LOCATION DIRECTIONS GETTING IN

1061 Budapest, Vasvari Pal utca 6

There is at least one other street in Buda-pest named Vasvari Pal utca. When ask-ing for directions or telling a taxi service it is important that you specify that the ad-dress is in District VI (Terézváros, in Eng-lish; Theresa Town). This is communicated in the postal code number “1061” or by saying “District 6, Vasvari Pal utca 6”.

UPON ARRIVAL

Please call the Apartment Manager: Andy Croydon at +36 (70) 709 2868 so that he can have someone at the apartment to greet you when you arrive.

FROM THE AIRPORT

Pick up your luggage and follow the taxi pathway marked on the floor through the terminal exit doors to where you will see a Fotaxi kiosk on your left. Show the clerk in the kiosk the address and they will give you a receipt and a taxi number. Taxis are just a few feet away. Cost to the Apart-ment will be less than 8,000 HUF with tip.

FROM THE TRAIN STATION

Call CITY TAXI at +36 1 2 111 111. Tell the dispatcher that you need a taxi. Speci-fy Keleti Station or Nyugati Station. They will give you a car number and tell you where to meet the taxi.

PRIVATE TRANSFERS

Contact Laszlo Marcus with Silverwings Chauffeur Service at +36 209 346 346

GETTING INTO THE POND

The Pond lies behind the two windows to the right of the central entry door. To ac-cess is in the Building Courtyard enter 66(key symbol)7345 into the keypad at the right of the door. Leaving the building there is a button on the wall on the left that un-locks the door.

When locking or unlocking the apartment door be sure to first lift the handle fully up to set the bolt, then use the key. Do the same when unlocking.

GETTING INTO PATY’S PLACE

Paty’s Place lies behind the window and the door on the right side of the building.

There are an outer set of Wood Doors and an inner set of Glass Doors. Each has locks. The lock for the Outer Doors is lo-cated below the door handle. The Round Key accomplishes this. The Inner doors are unlocked with the Square Key.

During the day, locking the outer doors is sufficient. When away from the apartment overnight, please lock both the Outer and the Inner Doors.

RUBBISH BINS

Rubbish bins are located in the courtyard. See “Getting into the Pond” on the previous page to access the courtyard..

LAUNDRY

Options: 1) Use the combo Waster-Dryer in the apartment. It is a typical condensing dryer and as such is slow and takes small loads. 2) Use the wash and fold service in the building courtyard at Ó utca No. 24, or 3) Visit VAJNÓCZKI Laundry & Dry Clean-ing located at Szófia u. 8. (maps at section 3)

TELEPHONE SERVICE

AT&T and T-Mobile both offer International travel service so you can economically use your cell phone/data/text.

The number format in Hungary is 0036 70 7092868 or 36 70 7092868. From your US mobile phone you would dial +36 70 709 2868. The + comes up when you hold the 0 key down for a few seconds. Calling the U.S. from Europe you would dial +1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX

MONEY

The currency is the Hungarian Forint. You will see forints expressed as “HUF” or “Ft”.

Forints are best gotten from an ATM. Two that are close to the apartment are the OTM Bank at Kiraly utca 49 & the MKB Bank ATM at Andrassy ut 17. Avoid ATM’s that are not associated with a Bank.

Most places will take your credit card; but always ask to be certain. All credit card transactions occur at the table using porta-ble machines. NEVER is the card taken from your sight.

If you are asked if you would like the store’s bank to convert the funds or your bank to convert the funds ALWAYS say your bank to ensure you get good rates.

TIPPING

Tipping is limited to rounding up to the nearest 500 or 1000 forints. For a 3,750 ft bill you might say, charge 4,000 ft to my card please. When paying cash, state how much change you want to receive back.

Do not leave tips on the table.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Use individual TICKETS or purchase a TRAVELCARD. Tickets must be validated using the orange box on each Tram and at each Metro entrance. TRAVELCARDS need only be presented when requested. The “Budapest Card” is another option that pays for itself if you plan on visiting a lot of museums.

TICKETS: 350 ft each or 10 for 3,000 ft.

