From the Desk of the Executive Director . . . by Pam Ditri
I t is that time of the year again where many within Burcham Hills will celebrate the holidays.
Directly after Thanksgiving this year, as in past years, 13 trees will be displayed and deco-
rated by residents and staff. This year, Two Men And A Truck® volunteered to set up the trees,
which helped tremendously. It instantly transforms Burcham with a holiday feel.
A very special event is the annual Resident Association Employee Holiday Party on Friday, December 14,
from 2-3:00 pm in the Ada Whitehouse Room. This event is hosted by the residents of Burcham Hills, includ-
ing the Clusters, for our 400+ staff members. Each year, the staff look forward to
this event with great anticipation. There will be singing and a visit from Santa.
Since Burcham Hills has a “no tipping” policy, this one exception is allowed. The
Resident Association oversees a monetary collection, which is divided between
the staff according to their defined guidelines and gifted during this Holiday Party.
The Holiday Parties, hosted by Burcham, for the residents and their loved ones,
will be held in the Ada Whitehouse Room. The Resident Center Party will be
on Tuesday, December 18, from 6:30-8:00 pm. The Center for Health & Re-
habilitation Party will be held on Thursday, December 20, from 6:30-8:00 pm.
We hope that you will be able to attend as we celebrate the season.
The culture and the holiday traditions continue to make Burcham Hills a special
place to be, thank you all for being part of Burcham Hills.
Wishing you and your loved ones
a joyous holiday season and a
Healthy and Happy New Year.

Employee Spotlight ~ Sheila Manns
Sheila Manns is a Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA) and works in the Center for Health
& Rehabilitation (CHR) at Burcham Hills for the past five years. She was born in Decatur,
Illinois but grew up Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then moved to Lansing when she was 14 years old.
During her free time, she enjoys mixing up lotions and soaps, and has her own brand name, Shhhh by
She. Everyone knows when she is in the building from her scent in the hallway. She also does crafting such as seasonal
vases and decorations for parties and events. Sheila also enjoys inventing things and has created a product called Tear
Away, flushable linings. These are linings for diapers that you can tear out flush and throw away. The purpose is to elim-
inate the smells and its environmentally friendly. When she isn’t doing all this, she likes to go bowling.
Sheila has 10 kids ranging from 9-32 years old, 8 girls and 2 boys, which includes 2 sets of twins, one set are Irish twins
(siblings born in the same calendar year, or otherwise less than twelve months apart). She has one brother and spends a lot of
time with her grandkids and babysitting.
When asked what she enjoys about Burcham, Sheila states interacting with the residents and her co-workers. She appre-
ciates when staff approach her to ask questions and ask for advice when they need to talk, she has an invisible couch.
She also loves going on the outings with the residents- especially to Olive Garden. And Burcham Hills has a lot of smil-
ing faces. Sheila has noticed positive changes in the community during her five years of employment such as the renova-
tions to the employee break rooms.
Some of her future plans include going to back to Vegas for her birthday (she loved it, and feels it would be nice to live
there until she runs out of money ). She also would like to go to Jamaica next year. She is thinking about writing a bi-
ography and eventually making a movie.
Sheila says life is funny sometimes, that is why she jokes and stays positive all the time even on the bad days she likes to
make people smile. You can typically locate Sheila on the 2nd floor CHR. Stop by and say hello to her and maybe get
yourself some signature lotion.
Thank you for all you do Sheila and being a part of the Burcham Hills team.
Employee Spotlight ~ Nicole Cobb
Nicole Cobb has been with Burcham Hills for over two years, working 3rd shift as an LPN
on the 2nd floor of the CHR. A Lansing native, she enjoys do-it-yourself furniture makeovers.
“I like to fix things up that you would typically just throw away.”
She also likes to work out and runs virtual fitness challenge groups through Facebook. She’s been doing this for two
years, and says new people join every month, and prizes are awarded for participation.
Nicole and her husband have two boys. Their oldest son recently graduated from Haslett High School and is now attend-
ing Lansing Community College, looking to make a career working with computers. Their youngest son is 13 years old,
and attends Haslett Middle School. The family enjoys their dog, Wes, a 4-year-old American Terrier.
Recently, Nicole hiked for the first time in the mountains of Utah. Despite it getting colder and colder as they climbed
higher and higher, “it was a beautiful and wonderful experience!” The family enjoys travelling a few times a year and
plans to head to a warmer destination in the Spring, maybe Florida.
Nicole says she loves the atmosphere with the staff at Burcham Hills, and how well everyone gets along and works to-
gether as a team. She loves her co-workers, and they all try to be welcoming to new employees. She feels rewarded in
her work, “Just seeing the smiles on the residents faces and knowing you made a difference in their day.” She enjoys
making the residents feel right at home, and ensuring they get the care they need.
Eventually, Nicole would like to return to school for her RN degree. Until then, her focus is on family, fitness and her
job at Burcham Hills. We’re certainly glad to have her! Thank you, Nicole, for all you do!

