Facebook Mystery Contest

CATTLE are probably the oldest of all forms of money, dating back to 9000 BC. Some cattle were used as money in parts of Africa until the mid-20th century. Before paper, Americans traded animal skins, including deer and elk bucks, for goods and services. Hence the word “buck” to describe money.

Talk Of The TownRamblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Temple Of MammonBREAD and butter. Horse and carriage. Salt and pepper... to the list of things that seem to go together, add Cape May and Temple. It’s remarkable how many links the city has with the Philadelphia univer-sity. And when we say “links”, we mean the fairly constant stream of money that has been f lowing from 08204 to 19122 over the last few years. Maybe it’s a coincidence that Ed Mahaney, a Temple graduate, has been the mayor of Cape May while these deals have been agreed. Or maybe he wants a statue erected on the Temple grounds.

Mind you, Cape May’s recent history with the school predates Mayor Mahaney. In 2007, the year before the mayor took office, Temple graduate Martin Kimmel of Philadelphia architects Kimmel-Bogrette was hired to design Convention Hall with a no-bid contract, much to the chagrin of some locals, who wanted architects to compete for the job. (The same firm was responsible for the design of Temple’s prac-tice football field and student center, reno-vations of the law school, and a university fieldhouse and greenhouse.)

In 2009, with Mayor Mahaney in office, the university’s Department of Landscaping Architecture and Horticulture was paid $48,500 to come up with new designs for Rotary Park, Harborview Park and the Sewell Point Sanctuary, as well as a walking trail linking historical sites, and a conceptual plan for Lafayette Park. “Rather than seek out a professional firm, the project has been developed as a learn-ing experience for 27 students at Temple University Ambler. And while the students may not yet have their licenses, they are

approaching the project no less profession-ally,” says Temple’s website.

We’re thrilled that the students got to enjoy such a real-life “learning experi-ence”, but we are wondering why the city wouldn’t have employed the services of a licensed landscape architect firm to come up with the designs, which would pro-tect the city from liability just in case, you know, a gazebo fell apart and landed on someone’s head.

In 2005, the city engaged such a firm, Virginia-based Rhodeside and Harwell, who were paid $130,000 to come up with a “vision plan” that was aimed at beauti-fying the city’s open spaces. Their remit included Harborview and Rotary Park and their designs were viewed and discussed at public meetings. Makes you wonder why the city didn’t continue that relationship since the consensus was that Rhodeside and Harwell had produced excellent work.

Last month, Wells Appel, run by Stewart Appel, an adjunct professor at Temple, was hired, at a cost of $14,875, to do Convention Hall’s landscaping design work. Local contractors weren’t given the opportunity to bid. When we asked the mayor at a city council meeting why this was so, he touted the fact that the city had an already-established relationship with the firm, which was important since it was a rush job. We have a couple problems with this viewpoint. First of all, the city had an already-established relationship with Rhodeside and Harwell, and that didn’t seem to count for much. Secondly, when we spoke to Stewart Appel, he was at pains to point out that it was his company and NOT his students (who are the ones with the already-established relationship) which is

doing the design work at Convention Hall.Maybe, like us, you are having a hard

time distinguishing between the firm of Wells Appel and the students at Temple, and it seems like maybe the mayor is, too.

What also has our interest piqued is a $53,000 agreement between the city and Temple that was forged in 2009. The result was supposed to be two-fold: the devel-opment of a long-range plan “to ensure the improved viability of Cape May as a desired, premier tourist destination,” and the development of business and manage-ment plans for the new Convention Hall.

The public has never seen this busi-ness management plan, which should have been completed in March of 2011… the month the partnership ended, accord-ing to Temple’s website. A year later, and we’re still trying to figure out what the city got for its $53,000. “There was one PowerPoint presentation given by a Temple consultant a while back,” Harry Bellangy of the Taxpayers’ Association told us, “that looked like it was done in the back seat of someone’s car on the way to Cape May.”

We called and emailed the mayor and City Manager Bruce MacLeod for their responses to the points we bring up here. But neither of them has responded to any of our questions since the publication of last week’s column (and cartoon). Sorry, guys, but when you’re in public office, sulking is not an option.

So we reached out to Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman who, as usual, did call us back promptly. “To my knowledge,” he said, “that management plan has not been accomplished. It’s a great question

Continued On Page 14 ?

Page 14: Volume 10 Issue 10 Thursday April 12 2012

Page 14 Thursday, April 12, 2012

why not.” So, will we ever see the results? “I should hope we get what we pay for,” said Mr Wichterman. He mentioned that Mike Whipple, Director of Marketing, Communications, and Event Sales for Convention Hall (that’s a lot to squeeze on a business card), and his deputy Michael Chait are “two very accomplished guys,” that he’s requested of them a one-year and five-year management plan for Convention Hall, and that these are being presented to City Manager MacLeod “within a week or so.” That’s great, although we can’t under-stand why this work would have fallen on the shoulders of these men if Temple had already been paid for the work. “Temple predates me,” Mr Wichterman said. “I’m dealing with people I know. I know Whipple. I know Chait. I don’t have a clue what Temple is going to come up with.”