TRAVELCARDS 24 Hour 1,650 ft 72 Hour 4,150 ft 7 Day 4,950 ft

All can be purchased at Metro Stations and most tram stops. The vending machines have English instruction and are easy to understand and use. Largest bill they take is 10,000 forint

TAXI SERVICE

To return to the airport or the train station and any other trip within the city of Buda-pest call CITY TAXI: +36 - 1 -2-111-111. Ft, $, € & CC are accepted.

LINEN AND TOWELS

These are self service apartments. They are equipped with towels and linen, but there is no maid service so cleaning is up to you. See the previous section on Laun-dry. There will be a couple of rolls of toilet paper to get you started.

KITCHEN

The kitchen is fully equipped for light cook-ing. You will find pots & pans, plates, glasses, silverware, etc. Each apartment has a two burner cooktop and a combina-tion microwave/conventional oven. The cooktop is an Induction cooktop and will only work with the pots provided. Also pro-vided is a device for making hot water for Tea or Instant Coffee.

WATER

Yes, you can drink the water, but the water in Budapest isn't the best tasting in the world. You might want to purchase bottled water. Bottles with pink tops are generally “still” water while those with blue tops are generally “with gas”.

AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING

The apartments are equipped with heat and air conditioning. You may adjust as suits your comfort zone; but please turn it off while you are out of the apartment.

GROCERIES

The market across Kiraly utca at the end of Vasvari Pal utca has the essentials and a bakery where you can purchase breads, croissants, etc. for breakfast.

Note that Hungarian grocery stores sell very little other than food stuffs. No batter-ies, no shampoo, no razors, etc.

PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS

These are purchased at stores that special-ize in such things and not at grocery mar-kets or pharmacies. The nearest is a store called DM on Kiraly utca less than a 5 mi-nute walk from the apartment.

PHARMACY

Be it prescription drugs or Tylenol, you have to purchase it at a Pharmacy; and it must be dispensed by the pharmacist. The pharmacy on Kiraly utca is about a 3 mi-nute walk from the apartment.

See Page 10 for ATM, Pharmacy, Grocery Stores

A PLUG FOR OUR FRIENDS "Kadarka" is a type of grape they make wine from in Hungary and an excellent wine bar with outstanding food; located 150 feet from the apartment. There you will find our friends:

http://kadarkawinebar.com/ From left to right: Arpie (short for Arpad), he owns the place; Julie the bartender and Mr. Z (I think his real name is Zoltan, but we started calling him Mr. Z and he will re-spond to it and know who your friends are)

FAMOUS RUIN PUBS OF BUDAPEST

Budapest’s seventh district, once home to a flourishing Jewish community before World War

II, has emerged as the home of the famous "ruin pubs" (romkocsma in Hungarian).

The main ingredients of a Ruin Pub are usually an abandoned building and a few beer taps. Add to that a bit of thrift-shop de-cor and a healthy dose of hipster vibe, and the result is what you might get if you crossed a chill Berlin squat with a smallish Munich beer hall.

The Millennium Metro Line (M1)

5

With the Opera Stop just a 3 minute walk from the Apartments, the M1 connects the Apartments with the best of Budapest.

M1, the oldest electric underground metro on the mainland of Europe; has been in constant operation since 1896.

The original purpose of the first metro line was to facilitate transport to the Budapest City Park along the elegant Andrássy Ave-nue without building surface transport af-fecting the streetscape. The National As-sembly accepted the metro plan in 1870 and German firm Siemens & Halske AG was commissioned for the construction, starting in 1894. It took 2,000 workers us-ing up-to-date machinery less than two years to complete. This section was built entirely from the surface (with the cut-and-cover method). Completed by the deadline, it was inaugurated on May 2, 1896, the year of the millennium (the thousandth an-niversary of the arrival of the Magyars), by emperor Franz Joseph. One original car is preserved at the Seashore Trolley Muse-um in Kennebunkport, Maine, United States.