Christmas is a Relaxing Fun Time by Bruce Greenman
C hristmas season begins shortly after the first of December. It is a wondrous time when
the miraculous becomes commonplace. It is a time when petty differences are cast aside
and goodwill reigns supreme. Everyone feels generous and hearts are infiltrated with the spir-
it of giving.
During this short season, we go around with a pleasant look on our face and greet total
strangers with a cheery smile. We become profuse in our thanks for small favors.
All of this is part of the buildup towards Christmas Day. Nostalgia also reigns supreme, as we recall the glories
and savored memories of Christmas’ past. Ah yes, those were the days, and we eternally anticipate more of the
same. But for some reason, the holidays themselves are not always that ideal. Probably they never were…time
tends to gloss over the problems and only the fond memories remain.
We imagine the storybook holiday, with the family gathered around the lighted tree on Christ-
mas Eve. There are beautifully wrapped packages, members of the family sip eggnog and
neighborhood carols waft across the crisp night air…naturally; it is a still evening with gently
falling snow.
Christmas morning is a happy time as the excited children take turns unwrapping gifts. In the
afternoon, everyone still feels great as they sit down to a sumptuous eight course dinner, prepared by Mother
(who, of course, is still fresh and pleasant).
Sound unfamiliar? Then you are probably among the majority who spend Christmas Eve running to the store for
a last minute gift, cleaning the house, screaming at the kids to get away from the presents and preparing food half
the night.
Those sparkling festivities and the relaxed, easy time are rarely realized in most families. Perhaps, it’s time we
make some drastic changes to transform an over-commercialized, frantic event into a warm satisfying celebra-
tion.
Why cling to traditions that have become drudgery? It isn’t necessary to imitate the stereotype family we see on
T.V. For example, if you detest mailing Christmas cards – forget it, who really cares about that once a year
greeting from otherwise long-forgotten friends?
A homemade Christmas dinner may be the tradition, but there’s no rule that says mother has to
wear herself to a frazzle getting it prepared. Many restaurants offer very fine holiday cuisine.
Every package doesn’t have to be beautifully wrapped and with a perfect bow. The house
doesn’t have to look immaculate, after all, who really even notices? Everything doesn’t have to
be so competitive. We don’t have to throw the most elaborate holiday cocktail party, give the
most expensive gifts or have the finest decorated tree. None of those are a true reflection of our
worth as a person.
Every year the cost of Christmas mushrooms. Somewhere along the line expenses must be cut. Often those ex-
pensive gifts are shortly forgotten, even though the bills remain. In the old days, homemade gifts were the tradi-
tion – and they came from the heart.
Provide the necessary time for your family and friends! Easy does it.
Aren’t those beautiful thoughts? ...sort of chokes you up with plans for a completely revised Christmas season.
You can do it, but will you? ...neither will I.
Footnote: This no longer really applies to us residents at Burcham. I wrote this in 1980 when it was, for most of
us, very true.