Hopefully, someone comes up with an operating cost projection sooner rather than later, considering the hall opens next month and, according to Mr Wichterman, this hasn’t been accomplished yet, either, “not to my knowledge.” We called Mike Whipple to check, and he said, “I wouldn’t say we have those figures yet, though we are doing things to reduce operating costs,

such as solar paneling.” As we reported after the last council

meeting, City Auditor Leon Costello has promised that citizens will not see a rise in taxes because of the building of Convention Hall (enough “old debts” are being retired that taxpayers will not feel the burden of a building debt), but it’s the operating costs that remain a mystery. “That’s something else Temple was supposed to come up with,” Harry Bellangy told us.

Perhaps part of the reason we don’t yet have an operating cost projection is that we don’t yet know all of the specifics of the hall. While council insists there are no major changes being made, we were told about a “discussion” last Wednesday between Mayor Mahaney and the city’s Construction Manager Bill Callahan. It involved “the need for space around the stage area for fire exits, which will dic-tate how big the stage needs to be,” Jack Wichterman told us, though he wouldn’t go into details.

You might think this is the kind of discussion that shouldn’t be happen-ing so close to the building’s opening, on Memorial Day weekend. But we were also disturbed that the “discussion” ended with the mayor appearing to threaten the con-struction manager’s job if the permit for the changes wasn’t produced quickly enough.

(“You could be working in Wildwood Crest on Monday!” was his parting shot, accord-ing to our sources.) It was nice of the mayor to provide such an immediate corrobora-tion of our column last week, which stated that, in defiance of municipal law, he, not the city manager, is running Cape May.

And so on to the final (that we know of ) partnership with Temple. The univer-sity has been organizing the Forum for the Future of Tourism — a series of public workshops, open forums and written ques-tionnaires, according to council meeting minutes from August, 2009. These com-ponents should have been completed a year ago, as per the original agreement, but the city was still collecting responses to tour-ism-related surveys a few weeks ago.

We asked M&M (Messrs Mahaney and MacLeod) if there had been a resolution in the last three years extending the part-nership — to which we heard... crickets. (We also filed government records request forms so we could see the details of the agreements with Temple. We’ll let you know as soon as we get the results.)

We did speak to Wes Roehl, Director of Graduate Programs in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple, who told us that one of the “quite useful” pieces

Talk Of The Town? From Page 14

of the city’s webpage is “a series of reports on what we’ve done.” We checked the city’s site, and one of those reports included this gem: “The main reasons for summer 2011 visitors to visit the City of Cape May were vacation and getaway.” Shut up! No way! And this: “The top three activities for non-local respondents were dining and the beach… and antiquing/shopping.” We demand another opinion — why is coyote-hunting not in the top three?!

Finally, we would like to share the story of an Exit Zero reader who called us Monday to tell us what happened when he went to City Hall to ask about tickets for the Peter Nero and the Philly Pops con-cert, which is allegedly opening the new Convention Hall. The last time we spoke to City Manager MacLeod, he refused to confirm that the concert was happening, or how much money the city was paying the group, even though every newspaper in the region had published a story saying the price was $85,000. “We’ll be holding a press conference,” was Mr MacLeod’s answer to our questions. Which is strange, since this is what the mayor said at a coun-

cil meeting last October, “Back in June, council gave the approval and I met with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops and we worked out an agreement for them to come down Memorial Day weekend and play a gala fundraiser benefit for the city.”

When our reader asked the lady behind the counter at City Hall for the cost of the tickets, she said she didn’t know yet. When he asked which night the concert was happening, she said she didn’t know that, either.

We are six weeks away from a con-cert that (allegedly) is costing the city $85,000. So, to help the effort, we are offering the city a free double-page spread ad in every issue of Exit Zero from now until the week before the event. That’s $1500 worth of advertising, in a paper that’s read by around 12,500 people every week, not to mention those who read it online, all over the tri-state area, and beyond. Mike Whipple — give us a call and we will do the rest. We’d hate to see taxpayers get shortchanged.

Very Important PeopleWE CAN’T tell you how badly we didn’t feel like going to VIP night at Carney’s last Thursday. Your reporter took a “quick”

power nap around 7pm, but woke up three hours later… groggy and in no mood to go out. But as the kids say, we rallied, and we were glad we did. VIP night is a harbinger of summer (you pay $10 this night, and you pay no cover for the rest of the season), which means a bar full of folks with sum-mer on the brain.

We headed straight for bartender Garret Welsh (“Garret with one T,” he told us. “My mom had nine months to get it right, and she still spelled it wrong.”) so that he could serve us our water. We are spending the month of April detox-ing, which is silly according to Garret with one T, because “April is the best month to drink.” Then he did his “bartending dance” with partner Becky Worcester. “We’re a team,” he said. “We’re going to come up with a handshake and everything.”

