Hello UWF, This year we got off to a stormy start, but we survived and are very thankful that we were not more seriously impacted in the Palm Coast area. As many of you may have discovered, our website is down; it has been hacked and now has been disabled by the hosting company because of viruses and malware on the site. Page 2: VOLUME 12 2 of the University THE WAVE · 2018-11-30 · The book for October is Fates and Furies: A Novel, by Lauren Groff. The Gourmet Gals plan to visit Whitney Labs for a tour,

October promises to be a very productive and exciting month! On October 9th, the Bookminders will meet at the home of Louel Larkin. The book for October is Fates and Furies: A Novel, by Lauren Groff. The Gourmet Gals plan to visit Whitney Labs for a tour, followed by lunch at Captain’s BBQ sometime in December. This event was planned for October 5th but is being rescheduled. The Lunch Bunch will meet at Suzanne Gaguzis’ house on October 20th. Something good is always cooking with the lunch bunch. Hopefully, you will be able to participate in some or all of these activities. Our speakers for October will be John Birney, Jr and Nancy Walsh from the Flagler County affiliate of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. This nonprofit organization promotes early literacy by mailing free, age appropriate books monthly to children from birth to age five. As you may remember, UWF supported this organization last year with a gift of $1,500. Bringing in these speakers gives us an opportunity to learn more about the organization and its impact in Flagler County. Our first major fundraiser of the year, Day of Games, chaired by Karen Flaherty and Pat Rhodes is just around the corner on October 27. There are still tickets available, so gather your friends and call Louel Larkin to get your tickets! Also, we still need door prizes, auction items and food donations. Give Karen or Pat a call if you can help. We need your support to make this fundraising event a success! As always, I look forward to seeing you soon! Sincerely, Barbara C. Holley, Ed.D. John Birney Jr. and Nancy Walsh are spokespersons for the local Dolly Parton Imagination Library pro-gram. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library program is a non-profit organization that promotes early childhood literacy by giving free, age appropriate books to children from birth to five years old. In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee. She wanted to ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their family income. By the year 2000, she made the program available for replication to any community that was willing to support it locally. This effort has grown to an international level including all of the USA, Can-ada, United Kingdom and Australia. John Birney Jr. and Nancy Walsh are spokespersons for our local efforts in establishing and operating a Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Flagler County.

They also introduced two guests: Joan Girosa and Gail Hardison. There are currently 99 members in our group. If anyone has a change in their membership infor-mation, they should contact Donna. Fates and Furies is a dazzling examination of a marriage; it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by one of the best writers of her generation. Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years. At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart.
