W ho ever said that 13 was an unlucky number? It certainly wasn’t at our 13th Annual Antiques Road Show on Sunday, April 27th! Alan Snyder, our very own certified antiques appraiser, once again hosted this fun and informative event.

Alan’s knowledge of antiques is absolutely amazing and his presentation is superb. He regaled us with some stories - I espe-cially like the one about the 50’s pink dish rack that a couple bought for their second home which they were decorating in a 1950’s theme. Another favorite was the one about buying items that he found in the garage and basement and not the china or crystal (which the woman didn’t allow anyone to use) – when the daughter arrived, she was so happy and told him that now

they didn’t have to worry about using the china and crystal anymore since Alan had bought all of the good stuff!

Once again, our members brought a wide variety of items to be ‘appraised’. There were two beautiful needlepoint chairs (one of which would go perfectly in my living room), painted trays from England, china sets from Germany, a sampler from a seven year old girl from Flagtown, paintings, a lovely windup mantle clock, a little sewing machine (just think – you could pack it in your suitcase when you traveled and never have to worry about splitting a seam or having the herm come undone – just take out your little sewing machine and repair it on the spot!), silver-plated pitchers, a little heater, and many other wonderful items as well. The members shared the stories of how they acquired the items which proved interesting – some of us were very pleased with what they are worth and other not so much. Alan explained how in different areas different items tend to be more popular and that the younger generation is not so interested in the china, silver, and old furniture as their parents and grand-

parents.

All those in attendance were treated to a delicious luncheon with plenty of food served family style – antipasto, chopped salad, mozzarella toasts, calamari, pasta, fish, veal, chicken, which was followed by vanilla ice cream and coffee. A few of us even made our very own ice cream sodas!! YUM! Once again Bella Italia did an amazing job – Thanks, Sal. Looking forward to our 14th Annual NNJS Antiques Road Show next year, so keep your eyes peeled for something special that you would like to bring

and share with the rest of us.

S pring is obviously having an identity crisis this year, as mother nature can’t quite make up her mind as to what temperature it is. None the less, your officers and

board members have been diligently braving the elements to put together our event of the year, June Jamboree 2014. Be sure to attend on Saturday 7 June 2014 at

MBUSA in Montvale for yet another outstanding event! Please see page one.

Volunteers are still needed to make this the outstanding event is always is, please

contact me if you would like to get involved!

Be on the lookout for upcoming events on our websites, Ken and I are working diligently to update it with the latest events and news. Anyone who has ideas about interesting and exciting things to do should reach out to me, I would

be more than happy to have you collaborate with us.

T he Mercedes Benz Regional Master Parts Distribution Center will be celebrating 10 years of Service with an Open House on Friday, July 18, 2014 from 11am to 3pm at their facility at 100 New Canton Way,

Robbinsville, NJ. Service and Parts Managers from the eastern seaboard from Maine to Virginia will attend. MBCA guests will have the opportunity to tour the facility along with the Service and Parts Managers, and learn just how the process works when you send your car in for service, and the intricacies of getting that part into your car and your Mercedes-Benz back on the road.

Catered lunch will be provided, and the day will end with a classic car show. Members are encouraged to bring your

vintage cars to show! Please let Matt Huda know if you will be attending.

F or the first time ever we will include the Silver Star Preservation Class at June Jamboree (JJ). Here is an over-view of the requirements. The full text and application form are available on the NNJS website. Click here

1. The stated purpose of the Silver Star Preservation Class is not to create yet another “judged class”. Each car is evaluated individually. There is no comparison of one car to another. 2. Car must be driven to the June Jamboree and have all its safety items operating. 3. The owner is to complete the shaded portion of “The Silver Star Preservation Class Qualification Form (available on the NNJ website) prior to arrival at JJ. 4. The point system has been designed as a guideline and qualification of 60 points or better in three of the five categories will earn you a Silver Star Preservation Certificate. Go to- http://sections.mbca.org/northern_new_jersey for complete instructions and application form. Application fee is the same as the rest of the classes -$50. ONLY TEN SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE. The first ten paid registrations will be included.