While we sipped our water, owner Joe Carney told us the turn-out on this partic-ular VIP night was actually “slightly less” than for years past, which was surprising. In the Main Room, because the dance f loor was so crowded, we saw people standing on tables in order to get a better glimpse of The Nerds, a band of middle-aged men

“from Nerdville” (aka north Jersey) who played everything from Adele to Guns N’ Roses, to Lady Gaga.

Lucky for us, being the press, we didn’t have to stand on tables, we simply followed the band upstairs to their dressing room during their break like groupies. Also like a groupie, you get to see them half-naked. No, kidding, we walked in on the Nerds as they peeled off their sweat-soaked shirts. “We’re sure it’s nothing you haven’t seen before at Chippendales,” they told us, to which we quickly changed the subject. “Why do you guys wear so much f lannel?” we asked of each member — Biff, Mongo, Stretch, and Spaz.

“This is NOT f lannel,” frontman Spaz corrected us. “It’s plaid.” Actually, it’s “a cotton-poly plaid blend,” according to key-board player Mongo. Either way, it com-plemented the Nerds’ duct-taped glasses nicely.

Lest you think these guys are just a bunch of goof balls, we should mention that they were really good and, also, that they’re serious musicians who’ve been playing for 27 years, “in the same clothes.” Music is

“the full-time job” for the Nerds, who will be playing at Westy’s Irish Pub in Wildwood on July 22 this summer, in case you missed them. “And probably at Convention Hall,” Spaz said, “although that hasn’t been offi-cially booked yet.” And whose fault is that? “I won’t name names,” said Spaz.

Then he told us about the guy he called on stage during the last set so that the band could spray-paint his head brown (“more Nestle-colored than Hershey’s-colored,” Spaz said) with some kind of “high-quality infomercial product.” This must have hap-

pened while we were busy talking with Chalfonte bartender Angela Monaghan in Carney’s Other Room (she recently trav-eled to Costa Rica, she told us, where she worked on an organic farm in the morning and surfed at Playa Hermosa in the after-noon), so we went back downstairs to see this spray-painted kid for ourselves.

Across the room, we spotted a set of painted-on sideburns on the head of Westside Market employee, Shaine Meier. We told him how cool we think it is that he stands up at council meetings (we’ve seen him there) to voice concerns about things like deteriorating seawalls; it’s not often you see young people at these things. “You know that phrase ‘It takes a village to raise a child?’” he asked. “I feel as though I was raised by the entire Cape May community. I love this town.”

In fact, it was mostly locals we ran into at this VIP night. Dancing in the front-row was Exit Zero shop manager Jeanine Recupero. We also spotted former Congress Hall employee Cori Harris, who recently moved to Philadelphia. (“I came back to do my taxes,” she told us, “and it’s just a nice bonus that VIP night is this week-

A COUPLE of weeks ago, I wrote about a shark that was killed in Jarvis Sound, between Cape May and Wildwood. This time, we’ll hear about one that was

caught by a fisherman, a holy man of all peo-ple, which is somewhat appropriate for the week following Easter.

The article is from an October 1920 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer and, unlike the story in the last article, this nearly 400-pound monster was pulled ashore, specifically on the Cape May beach next to Convention Hall

Reverend Dr. Paul Sturtevant Howe initially hooked the shark while fishing off the Convention Hall pier. The original Convention Hall was built in 1917 and in 1920, the same year the shark was caught, a 300-foot fishing pier was added. The pier was destroyed in the 1944 hurricane, along with the back end of the hall. While Convention Hall was quickly rebuilt by the city, the pier was not. It was replaced by a much shorter version that was lost in 1962, when Cape May’s last real Convention Hall was destroyed.

A Moment In HistoryHistorical Editor Ben Miller tells another shark tale

end, too.”) We ran into lifeguard/Ebbitt Room cook/future fireman Brandon Nash who is “excited” to get back on the beach. And we chatted with Deitz and Watson employee Doug Tracy who moved to Cape May after earning a degree from Ohio State University. (He could have made it to the Olympics for fencing, but he “didn’t care for” his college coach.) And we saw 22-year-old Sean Carney, who now runs the bar’s Stone Harbor location. “It’s hard for me to relax when I’m just here to have fun,” he said. “Like, if I see someone who needs a cocktail napkin, that’s a problem for me.”

Whatever your story, we were glad to see you out and about, Cape May. We think you’re all pretty VIP. (Except for you, the guy who kept fist-pumping into our personal space. You were annoying.)

Show Us The Money PAYING two dollars for f ive pennies seems, well, kind of fiscally irresponsible, doesn’t it? But not when they’re rare wheat pennies, like the ones we recently found at

Cape May Antique Center, located at the harbor, across from the Lobster House. We stopped by with money on our minds, and were gratified to see a display case full of shiny quarters, nickels, dimes, and half-dollars as soon as we walked in the door. Cape May Antique Center general manager Debbie Brown was on duty when we arrived, and was quite helpful. “I’ve learned a lot about coins since I’ve been working here,” she told us. “There are dif-ferent grades to coins – good, very good, and fine, and I also know that we have the best selection locally. Collectors come in with a list of what they’re looking for, and we let them know when we get it.”