WELLNESS CLINIC Postponed until January 24
MONTHLY WELLNESS FOCUS: Health Services
A proactive approach to health and wellness is essential for disease prevention and detection, as well as residents’ peace
of mind and independence.
Inpatient Therapy. Inpatient Therapy is located in The Center for Health & Rehabilitation at Burcham
Hills on the 1st floor. We have 61 private suites. Currently, the rule is you must have a 3-day qualifying stay at
the hospital to be eligible for Medicare A benefits. The therapy disciplines include speech, occupational and
physical. Inpatient means you remain residing at Burcham Hills for your therapy services. A typical stay is an
average of 20-days. You are then discharged to your home with an individual plan of care, which may include
Outpatient Therapy. You must be 21 years or older to receive this service.
Outpatient Therapy. Outpatient Therapy is located on the 2nd floor of The Resident Center at Burcham
Hills, and is a separate licensed clinic, The Outpatient Therapy Clinic at Burcham Hills. External clients enter
in the separate external entrance vs. Burcham Hills residents may enter from the 2nd floor hallway. This benefit
is called Medicare B plus insurance plans. You must be 21 years or older to receive these outpatient therapy
services, have a physician’s order with a verification of insurance coverage. You may also pay privately for this
service. The therapy disciplines also include speech, occupational and physical. This is not an exercise program.
This is a therapeutic approach to a treatment plan which is continually evaluated for your progress and coverage
and requires a physician’s order.
Fitness. The Fitness Program located in the Wellness Center on the 2nd Floor of the Resident Center. Fitness
is an exercise program where clients work one-on-one with an Exercise Specialist to enhance their physical well
-being. The Fitness Program is a different entity than therapy. Unlike Therapy, clients in the Fitness Program do
not need a physician’s referral. Fitness Specialists work on maintaining or improving above a client’s physical
baseline while therapy works with clients who are below their physical baseline. If a client goes below their
baseline, the Fitness Specialist would refer the client to therapy. Fitness clients can stay on the program
continually whereas therapy discharges after the clients meet their goals. The Fitness Program can be done in
conjunction with therapy to assist with home exercise programs or post-discharge. This program is private pay
and not covered by insurance.

thored and funded by a generous gift from Carol Giacoletto, The Carol Giacoletto Education Award supports

Resident Association Employee Holiday Party Friday, December 14, 2-3:00 pm / AWR The Resident Association invites all residents, employees and their families to this
year’s Holiday Party. Each year, the Burcham Hills Resident Association sponsors a
holiday party to honor all employees and to present each with a monetary gift.
The Resident Association is currently taking contributions for the Resident Association Hol-
iday Fund. Contributions to the Fund can be made in the Business Office. If you have al-
ready contributed, it is most appreciated.
From Down the Hill . . . By Sylvia Rundquist, Clusters Board of Directors
As the weather cools, our sprinklers have been shut off, Ice Melt is at our front doors and
the leaves are falling rapidly from the trees. We had an early snowfall this year; however, for some rea-
son, we don’t seem to remember this is a yearly happening and it really isn’t the coldest Fall we’ve ever
had (as some residents believe).
Some condos have already been decorated for the season, and I’m sure others will soon follow. We will
launch the holiday season with our annual holiday dinner in the Ada Whitehouse Room early this month.
This is a lovely event which we enjoy each year.
We wish each and everyone a health and joyous holiday season.

Remember Stereographs? By Bruce Greenman
Remember as a kid at your grandparent’s house and wondering what to do? One of the
things I always turned to was the family stereograph collection.
Stereographs were an early form of three-dimensional photographs that came out in the
latter part of the nineteenth century. They displayed views of far-away lands and other
images not always available to the general population.
The stereograph was also known as the stereogram, stereopticon or stereo view. Placed on cardboard were
two almost identical photographs, side by side to be viewed with a stereoscope. The result was the 3-D effect
which was an awe-inspiring illusion for anyone during that time.
Burcham Hills has been fortunate to receive a very generous donation of a stereoscope and viewing cards
from Ethel Anthony, art appreciation volunteer. These will be place in the Resident Library for the enjoyment
of everyone in the near future.