Stolpersteins

A stolperstein, literally "stumbling stone" is a cobblestone-size concrete cube bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of individual victims of German Nazism. The project was initiated by the German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992, and is still ongoing. It commemorates individual persons at exactly the last place of resi-dency – or, sometimes, work – which was freely chosen by the person before he or she fell victim to Nazi terror, was deported to a concentration or extermination camp, or escaped persecution by emigration or suicide. As of 11 January 2015, over 50,000 stolpersteins have been laid in 18 European countries, making the stolperstein project the world's largest de-centralized memorial.

The majority of stolpersteins commemo-rate Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Oth-ers have been placed for Sinti and Romani people, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witness-es, black people, members of the Chris-tians opposition (both Protestants and Catholics), the Communist Party and the European anti-Nazi Resistance, military deserters, and the physically or mentally disabled.

Klauzál tér Market Hall The Klauzál tér (or Klauzal Square) is the largest square in the Jewish quarter of the city. The original name of this square was Stephans Platz. In 1907, the square was named after Gábor Klauzál a Hungarian politician, who served as Minister of Agri-culture, Industry and Trade during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The mar-ket opened in 1897 as the third Market Hall in Budapest.

Hunyadi téri Market You cannot go wrong with the market in Hunyadi tér. This is one of the smallest market halls of Budapest and it's listed as a national treasure. Be sure to taste and/or take home some of the different types of honey, bacon and sausages sold by farm-ers, and do not miss out the fresh vegeta-bles or the liver paté. The peak time of the market is in the mornings of Fridays and Saturdays.

Hungarian Beef Goulash (for 4 people)

For the beef goulash: 1500 grams of beef shank (53 ounces) – cut into 1-inch cubes 750 grams of onions (26,5 ounces) – diced 2 tablespoons lard or 6 tablespoons of vegetable oil (sunflower) 2 tablespoons of sweet Hungarian paprika powder 2 bay leaves 1 medium fresh tomato – chopped 1 sweet yellow pepper (or bell pepper, wax or banana pepper) – cut into small pieces 1 clove of garlic – minced 1 teaspoon of ground caraway seeds 10 black peppercorns Salt to taste

For the nokedli noodles (spaetzle): 1 egg Pinch of salt 150 ml (0.6 cup) of water 200 grams (7 ounces) of plain flour

Directions: In a large soup pot, sauté the onions in vegetable oil or pork lard over low heat, stirring frequently, until translucent. Do not let them burn. Salt lightly to help tenderize them. The onions should be cut into very, very small pieces. This is essential in order to achieve the “stew consistency”. Add a small amount of water, if necessary, to keep them from sticking to the pan. Remove the pot from the heat, add the sweet Hun-garian paprika, stir. Add the tomatoes, the sweet yel-low pepper and the meat, and stir again. Do not burn the paprika, or it will become bitter. Add the bay leaves, the peppercorns, the minced garlic, salt to taste and pour over water to cover by an inch and bring it to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until meat is tender, adding water as neces-sary to avoid burning but to keep the thick stew con-sistency. It takes around 2-3 hours. Meanwhile, you have time to make the nokedli noo-dles. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Beat the eggs and 150 ml of water together with the

salt. Slowly mix in the flour to make a soft, sticky dough. You may not need all the flour, or you may need more. Stop adding flour when you get an elastic moist dough. Place a nokedli grater (spaetzle maker) over the pot of boiling water. (You can also use a simple cheese grater or large hole pasta strainer). Lay a portion of the dough on the grater and move it back and forth over the grater using a spatula or wooden spoon to push through small egg noodle bits that drop into the boiling water. When the noodles float to the top, wait about 30 seconds and drain them. Serve your beef goulash with nokedli noodles and pickles.

BUDAPEST

In Hungary people don't clink beer glasses.

Legend has it, that when Hunga-ry's 1848 revolution against the Habs-burgs was defeated, the Austrians cel-

ebrated in Vienna by toasting and clinking their beer glasses. Hungari-

ans vowed not to cheers with beer for 150 years.

While that time frame is over - Hun-garians still don't "cheers" with beer.

Nevertheless with any other alcoholic beverage like wine or pálinka it's con-sidered rude not to look the other per-

son in the eye when saying cheers ("egészségedre").

People will literally have their eyes wide open and protruding as they clink

glasses to make sure you know that they're looking at you, and that they

know that you're looking at them.