Our eyes immediately went to the most expensive coin in the case (that seems to happen to us a lot when we shop), a Liberty Cap quarter from 1832, which is currently the highest-priced coin they have at $500. Vendor Linda Oates says their customers are knowledgeable and stay informed of f luctuations in the

market. “The other reason people come to us as opposed to buying on eBay or other internet vendors is because they are able to physically hold it in their hands. They are taking less of a chance on their invest-ment that way,” Linda says.

Something both women told us is that coin collecting is really making a come-back. “I think it’s the economy,” Linda said. “People want to invest in something that’s tangible, that holds its value like sil-ver and gold does.” (Probably doesn’t hurt that you can stash it under your bed, too.)

“The interesting thing to me about coin collecting is how many kids are into Debbie says. “They come in at six, eight, 10 years old with their dad, who’s a col-lector, and maybe his dad before him was a collector. It’s really nice to see the kids take an interest in something like this, especially considering all the technology they have access to today. It’s cool watch-ing a hobby being passed down through the generations that way.”

Talk Of The Town? From Page 18

PARTING SHOT Congratulations to Lightning Jack Lindeman (as the British press named him), a Cape May Beach Patrol veteran and a member of the Cambridge University team that beat bitter rival Oxford in the world’s oldest, most famous boat race, across the pond. Jack also happens to be the cover model on our first full-color issue of the year (out mid-May). Next stop, the Olympics?

IF YOU read this column last week, you know my thoughts on The Hunger Games. Let’s transition from that story about children killing each other for televised sport (I still say,

“Yikes!”) to Monsieur Lazhar, a Canadian film nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar this year. It tells a moving story that respects kids and beautifully showcases their talents. It arrives in theaters this month, but you may have to travel to see it!

An elementary school teacher dies tragically in a terrifying classroom scene. The school’s answer is to paint the room, call in a psychologist, and get students back to class. The only problem (well, one of several) is that no teacher wants the job. Seemingly out of nowhere comes Bachir Lazhar, played by Mohamed Fellag, a man who heard about the horror and wants to assume responsibility for the class. With no other takers, he is hired.

The story unfolds with grace and charm as students struggle to understand the tragedy. Lazhar soon learns that the classroom had its share of conf licts. The

drama is heavy, but the film’s mood is never down mainly because the acting, especially that of the children, is brilliant. The two lead child actors, Émilien Néron and Sophie Nélisse, are particularly note-worthy, endearing themselves to us from their first moments on screen.

With a subtle and dramatic script (written and directed by Philippe Falardeau), we’re carefully brought into the emotions you’d expect to find under these circumstances. Teachers will appre-ciate an accurate portrayal of today’s schools delivered without over-sentimen-tality.

The film didn’t win an Oscar, but it won big at the Genies (the Canadian Oscars). The Oscar went to A Separation, an Iranian film which was Oscar-worthy, although Monsieur Lazhar has more heart and is more finely crafted.

If you’ve seen The Hunger Games, you may be in need of an antidote, a superior film that honors children and respects their challenges without pander-ing to fears or preying on insecurities. For reviews of The Hunger Games and A Separation, visit www.capemayfilm.org, with more than 100 movie reviews by volunteers of the Cape May Film Society. If you’re a movie fan, we want to hear from you! Email [email protected] or call/text 609-326-FEST to learn more.

The Movie ColumnBy Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

Monsieur Lazhar, starring Sophie Nélisse, is the anti-Hunger Games, according to Tom Sims

A Philadelphia classic, right here at the shore.

What’s Your Story?Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here?

Who are you? My name is Pat Raspa. Where are you from? Technically, I’m

from across the street, where I work at Arti-sans Alcove.

And what were you doing when we interrupted you? I’m having a soup break here at the Depot Market, because it’s freez-ing at work and I need some soup to warm up. Today I’m trying the borscht.

It’s a little late in the day for lunch — it’s 3pm! (Reporter’s note: we were there for donut muffins.) I know — it’s more to warm up than being hungry. I don’t usually take a lunch.

The theme of this week’s issue is “money.” Do you have any thoughts on money that you’d like to share with us? Yes, I would. My thought is that I don’t have enough of it.

And if you did have lots of money, what would you spend it on? Oh, definitely jew-elry. And books. And then maybe shoes, as a distant third. Interview by Kate Chadwick

WHERE IS IT? La Mer Beachfront Inn is located at 1317 Beach Avenue, on the cor-ner of Beach and Pittsburgh, in the quieter east end of town.

WHAT IS IT? A multi-hued four-story beachfront hotel with a colorful façade, fabulous restaurant, and pool. Oh, and directly across the street from the beach.

WHO RUNS IT? La Mer is run by George Antoniades and his staff.