T he weather outside was frightful, but inside it was delightful. Ed Ebel, owner of Becker Autosound and our host, had set up a de-

lightful and delicious array of bagels, muffins, cake, and coffee which greeted us upon entering the second floor facility.

After some socializing, it was time to begin the Tech Session.

Tom was very informative and explained to us why the Germans had resisted putting cup holders in the cars – the items they contain - spill! Water and other liquids can then get into some very important parts of the car and cause a myriad of problems. They can fry the electronics-

not to mention making a mess and staining carpets and seats.

Tom told us some horror stories, using visual aides, of what happens when the drain holes get blocked and how the rain water will then drip on the electronics and render them useless. He showed us what the damage looks like and informed us that the parts need to be replaced

and cannot be repaired.

Once again, Ed Ebel and Tom did an outstanding job of informing and entertaining us with stories of what can happen when things go wrong. Thanks again for another wonderful Tech

Session at Becker Autosound.

L ife is a linear experience. We always start at one point and end up at another. The advent of the auto-

mobile has heightened our sense of directed movement. Modern existence is a perpetual journey from point A to point B. For me the advent of spring has come to signify a particularly pleasant transit from the starting line in Hopewell, New Jersey to the finish at Amelia Island, Florida. The famous Concours d’ Elegance is my lode-star. The three pointed celestial symbol at the bow of my Mercedes C230K is my southward pointing compass.

Choosing the right departure time and judiciously (not necessarily prudently) setting the cruise control I can make this linear passage down Route 95 in some thir-teen hours. At this particular time of year there is a magical quality to going from A to B when you are travel-ing precisely N to S. When I pull out of the lane at Fal-kenhorst there is frost on the windshield and snow in the shade. While on the green (literally) by the Ritz Carlton near the estuary of the Saint Mary River a beneficent tropical sun has banished the very existence of the dis-mal season.

Indeed the stars align for the Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance. Mercedes-Benz aficionados from all over the country converge for this kick off of the enthusiast auto-mobile season. In 2014 in particular the Mercedes-Benz Club America was a featured constellation at the cars and coffee gathering of enthusiasts on the Saturday be-fore the legendary show. My personal favorite starship on Saturday was an impeccably restored mid ‘60s 220SE Finback which was painted in the factory’s blue and white livery of the international rallye championship Mercedes from that bygone era. Objectively, the Fin-backs were the most sporting sedans of all time hailing from Sindelfingen. Subjectively, they were also the most aesthetically pleasing quarto portos ever to roll out the

door of the Swabian carrossiers. What a combination.

At the Concours itself, on Sunday, March 9th my favorite motorcar was a little bastard. No, I am not referring to the James Dean Porsche 550 Spyder of even appella-tion. The creature of which I speak was the illegitimate offspring of a stellar European parent and an American commoner, a panel beater. Quite the romantic liaison from a dime novel. The scion of this mechanical dalli-ance goes by the name, “Kircher Special.” It is a bar-chetta red, aluminum-bodied roadster with engine and

transmission from a Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Conceived during the mid ‘50s it must have been a screamer on SCCA tracks in its day. In any event, I was smitten. Not being convinced of the scientific merits of eugenics, I am prepared to accept that which snobs might dismiss as an aberration.

One learned theory which I am prepared to recognize is that of inverse gravity: that which goes down must surely go up. In keeping with this theorem, at the conclusion of the Amelia Island weekend with its shows, rallies and classic car auctions, I spun my star around and pro-ceeded from B to A, going S to N.

Back at the farm in New Jersey, after a gully washing rain put the minions of road salt to flight, I start my next stellar, linear journey. Out of the barn comes my very own 1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc. This thoroughbred Finback is not a bastard, but those who have driven be-hind in a rich cloud of Diesel smoke have been known to intone, “S.O.B.!”
