spain.

Greetings from Harrisburg Chapter, AGO Harrisburg is hosting the only POE+ in the nation at the beautiful campus of Messiah College, Grantham, PA from July 10 – 14. This is an important endeavor to help organists (or folks simply interested in beginning or-gan study) to refine their skills and inspire them to become well trained church organists. Our brochure with details about costs, housing, faculty, churches and organs is available at www.harrisburgago.org or www.agohq.org. Applications are exclusively online this year. Payment, howev-er, will be sent to our registrar (address on application).