HOW MANY ROOMS? As of press time, there were 133, but by Memorial Day there will be an additional eight rooms, for a total of 141.

WHAT’S THE VIBE? Classy, yet col-orful and casual, relaxed and vibrant all at once. Cool ceramic tile in kitchen and bath areas provide relief for sun-scorched feet, and the Berber carpet and casual fur-niture are complemented by beach-scene artwork.

AMENITIES? We had a corner suite (room 438), so one of our favorite ameni-ties was not one but TWO balconies, one facing Beach, one over Pittsburgh, both with a great ocean view. Throw in a 40-inch

TV in the main room (with a smaller TV in the sitting area), granite counters in kitchenette and bathroom, coffee maker, microwave, and a full-size refrigerator, in-room internet access, and a safe in the large closet, and you’re talking luxury, minus the stuffiness factor. The pool will be open for business, weather permitting, by Memorial Day, complete with poolside food and beverage service. Or if you’re headed to the beach, they provide towels, chairs and umbrellas. There’s also a fitness room and a large conference/meeting space, both located on the third f loor.

WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? We had two double beds AND a pull-out couch — not too hard, not too soft, just right. (And the little kids with us even enjoyed some jump-ing on them prior to our cease-and-desist order, so apparently sturdy, too.) Extra pil-low and blankets in the closet, if you want to crack the sliding door to hear the ocean.

INSIDER TIP: Hotel guest or not, put the Pier House (already a hotspot for din-ners for the past few years) on your killer breakfasts list. Honorable mention goes to the outstanding Belgian waff le (pilfered from a table-mate’s plate, but now we know what we’re ordering next time). Waitress Amanda was friendly and efficient, and the cappuccino was excellent.

RANDOM FACT: La Mer offers a courtesy restroom with enclosed out-door shower for late check-out guests who wanted to squeeze in a little beach time prior to leaving town.

CONTACT INFO: Call 800-644-5004, for more information or to make a reserva-tion, , or visit capemaylamer.com.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush

«EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a

local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Judy Miller, who was ambushed on the Washington Street Mall.

Where are you from? I’m from Cape May and I still live here. Occupation: I’m retired. What were you doing when we interrupted? Just taking my

afternoon walk. When is the last time you got some flowers? I haven’t got-

ten flowers since January, which was was when my 18-year-old cat passed away.

The Cape May CrosswordNone of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Kate Chadwick

SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is Money. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us.

ACROSS1. The 1973 song “Money” is the only one from this British band’s album Dark Side Of The Moon to enter the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100. 3. As of May 2010, it costs approximately 1.6 cents to produce one of these. 7. An old American adage, advocating the exercise of caution in one’s dealings, advises against taking any of these. 9. The line “Greed is good” was uttered by the memorable Gordon Gekko in this 1987 film. 10. When the US first issued paper currency in 1861, each note was signed by hand by Treasury representatives. Hand-written signatures lasted only a year, after signers complained of this. 11. Probably as old as money itself is the creation of this, otherwise known as “funny money.” 15. The United States Bullion Depository, located in Kentucky, is more commonly known as this. 16. This Latin phrase, which appears on US coins, loosely translates as “one from many.” 18. The likeness of this woman, wife of a president, was the only female image to have ever appeared on a US currency note. 20. “Mo Money, Mo Problems” was the second posthumous number one song for this artist. 22. “If I Had A Million Dollars” is one of this Canadian band’s best-known songs and has

become a live show staple, despite never being released as a single and having no accompanying video. 23. The name of this financial services company has become synonymous with the backlash against Wall Street since the collapse of the mortgage insdustry. 24. “Show me the money” is an oft-quoted line from this 1996 hit film.

DOWN2 . This supermodel famously — or infamously — said, “I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.” 3. The recent long lines nationwide to purchase lottery tickets for this game are a strong example of hope springing eternal in a poor economy. 4. How many times does the term “The United States of America” appear on the $100 bill? 5. “The Money Song,” by this classic British comedy troupe, starts with the attention-getting lyric “I’ve got ninety-thousand pounds in my pyjamas.”

6. This American comedian, TV and film star said “Cocaine is God’s way of saying you’re making too much money.” 8. This historic Philadelphia landmark and tourist attraction is pictured on the back of the $100 bill. 12. This magazine makes us all jealous by publishing an annual list of the world’s richest people. 13. In general, living people don’t appear on US coins, but in 1926, this man became the first president pictured on a coin while still alive. 14 . “Money For Nothing,” featuring back-up vocals by Sting, was one of this band’s most successful singles. 17. An American computer magnate and philanthropist, he is second on Forbes’ list of richest people in the world for the third year in a row. 19. “Let me tell you how it will be; there’s one for you, nineteen for me” is the opening lyric to this Beatles song. 21. Earning a decent living is also known as “bringing home the.....”Tough to get in — or out — of. See 15 across.

The Answer LadyWise answers to perplexing questions

THE Answer Lady invites inqui-ries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quan-daries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a

query, write to [email protected] Answer LadyThe husband of my best childhood

friend called me last summer to say he was bringing her to Cape May for her birthday. We had lost touch over the years, and he sug-gested that I surprise her by meeting them for dinner and drinks at the Mug. It was nice to see her; we now catch up occasionally on Facebook, and will probably have lunch this summer. However, her husband keeps texting and emailing me. I’m starting to wonder if he’s hitting on me, but I’m not sure and don’t want to be paranoid by calling him on it (or reporting his behavior to his wife) if I’m wrong. What to do? - The Best Friend

Dear Best

This is difficult. There’s no rule that the Answer Lady is aware of preventing mar-ried people to have friends of the opposite sex. On the one hand, maybe he’s just be

a friendly fellow looking out for his wife’s best interests - perhaps she’s going through a rough time, unbeknownst to you, and he wants her friends close by for support. On the other hand, he just may be a big weasel who has ulterior motives involving you, him and a hot tub. Unless he is emailing and texting you for specific reasons, the Answer Lady thinks the latter may be the case. If he were just some random acquaintance, the Answer Lady might suggest you simply ask him what he’s up to, but since he is the hus-

band of a friend, you should probably tread more carefully. Unless he texts or emails something overtly over the line, it may be best to simply ignore his texts and emails, in the hopes they eventually stop. Or respond with a simple “I hope everything’s okay with you and Jane, Dick,” and see what his response is. Picking up the phone and alert-ing his wife to this is probably not your best course of action at this stage of the game, since you are not sure just what’s going on here. Besides, if he IS one of those men who hits on every woman he encounters until someone bites (one way or the other), you probably won’t be telling her anything she doesn’t already know.

Dear Answer Lady

I waitress in a local restaurant, and have a regular elderly gentleman customer who is always pinching my cheeks. He’s sweet, but I don’t like it. – Wendy Waitress

Dear Wendy

The Answer Lady presumes we are talk-ing about the cheeks on your face. If so, keep out of arm’s reach. If not, tell your boss.

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

duck: I was determined not to pollute those simple, kind folks with western notions of wealth, and I knew that if I handed over some $30,000, they would come to a sticky end.

And that is why today I am a man of inestimable wealth: I do not wish to appear vulgar by having a dollar value assigned to my holdings and possessions. And anyway, rich as I am, I am richer still in friends and love and in living in this stunning city.

Of course, I do allow myself some little

I AM NOT much for money, which I believe to be a terribly gauche notion, and much prefer to carry in my wallet enough raw gold to settle any matters of commerce (gold and a

stout set of brass knuckledusters: I have yet to encounter a scenario where the combina-tion will not win the day).

And I find those folks who are all about the pursuit of money to be rather poor com-pany, most often with utterly no sense of humor and possessed of darting eyes. Also, in my long and varied experiences, in times of unrest it does not take a genius to see that a self-declared financial elite who rub the noses of the common man in the dirt is not just encouraging the spirit of revolution, but inviting it in the mansion, handing it a bottle filled with gasoline and then stuff-ing a lit rag in the top and stepping back politely.

It is exactly that egalitarian spirit and the notion of a moneyless society that inspired me to purchase Cape May from the Indians back in the day for a handful of beads, a mirror and a squeaky rubber

indulgences, as befits an elder gentleman: my bed is made from solid gold, with dia-mond posts and sheets woven from the individual silk threads of 50,000 spiders (non-sticky: a previous order was misin-terpreted and while I had a perfect sleep, it took me a damnable week to escape the sheets in the morning). And my cellars are full of works of art collected from various parts of the world where I felt they were not safe from predation or damage: one day of course I will return my Faberge Eggs to Russia, the other two paintings in the Mona Lisa triptych to Paris, the Ark of the Covenant to Rome and so on, but for now, I see myself as a steward of the world’s treasures.

But, I do wish to enrich your wretched lives, and so I announce a contest to make ONE of you rich beyond your wildest dreams: send in a 50-word account of “what I would spend my millions on” to the Scotch scoundrel who edits this rag, and the author of the best answer will: (a) Receive $10m, and (b) Be dipped in molten gold.

No need to thank me!

Activity Of The WeekA weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: A spirited weekend in Cape May

CAPE May is a spirited town, so why not use Friday the 13th as an excuse to get to know the spirits a little better? Fear of Fri-day the 13th is a Victorian inven-

tion — the first documented reference to the ill-fated date is in 1869. And not every culture chooses Friday, or the 13th, as the unlucky day — Italians get nervous on Friday the 17th, and Spaniards worry on Tuesday the 13th. But this is America, where the 1980 movie, “Friday the 13th” spawned ten sequels, and it is 2012, a year with three of the scary dates, so what better time to go ghost hunting?

We usually associate ghosts with autumn, and Halloween, when the veil between this world and the next is said to be the thinnest. But, according to the website, Haunted America, Friday the Thirteenth is a great day to try to contact ghosts. And, believ-ers say, spirits are drawn year-round to Cape May’s quartz-filled beaches. Hit the beach on a predawn spring morning, when the fog softens the sound of the rolling waves, and the brightening sky reveals more shades of grey than can fit in your pencil box, and see if

you don’t agree. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts

(MAC) encourages you to get close to the spirits this weekend, with the help of the Ghost Writer, Craig McManus. McManus is a psychic medium who has studied paranor-mal activity in Cape May’s Victorian build-ings, and on Friday, April 13, he’ll join a few

guests for dinner. Tickets are $50, available from MAC, and the event will be held at the Inn of Cape May, whose charming parlor is the perfect setting for a Victorian ghost with a story to tell. Or, take “A Ride With the Ghost Writer,” and join McManus on a trolley as he tells tales of the spirits he has met. The tour begins and ends at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, and all seats are $25. You can also join McManus on Saturday, April 14 at 11pm for “Midnight at the Physick Estate,” where he will share his experiences. The tour is limited to 25 people, and tickets are $35. For more information, call 609-884-5404.

Maybe spirits are not your cup of tea. If you’d rather join the Temperance Debate, come to a Tea Luncheon at the Merion Inn on Thursday, April 26. Dr Physick will moderate a debate between saloonkeeper Patrick Col-lins and temperance advocate Jennie Wales. Admission is $25, and more information is available from MAC.

Make some spirited new friends this weekend!

He worked with editors and writers from CBS 3 and composed a 32-second recording at the end of the program, which ran on the air.

Outside school, Casella plays tournament street hockey, and brings his TV media passion into his personal life through photography and making skateboarding videos.

Casella will continue his filmmaking career at the Art Institute of Philadelphia this fall. He plans to major in digital filmmaking and video production. He especially enjoys filming documentaries.

“I’d like to film something like Frozen Planet, said Casella of his career goals.” Clearly, Casella is an inspiring young man who plans on sharing his dreams and talents with everyone.

«PETEY is a 1-year-old white pit bull with dark brindle markings. He came

to the shelter as a stray who may have been abandoned. Petey is very playful, and enjoys games, toys and chasing balls. He’s affec-tionate, mindful of his manners and knows some commands. Because of his size and strength, Petey is not recommended for a family with children under 6, and he does not like cats. The adoption fee is $95.

«CIROC is a medium-sized pit bull, approximately 18-months-old. She’s

extremely active but submissive, and needs a patient owner for consistent training, gen-tle discipline and daily exercise. You’ll get a loyal, obedient friend. Ciroc knows some commands, like sit, lay down, and speak. She is recommended for a single person or fam-ily with children over 10 years of age, and no other pets. The adoption fee is $95.

«ARISA was surrendered to our shel-ter when her owners had to move and

couldn’t take her with them. While she is a sweet, obedient girl who is very social, she is a little shy and skittish so she’ll need a quiet home, preferably without small or rowdy kids to make her anxious. Hopefully a kind per-son with time and patience will give her the chance to go to a forever home, and hopefully that someone is you. The adoption fee is $95.

CAPE May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse is one of the most beautiful build-ings in town, but, it’s far more than a gorgeous restoration

of an 1853 church. There is something for everyone in that building. In addition to the theatre company presenting world-class artists in critically acclaimed productions, it’s also used to touch the lives of children, seniors, and all members of the community.

Children will discover aspects of their personalities in a new Discovery Theatre Camp this summer, overseen by Artistic Director Roy Steinberg and led by master teacher Elizabeth Troxell, who has led the theatre department at the Milton Hershey School for 17 years. Using theatre games, improvisations, and excerpts from world dramatic literature, campers will explore pop culture and fairy tales, as well as the writings of famous playwrights like Moliere, Strindberg, and Shakespeare. The camp runs July 10 through 20, and campers can sign up for one week or two. There are sep-arate sessions for campers ages 9-12, and for campers ages 13-16. Register online today at capemaystage.org.

The Shore Grand Slam finale is April 22 at 6:30pm at the Playhouse. Each year, Cape May Stage joins with the Center for Community Arts to host the finale of Story Slams, that bring so many new members of the community into the lovely auditorium.

The birds migrating north in spring are mostly adults, and most know that Cape May lies on...the wrong side of the bay — good for us, bad for birds. In fall, birds concentrate here because they don’t want to cross the bay. All that changes in spring is the direction. Bay’s still there and in the same spot. Birds are still reluc-tant to cross. Many hawks (particularly

Bird DroppingsThe weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

Continued On Page 84 ?

IT’S one of the most oft-asked ques-tions of those unfamiliar with Cape May migration: “When do hawks come through in the spring?” And it leads to one of the most disappoint-

ing answers: “They don’t.”As answers go, this one isn’t, strictly

speaking, true — I’ll get to that. But it’s true enough and anyone coming to Cape May in spring hoping to see the same mas-sive movements of (gasp, sigh) raptors that characterize fall are setting them-selves up for a small, lean disappointment. The spring hawk migration in April and May is a pale shadow of what we get to enjoy in the fall. Why? First, most of the hawks that passed through Cape May from August into December last year are dead.

Dead? You heard me. Stiff. Because about 90% of the hawks that pass through Cape May then are first year birds (born that year - just kids) and about 90% of these will fail to reach adulthood. A bird’s first trip south constitutes the first major cut in any birds life, and the rigors of a bird’s first winter whittle down the rest.

larger soaring ones) elect to go up the Delaware side. And many even take a more inland route than this.

There are some species of hawks that do make light of a water crossing — among them Osprey, Northern Harrier, falcons and accipiters.

“That sounds like plenty of birds,” you’re thinking, and you’re right. Problem is, we lack a focus point. Birds jump-ing off Cape Henlopen can make landfall near Higbee Beach, Cape May Point, Cape May — some may decide that Town Bank or East Point Light is as good a place as any. skipping the southern points entirely. The birds aren’t concentrated when they make landfall. And then they leave. Fast.

You must understand, these are adult birds. Their hormones are raging, bio-logical time clocks ticking. They have one thing in mind: get where they want to be, find a partner, and mate, mate, mate. It’s like spring break of the avian variety. Perhaps you can relate.

In the fall, Cape May is packed with the raptor equivalent of recent college graduates with graduation money in their pockets and no particular interest in settling down, finding a job, or getting domestic. In Spring, Cape May is brushed by birds really anxious to be elsewhere.

This is not to say we never have hawks in spring in Cape May. We do. Not sur-prisingly, the condition that sets up a spring f light is not that much different than that which sets up f lights in the fall - good northwest winds. In spring (as in fall), northwest winds ferry birds east and south. They kind of wander down to Cape May Point, sauntering along like summer tourists on surreys. And guess what? The ones that wander down to the Point just to see the sights - they’re second year birds (sub-adults). For the most part, they’ve just got their learner’s permit and aren’t breeding now because many birds of prey don’t breed until they’re two years old. These second year birds migrate later than adults, so spring concentrations are usually later, like May and early June. They’re also less impressive than in the fall because the ranks of second year birds

have been severely thinned by attrition. So there you have it — the reason you

don’t want to go to Cape May to watch hawks in the spring. Unless…did I men-tion we get some really rare hawks in spring? Mississippi Kites and Swallow-tailed Kites. If you went on my Monday morning walk on March 26, you know what I’m talking about.

Head to the Cape May Bird Observatory - THE place for all your nature needs. You can pick up a free birding map, checklist and daily walk schedule, and talk to our

staff about field guides, walks, and any-thing else you might need - or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open DAILY from 9:30am-4:30pm. Our staff are always available to help with questions. While you’re here, scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at the Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the lake view from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. Sit out on our garden benches and enjoy birds at the feeders. You can visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away!

Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

The Dating Column Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

LEANDRA is one of those people who always — and I try not to say always, but in this case, it’s warranted — has some passion-ate affair going on.

Most recently, she told me yesterday, it was with Zeke, the architect from San Diego she loved only while he lived in California. By the time he moved to Colorado to be with her, she had moved on to Tony, the country boy who throws rocks at her window to serenade her with his guitar AND Sandy, the artist who “paints his feelings” about her on floor-to-ceiling canvases.

When Leandra breaks up, it’s just as passionate. A guy once dumped her so that he could move to Australia, and it took him until he was in the middle of the Outback before he called to say he’d made the big-gest mistake of his life. But it was too late, Leandra had already fallen for the Siberian sky diving instructor who professed his love to her while parachuting over the New Zealand Alps.

Leandra makes me feel badly about my own love life. My most passionate date con-

sists of watching movies on the couch with a bag of popcorn or, if we’re feeling really adventurous, s’mores.

The men I’ve gone out with have never chased after me in the middle of a rainstorm to declare their undying devotion, like it goes in the movies. They’ve never picked me up on their motorcycles and ridden me off into the sunset. They’ve never made love to me somewhere exotic, under a full moon. My last boyfriend had more passion for a meal

from HotDog Tommy’s than he did for our relationship.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had that weak-in-the-knees feeling for men before, and I think there’s been men who’ve felt it for me… it’s just never been mutual. And dam-mit, if I’m going to have one of these earth-shatteringly good romances, it’s going to have to be mutual.

Sometimes, I wonder if I’m being realis-tic. Perhaps we only feel entitled to passion because so many people exaggerate the pas-sion of their own love lives, and this make us feel as though it’s a common and attainable thing. Perhaps people like Leandra are freaks of nature. Perhaps lasting companionship is the best any of us can hope for without being greedy. Perhaps movies on the couch with that guy you’re fond of should be good enough.

But no one’s ever accused me of being realistic before. And, I figure, I’ve waited this long, I may as well hold out for the guy who’s going to rock my world. Passion, if it is real, seems like a thing worth waiting for. And besides, a girl can only eat so many s’mores.
